:(

One of the greatest actors of his generation. So sad to lose him this early, this way.

America loves a winner!

Saw a loop on CNN of them showing images of him. It took me awhile to clue in, as the sound was down. I first thought it was some fluff story on him as a great actor, maybe promoting some upcoming movie. Then after a few minutes, I realized... this is all they're showing, over and over. Did something happen?

Really too early for him to leave us.

Dammit.

3 young kids too... geeze. WTH was he thinking ?

5 empty envelopes of heroin in the trash ? Knowing nothing of how that stuff is dived up, that sounds like a lot. Was he trying to off himself ? Did he just get whacked out and stupid ? Or was he suicided ?

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Wow, that sucks.

I've never seen him in his "big" roles, only in his small ones (Twister, a history show on Valley Forge and the American revolution). But in every role, he was exquisite. No matter how trite the dialogue or stale the material, he managed to make it come alive and be real. Not many actors can do that.

He had history with heroin, it seems.

Chances are, he was chasing the dragon, trying to get that best, first high back again. Thing is, heroin these days is much stronger than it was even 20 years ago, I'm told, so that dose that used to just get you edged now gets you dead. And it sounds like he might have been on a days-long binge.

Damned shame he couldn't kick that bitch of an addiction once and for all. He'd even talked about it, saying he was glad his problems with drugs had happened before he got famous and started making lots of money, because he wouldn't have been able to handle it at 20 or 23. He said he'd have been dead. I guess he forgot those lessons he'd learned all those years ago.

Was busy working this weekend, so I just now saw the terrible news on MSN site.

Such a shame, he was one of my favorite actors. He was only 44. Apparently he had a 20 year bout with addiction and recently began revisiting his demons.

My uncle died from his addiction to alcohol in his mid-50s. He too battled against his addiction for years and, sadly, lost.

Philip Seymour Hoffman, R.I.P.

I hope this will get the discussion moving again about the war on drugs. It's time to stop treating it as a criminal problem, and treating it like the health problem it really is. Addicts need help, not judgement.

50 ? I heard 5 empty in the trash, and 2 more full ones. I'm going to assume that each 'envelope' was a hit, dose, or what ever.

True that. He was one of the few who never phoned it in and gave his all, no matter the size of the part or movie. Each role was a gem. I always got the feeling there was something more he would hide, and he kept you guessing what that was.

Brilliant!

Philip Seymour Hoffman's will guides son away from Hollywood
http://www.cnn.com/2014/02/19/showbiz/philip-seymour-hoffman-will/

Philip Seymour Hoffman's last wish for his son was that he
grow up in New York, Chicago or San Francisco, according
to the late actor's will.

Hoffman, who died of a heroin overdose earlier this month,
left his entire estate to "friend and companion" Mimi O'Don-
nell, who is the mother of his three children, according
to the document released by the Manhattan Surrogate's
Court Wednesday.

It was signed by Hoffman in October 2004, when his son,
Cooper, now 10, was just a year old and before daughters
Tallulah and Willa were born. ...

I once went to a preview in Hollywood for Synecdoche, New York. It was written and directed by Charlie Kaufman, who spoke about the film afterwards. Not commercially successful, but Hoffman played the main character, and he was brilliant.

Zohydro
New pain pill's approval: 'Genuinely frightening'

http://www.cnn.com/2014/02/26/health/zohydro-approval/

One addiction expert who signed the letter was more forthright.
"It's a whopping dose of hydrocodone packed in an easy-to-crush
capsule," said Dr. Andrew Kolodny, president of the advocacy group
Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing. "It will kill people
as soon as it's released."
The letter is the latest in a series of entreaties to the FDA
related to Zohydro.

I couldn't answer that question Rap, even though people I cared about as a youth did it right under my nose.

I don't know how much comes in an envelope. I was called Papa G for how I could get people from point A to point B without getting pulled over, or talking my way out of a ticket with cops. I also would never take one of my friends to get H after a party. (I was only ever asked to make a side trip after a party that involved coke).

I miss my old friends. They're either dead or in jail or married with children. And then there's me....

In a way, it's kind of like 4 of the same thing. ;)

Ya gotta laugh so nobody catches you cryin'.....

Thanks for the update, but that horrible telling of his death doesn't mean anything. It could have happened that way, but it's equally believable that he just died young with a heart defect. Why is everone so driven to Human Suffering all the time????

The only reason I'm not paranoid about dying an "accidental" death like that anymore is that sometimes we all have to grow up. Regardless of his extra-carricular activities, he seemed like a pretty cool guy over the years.

When I talk about how I looked in 2008 when I sat on my ass 12 hours a night for good money, I used to tell people that I looked like the fat dude on Boogie Knights back then... no joke.

Who knew he was going to be John Malkovitch the IInd?

RIP Brother. In the end, no matter how the press treated ya, it must have been nice to make a boatload of cash and hardly anybody bothered following you. The PERFECT life. More money than you know what to do with, and only smart people recognized you before you died.

Yeah... I know what you mean. None of that means anything, no matter how much or how little of it you have.

I turn 35 this year. Andy Kaufman died at 35. Jesus died at 33. I figure I'm living on borrowed time.

The body of a still athletic looking 35 year old on the outside with the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys and (_______) of an 85 year old here......

The minor pains I've had from getting "old" are nothing yet....

Better make that money while you can boys and girls.

Nobody wants to get old, but we all do.

My only goal now is to make sure that nobody I care about suffers for my propensity to age, or my proclivity to all of those enjoyable things that age you. ;)
