Seems like. I must have missed PN's post about this.

Johnny Depp Left France To Avoid The Tax Man

American citizenship came in handy for Johnny Depp after all.

France’s new socialist president Francois Hollande promised, if elected, to increase the tax rate on rich people (those earning the equivalent of over $1.28 million USD) to 75 percent, but Johnny Depp didn’t stay around for the laws to be changed.

The A-List actor, who in the past has been highly critical of American culture and has described the US as “dumb” while heaping praise on his adopted home of France, moved back here anyway well before the election.

US citizen, big time movie celeb, goes to France, because he claims he's not happy with US culture. But when taxes are raised in France, gee... that culture doesn't seem to be that much an issue any more. And while Nashville ain't exactly Tupelo, Mississippi, it's also not Vegas, or Los Angeles.

Unless he specifically praised tax schemes as the one afoot in France, it's not really hypocrisy. He might still approve of all those cultural differences but simply disapprove of the new French tax law enough to evade it.

Where is the hypocrisy?

Who said anything about hypocrisy ?

I didn't.

The thing which recently has changed, which appears to be driving many top earners from inside the borders of France, just happens to coincide w/ Depp's change of heart.

Make of it what you will.

It just seemed like you were aiming for some kind of contradiction by emphasizing how he had approved of French culture before. Although there is no inherent contradiction.

As a general thread about the French tax law change it makes more sense, though.

I'm curious how this is going to pan out. I haven't paid a lot of attention to it, high-publicity celebrity exits aside, but this couldn't have been an unexpected development. I wonder what Hollande's long-term expectations are.

Just a sober look at the real world consequences of socialistic views, and how the " rich " won't sit idly by and just allow their $ to be taken by the state. Be it in France, or here , in the US.

And yes, Depp's appreciation for the French way of life is fine and dandy, up until they start taking more of his $. Then it becomes 'real', and we see how his priorities change.

When did Depp move to France?

When did he praise the culture?

When did the tax law change?

If the first two happened before the third, then he's not a hypocrite. He DID like the country and its culture, and then there were changes made which he didn't agree with.

Some critics have accused Depp of being a wanna-be European. I guess much in the same way folks noticed Madonna's on again, off again British accent. So, in some respects, that's the 'unreal' part.

I never insinuated hypocrisy in the first place, so how can I be doing it again? That was you who used that word, not I.

You keep insinuating that there is a contradictory relation between his approving of French culture and disapproving of this tax law. Why else would you repeatedly emphasize that he approved of French culture as if to somehow contrast this with his choice to avoid these taxes by relocating away? Or do you have another, less apparent reason to do so?

Depp spoke disparagingly of the US, and moves to where? France.

Quote:

Well, he DID move there, right ? And I didn't emphasize anything. I just said France appealed to him. So much so , that he moved there.

It's really not all that complicated. Depp left the US in the early 2000's, claiming he didn't want to raise his kids here. So he went to France. But the cost of adhering to his ideals was too much for even him to bear, so he left France. Where'd he end up ? Back in the USA, where he said he didn't want to raise his kids.

But he didn't move back to CA. He moved to where ? TN, which has no state income taxes.

Again, make of it what you will.

( But please, don't ascribe motives to me which aren't mine, or claim I said something I never did. I NEVER said thing about FRENCH culture. All my comments pertaining to that were in regards to Depp not caring for US culture. I never said 1 thing about French culture. )

So your point is... Depp disapproved of American culture a lot. But he values paying little taxes enough to return to that country, specifically to a place with minimal taxes.

So whether or not he approves of American culture is really irrelevant, right? I mean, he's a US citizen, it's a lot less complicated for him to relocate there than to another place, and if he's doing it for tax reasons, he's going to do it thoroughly.

So basically, you meant to say that you approve of his choice? Disapprove? Do you think his case is an example of wider implications about the French tax law?

I understand that you might dislike me ascribing motives to you, but you also haven't really given a solid opinion on this subject, in a thread you yourself posted, leaving a lot of room for assumptions. What about this made you think it makes an interesting post? And I'm not saying it isn't, I just want to know what you actually think of it.

What motives have I been ascribing to others?

I never accused Depp of being a hypocrite, yet was asked why I did.

I never brought up the French culture, yet it was claimed I had.

If folks would merely address what I SAID, or take time to ASK me what I meant, instead of knee jerk reactions to things I never did say, there'd be a whole lot less confusion.

But my guess is that some here WANT confusion, they want confrontation, where there need not be any.

Why is that ?

But you of course feel free to ascribe motives to Johnny Depp. The fact that his children are not little anymore (13 and 10), that he broke up with longtime-partner French actress Vanessa Paradis in July 2012, that he had already re-established US residency in 2011 - I'm sure that had nothing to do with your argument or your claims about his motivations.

What part of ' make of it what you will ' is hard for you to understand ?

But since you asked, I find it interesting for meany reasons. For one, Depp isn't the only notable high income individual to leave France in response to the high taxes which were put in by a newly elected socialist President.

I can't help but take note of the unintended consequences going on here. California raises taxes on the rich, and folks relocate. Same goes for NYC. And now France. It's a common theme, yet incredibly, the politicians keep making the same dumb ass mistakes. They think that the super rich will be content with staying put, no matter how much $ the govt takes.

"Make of it what you will" regards my own opinion, which is why I asked yours. The two obviously don't have to match, but there's nothing wrong with wanting to know yours, why is that something you regard as a problem?

I wish you would just come out with saying "I think this shows the downside of this sort of tax policy" instead of going the "Isn't it interesting?"-route of just implying your opinion. You all but did, eventually, but why didn't you do it outright? It's not like it's an invalid opinion. Instead of starting an interesting discussion about the subject and your opinion on it, you left people guessing as to what you meant to express with your thread, and unsurprisingly we didn't necessarily guess right.

As it happens I agree, this tax policy has utterly led to rich people fleeing France, many opting for Belgium and other countries. I don't expect it to last forever and find it to be a pretty silly political gimmick.

Do you really think stating you own opinion would have stopped people here from forming and arguing their own?

You started the thread, so you must have wanted to discuss the subject, but you didn't do much to get the ball rolling. One person very early even asked what the point of it was. Stating your own opinion would have kept things on focus, instead you were pretty vague and heavy with implications, so really it's no accident this thread was easily derailed.

I'm not saying there is no generally hostile atmosphere on this board, which also contributed, but you certainly didn't do much to prevent obfuscation.

I didn't want to 'get the ball rolling' any more than posting the story. I do find it curious that you read ' pretty vague and heavy with implications' into anything I said.

If I had no point, no stated agenda, then how can you say that this thread was 'derailed' ? I placed no 'rails', nothing constricting the topic, from the start. It was left to grow , or not, greatly on its own accord.

At 6 different times (that I bothered to quote) little rappy states his opinion - Depp left France due to proposed high taxes. The only thing he left out to widdle his personal scent on his opinion was to post IN MY OPINION. His opinion is clear. The fact that's it's wrong - Depp reestablished US residency in 2011 - has gone by him - as factual things which can be verified with a LEETLE bit of effort always do. That he repeatedly ascribed motivations to Depp, while bitterly complaining that others did that to him, just makes it more deliciously stupid.

"American citizenship came in handy for Johnny Depp after all.
France’s new socialist president Francois Hollande promised, if elected, to increase the tax rate on rich people (those earning the equivalent of over $1.28 million USD) to 75 percent, but Johnny Depp didn’t stay around for the laws to be changed."

"US citizen, big time movie celeb, goes to France, because he claims he's not happy with US culture. But when taxes are raised in France, gee... that culture doesn't seem to be that much an issue any more."

"The thing which recently has changed, which appears to be driving many top earners from inside the borders of France, just happens to coincide w/ Depp's change of heart."

"Just a sober look at the real world consequences of socialistic views, and how the " rich " won't sit idly by and just allow their $ to be taken by the state. Be it in France, or here , in the US.
And yes, Depp's appreciation for the French way of life is fine and dandy, up until they start taking more of his $. Then it becomes 'real', and we see how his priorities change."

"Depp left the US in the early 2000's, claiming he didn't want to raise his kids here. So he went to France. But the cost of adhering to his ideals was too much for even him to bear, so he left France. Where'd he end up ? Back in the USA, where he said he didn't want to raise his kids.
But he didn't move back to CA. He moved to where ? TN, which has no state income taxes."

"For one, Depp isn't the only notable high income individual to leave France in response to the high taxes which were put in by a newly elected socialist President."

No, I didn't. I stated facts. ( And then, when asked, my opinion ) Taxes go up, many wealthy in France leave, Depp being one of them. He didn't leave France in 2011, did he ?

Missing citations,as I originally had them, but it's clear that this was written PRIOR to the election. Depp, as well as many others, were aware of what was coming. Not MY words, genius.

True statement. Coincidence that the taxes go up AND he decides to leave ? Could be.

Or not.

Again, not opinion. Fact.

Yeah, my opinion. As I was ASKED specifically by Rouka what I thought.

How many times are you going to harp on this same point ? He didn't come back to the US in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010... did he ?

Again, more facts. Not opinion.

Was it in response ? Maybe. Might not be though.

It's funny. I get mocked for NOT having an opinion, as well as having one.

5 of the quotes are mine. Not 6. I guess counting is too much effort for you, huh?

Odd question to ask, on your part.

Do you honestly not remember asking if I had Depp's phone number?

Why do you imagine you deserve more privacy or benefit of the doubt than he does?

Also, is it possible that a person can claim residency in one place while actually spending most of their time somewhere else? Seems to me not one Republican ever had a problem with it when Mitt Romney was doing exactly that.

Perhaps Depp lists Tennessee as his primary residence, but doesn't really spend all that much time there, like Romney did with his Utah home.

Actually, it shows the inanity of you, since no matter what you say, it's bound to be ridiculous and deserving of mockery.

Poor little rappy. You have yet to explain why Depp re-established his US residency in 2011 well BEFORE the newly proposed French taxes.

This is from September 2012. It lays out the proposed new tax changes in France, which were to be implemented in 2013 if passed.

http://www.kpmg.com/global/en/issuesandinsights/articlespublications/t
axnewsflash/pages/france-proposed-corporate-individual-tax-changes-for-2013.aspx

Quote:

September 28: The French government today unveiled proposed corporate and individual tax measures that are to be included in the Draft Finance Law for 2013
(Loi de Finances 2013).

...

Summary of individual tax proposals

New income tax rate of 45%: A new individual income tax rate of 45% would be imposed on income exceeding €150,000 per “household coefficient” share.

“Exceptional” tax rate of 75%: A new income tax rate would apply in 2013 (i.e., with respect to 2012 income) and in 2014 (for 2013 income) on income exceeding €1 million per person, when generated by certain activities—e.g., from employment, pension, “non-commercial” activities, business activities, excluding capital income.

Somehow, Depp has managed to procure a time machine with money he should have used to pay taxes! He went back a year before these rates were proposed and established residency in Tennessee!

That dastard. That rapscallion. How dare he travel back in time to shirk his responsibilities!

Yeah, well... its been said before.

Didn't Depp move to France because he's partner was French. And yeah, French culture, particularly if you've got money, is very pleasant indeed.

Lots of people move somewhere, and then move back home again. I did, I lived outside of Australia for 6 years. Loved lots about the UK, but eventually did miss a lot of the lifestyle here.

Seems to me that Rappy might think that moving outside of the US is downright unpatriotic. I wonder why people can't choose to live where they want, and then change their mind.

Only, it seems what you think doesn't sync up with the point I'm making.

Lots of 'wealthy' have left France, are leaving, or are considering it. And it's for one reason, more than any other. Doesn't matter if they're American or French or what ever. Has nothing to do with patriotism, for the US, or any other country.

It was her lack of facts, actually. She said she had 6 quotes from me that were all my OPINION. Read the post. She was wrong. One of the quotes she pulled wasn't even MINE! Talk about a swing and a miss ! She's grasping at straws, simply to have an excuse to argue in here, and it seems you are as well.

So what's new ?

But, but rappy said it was FACT - so it must be, right? He, like, promised he wasn't making up motivations for a person he didn't know - and so thus, he MUST have time traveled.

There's no other explaination.

(Well, except that he's a tool who got out-thought in one of his own threads, yet again).

1) Define "lots". I've heard of TWO. Is two "lots" in your universe?

2) How do you know what "reason" they left for? Have they said? Or is that just more of your OPINION that you're trying to pass off as "fact"?
