I still hope you will address whether absolute monarchy would fit within your definition of big government and whether in that case you would still characterize it as a left-wing concept.

Thanks!

It certainly seems it'd be oppressive, and counter to the rights of the individual. Right or Left would be a moot point. Why do you ask ?

I ask because you explicitly said that all big-government concepts are left-wing.

To counter that, I presented this example, which I additionally consider to be very much NOT left-wing. In fact, it might be the original right-wing, going by the origins of the terms.

Would you thus concede that big government and authoritarian oppression can be found both in right and left wing extremes? Or at the very least not originate exclusively from left-wing thought?

The political game of - vote for me, and I'll give you( or your union, your state, home town, district, racial group, etc.. ) benefits and 'RIGHTS'- is a racket played by almost anyone, Left or Right. So yes, we can agree on that point.

But the larger issue, of what the State can and should do, for the good of the people, is what I'm talking about.

Our Constitution speaks of freedoms we have, FROM govt. Because, at the time, our founders were trying to escape the tyranny of an oppressive ,over bearing system. In contrast, our President speaks of things our govt MUST do for people, which is a complete 180 on the very ideals for which this country was founded.

But, the Supreme Court never ventured into the issues of redistribution of wealth, and of more basic issues such as political and economic justice in society. To that extent, as radical as I think people try to characterize the Warren Court, it wasn't that radical. It didn't break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the Founding Fathers in the Constitution, at least as it's been interpreted, and the Warren Court interpreted in the same way, that generally the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties. Says what the states can't do to you. Says what the federal government can't do to you, but doesn't say what the federal government or state government must do on your behalf. - Barack Obama.

I'm sorry Barry, but there's a REASON for that, and it's bizarre that a Constitutional 'lecturer ' like yourself doesn't get it.

Quote:

No, they weren't. That's the great misconception that is pushed by , gee, I wonder who? But it's completely false.

The simplest explanation is: Nazis were both extreme left-wing and extreme right-wing, in a compartmentalized way.

On the extreme left-wing side, the reason why they identified themselves as socialist, they had social programs for members of the elite Nazi party run by an authoritarian government. They had health care, built roads, regulated businesses for the state, and there were various benefits for being a loyal Nazi.

All it took was riding on the back of declaring some people subhumans and forcing them into labour camps for fun and profit and a little murder. In return Germans pledged themselves for the greater improvement of the state - Collectivism above individuals, in other words.

But on the right-wing side, within the Nazi party was a form of social darwinism (the master race) and meritocracy, just short of condoning klingon promotion schemes (kill your boss and take his place). The Nazi system was all very individualistic and self-serving (apart from the government granted benefits), and Hitler's best buddies were corporate executives who got exclusive Nazi Germany contracts for building up Germany's war machine. He outlawed workers strikes because it hurt manufacturing. He believed in private enterprise and gave many public services over to private businesses, consolidating power into monopolies, all right-wing ideas, and balanced that by increasing state control, a left-wing idea.

He was militaristic, and thought the inability of the poor and the non-white Aryan types to succeed was a fault of some inherent problem, and thought the German people were divinely chosen to be the next Holy Roman Empire (The Indiana Jones movies had Hitler hunting down Christian artifacts because Hitler believed that would give his soldiers an edge in combat - that actually wasn't made up).

Hitler made a big deal about how his ideology spanned the bridge between fascism and socialism. But he tended to dislike any socialists who weren't also fascists like him.

So like I said - Nazis were both. That was basically the whole point for them, they thought they'd get a new system of government that worked better than anything else in the past. And it utterly failed in part because many of the ideas are really incompatible - an unholy matrimony of the worst of both worlds wrapped up in an abusive authoritarian wrapper.

No, not really. That accurately describes the conclusion of Reagan's view, to topple the Soviet Govt, and revive the US economy. Which both were accomplished.
