Emphasizing his role as a job creator, Gov. Scott Walker praised Christopher Barber's moxie during the governor's annual "state of the state" speech.

Barber, 32, left the ranks of the unemployed to land a seasonal job as welder at Ariens Co. in Brillion in late 2012, eventually turning that into a full-time post, according to a press release from Walker's office. Newspapers around the state ran a photo of Barber giving a big wave to the crowd as he exited the Assembly podium to a round of applause during Walker's televised address.

"These are the faces of an improving economy in our state," Walker said Wednesday of Barber and others. "Wisconsin is going back to work."

But there is a reason that Barber -- a resident of Two Rivers -- has had trouble finding steady work in the past.

Records show that he is a registered sex offender with two felonies and three drunken-driving offenses. Because of his checkered past, Barber has been in and out of jail and prison for much of the past decade, with his probation having been revoked at least twice.

Well, once a registered sex offender, always a registered sex offender, it seems.

Are you suggesting that should be done away with?

Should he be allowed to keep driving even with three DUI convictions?

Do you view Bill Ayers as a criminal?

Gov. Scott Walker said Thursday he was frustrated that a registered sex offender and felon was allowed to stand alongside him during his State of the State speech.

"Obviously, it's frustrating," Walker said when asked about the situation after a speech to the Wisconsin Grocers Association.

Walker said he had assumed that the man's employer, Ariens Co. in Brillion, had done a background check when it actually had not. Ariens spokeswoman Ann Stilp issued a statement saying the company recommended Barber for the speech as an example of an employee who had been unemployed before coming to Ariens.

Stilp said Ariens is now reviewing its hiring process.

"There were thousands of other examples we could have used and that would have been preferred," he said of Barber. http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/local/govt-and-politics/scott-walker-

After a substantial time with no more offenses, yes.

I'd ask professionals in the field how long a period of good behavior would be appropriate, both for sex offenses and DUI.

Well, when it comes to rape and sexual assault, I'm probably not going to give you a lot of second chances on that one. I know conservatives don't really believe in "legitimate rape", and I can see you number yourself among them in that regard. Sexual assault? Hell, that's probably not even a real crime!

Hell, even Walker himself is admitting that it was a mistake. Funny how your knee-jerk conservatism won't even allow you to make that admission.

How many convicted pedophiles would you be comfortable putting into positions as kindergarten teachers?

How many DUI convictions does someone need before you refuse them the privilege of driving? Your suggestion is to put him right back behind the wheel and see how it goes; I'm a bit more cautious, given his past behavior.

I think there needs to be a revision of the definition of "sex offender" or whatever. There are people who get marked for life with that classification who don't deserve it. But from what I've read, REAL, hard-core sex offenders can't be "rehabilitated", and the idea of leaving society open to them by believing they're "not" sex offenders anymore because they haven't been caught in X amount of time is horrifying to me.

Most over sentenced crime in the US, I'm guessing. " SEX OFFENDER ". Hell, 3/4 the males in the country would fall into that category, for having relations with an underage girl.

Now, 3 DUI convictions, that's a bit much. He certainly doesn't deserve to have any job which puts him behind a wheel, but after a time, I don't mind if he drives to and from work. Beyond that, he probably shouldn't be allowed on the road.

As for Bill Ayers, he absolutely is a criminal, and avoided being convicted because the FBI screwed up the investigation.

Ayers participated in the bombings of New York City Police Department headquarters in 1970, the United States Capitol building in 1971, and the Pentagon in 1972, as he noted in his 2001 book, Fugitive Days.

How do you let someone with 2 or 3 DUI convictions "prove" that they're not going to drive drunk again?

It's been suggested by some here that after a "substantial" amount of time without further instances of DUI, they should be allowed to drive.

So not letting someone drive clears them for driving? Do you let them drive and then see if they drink and drive again, or do you keep them off the road and then let them try again?

The logic seems to escape me on that one. If you let them drive again now, in hopes they won't screw up again (even with a documented history or repeated screw-ups), you really can't make the case that you're "tough on crime" or that you don't think people will change. If you believe in second chances, would you make the same case for your daughter's rapist, or an accused terrorist, or a woman who has an abortion?

Or do you think sexual assault and drunk driving just aren't really crimes?

In the eyes of the law, then, he is not a criminal.

Think about this. You're defending a guy who WAS convicted, many times, and condemning one who wasn't, ever. And you're doing it on purely partisan grounds.

How do you feel about Roman Polanski? Is he just like 3/4 of American males? Should he ever have been charged with anything?

I've defended nothing as of yet. I don't know the specifics of this man's "sex offender " crime. Was it aggravated assault ? Or was it sex with a willing ( though technically non consensual ) partner ? IMO, that makes a big difference. The LAW may not see it that way, but I do.

Polanski ( 43 at the time ) had sex ( rape?) with a 13 year old girl, after furnishing her with controlled substances.

You'd honestly equate that with a 15 year old girl getting hot and heavy w/ her 17 year old b/f , in the back seat of a car ? I'd say many more men have had sexual activity with a girl a year or two younger than them, ( though technically below the age of consent ) than 43 year old men have had with 13 year old girls , after getting them stoned and or drunk.

As for Ayers, he made bombs and set them off in govt buildings. He's a criminal.

I'd think it'd be the "knee-jerk conservative" who'd want to punish someone for the rest of their life for any crime.

Who mentioned pedophiles? Any evidence the guy in this story was a pedophile, or you just making more stuff up?

Now where did I say "Put him right back behind the wheel?

In most places, after you've lost your license for DUI, you have to prove to a judge that you've gone through a treatment program of some sort. Often, you'll get a restricted license that only allows you to drive to certain places or at certain times. Many jurisdictions now require a breathalyzer interlock, so you can't start your car if you have been drinking.

Chris Rickert: No need for Scott Walker to be embarrassed about second chances

Christopher Barber probably isn’t the kind of guy most people would invite to Christmas dinner.

A registered sex offender, the 32-year-old has got a rap sheet going back to 1999 that includes a 2005 felony conviction for third-degree sexual assault involving a then-15-year-old girl.

Sounds like he was in his early 20's, and the victim was 15. Because he was more than a 2-4 years older ( I think this may vary from state to state ) it's by statute a crime.

Quote:

3RD DEGREE SEXUAL ASSAULT:

Alleged victim is 14 or 15 and the defendant is 4 or more years older than the alleged victim.
