MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry suggested the term “Obamacare” and the N-word are interchangeable, claiming both were “conceived by a group of wealthy white men who needed to . . . render [a black man] inferior and unequal and diminish his accomplishments.”

Harris-Perry opened her show Sunday morning with a sober monologue on President Obama’s push to rebrand his failing healthcare law:

HARRIS-PERRY: “I want to talk today about a controversial word. It’s a word that has been with us for years. And like it or not, it’s indelibly printed in the pages of American history. A word that was originally intended as a derogatory term, meant to shame and divide and demean. The word was conceived of by a group of wealthy white men who needed a way to put themselves above and apart from a black man, to render him inferior and unequal and diminish his accomplishments.

“President Obama has been labelled with this word by his opponents, and at first he rose above it, hoping that if he could just make a cause for what he’d achieved, his opponents would fail in making their label stick. But no matter how many successes that he had as president, he realized there were still many people for whom he’d never be anything more than that one disparaging word — a belief he knew was held not just by his political opponents, but also by a significant portion of the American electorate.

“And so he decided if you can’t beat them, you’ve got to join them. So he embraced the word and made it his own, sending his opposition a message they weren’t expecting: ‘If that’s what you want me to be, I’ll be that.’

“Y’all know the word that I’m talking about. Obamacare! That’s right! I said it and I’m not ashamed, and neither is President Obama!”

What are they drinking over there at MSNBC? Olbermann fired, Baldwin fired, Bashir fired, Shuster fired, Shultz suspended, Scarborough suspended, Halperin suspended ... Now Melissa Perry melts down on live tv with this. I didn't think she could outdo herself after she wore tampons dangling from her ears to 'protest' the new Texas abortion law a couple of months ago, but clearly I underestimated her insanity.

doesn't sound like she explicitly made the equivalence you claim in your header. She MEANT that, but she only implied it, raised the expectation. Like Byte said, a bait and switch.

Obviously she didn't "equate Obamacare with the n-word" at all, so the title is a blatant lie. She never said anything like that...she did, as others realized, a satirical bait and switch, since people hearing what she said would think of the "n-word" up until she actually said Obamacare. The concept is valid, that no matter what he did or if the program was successful or good for the country, the right would go on tagging the ACA with the term. It's in their interest and it's worked, many studies have shown people respond more positively to the exact same healthcare initiative when it's not called "Obamacare", so the smear tactic has worked. But to claim she "equated" it with anything is pure, unadulterated bullshit and you know it.

The title was so bizarre I expected something else...I no longer watch MSNBC and never cared much for Harris-Perry, but "melts down"? Seriously?? Pretty pathetic attempt.

She's a lame SNL skit, at best.

Almost feel sorry for her.

Except it wasn't a SNL skit. It was a news program, or what embarrassingly passes for news at MSNBC. She wasn't trying to be sarcastic. She wasn't trying to be funny. She was dead serious. She was trying to be controversial in an effort to shift the Obamacare disaster to "wealthy white men" which for her means Republicans. She is an outright militant racist and a willful Obama propagandist.

It's an editorial. MSNBC is pretty much all editorials from what I can tell. Whenever there's a program with a starring "anchor", it's an editorial, and the show is going to be slanted heavily with the anchor's bias. Expecting news out of shows like this is like expecting day time talk shows to know what the hell they're talking about.

It's like watching the Daily Show for news. Yeah, that probably isn't going to work out well. No one takes this stuff seriously or thinks any anchors on any news channel are legitimate anymore. We all know they're all bought and paid for.

They know it, we know it. So this was pretty clearly a joke.

Amen. True of so many "news" shows nowadays. Including FauxNews.

But it's nice Jong knows what she was thinking, what she intended, and what she believes so completely, despite everyone else understanding what she was doing. I'm happy for him/her.

The sad part is that she actually fancies herself as a legitimate TV news talent. And she tries so very hard , too. It's like a child playing with blocks, so proud as if she's the very first to ever spell out 'C-A-T ' by stacking them one on top of the other...

Where was she for HILLARY-Care ?

Has she ever heard of REAGANomics ?

Who were the " rich , white men " who dreamed up those things, to belittle the blacks and keep them in their place ?
