I think you're as addicted to him as he is addicted to being a troll. I really wish you'd stop, because you are just about the only one left who feeds him on a regular basis.

Sig, my dear: You NEEDED that clarification? How long ago did he make it clear that for him, this isn't "discussion" or "debate", but his version of "free-flowing conversations"? Remember "I do speak off the cuff, mostly, as I view these forums as more as free flowing conversations..."

I can't remember many posts he ever put up that weren't propaganda or trolling, certainly I could count on one hand any on the subject of POLITICS that weren't one or the other.

So why any need for clarification?

ETA: Oops, see I was thinking the same thing as Mal4... ;o)

Yeah, he's my guilty pleasure. I have to learn to stop coaxing him out and then poking him with a stick. It's so not nice of me!

SO, AFA "What do the jobless do..." it was a kind of pointless article. There is a Argentinian guy who blogs about what to do in an economic crisis. (Farfel I think his name is.) Anyway, somebody had asked him how to respond to a certain lack, and he said Eventually you learn to do without.

What is needed is for people to feel the unfairness of the system and push for change. But for the most part they believe that their misfortune is all their fault, and so they learn to scrape by, do without, shift their morals... whatever it takes. Also, they drink or take drugs or eat junk food to relieve the stress. Will this 65-year high in jobless/ benefit-less people result in real systemic change? I doubt it. What Americans should be demanding is jobs, not handouts. But hardly anybody thinks like that. Most people are passive and don't want to challenge TPTB.

BTW- NIKI- You've avoided several repeated questions rather pointedly (for example: Where do we disagree on our views of the USA). Its' a discussion I would dearly love to have with you, as I feel I could learn a lot. My offer of a fair and rigorous discussion is open to you, too, should you want to take advantage of it.

Yeah, I had aspirations of working in Hollywood once, but it's not for me... it's so Right Wing there... Dirty Harry, Rambo, Red Dawn, Predator, Dark Knight, Man Of Steel...it's like a sea of NeoCon propaganda being continuously pumped out of LA. John Carpenter was the only cool dude there, and he's retired now. *sigh* Now I make & sell models to pay bills during lean times so I don't have to live off the taxpaying public like corporations and politicians do. I never personally collected unemployment. Benefits are largely a Right Wing wealth safety net I want no part of (see the clever way I'm sort of keeping this on-topic?).

Here's an Airwolf model I just finished after heavy modification from the not-so-good kit:

Yeah, I know, a fascist Righty show, but the helicopter was cool!

Moebius has a fantastic new kit out just now, you can buy one & make it yourself! But I'm always available to do it for you at a reasonable price if you don't have the model-making skills. Even then, it might be cheaper to buy a kit where you live down under & have a local model dude do it there- shipping is SO expensive...

Sig, so you don't think I'm ignoring you: I haven't deliberately avoided any questions, certainly not from you. If I missed something, please point out where and I'll go back and look. If you don't get a response to something, you can always pm me. I'm not here a lot right now, this place is kinda getting to me again...every time I go into a thread, when I go to hit "reply", my finger pauses and I think "why bother?"--and more often than not lately, I just go away. So I may have missed something, but again, as with that other question you accused me of "avoiding", either I hadn't gone back to the thread in question, or I didn't take note of your question because the thread was getting "that way" and I ended up just skimming over the responses.

This would have been a "why bother?" post for me, except insofar as to say I got a giggle out of Chris' model and the posts about it, and I guess actually it says how I'm feeling...just as sockpuppets don't "compute" for me, the endless trolling and idiocy of this forum, is "computing" less and less as well. Dealing with other stuff IRL, getting little enjoyment here, so I'm not around much, just put up stuff and come back once or twice to see what happens mostly.

ETA: Chris, I got a smile out of your "over the top"...I assume you were joking. I've yet to see you EVER do anything "over the top" here, you're way too nice for this place.

From what you write, I get the impression you have a more negative view of this country than I do. I don't have really high expectations for any form of government, but feel ours is better than most, and I guess I just live in hope that the pendulum will keep swinging both ways, never too far in either direction, and we will continue to move forward in fits and starts. There are many, MANY things I don't like about our government, many I do like, many I think can be improved, but all in all, I'd still rather live here than just about anywhere else.

And you? I may have gotten a wrong impression; either way, I'd be interested in hearing it straight up, rather than extrapolating from what I read.

Obamacare - 3.3 Million signed up and counting (what a failure! and this without any help from T and NeoCons repubs)

Unemployment 6.6%

Rich folk making money hand over fist (The stock market has more than doubled since 2009)

Funny thing; repubs are willing to go back to the old days and have insurance companies turn away anyone with pre-existing conditions, charge more to women and refuse the elderly. Yeah, that works.

Unlike popular belief, it's not government controlled. It's the law, for one. But not controlled by the government. Of course, that doesn't matter to the Troll Patrol because they follow the marching orders of one Rush Limpdick. So the lesson ends here.

Oh, I think both of our major parties have been so deeply captured by money that it makes not a whit of difference whether we have the right to vote or not.

One thesis I just ran across what the idea that the triumph of the moneyed class was being able to separate the ideas of political rights (liberal democracy) from economic rights. By separating those ideas, it was possible to give "the masses" a shiny trinket to play with, meanwhile amassing economic dominance for themselves.

I'm not too sure about the historic accuracy of that argument, but I'd have to say that even as we the people seem to be gaining more and political rights (on average, with some regression here and there) the division of wealth has never been greater. So there seems to be some truth to the idea that political rights do not automatically translate to economic rights; the two seem to be in separate silos.

As far as where I'd rather live, I think there are a lot of places that might be better- the Nordic nations, and some European ones. I have a colleague who retired to Costa Rica; he and his wife love it there. Every year, he sends us pictures of his trips across the Costa Rican countryside, and across the world.

But at our age, and with a disabled daughter, its very difficult becoming a citizen anywhere- nobody wants to let us in. Even my friends in Costa Rica have to leave the country for two weeks every six months because they've been living there on a tourist visa for almost ten years! So I guess I'm stuck with the USA, and the USA is stuck with me.

Anyway, NIKI, this is a deep topic which maybe deserves its own thread. Worth starting one? That way, we don't have to keep clicking to 'page 2'.

Specifically, I'd like to know which aspects of the USA you think are worth keeping, which ones you'd like to change, and how far is "too far" in terms of change in the USA.

Sure, Sig, start a thread, might be interesting. Dunno how involved I'll be, as I said, I've been coming here less and less lately, and this is a complex topic. But it would definitely be interesting to have SOMETHING to discuss, rather than everything devolving into the usual bullshit.

Let's see what I can respond to. "Oh, I think both of our major parties have been so deeply captured by money that it makes not a whit of difference whether we have the right to vote or not." Well, I definitely don't believe that, as I see it as about the only control, little tho' it is, that we still DO have. I guess the only thing I can say is that the states are different--in some cases VERY different--and that says something about the voting public, to me. Certainly I agree that both our major parties have been deeply captured by money--but then I think it was ALWAYS that way, in every government. I think ALL forms of government are "deeply captured by money", ours less than some, more than others. That's I guess a good example of what I meant by us seeing things differently, I feel your views are quite a bit more extreme than mine.

As to political/economic rights, there's certainly validity to what you wrote. But again, I think that's always been the case, it's nothing new, and I don't think "political rights" by the civilian population has every "translated" to economic rights...I suppose I would substitute the term "SOME economic POWER", if anything. I never thought governments were particularly responsive to what "the people" wanted unless it was convenient for them, they were forced to, or in the case of the few actual "representatives" who take their responsibilities seriously. And yes, there are those...few tho' they may be, little tho' their power may be, they're there and they actually try to work for their constituents.

I guess the crux of it is that it FEELS as if it's not as black and white for me as it is for you, and maybe that I have less expectation of any government ever actually representing its people and working for their best interests, generally speaking. I feel like I live always in the greys, and you chafe more for something I don't believe ever existed, or ever will. That's pretty much what I mean by our differences.
