More to it than that, Nick. Also:
Quote:

Ever wonder why the right wing continues to dominate talk radio, even as it loses elections?

Vertical integration: Precisely what the federal government has moved to ban in the television and movie industries with anti-trust actions. But the radio business has gotten a free pass.

Premiere Radio Networks, which syndicates righties Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, and Dr. Laura, among others, is owned by the nation's largest radio-station conglomerate, Clear Channel. Clear Channel, thanks to FCC deregulation, was allowed to gobble up over 1000 radio stations -- including 16 of the most powerful, (lower-case) clear-channel AM stations in major markets.

Today, Clear Channel either owns or programs most of the nation's 58 strongest, 50,000-watt AM radio stations, liberally stocking them with right-wing talk shows. Among them: Los Angeles' KFI, New York's WABC, Detroit's WJR, Denver's KOA, Portland's KEX, and Chicago's WLS.

Yes, Clear Channel does own liberal Air America stations. But none of them is a 50,000-watt "blowtorch." Instead, Clear Channel puts shows like Thom Hartmann's on its smaller, 5,000-and 10,000-watt "sticks" (antennas).

Clear Channel is more than a corporate name. It's also a radio descriptor: A clear-channel radio station is a powerful, 50,000-watt signal with interference-free nightly coverage 750 miles from its city.

Clear Channel owns 17 of those coveted licenses, and its Premiere supplies much of the programming to many of the rest. There are only one or two 50,000-watt stations carrying Air America's -- or any -- liberal shows.

Wherever Clear Channel owns a big AM radio station and other smaller ones, it always puts Premiere's Hannity, Rush, et al on its biggest signal. This puts liberal stations at a big disadvantage in virtually all large markets -- where the real radio money is.

"The prevailing assumption right now in talk radio," one talk programmer told me. "Is that you won't lose money on conservative talk. That could change, but it'll take time."

In the large metropolitan areas where Clear Channel owns station "clusters" -- usually five or more stations -- their sales force concentrates mostly on selling ads for the big, usually right-wing stations.

"If you can sell a 60-second spot for $200 on the big conservative station, or the same spot for $20 on the 5,000-watt liberal station, which one would YOU sell?" a radio sales vet told me during this investigation. Ka ching.

"You need a dedicated sales force for the Air America stations to succeed financially - one that sells ads only for that station."

There's no doubt San Antonio-based Clear Channel prefers pushing Premiere's largely conservative talkers: I once endured right-wing CNN hack Lou "Broken Borders" Dobbs kiss Clear Channel founder Lowry Mays' butt for an hour while "interviewing" glorified billboard salesman-turned-broadcaster Mays during the keynote event at the National Association of Broadcasters' big convention in San Francisco.

FDR's Justice Department took the powerful movie studios to court in the 1930's in a major antitrust case to stop them from both supplying product to -- and owning -- movie theatres.

In the 1970's, the FCC imposed rules to stop vertical integration by the then-Big Three TV networks: It banned them from owning the shows they aired in prime time. (The so-called "fin-syn" rules).

But radio has gotten a free pass from legal action by the government. Which is the big reason why Premiere and its powerful owner Clear Channel have a stranglehold today on talk radio.

What you mentioned is certainly true, Nick, but the old "follow the money" (and money = influence) is part of it, too.

My thoughts exactly. After being addicted, could he just go back to an occasional pill? Social use? Does not compute.

(Though the thought of a party with people 'socially' popping, snorting or shooting oxycontin does stretch the imagination somewhat. That sounds more like a 'shooting gallery'.)

That's the myth that they tell you, to keep you coming back for treatment. Sure, anyone CAN become physically dependent on something, but if his body his no longer craving Oxycontin, then he's no longer an " addict ".

And so what if he's using drugs or not ? What's that to you or anyone ? He's not hurting anyone , is he ? His body, his choice, right ?

Or does that only apply to murdering life inside the womb ?

Yup, pretty amusing.

He's wrong, of course...once an addict, always an addict, just like alcoholism, but Rap will spew whatever's convenient when it comes to how he WANTS things to be. As to whether Limbaugh uses drugs or not, it's no skin off my nose; it's the hypocrisy that makes Rushbo ridiculous. A guy with his record judging others about marriage, sex, addiction, etc. is about as ridiculous as the Duck Dynasty guy spouting what's "proper" regarding sex, after dating his wife when she was 14, kicking her and their kids out of the house when she found religion and advising others to marry 15-16-year old girls. Simple as that.

Okay. In fairness, it doesn't matter if he's an addict or a hypocrite or ANY of that.

But, just so you know, you're underestimating the way that chemical addiction alters the brain pathways. Craving isn't just a result of the chemical dependency or a symptom of withdrawal, craving happens even after the former addict has been through the withdrawal.

While a former addict may no longer be physically dependent on their drug of choice, they still very much have cravings, as a result of chronic abuse tying into the reward pathway and rewriting the reward pathway baseline. And because the pathways have been so altered, if they succumb to the craving and start using again, they become chemically dependent again more quickly than if they were first time abusers. Not to mention that people who become addicts were more prone to being addicts in the first place, and may become addicted to something else in replacement. It's not a "myth" propagated by treatment programs, once an addict you are potentially always susceptible to being an addict again.

Oxycontin is an opioid, just like heroin. Chances are pretty good that monkey will be on Rush's back the rest of his life.

All I know is that anyone CAN get addicted, if they so choose to. But I find great hypocrisy in those who gleefully accuse Rush of being an addict, when I bet many of their own personal heroes and possibly friends, family members, have endured something similar.

Knowing anyone CAN get addicted, I've chosen to not partake of such substances. Even so, I still believe the human mind can over come damn near anything, provided that person really wants to do so. Even if you lose a leg, or both legs, doesn't keep you from being able to run a marathon. Yeah, it's a challenge, but certainly doable. Taking joy in claiming Rush is still and addict is like pointing to a amputee and laughing " You don't have your legs! ha ha ha ! " It's the lowest form of inhumanity there is, to be honest.

Well... Agreed, with the caveat that sometimes assholes lose legs too. Humans tend to be a wide range of both humane and inhumane, and largely dependent on whether or not they like or dislike the person they're directing that behaviour at.

I can hardly wholesale condemn the activity and the sentiment when it proves useful in my own attitudes and dealings.

Besides, we're all jerks, really, on some level or in some way or another. Despite being such, sometimes people manage to do pretty decent things.

Thank you, Byte, that was eloquently done and right on point.

There is absolutely NO comparison to pointing to an amputee and laughing at them. Limbaugh has made a career out of denigrating others...we all remember Fluke being called a whore (and by extension, ANY woman who wanted coverage for contraceptives, which of course includes those who need it for medical problems), and has anyone forgotten him going after Michael J. Fox? He lays himself open to being called a hypocrite by his own words and deeds; to chastise others for hypocrisy is laughable, especially the way HE denigrates others right here!

As it happens, I have a brother-in-law who's an alcoholic. I went through it with him because he lived with us off and on for twenty years; I put him to bed, got rid of the bottles, and have known others who have been addicted to alcohol or drugs. I would never put them down, they've fought hard battles; but they're not out there making a fortune off being as nasty and shockingly disgusting as possible.

The simple fact is that Rap's little "red pill/blue pill" signature is ridiculous, and someone pointing out that Limbaugh IS a "blue pill addict" just as my brother-in-law will always be an alcoholic tho' he stopped drinking over a decade ago, is nothing but the truth. Rap's just playing his game; let him, it changes nothing.

Rush certainly has NOT " made a career out of denigrating others ", though it's true that some who have deserved denigration have received it. It's crystal clear that you do NOT listen to Rush, you only rely on what MediaMatters tells you he said.

25 years of broadcasting, and all you have is Sandra Fluke ? For wanting OTHER PEOPLE to pay for that which is already widely available, NOW ?

He never " went after " Michael J. Fox. He honestly said what MJF later ADMITTED TO DOING !!! How the hell does that not sink into your brain? RUSH WAS 100% RIGHT !

Quote:

I had made a deliberate choice to appear before the subcommittee without medication. It seemed to me that this occasion demanded that my testimony about the effects of the disease, and the urgency we as a community were feeling, be seen as well as heard. For people who had never observed me in this kind of shape, the transformation must have been startling
Michael J. Fox, Lucky Man

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_J._Fox#Illness_and_activism

And that's all Rush did was to repeat what MJF SAID HE DOES HIMSELF ! Rush wasn't " bashing " or " attacking " him for doing that, he was just being straight forward and honest about what ACTUALLY goes on.

Now, to be fair, Rush was taking issue with MJF trying to gain undue sympathy, under the guise that EMBRYONIC Stem cells are the only cure, when in fact, they aren't. Our OWN stem cells have a far better track record, as evidence 4 years later, than the harvesting of EMBRYONIC stem cells.

Seriously, some of you joke that I'm the one who isn't savvy enough, intelligent enough or learned on certain issues to understand CONTEXT, but it's clear you put a bag over your head and shove it in the ground when the issues is something you just can't accept.

And if you listened, you could hear a big guffaw from over here, too.

What Rap wrote is a flat-out lie.

Limbaugh: "He is exaggerating the effects of the disease," Limbaugh told listeners. "He's moving all around and shaking and it's purely an act. . . ." ( http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/10/24/AR2006
102400691.html
)

"Anyone who knows the disease well would regard his movement as classic severe Parkinson's disease," said Elaine Richman, a neuroscientist in Baltimore who co-wrote "Parkinson's Disease and the Family." "Any other interpretation is misinformed."

Whether Fox took his meds or not isn't the issue; it wasn't an act. Limbaugh had to back track later on. He was forced eventually to give one of his non-apology apologies:
Quote:

"Now people are telling me they have seen Michael J. Fox in interviews and he does appear the same way in the interviews as he does in this commercial," Limbaugh said, according to a transcript on his Web site. "All right then, I stand corrected. . . . So I will bigly, hugely admit that I was wrong, and I will apologize to Michael J. Fox, if I am wrong in characterizing his behavior on this commercial as an act."

Of course, he then immediately pivoted to a different critique: "Michael J. Fox is allowing his illness to be exploited and in the process is shilling for a Democratic politician."

Rap is quite free to write whatever lies he wants, but they won't be allowed to stand. I gave two examples everyone remembers; there's no need to give more, and yes, I've heard Limbaugh speak...not for long, because my stomach started churning too much to endure it. I've also read his transcripts when an issue has come up, gone directly to the transcript and often QUOTED from the transcript. Rap's blind worship of Limbaugh notwithstanding, anyone who's heard him has no doubts that everyone's fair game for his shock-jock tactics.

Too little medication or too much can cause as many problems as the disease itself.
Quote:

Well, actually, I've been erring on the side of caution — I think 'erring' is actually the right word — in that I've been medicating perhaps too much, in the sense [that] ... the symptoms ... people see in some of these interviews that I have been on are actually dyskinesia, which is a reaction to the medication. Because if I were purely symptomatic with Parkinson's symptoms, a lot of times speaking is difficult. There's a kind of a cluttering of speech and it's very difficult to sit still, to sit in one place. You know, the symptoms are different, so I'd rather kind of suffer the symptoms of dyskinesia... this kind of weaving and this kind of continuous thing is much preferable, actually, than pure Parkinson's symptoms. So that's what I generally do... I haven't had any, you know, problems with pure Parkinson's symptoms in any of these interviews, because I'll tend to just make sure that I have enough Sinemet in my system and, in some cases, too much. But to me, it's preferable. It's not representative of what I'm like in my everyday life. I get a lot of people with Parkinson's coming up to me saying, "You take too much medication." I say, Well, you sit across from Larry King and see if you want to tempt it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_J._Fox#Illness_and_activism

In other words, if Fox didn't take medication so that people could see the ACTUAL effects of the disease, that's not "faking it" or "an act", period. If he over-medicated in hopes of NOT showing the symptoms, that's an aspect of the disease as well. For Limbaugh to immediately leap to "he's faking it" is the issue, and the only issue.

Limbaugh isn't the subject of this thread, and I'm not going to be drawn into any more of Rap's disgusting efforts to defend him or trigger me. As someone who suffers from symptoms that, like Fox's, sometimes cannot be controlled or where the medications to control them can cause other bad symptoms, I take Limbaugh's bullshit and Rap's attempts to defend it personally. The mere fact that Rap is convinced people can 'overcome' addiction says it all for me; I'm tempted to wish he could endure what others have so he MIGHT understand what he's talking about.

it wasn't an act, and even Limbaugh had to back track later on.

MJF was showing the world what the disease really does to him. True. That isn't pretend. It's not an exaggeration. But that still doesn't mean he didn't put on a show for Congress.

Quote:

Of course, he then immediately pivoted to a different critique: "Michael J. Fox is allowing his illness to be exploited and in the process is shilling for a Democratic politician."

Whether MJF saw it that way or not, it IS how those on the Left saw it. He was the poster boy NOT for a cure, but for their political agenda. The two causes are NOT one in the same, sad to say.

Rap is quite free to write whatever lies he wants, but they won't be allowed to stand.

I've written no lies, what so ever. But your lies ARE allowed to stand ? Is that how it works ?

Quote:

I gave two examples everyone remembers; there's no need to give more,

Because you can't, the 2 given weren't examples in the least

Quote:

and yes, I've heard Limbaugh speak...not for long, because my stomach started churning too much to endure it. I've also read his transcripts when an issue has come up, gone directly to the transcript and often QUOTED from the transcript. Rap's blind worship of Limbaugh notwithstanding, anyone who's heard him has no doubts that everyone's fair game for his shock-jock tactics.

I've heard Obama speak, but that doesn't make me a flaming collectivist either. Saying you've heard him speak, or read his transcripts, isn't the same as KNOWING what the man is saying, his context, and getting the inflections in his voice, so you know when he's kidding and when he's making a dead serious point.

But carry on w/ your ignorance and your lies, Niki. You're batting 0.000 so far, why mess up a good thing ?

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Okay, I gotta get out of here. Rap is starting to piss me off, which rarely happens 'cuz I don't take him seriously. But what he's trying to say now is so outrageous it's unbelievable.

I'M calling Michael J. Fox a liar??? Omg...

"MJF does admit to putting on a show, of sorts, to help make his case before Congress"--no he did NOT. He didn't take his meds; ergo, he was displaying nothing but precisely the symptoms of parkinsons. That's what the Congressional testimony was about…how does Rap not get that?

"MJF was showing the world what the disease really does to him. True. That isn't pretend. It's not an exaggeration. But that still doesn't mean he didn't put on a show for Congress." That's a DIRECT contradiction, for gawd's sake! Exhibiting the effects of a disease is not "putting on a show" any way you cut it. By that measure, an epileptic who falls down and has a seizure is "putting on a show" as well...or a hypoglycemic fainting...or a diabetic going into shock...

"Saying you've heard him speak, or read his transcripts, isn't the same as KNOWING what the man is saying, his context, and getting the inflections in his voice". Say whaaa? Watching a video of Limbaugh speaking isn't "knowing what he's saying", "getting the inflections in his voice"? What alternate reality is Rap now inhabiting????

Nope. Whatever it is, I don't want to inhabit it with him. Time for me to dive back into the real world and do something constructive. Rap's desperate double-speak will have ME wondering what color the sky is. I'll leave him to twist in the wind and play with himself.

…wow…

It's clear that Niki is afraid to know things which contradict her tightly held beliefs.

Rush is an evil, rich conservative, so nothing he says can POSSIBLY be right. I agree with and listen to Rush, so I'm equally guilty of being wrong. No matter what.

MJF didn't " forget " to take his meds before speaking to Congress.

He did so, on purpose, and with INTENT.

Oh, but it's true. It's TRUE!

You see, MJF admits that he has a habit of actually OVER medicating himself, when he goes out in public, so as to minimize the effects of his disease. He does so in order to do interviews and function more normally. So he concluded that, to really show what his life is like, the severity and problems Parkinson's inflicts on its victims, he wanted to pull back the curtain and let everyone in, so to say.

I think it was a brave thing for him to do.
