So my Wrangler has has this horrible shaking problem and since my mechanic is failing and failing again to fix it, I finally turned to the internet. Eureka, I found it! The Death Wobble. Now I can tell my mechanic what needs to be done and hopefully I can stop being terrified of hitting bumps when I'm on the interstate.

Anyhow, check out the guy at :50 into the news video.

WOW.

I've driven a Jeep from Seattle to Portland and back, and luckily didn't encounter any such problems. It was an older model, so I dunno how far back this stuff goes back.

Apparently it's 2005-2010. Mine is 2005.

What really sucks is that now there is no way I'll sell this Jeep to anyone. I am planning to change to something with better mileage eventually, but with this shaking issue my only option is to trade it in to a dealer. :/

Yeah, and Chrysler's response is, to put it mildly, unsatisfying.

Ouch.

Have you checked out TerryMasons overview and rundown on the Jeepz.com forum on this ?
Seems the best of show for possible resolutions.

I am sadly all too familiar with this one, as it was common to the Oldsmobile Alero as well, due to poor design causing the front brake rotors to overheat, then warp and shake, which wore out the suspension and front end mechanicals very quickly, thus making the wobble worse, thus making the wear faster... lather, rinse, repeat.
GM paid a 50 million dollar bribe, essentially, to avoid a recall, and my 99 Alero was lemon-lawed for that particular problem, although the pittance we got didn't go too far towards the endless parts replacement - not to mention the safety issue of drastically unreliable brakes due to wear, on average they lasted 1200-1500 miles, at best.

My advice is get the hell rid of that vehicle, even if you solve the wobble initially, it's a temporary solution at best and you'll dig yourself in ever deeper as that wobble chews up parts and necessitates their replacement.

Dunno what your specific vehicular requirements are, or price range, but my ex recently bought a Prius 2C which was hella cheaper than expected (around 20K) and I must say it's a damn nice car.

Me, I went retro and have a classic 1985 BMW E-type without all them "fancy gewjaws" which drives like a rally car on valium, till you really punch it and then it drives like a rally car - cause it *IS*, it's just set up for fuel economy till you trip the hammer - I am neither jesting nor exaggering that, either.

Rally driver Patrick Snijers used one back at the 88 Manx rally to curbstomp the competition.

Of course mine isn't full kit, it's basically stock save for a Magnaflow high performance exhaust, K&N airfilters, and Pirelli tires on the rear with all-weathers on the front for best handling.

What I really REALLY want is my 1989 Nissan 300Z back. Oh man I loved that car!

But since those are rare now and I can't afford a new Z, I am likely to go for something like a Prius. Eventually. I'll stick with the Jeep for a while. My daily commute is roughly 1.5 miles, and I have financial weirdness coming up.

I just have to survive about 10 hours of interstate driving this weekend. I might just rent something to be safe.

A big ole FU to Chrysler for this! And we wonder why American engineering gets a bad rap? My 15 year old (at the time) Nissan kicked this Jeep's ass!

Well hell, for 1.5 miles I'd get a scooter or something - my ex has a Roketa MC-54-250B she bought for like $1800USD, and while the QC is pretty crummy, given it's a clone of the 257cc Linhai/Suzuki engine I could get parts, and of much better quality... of course, that one is a bit, erm, extreme in that it's too PHYSICALLY LARGE FOR ME TO OPERATE, oy oy oy.

Of course you could go 50cc Scooter/Moped too, but there's the issues of weather and pyscho jerk drivers who'll try to kill you just for fun so maybe nyahhhh.

While the mileage kinda sucks, you can get used PT Cruisers ridiculously cheap, and since it's also a Chrysler product you can trade that deathtrap in without a problem - some of our residents have them and they're not so bad, and did I mention... dirt cheap ?
*laughs*

And the problem is that it's NOT american engineering, not any more.
Most crummy so-called-american-made cars these days are (North) American Made, which means slammed together by convict labor in mexican sweatshops out of cheap chinese parts forged out of crummy alloy potmetal and toxic plastics with laughable quality control.
Seriously - just one easy example, the Chevy Aveo is 96% south korean in origin and manufacture....
As opposed to the "dirty foreign" Nissan trucks, built right here in fucking INDIANA, by AMERICAN workers.
Oh.. Gee, can you TELL this is kind of an *issue* with me ?
(sorry, on a roll here)

And isn't it funny how Toyotas minor, unreplicable (given that the party in question more or less admitted to lying) and completely failsafed so called brake failure was front page news and an excuse for weeks of highly racist and nationalistic bashing, despite the failure being in an AMERICAN MADE part from an AMERICAN factory... which in the end cost the Midwest a potential Toyota plant and all the jobs and economic improvement which coulda gone with it, cause they chose to take their business elsewhere rather than deal with us hypernationalist racist cretins...

While the massive, ACTUALLY DANGEROUS failures of the so-called-american auto industry, a lot of them due to outsourcing to sweatshop, convict or even deathcamp labor in third world countries, is all back page news, heavily suppressed and even denied, defied, or bought off (See Also: That 50 million dollar bribe) while they send all the damn jobs overseas and then rake it in on tax breaks for being an "american" company ?

I did get a laugh at a recent article on which drivers are the biggest jerks, with BMW coming in at #1 and Prius a close second - I told the ex we bagged the two-fer and she says to me...

Well I always knew BMW comes standard with a drivers side douche bag.
