At least 67 people have been shot across the city since Wednesday afternoon during this long holiday weekend, 11 fatally.

Saturday evening's shooting, four people in serious-to-critical condition and one person in fair-to-serious condition were taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, while one person in serious-to-critical and one person in fair-to-serious condition were taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital, according to the Chicago Fire Department's media office.

One victim, a 49-year-old man, was pronounced dead, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. He was identified as Terry Patterson; his home address was not available. He had been taken to Mount Sinai Hospital with a gunshot wound the groin, Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Joshua Purkiss said.

At Stroger were: a woman, 72, with a wound to an ankle; a woman, 41, with a wound to her right thigh; a man, 43, with gunshot wounds to the leg and back; a man, 45, shot in the penis and right thigh; and a man, 48, shot in the leg and buttocks. At Mount Sinai were: a man, 31, shot in the wrist, and a woman, 20, shot in the right leg. Police described all the victims as having had their conditions stabilized.

The first reports of the shooting came in to the Chicago Fire Department at 5:55 p.m. and about 6 p.m. an Emergency Medical Services Plan 1 was instituted, sending six ambulances to the scene. The EMS plan was secured at 6:15 p.m.

The incident occurred in the 2800 block of West Flournoy Street, according to police. Police said that a van, possibly a black Dodge, pulled up and two people fired on a group on a porch and possibly in the front yard of a home, one shooting from a sunroof, one from a window of the van.

According to the daughter of the 72-year-old woman that was shot, her mother was sitting on the porch scratching Lotto tickets when she was shot. Her mother also had her ribs broken as people rushed into the house once the shooting began. Her brother-in-law and niece were also injured in the shooting. She said the victims were standing outside working on a car.

Tonya Hunter, 51, a community activist in North Lawndale, was working on a freelance article about gun violence for the Chicago Defender just before the shooting occurred.

She asked one man to explain the difference between the sound of a gunshot and a firecracker. Just then, the shots broke out, Hunter said.

"He said, 'That's the difference,' " Hunter recalled.

The two ran in front of a nearby church to shield themselves, Hunter said.

"It was so fast," she said.

Patricia Kendrick, 26, was inside her apartment in the 2900 block of West Harrison Street when she heard the shots. Her friend Kierra Hester, 22, was on her way back from the store and said she first thought the noise was firecrackers left over from Fourth of July celebrations.

But as the sound got closer to her, she realized the sound was something far more ominous.

"I yelled, 'They out here shooting,' " said Hester, a resident of the 2700 block of West Roosevelt Road.

Police were on the scene within three minutes, Kendrick said. The site of the shooting is near a police station and her children's daycare, she added.

A shooting took place very close by on July 4 at the car wash near the intersection of Harrison and Francisco, both women said. The street has been the scene of tensions between two rival gangs, both said. Thursday afternoon, Steve Mabins, 21, was shot several times on the 600 block of South Francisco Avenue and died later at the hospital, authorities said.

In a separate attack about 6 p.m. Saturday night, a person was shot in the arm in the 500 block of West 110th Street in the Roseland neighborhood on the South Side, police said. The 17-year-old boy was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center but was not cooperating with investigators, police said.

In the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side, a 24-year-old was shot three times in his legs after someone chased him in a house in the 800 block of North Springfield Avenue. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital after the shooting, which happened about 9:45 p.m.

A 24-year-old man was shot in the face near the intersection of Adams Street and Laramie Avenue in the South Austin neighborhood on the West Side. He was shot before midnight and dropped off at Loretto Hospital, police said.

In the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side, a 22-year-old man standing near a van was shot in the back and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in good condition. Someone approached him near the corner of St. Louis Avenue and 61st Street about 2:05 a.m

Meanwhile during the Chicago war zone weekend of shooting carnage, Chicago libs were out protesting. The demonstrators marched from Chase Park to the home of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel to protest against what they call his austerity cuts to the city and school budgets.

I had heard it was 70+ shot, but not as many fatally.

Also, there was the horrific train disaster in Quebec, where scores are missing / dead.

What does OUR news cycle get filled with ? A 777 crash which cost 2 lives, and a self defense trial in Florida.

Yes they sure did Whozit.

Democratic Governor Pat Quinn had objected to major parts of the concealed carry proposal. But both chambers of the state legislature voted on Tuesday to override his veto, allowing concealed carry to become the law.

Whites in Chicago don't need concealed guns. All 67 shooting victims were blacks. Funny though, how black leaders like Obama, Sharpton, and Jackson have nothing at all to say about this. At least The Chicago Tribune and Fox News don't bury this story to focus solely on Trayvon Martin.

Don't worry Fox News will go back to ignoring it as soon as Obama is no longer the President.

There's no such thing as a "white" Hispanic, but don't tell that to the "white" Hispanics.

A couple of thoughts............

It is an ongoing problem to get media attention and focus; black on black crime, I gather, is not newsworthy, too commonplace.

But we must be careful in assuming certain things. It is systemic of larger problems - education, employment, self-esteem, self-determination - all lacking in the poorer communities across the nation; for blacks, Hispanics and low-income whites as well.

Drugs, guns, prostitution are all too easily accessible in those hopeless communities. Too easy to make a quick buck, and all those things turns in on itself. It creates a whole new set of problems. Rage and anger have a tendency to surface in the most inopportune times.

For the entire history of the NYT, the term 'white-hispanic' was never used to describe any individual. The term had rarely been used at all, in any form.

Until George Zimmerman made the news.

Zimmerman is as 'whtie' as Obama.

All that's true, but how can you even try to start to fix problems like those when you are afraid to call it what it is. Obama, Holder, Sharpton, NBC, CNN, Congressional Black Caucus all had lots to say about the "killing" of Trayvon Martin, and were quick to make judgements long before the trial even started. They found in the Zimmerman case an opportunity with a race-based story to hype up and divide the country with vigor and zeal. But calling out blacks, who commit 91% of the crimes against other blacks, is something they're afraid to do because it just doesn't suit or fit their ideological and political agendas. The real crime in Chicago is an acceptance of the status quo.
