Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Quote:

“David, we should not be…our actions should not be dictated by whether Bashar al-Assad used these chemical weapons or not, first of all. Sooner or later he mostly likely would, in order to maintain his hold on power but what has happened here is the President drew a red line about chemical weapons, thereby giving a green light to Bashar al-Assad to do anything short of that…”

Of course, no beating of the war drums could be complete without a little fearmongering and McCain delivered: “As you know, a flood of weapons is coming in from Russia and Iran. Iranians are on the ground in Syria.”

Just in case that wasn’t enough, McCain made sure to throw in the J-word: “…there is every risk of a stalemate that could go on for months and months, while the jihadists flood in…”

David Gregory tried to bring the Senator back down to earth but suggesting that, perhaps, we might want to be a little bit more certain about the use of chemical weapons before we declare war on Syria. McCain’s reply to that: “Well, one of the lessons, obviously, and we hear this a lot from the administration, is that we had false information about weapons of mass destruction with Iraq…”

“Hear a lot from this administration…” I hope he means the BUSH administration because they’re the ones that stated unequivocally that we knew that Iraqi WMDs existed and where they were. They’re also the ones that said, “Oops, we were wrong.” Ten years later and John McCain, still eager to whitewash the disaster of the Iraq War, will not admit that it was all based on a lie.

Hey, hey, hey, time for another war!!

A " lie " which both Bill and Hillary promoted as well, during and after Bill's 2 terms in the White House.

Funny, no one ever remembers that Bill lied too. And even got charged for it, but let's not bother w/ such trivial matters, huh?

The media keeps emphasizing that this was a "small scale use."

That makes a difference to me. If it was a one-timer, it might have been a mistake, a test, an accident, even a trial to see what the reaction would be.

I think what Obama meant was, "If chemical weapons are used as a deliberate, recurring policy, that's a red line."

'Course, that ain't what he SAID.
And, of course, that red line wasn't, "You use chemical weapons even once, we invade and keep coming until we've got your ass."

There are degrees of involvement, of response. Air strikes, drone operations, a no fly-zone enforced by the USA-- all of those are military actions involving the US military, an institution already over worked. Arming the rebel forces, or increasing the armorment of them, would be a satisfactory response as well.

Maybe Obama oughtta send a request to Congress, for a Declaration of War, a draft to enlarge the army, and a massive budget request for weaponry and personnel budgets, to get an up or down vote on the record for how far Congress is willing to go. Maybe oughtta recommend a tax increase to fund same. Call the hawks' bluff, as it were.

Is there seriously anyone left on the planet who gives two fucks what John McCain has to say about anything at all?

This is the dude who picked Sarah Palin as his running mate. That tells you everything you need to know about his decision-making capabilities.

*IF* it's true. Big "IF".

And yes, it can still be fear mongering even if it's true.

Kim Jong Un has a nuclear weapon (allegedly), and there's still plenty of fear mongering going on in the West about him. It's true he has nukes (maybe even more than one, possibly), but that still doesn't make him any kind of imminent threat.

A fertilizer plant in West, Texas has killed more people with chemical weapons than the Syrian military has. Where's the outrage there? Where's the massive manhunt for the criminal mastermind who was CEO of the plant?

The fact is, Obama has no good options. He'll pick the least worst one, providing some kind of weapons to the rebels. That will make us feel better, neutralize the liberal interventionists and conservative Republicans who've been blasting him and respond to those who say he's backing away from his red line.

It won't turn the tide in Syria or necessarily prevent al-Assad from using chemical weapons. The other alternatives -- do nothing or design a proactive and comprehensive military strategy to take out the al-Assads -- aren't in the cards.

A nuanced and thorough examination of the situation and the options. Rap and the knee-jerkers won't like it because it's not John Wayne simplistically talking about kicking Assad's ass or bombing them all back to the stone age.

How many dollars and lives do they want Obama to spend to remove this bozo? Well, of course that's a rhetorical question-- they don't REALLY care what it costs, especially not in lives or the blood of America's not-rich, or if it succeeds or not, they just want to be able to hang the price tag around Obama's neck, and on any other Democrat.

The whole situation is deeply distressing. A civil war and a proxy war for numerous other countries who each support their own faction for their own reasons. Russia and Iran support Assad. Western nations and Saudi Arabia support the opposition. Islamist extremists benefit. No one can just waltz in without careful considerations of every other outsider's reaction.

How can anything good ever come of this?

Meanwhile you have 1.4 million refugees and many more internally displaced in need of support. 70.000 killed. World heritage sites damaged or destroyed.

You want to do something, but what can you really do that might not make things worse? Well, I guess everyone with fingers in the pie could spontaneously decide to work together to minimize all that civilian suffering but it hasn't happened so far, so...

Excuse me, but I wasn't the one who drew a SIMPLISTIC red line in the sand. That would be the Presidential bystander himself, BHO. Now that this line of his has been crossed, what's he doing?

Nothing. Way to throw that super power weight around, Barry.

If it's dollars, Barry has no problem spending other people's money. The real issue is the political cost. And McCain simply states that doing nothing may be as costly as joining in on the fray. Depending on who wins. It's a Catch 22, really. Pointing out that fact is by no means " fear mongering ", in the least. It's just being honest and pragmatic.

Yes, Brenda, unfortunately he is very much for real. Our Favorite War Monger, is John McCain. Imagine if he'd won...we'd still be officially in Iraq, have no plans to leave Afghanistan, probably be in Libya and on our way to Syria...and maybe North Korea, too...

I agree, NewOld, "The fact is, Obama has no good options." Of course the right wants war; it benefits the military-industrial complex, and enhances "America's might". They always want war. And Mike, there are far too many who listen to John Wayne McCain, you know that perfectly well...they're out there hollering right along with him. Like Rap...who isn't worth responding to, since he'll never give up on his defense of Iraq and the mythical WMDs, much less show an ounce of common sense when it comes to war ANYWHERE. We shouldn't even acknowledge him anymore, he's been so far left behind; McCain says what he says as much for political reasons as because it's what he believes; Rap never gets beyond Blind Belief. Right - Good; Left - Bad; it's that simple for him, on EVERYTHING.

Rouka, you nailed it. And you're not having a Cynical Thursday, you're having a Thursday. Aren't all wars pretty much proxy wars--especially nowadays? It's truly a global village, and everyone has bets on one pony or the other.

U.S. policy on Syria still lacks coherence

By Editorial Board, Published: May 1

THE MUDDLE that is President Obama’s policy on Syria has grown still muddier. On Tuesday the president backed away from a “red line” he had drawn on the use of chemical weapons by the regime of Bashar al-Assad, setting the threshold for proof of a violation in such a way as to virtually exclude the possibility that one could ever be confirmed. Yet that same day his aides leaked to The Post and other news organizations the news that the president might soon reverse his long-standing opposition to providing Syrian rebels with arms. And the administration readied yet another effort to persuade Russia to abandon its support of the Assad regime in favor of a negotiated political transition.

Can any coherence be found in this? A charitable interpretation might be that Mr. Obama wishes to avoid immediate U.S. intervention but wants to pressure Moscow into changing its position by letting it be known that the alternative is greater U.S. support for the rebels. If so, Mr. Obama is being too clever. His weak and legalistic words about the need to verify a “chain of custody” on any chemical-weapons use and his declaration that even a hard confirmation would lead only to a “rethink [of] the range of options” simply invite further chemical attacks.

... But if Mr. Obama continues to pursue a policy of awaiting U.N. consensus and deferring to Russia, the result will be more crossings of his red line — and grave damage to U.S. interests.

This just in--- well, at least, I just saw it.

Pat Buchanan defends Obama, sort of...
Quote:

Why would Obama even consider this?

Because he blundered badly. Foolishly, he put his credibility on the line by warning that any Syrian use of chemical weapons would cross a "red line" and be a "game changer" with "enormous consequences."

Not only was this ultimatum unwise, Obama had no authority to issue it. If Syria does not threaten or attack us, Obama would need congressional authorization before he could constitutionally engage in acts of war against Syria. When did he ever receive such authorization?

Moreover, there is no proof Syrian President Bashar Assad ever ordered the use of chemical weapons.

U.S. intelligence agencies maintain that small amounts of the deadly toxin sarin gas were likely used. But if it did happen, we do not know who ordered it.

Syrians officials deny that they ever used chemicals.

Yes, in a nutshell nicely written.
A shame its becoming another partisan football match in the US. This is a horrific civil war which is causing shocking suffering in the region.
The issue is whether intervention would do any good. Past recent examples have demonstrated something of the opposite. Has any good come from the interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan? Would any of us have any idea anyway?

Russian air strikes in Syria have killed over 400 civilians since September this year, monitoring groups say.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said the death toll from September 30 - when the strikes were launched - until November 20 stood at 403 civilians, a figure that includes 97 children.

What the bombing has caused

Over 400 civilians killed since September this year, including 97 children.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights puts the figure at at least 526, including 137 children.

Since last October, at least 42,234 air strikes have been documented.

Over 22,370 'barrel bombs' have also been dropped in that period resulting in the death of 6,889 civilians, including 1,436 children, and injuring another 35,000 civilians.

At least 100,000 people have fled from Aleppo, while another 1,000 fled an Atma displaced camp in Idlib's suburbs.

The Syrian conflict has killed at least 250,000 people, according to the UN.
