Belief in evolution among Republicans has dropped more than 10 percentage points since 2009, according to a new poll by the Pew Research Center.

Pew found that 43 percent of Republicans said they believed humans and other living beings had evolved over time, down from 54 percent in 2009. More (48 percent) said they believed all living things have existed in their present form since the beginning of time.

I'll tell ya what it means, we need Republicans back in the WH and controlling the Senate. We didn't have this problem back before Obama was elected.

Wow, thanks guys that's a keeper. Wasn't sure this was even worth posting, but it's paid for itself by getting Rap to FINALLY admit what he's here for and what he does. I need to post it on my computer to remind me to STOP trying to communicate with him. Just think; if we all stopped wasting our time letting ourselves be trolled, we might have time to have some real, actual DISCUSSIONS!

I KNOW what he's doing, but he puts up such amazingly outrageous things, I keep getting sucked in. Really need to work on that...

No, Byte, it's quite valid. Rap has several times admitted clearly that he wrote something for no other readon than to trigger others--in other words, he deliberately lied.

Once someone does that, they've lost all credibility for me. It's hard enough to accept that he might actually BELIEVE some of the things he posts, but his doing it to piss others off and get attention makes sense. Some of the things Rap posts go so far beyond mere partisanship, and off into the world of alternate reality, that it becomes pretty obvious he's trolling.

HE didn't claim he was being satirical...he agreed quite clearly that he was deliberately trolling to get a response. End of story, and good to remember.

Right, and I'm guessing you've never posted a thread trying to get a response out of the right-wing board members.

And never pushed a point in an argument even though you know the results will be entertaining.

But look, that aside. This was obviously and blatantly satire. I'm frankly stunned that any of you took AURaptor seriously - and no, someone saying something not meant to be taken seriously that people then DO take seriously, and them shaking their heads about it, is not trolling.

This is an indication of just how far this war you all have going on between you has gone - you immediately assume stupidity and think the worst of each other.

You can actually tell the stuff he believes from the stuff he jokes about. It's actually not that hard. That it stretches your belief that he thinks so differently from you on the stuff he's serious about is still not trolling.

Says the Gay Matriarch of Gay House that presides over Gay Land and encompasses all the Gay people from RWED to RWED.

Niki is a SERIOUSLY flawed woman. As Pee-Wee said, it takes one to know one......

Not that I'm a woman, but go ahead and think of me as one if that plays to your freaky sensibilities... :)

She had an easy way to bastardize me once because of my drunken behavior

It must be nice to be a severly aging "Princess" perched atop her ivory tower of malice and lies.

When I talk, I speak the TRUTH... at least the Truth as I see it, however flawed it may be.

Wanna talk interesting? Let's get one of her sons... any one of them... to post here regularly for a "he said, she said" session in the RWED.

The difference is, I KNOW I'm flawed...

YOU KNOW I'm flawed....

I don't hide it. You don't have to ever "cover" for me.

I'm SERIOUSLY NOT NORMAL, and you all saw me and my sparkling eyes and bright smile coming from a mile away.....

It's the Nikis you need to be worried about. Those innocuous bugs, slugs and other creepy-cralwies that seem to burrow into your ear and your psyche when you're not paying attention.

Seriously, don't listen to Niki's 20 new posts a day. It WILL rot your brain.

NOT ONE SINGLE ONE...

I'm all about getting into detail about where Niki went wrong if you ask about it, but I prefer to let her flounder around like the decaying wreck of an old woman she's let herself become.

HERE'S THE TRUTH.

There is not ONE SINGLE NEGATIVE WORD I've said about Obama today that I didn't say about GWB years ago. I'm (figuratively) willing to (figuratively) wage my house on that...... (figuratively).... but for real though.....

ANYBODY who pigeonholes me today as a "righty" is an ill-informed idiot.

If Niki were posting 8 years ago, she'd probably be my "RWED Mom". I have a "Mom" wherever I go/work/do.....

The "CUNT" word, in 2013, is not a valid excuse to dismiss otherwise valid discourse.

Truth be told?

You just look like a Cunt when you do that.

That I'm not a troll? I think I know me better than you do. I'm a gadfly. I sting everyone. Sometimes with the truth, sometimes with lies, and it doesn't particularly matter to me which side of my mouth you all think I'm talking out of.

But as for AuRaptor, no. Aside from jokes, AuRaptor pretty clearly believes what he's saying, because if he didn't, his sources wouldn't be so important to him and he wouldn't defend those sources so unquestionably. No one is ever one hundred percent logically consistent, but AuRaptor is always in line with his sources. To be a troll he would have to be faking what he says around here a good majority of the time - and ask yourself if you think he could really trick all of you over the long term so thoroughly.

Actually, no. You apparently don't read what I write, and maybe never have? I have no interest in being devious or faking anything, that should have come across pretty clear in the years I've been here. I've always been clear that I enjoy discussion, I enjoy debate, and THAT'S why I'm here. I put up things which I find interesting, or worthy of bringing to others' attention, and see where they go. I'm SNIDE, certainly, but never deliberately dishonest. Weird you've never gotten that and you, as well as no doubt our righties, think I come here to do as Rap does and trigger people's anger.

When I post the wild, insane stuff I see coming from the right, it's by way of saying "Wow! This is INSANE!", because to me it IS and I think if everyone were aware of this shit, maybe we could make a dent in it. That the righties here go after me and hate me is a byproduct, I'm not posting to THEM. So I have no reason or desire to "fake" it to get people pissed off.

I haven't read the rest of the responses since yours, I've been "playing" in Animation Shop with emoticons for a couple of hours enjoying myself (the results will pop up here in future), and now it's time I got off the computer and dived back into the real world again. I'll read the rest of this thread when I get return--what you wrote just struck me and I wanted to address it.

Byte, I'm with Niki - that's what Rap is here for. Do you think he BELIEVES this stuff he posts - despite all facts and logic that get presented to him to the contrary? Despite the fact that he repeatedly has to bail on discussing HIS OWN THREADS, sometimes quietly slinking away, and sometimes after declaring I WIN! - and then flouncing off in a snit? When have you EVER - and I do mean EVER - seen him discuss even one of his own topics to a logical end?

Nope, he's not here to discuss.

He's not even here to express himself honestly.

Try what I did: simply copy/ paste a series of his posts as your reply in a discussion. You will see they're simply jabs - they're not about the topic, they don't contain information or logic, they don't even express a sincere opinion. They're aimed at the poster in a very aggressive way.

As for how a person can keep it up for so long - there is a type of person whose mind works that way, indeed it can't work any other.

I was being satirical, but then it does seem odd that people's ideas on science would change , in such a brief amount of time, for no apparent reason.

Then it dawned on me...maybe some folks, in time of trouble and oppression, really DO cling to their guns and bibles. o.O

The more they " got w/ God™ ", so to say, the more they fell in w/ the "god said it, i believe it " mind set. Hell, makes as good as sense as anything, huh ?

Also, independents slightly went astray from the 'evolution' belief as well. Not as much as GOP, but they did trend that way some.

ETA - the anger anyone feels from seeing my comments is from the reader, not from me. Other than shaking tightly held beliefs of those on the Left, my role here isn't to "troll" in the least. Yes.

You'll find that this is pretty common behaviour in people who have very strong beliefs that are challenged.

Not everyone is necessarily good at discussion or debate. It does not mean they do not believe what they're saying.

In a sense, of course he is, that's why people on the internet even bother to interact with each other in this way. In another sense, I'll give you this, because most people are actually on the internet to make themselves heard, and not listen to other people.

"Could AuRaptor be responding to people in the manner they respond to him?"

I was looking back over the posts Mal4 put up from years ago. I then went back to the threads. There were plenty of people > back then < who took his posts and his presence here at face value. They quite sincerely and diligently stuck to the topic and TRIED to discuss, never getting personal, and who maintained that stance for - quite literally - years. And he NEVER entered into discussion. Not once in all the years I've been here, which goes back to the invention of the rwe section. Nope, I don't buy this explanation. He had years of chances to enter into open discussion with people who just wanted to enter into them as well. He never did so.

"Or could he be quickly frustrated because he always is asked to answer questions he may not have the answers for?"

This very day SignyM has posted yet ANOTHER post, not looking for a logical analysis, or the support of facts or history, but for an answer to the simple question: what do you mean? This is a post anyone should be able to provide. He has yet to answer. http://www.fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?bid=18&tid=57096&p=3

You've been around long enough that you should know better, but I find it to be your MO to take the defensive side. You are always drawn to the apparent underdog, whether that's rational or not.

Anyway, looking through old threads, it's clearer and clearer to me what a master manipulator Rappy is. He/she spends a HUGE amount of time here, has for years, and is obviously very bright. He/she (hell, I'm going with "he", tho I'm pretty sure it's a she) posts obviously wrong stuff, just blatantly silly and at times even quite stupid. But he knows exactly where to draw the line so he can't be definitively proven wrong.

Rap gets off on it too. The more he gets under someone's skin, the more he pushes and the wronger and stupider his posts get. He gets the ball rolling and takes obvious glee in keeping it going, pushing the buttons continually. This is usually where he slips up, but he's got the other posters so riled they don't always catch it.

Put it together: someone wicked smart, functional, makes a lot of money, but apparently has no meaningful real life social interactions. He needs this site because he feeds on his ability to control people. Borderline personality disorder of some sort? That'd be my guess.

Point being, he is not here to discuss/debate/learn/share/etc. He is here to feed.

I know I won't convince you Byte, and really I'm not trying. I've been around long enough to have lost interest in that. I am still interested in sorting out the Rap, though. "He" is a complex person. Wicked smart, but messed up.

Burned up, sadly. :( A bit of debris swung out the other side, but that's it.

I recall hearing of a big comet with a maybe 1 in 10,000 chance of hitting Mars next year. Like really big, like our dinosaur killer. It'd be a bummer for Curiosity and the other rovers, but with all the observing eyes we have there it would be AWESOME! And maybe it'd vaporize enough of the ice and stuff in the crust to make things in the atmosphere interesting, too...

Hey, I jump at any chance for real life sci-fi LOL!

Back to this thread's topic: I am avoiding the many old threads that burrowed into God/evolution/etc. They were super interesting, but just about all of our religious zealot friends have left. They really could not handle the application of cold hard logic to their religious beliefs. The questions involved triggered too much emotion for them.

The line in Dune should have been: Belief is a mind-killer.

No, not even a little. You aren't the "she" I'm thinking of. The Rap manages to keep his "self" out of things. He is completely focused on the one he's playing and adjusts himself to get what he wants. That's why he's so good at it. You, on the other hand, tend to misread things, imho, because everything you see is colored by your own emotional reaction. That makes it very hard for you to manipulate people. Sorry, hon. I just don't see it in you.

Now, if I'm way off about you it could very well be projection on my part, because what I'm describing is how I was for a lot of my life. It's why I can never get really mad at you or dislike you.

Look, I'm just saying. There's a sort of philosophical rule of thumb out there called Hanlon's Razor. It makes more sense to me than the idea of AuRaptor being a diabolical mastermind ever will.
Not a mastermind. A master manipulator. It's quite different, and not uncommon. I've known a few in life (as I'd guess you have too).

No! No no no. I might have been a truther but even I thought the controversy about the pancaking thing was dumb. Buildings pancake ALL THE TIME.

My thing was more about the question of how the jet fuel could have caused the various burn patterns and melted the steel framework of the building, but then I read a thing where people were investigating cases of arson and found that various factors can cause even a wood/paper based fire be able to deform steel. All it really needs is the heat, it doesn't need to melt entirely to lose the structural integrity.

I still think our government and the response at the time was incompetent and they bear some blame and responsibility, but I no longer think it was a false flag attack to drum up war in the Middle East. This time.

Yup, Kiki and Mal4 have nailed it very well. It took me a LONG time after coming here to recognize how I was being played, and obviously I still fall for it time and time again because Rap is here SO much and never resists the impulse to threadjack/troll virtually every damned time, and it's extremely hard for me to let bullshit like he writes lie there unaddressed. Even tho' I'm now well aware of what he's doing, not at least setting the record straight is almost impossible for me.

Byte, you are no troll, not even close. You're a real human being, and there's no way anyone could mistake you for Rap or even imagine any connection. Nobody's THAT good. And you're far more intelligent than Rap ever could be, nobody's that good at disguising it over such a length of time, either.

I wouldn't call Rap a "master" anything...it's the weakness in others that we can't manage to ignore him which keeps him going, it takes very little effort or thought to just pop out absurd statements guaranteed to shock people into responses, anyone COULD do it, if they wanted to. It's just few want to, and those who do generally get so nasty people give up on them. Rap keeps it just nasty enough, just denigrating enough, that yeah, he's good at it.

Mostly, tho', if we all were just able to stand back from his manipulations, I can almost imagine what interesting discussions we COULD have...also if only there were a few intelligent, civil right wingers here, it would be downright heaven for someone who enjoys discussion/debate. Otherwise, I'll just keep on trying to remember...

To be fair, the research breaks down beliefs around evolution for a number of sectors of the population.

"six-in-ten Americans (60%) say that “humans and other living things have evolved over time,” while a third (33%) reject the idea of evolution, saying that “humans and other living things have existed in their present form since the beginning of time.”"

"roughly a quarter of adults (24%) say that “a supreme being guided the evolution of living things for the purpose of creating humans and other life in the form it exists today.”"

"In 2009, 54% of Republicans and 64% of Democrats said humans have evolved over time, a difference of 10 percentage points. Today, 43% of Republicans and 67% of Democrats say humans have evolved, a 24-point gap."

Which goes to show how stupidity is winning the information war amongst the republicans and how its gotten hold of a hell of a percentage of your population.

I mean, honestly WTF? Do people query the theory of gravity? Of physics?

Like Mal, I've been surfing back over the past threads. Found a very sweet one on evolution where people very nicely debated this issue, including discussing young earth possibilities. It just about blew my mind.

A 2009 poll showed that almost a quarter of Australians believe "the biblical account of human origins" over the Darwinian account. 42 percent of Australians believe in a "wholly scientific" explanation for the origins of life, while 32 percent believe in an evolutionary process "guided by God".

A 2010 survey conducted by Auspoll and the Australian Academy of Science found that 79% of Australians believe in evolution (71% believe it is currently occurring, 8% believe in evolution but do not think it is currently occurring), 11% were not sure and 10% stated they do not believe in evolution. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Level_of_support_for_evolution#Australia

I have no problem with people believing there's some kind of "god" behind it all, it's only the complete dismissal of the concept that things evolve that blows my mind.

Quote:

Has the Republican big tent evolved into a house of worship?

For several years, the two major parties have been moving gradually toward opposite poles: Democrats growing more liberal and secular, Republicans becoming more conservative and religious. But a survey out this week shows just how far and how fast the GOP has gone toward becoming a collection of older, white, evangelical Christians defined as much by religion as by politics.

The nonpartisan Pew Research Center recently released the results of an extensive poll done in 2013 on Americans’ views of evolution. Like other polls, it shows that overall views are stable: Sixty percent believe that humans have evolved over time, the same as said so in 2009.

But within those results, there was a huge shift in the beliefs of Republicans: 48 percent say that humans have existed in our present form from the beginning, compared with 43 percent who say we have evolved, either with or without help from a supreme being. That’s an 11-percentage-point swing from just four years ago, when 54 percent believed in evolution.

Forget climate-change skepticism: Republicans have turned, suddenly and sharply, against Darwin.

How to explain this most unexpected mutation? Given the stability of views on evolution (Gallup polling has found responses essentially the same over the past quarter-century), it’s unlikely that large numbers of Republicans actually changed their beliefs. More likely is that the type of people willing to identify themselves as Republicans increasingly tend to be a narrow group of conservatives who believe in a literal interpretation of the Bible — or partisans who regard evolution as a political question rather than one of science.

The Pew poll also found that the share of Republicans who attend worship services weekly or more is 52 percent, up five points from 2009, and that the proportion who self-identify as conservative is 71 percent, up six percentage points from 2009. The party remains overwhelmingly white, at 86 percent, and the number of those ages 50 to 64 and 65 and older climbed seven points and two points, respectively.

Not all of these changes are statistically significant, but they are consistent with other findings. For example, an analysis of exit polls from the early Republican primaries in 2012 by Ralph Reed’s Faith and Freedom Coalition found that more than 50 percent of participants were evangelical Christians, a record high, up from 44 percent in 2008.

Republicans are by far the more ideologically homogenous of the two parties (seven in 10 are conservative vs. fewer than four in 10 Democrats who are liberal). Because Republicans were already about as religious as they could get, most of the growing gap in recent years has come from Democrats becoming more secular: The share of Democrats who say they never doubt the existence of God has dropped 11?percentage points over the past quarter-century, to 77 percent, while the proportion of Republicans who have no doubt is 92 percent vs. 91 percent 25 years earlier.

That’s what makes the evolution survey extraordinary: The Republican Party is achieving the seemingly impossible feat of becoming even more theological. Democrats and independents haven’t moved much in their views, while Republicans took a sharp turn toward fundamentalism. “The increasing gap isn’t surprising,” says Alan Cooperman, my former Post colleague who is now director of religion research at Pew. “What’s surprising is it’s the Republicans shifting, not the Democrats.”

As a matter of political Darwinism, the Republicans’ mutation is not likely to help the GOP’s survival. As the country overall becomes more racially diverse and more secular, Republicans are resolutely white and increasingly devout. If current trends persist, it will be only a couple of decades before they join the dodo and the saber-toothed tiger.

But give Republicans credit for this: They don’t just doubt the theory of evolution; they’re out to prove it wrong. If they believed in the survival of the fittest, they’d be expanding their racial and ideological diversity. Instead, they’re trying to demonstrate that devotion to God can trump the Darwinian rules of politics.

Keep them in your prayers. http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/dana-milbank-the-gops-darwinism

For those who shun music video posts as I do, here's the thing: imagine you believe in the biblical god, that the One Being made you and the world has structure and order the way the Book says, and you know your place in it and what you're supposed to do and where you're going in the end.

Now imagine some schmoe Charlie Darwin finds a skull or two and all of that is taken away, pulled out from under your feet. It's like a flood has been released that destroys everything you ever *knew*. It leaves you adrift in a strange, dark, frightening world with no order and not an inch of solid land to set your foot on.

How would you feel? Really?

Who could heed the words of Charlie Darwin
Fighting for a system built to fail
Spooning water from a broken vessel
As far as I can see there is no land

Oh my God
The water's all around us
Oh my God
It's all around

Who could heed the words of Charlie Darwin
Lords of war just profit from decay
Trade the children's promise for the jingle
The way we trade our hard earned time for pay

Oh my god
The water's cold and shapeless
Oh my God
It's all around
Oh my God
Life is cold and formless
Oh my God
It's all around

This is why they can't believe in evolution.
