Antisocial personality disorder is defined as "a pervasive pattern of disregard for, and violation of, the rights of others that begins in childhood or early adolescence and continues into adulthood."

Symptoms of ASPD include:

1) Callous unconcern for the feelings of others;

2) Gross and persistent attitude of irresponsibility and disregard for social norms, rules, and obligations;

3) Incapacity to maintain enduring relationships, though having no difficulty in establishing them;

4) Very low tolerance to frustration and a low threshold for discharge of aggression, including violence;

5) Incapacity to experience guilt or to profit from experience, particularly punishment;

6) Markedly prone to blame others or to offer plausible rationalizations for the behavior that has brought the person into conflict with society.

Millon differentiates several subtypes - covetous, risk-taking, malevolent, tyrannical, nomadic, malignant, unprincipled, disingenuous, spineless, explosive, and abrasive. Persistent irritability can be an associated feature.

Diagnostic features:

1) failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest;

2) deception, as indicated by repeatedly lying, use of aliases, or conning others for personal profit or pleasure;

3) impulsiveness or failure to plan ahead;

4) irritability and aggressiveness, as indicated by repeated physical fights or assaults;

5) reckless disregard for safety of self or others;

6) consistent irresponsibility, as indicated by repeated failure to sustain consistent work behavior or honor financial obligations;

7) lack of remorse, as indicated by being indifferent to or rationalizing having hurt, mistreated, or stolen from another;

B) The individual is at least age 18 years.
C) There is evidence of conduct disorder with onset before age 15 years.
D) The occurrence of antisocial behavior is not exclusively during the course of schizophrenia or a manic episode.

Hello,

Would you murder Riona if it benefitted you in some material way, and there was no chance of being caught or punished for it?

...That's chaotic stupid, not chaotic evil.

You guys have a phenomenally underdeveloped idea of sociopathy. I mean, damn, that's almost offensively stereotypical. Hey, I'm a sociopath so I'll just randomly murder people I know for fun and profit. Really? Come on.

Anyway, I'm going to move this over to your thread because it serves my purposes better.

(Not a shot at you, Byte - but at conventional psych, this)

You know, I have always taken MASSIVE "issue" with this and other diagnostic criteria from the DSM since much of it seems more bent towards ensuring what I consider a disastrous status quo than solving peoples problems...

>> 1) failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest....

Fuck social norms, and lawful behaviors for that matter - seriously, you're talkin to a guy who had to dodge Truant officers to get to their day job, and Curfew cops to get to their night shift, just to make a freakin living, and who's initial forays into helping others started with outright unlawful conduct because there WAS no method within the law of addressing the matter at the time.

And don't even get me STARTED on the whole how-dare-you-defend-yourself concept as expressed in law, just don't - not only am I all too well aware just how that bent my personality into misanthropy to begin with, the bite of the psychological damage you cause a kid when you punish them for not bowing down NEVER GOES AWAY, ever.
It's one of the PRIMARY factors behind C-PTSD, the inability to fight back or escape.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Complex_post-traumatic_stress_disorder
Past a certain point that crap winds up PHYSICALLY rewiring a persons neurochemistry and thought processes, they will *NEVER* be "normal", they will *NEVER* respect "The Law" - they are fundamentally incapable of doing so.

>> 2) deception, as indicated by repeatedly lying, use of aliases, or conning others for personal profit or pleasure

The first a child learns to lie is to avoid punishment, following the "example" taught to them by adults, and if said punishments are in fact or perceived to be unfair, this removes any feeling of guilt as a mitigating factor.
Specific to that is collective punishment (always a tyrannical act) and punishment by assumption.
That whole all teens are manipulative liars/sex crazed/on drugs load of bolus is IMMENSELY damaging and eventually results in them not having ANY INCENTIVE WHATEVER to tell the truth to "The Enemy", that being adults and their society, often in large part due to black pedagogy/adverse parenting.
Treat them as victim or enemy, and it becomes self-fulfilling prophecy, invade their privacy, they learn to lie, treat them unfairly, they learn to scam you right back.
THEY LEARN THIS FROM US.

>> 3) impulsiveness or failure to plan ahead

When one has no power to make their plans STICK, when every plan or deal can be thrown to the winds by the arbitrary whim of an adult, often without so much as an explaination much less an apology, it doesn't lend to long-term planning whatever - while discussing the series Jericho I pointed out how the "adults" coming in an nullifying all of the deals that Dale made not only make all his hard work pointless, effectively wrecked their economy and started a war... but also pushed Dale Turner into becoming something like Jonah Prowse, because the only lesson he COULD take from all that is Might makes Right.

>> 4) irritability and aggressiveness, as indicated by repeated physical fights or assaults

Yes cause heaven forfend a child has a sense of SELF, of PERSONHOOD, of the notion they might have RIGHTS, and gets pissy when those rights are stomped all over, often under flimsy excuses.

>> 5) reckless disregard for safety of self or others

What worth is there in preserving a life so miserable, then - and why CARE what happens to others when it's made abundantly clear to them on a daily basis that this is not, and (in their perspective) probably never will be reciprocated if they do ?
THEY LEARN THIS FROM US.

>> 6) consistent irresponsibility, as indicated by repeated failure to sustain consistent work behavior or honor financial obligations

Lemme ask you why would they ?
Adults as a rule are TERRIBLE at keeping their promises/obligations to their kids, and consider that a young teens first work experience is likely to be with an exploitive employer who will mistreat them cause they're so replaceable, eventually firing them under a contrived excuse cause it's cheaper to hire another one than give them a raise therefore good performance becomes a detriment.
If nobody keeps their promises to YOU, then what's a promise worth ?

>> 7) lack of remorse, as indicated by being indifferent to or rationalizing having hurt, mistreated, or stolen from another

In order to learn empathy, children have to EXPERIENCE it - if nobody gives a shit about THEM being hurt, mistreated or stolen from, where on earth are they going to learn the concept about caring if it happens to someone else, even at their own hands ?
Okay yes, SOME of that is genetically hard-wired, but we're talking about a society in which childraising and education elements seem hell bent on subverting that, and the lessons they take from all of that society every moment, the key-to-success in that society being obvious...
They *will* adapt and emulate the behavior they see, especially of those lauded and held up as examples, intentionally or not, and those "successful" in that society.
THEY LEARN THIS FROM US.

So in short, this is dropping a brick on purpose, and then acting surprised when it lands on your foot - there's really, really, really OBVIOUS cause-and-effect here, and yet the DSM looks anywhere and everywhere ELSE for blame.
Victim blaming at its ultimate worst, supported by society and the state.

Well, but the lack of emotional connection thing is pretty major, and the negative blunted affect. I think it's still something different than what you're talking about Frem. Though as always you really get what it's like.

Sure some of these fit you, but I'd say not enough of them to make a real diagnosis, a lot of these don't seem to fit, I'd suggest looking elsewhere for answers, ASPD doesn't seem like the right fit for your situation.
But I've said that already many times, and I'll continue doing so I reckon.
