Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Pretty effin' funny!

That was magnificent, thanks KPO. I don't always catch his show but, as usual, Jon distills the hypocrisy and puts it in perspective...yes, with humor, but I'm afraid I don't find it that funny. More sad and scary for my country--and for any of us those people don't consider "worthy" of our rights.

I'd have more to say on Jon Stewart's fabulousness, if only I wasn;t so stunned by some of the Fox commentary. It's just shocking....

Stewart is funny-- the Fox people aren't. I won't use the term "fascist" in regard to them, that's over done, but I will suggest that they are making pretty tyrannical statements, in a way that far exceeds anything they've ever accused Obama of. "America, love it or leave it," seems to evolved into, "MY way or the highway." if not "jail or torture anybody who disagrees with ME."

It's totally Murdoch's style. Appeal to the fear and loathing of the ignorant, and feed it. But underneath, there is an agenda. Scary stuff.

The FOX video is simply lynch mob talk, which appeals to angry old fools intent on proving that age did not make them wise :
Quote:

But for six of the last eight years, Fox News has had a median age of 65-plus and the number of viewers in the 25-54 year old group has been falling consistently, down five years in a row in prime time, from an average of 557,000 viewers five years ago to 379,000 this year. . . . Just how old is its audience? It is impossible to be precise because Nielsen stops giving an exact figure for median age once it passes 65.

It's embarrassing to me that you guys outside the U.S. get to see the worst of us here, and I hope you always bear in mind that this bullshit represents a small minority of the American voice...just a very loud and strident one (and one encouraged greatly for profit motive by FauxNews and their ilk). And unfortunately at this time in our history, one that is listened to (and, equally unfortunately, repeated) by an equally-small minority of those in power.

Nonetheless, scary times in America, but honest to gawd, it's not US!

Makes it easier to lie to themselves about "Fair & Balanced" that way, I suppose.

I had a recurring dream as a child that left an indelible mark on me. Unlike my other dreams, this one had no recognizable images, no mommies or daddies, no friends, relatives, teachers, scary monsters or scrappy Yankee shortstop Tony Kubek. This dream was simply a field of darkness and light fighting to dominate my mental screen. That was it. For what seemed like long periods of time, I would bear silent witness to a cosmic struggle between malicious, inky blackness and radiant, life-affirming light. I would, of course, be pulling for the light to win. But it never did. No matter how much I willed it, light could never maintain the field of view. Darkness would always come crawling back, invading the space and ultimately taking over. It was both exhausting and upsetting. Thankfully, at some point during early adolescence, the dream stopped, never to return. Looking back, I see it as no more than an immature mind's attempt to reconcile good and evil. I understand now that the world is not nearly that simple. Those two opposing forces do not actually exist. They are evaluations. Opinions. And yet, my mind continually tries to manifest them as being real. I catch myself doing it whenever I toggle back and forth between MSNBC and Fox News playing out their cable TV version of my childhood dream. The only difference is that I'm an adult now. I understand that Roger Ailes [president of Fox News] thinks he's on the side of the light. http://www.chucklorre.com/index.php?p=439

Thanx for keeping that in mind, Brenda, I appreciate it. I keep hoping the intelligent people on the right will do something about them, because the voters--the way things are redistricted--don't seem able to.

FREMDFIRMA

Well, given time to think on this, in a fairly inebriated state, it brings me to this particular point of contention.

The INTENT of the fuckin Constitution is by "The People" and for "The People", right ?

And so, given their absolute and unerring *contempt* for "The People" and their ability to make decisions...

So called Libertarians, and especially Conservatives, have no goddamn right whatsoever to reference, much less pretend the defense of, the US Constitution.
Because the core article it is based on is anathema to them, and they have outright admitted it, which makes the glaring hypocrisy of their position undeniable.

Think about it, they seem to think "The People" are a mass of selfish, opportunistic, stupid, vicious "freeloaders" who cannot be trusted to govern themselves, and they're quite vocal about it.

So why then, would they reference the US Constitution save as a deceptive ploy to get their way, given their lack of respect for it, and why should we allow them to screech and scream about it's amendments when they clearly, and by their own admission, prefer a system of Government far more authoritarian than it allows ?

Why allow them to argue minor points of a document and practice that the primary point thereof that they believe should be discarded ?

Which also brings into question that if they can't stand the thought of "The People" in charge, then who do they think should be ?
And I daresay, some very UN-original and entirely predictable answers occur in response to that simple question, further revealing them as the temper tantrum throwing toddlers they really are in thought, emotion, and sensibility.

Just so ya know, this is what had always made it impossible for me to even take them seriously, save for their ability to do damage to anything worthwhile in this world.

Unfortunately, Frem makes a valid point (unfortunate because it's painful to accept it's more than a little true). I guess it shouldn't be..."politics" isn't about the Constitution, it's about power, so they're all guilty to some degree.

Indeed they are.
But when the parties in question try to retreat behind "Constitutional Rights", they should be immediately called out on this, as they've no respect for the document itself.

Nor should their laughable attempts to call anything "UnConstitutional" as a reason to attack it be regarded with anything but mockery or scorn.

That would be like an Anarchist making demands on the Rule of Law or Divine Right of Kings*, it's a complete hypocrisy and should be outed as such on the spot.

-Frem

*Which they sometimes do, in a trolling fashion to point out how flawed they are, sure.

I sometimes argue the rule of law, which any anarchist has to be familiar enough with to keep their nose clean or else they invite arrest.

Sometimes certain rules and laws can even be agreed on unanimously by the public, such as condemnation of certain serious crimes. I can respect the tenants of a social contract that encourages people to not act like reavers towards each other. Civilization, science, technology and progress couldn't exist otherwise.

But I have no real loyalty to those laws, no trust in the judicial system, and no esteem for the threatened punishments.
