The otherworldly, icy nightmare that paralyzed Atlanta is slipping into the rear view mirror. Abandoned cars still litter the road, but not for long.

Georgia will help motorists retrieve abandoned cars Thursday morning by ferrying them in four-wheel-drive vehicles to spots where they left them standing.

They will also receive up to five gallons of gas, emergency management spokesman Ken Davis said.

And a jump start, if their batteries are dead.

Numerous teams comprising 75 officers will be there to help.

The state sent out officials to count the number of abandoned vehicles in and around Atlanta.

There were 2,029 left to remove early Thursday, Davis said.

Throughout the South, tow trucks have been swarming over the ice, and they still have work to do.

A-Tow, which runs more than 40 trucks in metro Atlanta, reeled in 200 abandoned and wrecked vehicles from the storm Wednesday. It said 120 of the shlepps were requested by state transportation officials.

In Alabama's hardest hit county, hundreds of vehicles still stand silent and abandoned on country roads. The streets were still impassable and closed Wednesday in Shelby County, just south of Birmingham, the Sheriff's Department said.

Only emergency vehicles were allowed on them.

In North Carolina, at least 600 motorists called police to say they had crashed their vehicles or abandoned them. http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/30/us/winter-weather/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

They're getting our "Winter". It was 55 degrees here at 10:00 p.m. last night, and 61 as I was driving into the City at dawn yesterday to run the dogs! We actually got what you might call some "rain" in the wee hours of the morning, but it was a pretty pathetic drizzling, and no more in the forecast. Happy for the wildlife and landscape to get that much; the hills, which should be verdant green for the few brief months we get green every year, are stark brown.

The weather folks missed this, and as a result, the state and local officials thought they could half ass their way through a "routine" Winter Storm Watch.

Only, it quickly became a Warning , when the NWS issued it at like 3:30 AM. Word didn't get around , until it was too late. Unlike prior storms, this one hit right at lunch hour, when kids were all in schools and most were all at work. When EVERYONE tried to get home, at the same time, it was chaos.

And it still is. It was 9 degrees here last night, keeping much of what hasn't evaporated away yet as a solid sheet of ice on the roads.

The snow wasn't the problem. It was the ice. The snow was actually dry and powdery ( which sucks for playing in ) The snow would briefly melt, then freeze over again, forming an ice base, which was then covered over by more snow. As cars ( every road was jammed ) would move on the road, it'd break the ice some, melt it a bit, which only allowed it to refreeze more. Temps were in the mid 20's. So, 1-2" , to answer your question, though I think other parts may have received more. What made this event different is that the ( mountains ), in the northern part of the state, were missed entirely. The heavier snow was further south.

The big problem was so much traffic. It was easier to drive around in the '11 storm, which was a REAL snow / ice event, because everyone was off the roads. All ya had to do was stay in the tire ruts from the 4x4's that had made a path, and you could get around fairly decent.

That's generally the problem around Atlanta. If it was just snow, wouldn't be so bad.

I remember one back in the early eighties that was so slick that not only couldn't you drive, you couldn't even walk. I lived about 1/4 mile from my work, and it took me two hours to get home on foot. This was after I looked at the folks trying and failing to get up a 2 degree slope out of the parking lot, and decided to leave my car.

There was another one that started as rain and then froze, and the parking lot got so slick the parked cars slowly slid down a slight slope and ended up neatly piled against the curb.

Yeah, ice can do that.

I remember coming to a breathtaking stop.... BEFORE the stop sign, mind you!... and from a dead stop having the car slide sideways off the (very flat) crown of the road, smack into the curb with both wheels. By the next day, about 30% of the cars that I saw on the road had minor dings in them. The body shops did great business!

So, ice storms are good for business. At least some businesses, anyway.

Kitty litter works even better than salt and rug pieces.

It wasn't the clumpy sort of snow many may be accustomed to. There was a solid sheet of ice 1/2 " or more, on many of the roads. Add to that mix bumper to bumper traffic, EVERYWHERE, and school buses clogging the roads as well, few of which were even prepped with any salt or sand , and it was just chaos.

The standard operating procedure is for the weather guys to scream and pull their hair out, build up the event like it really IS the Day After Tomorrow, the schools to close early, and everyone stay home, after their obligatory trip to empty out the grocery stores ,for what at most will be a 2 day event.

But that's not what happened. The storm came hours before we were told, slid further north than expected, and just hit at the worst time possible. Right at the lunch rush hour.

I've been catching up on some t.v. I'd been neglecting, and getting caught up on Agents of Shield, among others.

As a winter 'event', this doesn't really rank near the top, in terms of snow fall, power outages, etc.., but it still was a royal pain in the ass. Took me 3 hours to drive 10 or so miles, and I was lucky! Some poor souls endured 24 hours being stuck in their cars! And there was 1 baby delivered , in the bumper to bumper traffic ! But thankfully, no fatalities. ( at least none reported as of yet ). I nearly pulled over into a parking lot and hoofed it home, but stuck w/ it. Glad I did, too.

The major problem was all the kids were in school and they decided to close around noon. That meant parents had to scramble to leave work to pick up their kids. Businesses then decided to close. Instead of having the school traffic clear before the main rush hour, it all hit at once. Once the roads became gridlocked, as Rap said, the slow moving traffic ground the snow into ice and with all lanes clogged, the salt and sand trucks were helpless. Game over. I heard the head of Georgia's DOT saying that at 12:15 all the interstates in the Atlanta area were coded green and by 12:36 that had changed to red.

How many of the kids that were stuck at school had their meals thrown in the trash because they didn't have money?

Teachers keeping kids in schools overnight - frivolous! This is why we need to slash teachers' pay! Also, we need to make sure to slash city budgets so this kind of thing can't happen again.

Our district has a policy to never release students unexpectedly early, and that's a big part of the reason (also included - those who's parent's can't get away being left to their own devices). The only exception they've stipulated to is any chemical/refinery disaster, which might make it unsafe to remain in the area.

They used to call such events "acts of God", but clearly, Jesus' daddy would never do such a thing to the fundamentalist Christian, loyalist Republican and good conservative citizens of the state of Georgia. So it must have been an act of imperialist Presidential tyranny. And you will note that Obama didn't get Congress' approval before he did it, even tho' he alibi'd out by appearing on TV in the company of The Good Congressmen, the Republican ones, at the same time. Just when you thought it was safe to go back outside...

Atlanta braces for another winter wallop

ATLANTA -- When snow fell on Atlanta two weeks ago, downtown streets of the South's business hub were jammed with unmoving cars, highway motorists slept overnight in vehicles or abandoned them where they sat, and students were forced to camp out in school gymnasiums when roads turned too treacherous for buses to navigate.

Things promised to be different Tuesday, when another round of rain, sleet and freezing rain was expected to begin hitting the area.

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/atlanta-braces-for-another-winter-wallop/

Snowpocalypes 2 draws nigh. This time, it's personal.

Also , from the previous storm, over in B'ham, AL. Seems someone's Christmas present was finally taken out of the box....

* ETA UPDATE!!! : After much ado on Monday, Tuesday was basically a dud. Rain / sleet started in the AM, which turned to big fluffy snow flakes.Grass, railings and cars got a fine dusting of snow. For an hour or so, it looked like we were in for a doozy. Then snow gave way to sleet, then rain , then... nothing. Wet streets all day, no ice, and clouds.

Reports have gone from DEFCON 1 to... meh. ATL might get hit, but most of the nasty stuff will stay far NORTH, this time.

We think.

It's a legit ice storm, but the hype has well out paced the reality. I say that , now, because I still have power, and it seems many are starting to lose theirs. Some 100,000 are w/ out power now.

Problem is, it wasn't just ONE storm, hon. There was a first wave, which dusted us nicely with some snow, but nothing really came of it. It turned to rain after lunch on Tuesday. And then nothing. All freaking day, it was just wet streets. It wasn't until Tues nite, Wed morning that things started to get icy. ATL freaked out on MONDAY, thinking the world would end at sunset, when in fact, the real " weather " didn't arrive until a full day and a half later.

*sigh*

BUT WHY HAS NO ONE POSTED "A WINTER IS COMING" PICTURE YET.

THIS THREAD REMAINS INCOMPLETE AND IT IS AFFECTING MY SANITY.

EDIT: Further consideration has allowed that "The Ice Storm Cometh" may be a sufficient pop-culture reference to avoid further audit. But I'm watching you!

Another blanket of actual SNOW last night here. And Raleigh had it's own Snowpocalypse, when the area interstates were completely jammed w/ commuters caught trying to go home. All at the same time.

Just 2 weeks after we saw all this in Atlanta.

Could be worse. General Sherman's troops could be ravaging the city.

Keep the Shiny side up

Here in the DMV we got a pretty good snow as well. Measures 7+ inches at my house, and another dose of 'only' 2 to 3 inches this evening. Virginia DOT has already spent their snow removal budget, and is dipping into general funds now to keep the roads clear.

Have to admit they're doing better now than in years previous. Used to be that they wouldn't get down to our cul de sac (Hey. I don't live on a dead end street. It's a cul de sac) for two or three days after a storm, by which time the folks living here had already dug the road out.

Now, we've already had plow trucks make two passes this morning.

At least 12 inches so far just outside NYC, with hours and hours more to go, including a change to sleet and rain. It's pretty awesome.

I don't exactly *heart* climate change/global warming, since extreme weather events like this and like Jan 28 and Sandy and the CA drought etc... are becoming more common, exactly as CC/GW predicts. I love a good storm, so I'm not complaining. I'm having fun today, and even found the chaos of Sandy and Irene somewhat invigorating.

But I'm guessing that the thousands without power or those stuck in their cars for days or those who lost houses or livelihoods or their lives in these weather events wouldn't agree with me, or with you two buffoons.

Carry on.

But they aren't. That's the kicker. The US went through a massive lull in hurricanes to make landfall after '05. "Events like Sandy "? You serious, Clark ? Sandy was Sandy. 1 is not a pattern or increase of 'extreme 'anything. It was a storm. And only a Cat 2 storm at that.

And Irene ? Irene ... was the first hurricane to have made landfall in New Jersey since 1903 !

It may be another 100 years before that part of the US coastline sees another hurricane.

So, the name calling because we recognize the weather for what it is, and don't buy into the hysteria ?
