Oral Sex Study: Can Cunnilingus Ward Off Infidelity?

According to a recently published study, one of the reasons men perform oral sex on female partners may be to minimize the risk of infidelity.

The study, published late last month in the Journal of Evolutionary Psychology, sought to discover why men perform oral sex on women, since the act does not lead directly to reproduction.

After surveying 243 adult men in heterosexual relationships, the researchers deduced that cunnilingus is used to discourage women from cheating, a theory the authors refer to as a "mate-retention strategy."

The research suggests that men perform oral sex on their female partners in order "to minimize the risk of their partner’s infidelity by increasing her relationship satisfaction."

The study has garnered some negative reactions across the web: An article on The Gloss wondered why the researchers aren't "questioning the evolutionary advantage of oral sex for men? Isn’t that purposeless, too?" And Handbag.com writer Kate Gilbert pointed out that perhaps men perform oral sex because it's pleasurable: "Sorry science guys -- sometimes things are just meant for fun."

There are many places I could take this discussion, but I'll first leave the floor open for comments.

Apparently not for these scientists. They only studied the one and not the other.

Safe to say that Michael Douglas was not a part of the sample group ?

If you need a guffaw, go read the comments on those links. That's really why I wanted to post this, to see if the same goofiness came out of this crowd. Maybe it will eventually. The fireworks are still flying on the west coast.

My two initial responses to this:

What the hell is wrong with creatures doing something just because it's fun? Do we need to fund studies as to how evolutionarily important FUN is? A species that's all depressed will off itself before procreating. Fun is good.

Or just leave evolution out of it and stick with: fun is good.

Another thing: Why no study of fellatio? I guess the scientists never asked: why in the world do women do that? Interesting.

I giggled!

Plus, it's not always even a reciprocal exchange. Some people - both genders - just like performing oral sex on their partners, possibly more than the partner wants it. Yes, there are people - both genders - who don't like being on the receiving end. I strongly suspect they are a minority, though.

I also doubt that if your partner is inclined to straying from you, oral sex will stop them, especially if their attraction to you has waned. You can't, so to speak, fan the flames of passion, if they have already gone out. Now THAT's uncomfortable.

Silly scientists.

Silly scientists indeed. Amazing at what some folks will waste time and $ on, simply to publish results about " something ".
