GA Tech Student Injured In Fire
February 5, 2014 11:45 AM

Federal authorities converged on an apartment building in Midtown Atlanta after a reported fire injured a Georgia Tech student Tuesday. Late in the afternoon, fire authorities responded to an incident inside an apartment building. The male student reportedly suffered significant burn injuries, authorities say.

Multiple investigative agencies, working at the State and Federal levels, responded to the scene, taking a closer look at the situation. The name of the student has not been released. Witnesses say the apartment was badly damaged in the fire. Witnesses tell FOX 5 that the student was from Turkey , but no further information has been confirmed by authorities. Shortly after 10pm, Georgia Tech issued this statement:

“Georgia Tech is working with law enforcement to notify the victim’s family. Until that notification is made the Institute is not able to release the victim’s information. We are able to confirm a Georgia Tech graduate student was involved in an incident involving a fire in a building off of 10th street this evening. Our primary concern is to provide appropriate assistance to the victim and for his family as well as his classmates. We continue to cooperate with the investigation of incident.”

Or perhaps it was just another completely unrelated and totally isolated incident.

No dots to connect here.

April 21, 2006 — CSO —

A 21-year-old engineering student at Georgia Tech is being held at an undisclosed location on terrorism charges, Reuters reports.

Syed Haris Ahmed allegedly tried to provide support and resources for acts of international terrorism, according to an indictment described in a statement by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia, Reuters reports.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Ahmed is suspected by the FBI of attending a terrorist training camp in Pakistan last year, according to Reuters, although his family claims he traveled there to attend a religious school.

Now, go away.

Um. You noticed the different years, right? They aren't the same guy.

Sorry to hear about the fire at your university though. An Alma Mater must always be afforded some respect.

Wasn't trying to imply it was the same guy.

Same school, though. And another non-Norwegian International student, too.

And not, not MY university.

Your elaborations continue to confuse me. Why specify non-Norwegian? I mean I know you're making a point about middle eastern terrorism, but Norwegians have been terrorists as well. There was that whole shooting at a summer camp thing a few years ago.

Leaky chemical tanks are so much more effective. And you don't even get arrested for those.

Ya might feel less nonchalant about it if your kid was enrolled there.

But still, how does one screw up with an IDIOT PROOF thing like a Molotov cocktail ?

Hell of an engineer ? Maybe. Competent terrorist ? Not so much. And he spent 4 years at UT ( university of Tehran ). If he didn't master the basics there, how'd he ever earn a degree ?

It's too much to even try to blame the actual perp, huh?

Doesn't fit the narrative you wish we're true.

Ahahahaha! If your dorm room smells like alcohol and burning in college, you're doing something right! Gotta be careful about getting a piece of those molotov claptails though, one night stands are pretty dangerous!

Seriously, an engineer blowing up their own dorm room at some point or another is almost like required course work.

Geeze. Not the best week ever for the N. Avenue Trade School.

A former Georgia Tech associate professor has been found guilty of 76 counts of sexual exploitation of children.

Faiz Al-Khayyal was convicted by a jury Thursday in Fulton County Superior Court and will be sentenced at a later date.

“Possession of child pornography is a heinous crime that exploits the most vulnerable members of our society,” Attorney General Sam Olens said in a news release. “I am pleased that today Mr. Al-Khayyal has been brought to justice.”

Al-Khayyal, a native of Saudi Arabia, came under suspicion in 2009 while he was still employed by Georgia Tech and on a teaching assignment in China. Georgia Tech authorities contacted the Attorney General’s Office after child pornography was found on the computer in his office.
