AURAPTOR

America loves a winner!

A US economics professor has published the letter he wrote to his daughter's schoolteacher explaining why he doesn't want his girl indoctrinated in the green religion. Steven Landsburg, a professor at Rochester, NY, included it as part of a longer essay in which he calls environmentalism a "coercive ideology" targeted specifically at children.

Dear Rebecca:

When we lived in Colorado, Cayley was the only Jewish child in her class. There were also a few Moslems. Occasionally, and especially around Christmas time, the teachers forgot about this diversity and made remarks that were appropriate only for the Christian children. These remarks came rarely, and were easily counteracted at home with explanations that different people believe different things, so we chose not to say anything at first. We changed our minds when we overheard a teacher telling a group of children that if Santa didn't come to your house, it meant you were a very bad child; this was within earshot of an Islamic child who certainly was not going to get a visit from Santa. At that point, we decided to share our concerns with the teachers. They were genuinely apologetic and there were no more incidents. I have no doubt that the teachers were good and honest people who had no intent to indoctrinate, only a certain naïveté derived from a provincial upbringing.

Perhaps that same sort of honest naïveté is what underlies the problems we've had at the JCC this year. Just as Cayley's teachers in Colorado were honestly oblivious to the fact that there is diversity in religion, it may be that her teachers at the JCC have been honestly oblivious that there is diversity in politics.
Let me then make that diversity clear. We are not environmentalists. We ardently oppose environmentalists. We consider environmentalism a form of mass hysteria akin to Islamic fundamentalism or the War on Drugs. We do not recycle. We teach our daughter not to recycle. We teach her that people who try to convince her to recycle, or who try to force her to recycle, are intruding on her rights.
The preceding paragraph is intended to serve the same purpose as announcing to Cayley's Colorado teachers that we are not Christians. Some of them had never been aware of knowing anybody who was not a Christian, but they adjusted pretty quickly.

Once the Colorado teachers understood that we and a few other families did not subscribe to the beliefs that they were propagating, they instantly apologized and stopped. Nobody asked me what exactly it was about Christianity that I disagreed with; they simply recognized that they were unlikely to change our views on the subject, and certainly had no business inculcating our child with opposite views.
I contrast this with your reaction when I confronted you at the preschool graduation. You wanted to know my specific disagreements with what you had taught my child to say. I reject your right to ask that question. The entire program of environmentalism is as foreign to us as the doctrine of Christianity. I was not about to engage in detailed theological debate with Cayley's Colorado teachers and they would not have had the audacity to ask me to. I simply asked them to lay off the subject completely, they recognized the legitimacy of the request, and the subject was closed.

I view the current situation as far more serious than what we encountered in Colorado for several reasons. First, in Colorado we were dealing with a few isolated remarks here and there, whereas at the JCC we have been dealing with a systematic attempt to inculcate a doctrine and to quite literally put words in children's mouths. Second, I do not sense on your part any acknowledgment that there may be people in the world who do not share your views.Third, I am frankly a lot more worried about my daughter's becoming an environmentalist than about her becoming a Christian. Fourth, we face no current threat of having Christianity imposed on us by petty tyrants; the same can not be said of environmentalism. My county government never tried to send me a New Testament, but it did send me a recycling bin.

Although I have vowed not to get into a discussion on the issues, let me respond to the one question you seemed to think was very important in our discussion: Do I agree that with privilege comes responsibility? The answer is no. I believe that responsibilities arise when one undertakes them voluntarily. I also believe that in the absence of explicit contracts, people who lecture other people on their "responsibilities" are almost always up to no good. I tell my daughter to be wary of such people — even when they are preschool teachers who have otherwise earned a lot of love.

Sincerely,

Steven Landsburg

I read the letter, and it's written by someone just like YOU, AURaptor: an angry guy that instead of finding a middle road to truth, has been for whatever reason PUSHED to an edge, and now embraces that edge as it was some kind of rational, reasonable choice that he intentionally made on his own.
It's one thing to say "Nah, I don't recycle" and another thing entirely to vehemently rally against the evil religion of the Green...
I bet squirrels love him though, because

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

"We teach her that people who try to convince her to recycle, or who try to force her to recycle, are intruding on her rights."

Last I read, there was no 'freedom of non-recycling' rights written into the Constitution. Yanno, if you're going to be a strict Constitutionalist and all.

OONJERAH - We are too dumb to live and smart enough to wipe ourselves out.
"You, who live in any kind of comfort or convenience, do not know how these people can survive these things, do you? They will endure because there is no immediate escape from endurance. Some will die, the rest must live."

Proper set up. Nicely done.

For practical / pragmatic reasons, I'm not sure I agree w/ him on this one.

But perhaps I'm indoctrinated my own self ?

He does have a point though. The 'group think' pressure to conform on such matters as ObamaCare and recycling are pretty unforgiving to those who may choose to not participate. I had my chiropractor ask me if I'd signed up for O-Care, or visited the website.

I chuckled.

She knew enough not to say or ask anymore.

She's smart like that.

Not sure precisely what you're referring to here... what pressure to conform? I feel no such pressure of any kind.
A couple of things though, I did not sign up for Obamacare because my insurance is through my job, and in talking to dudes in the recycling field I am led to believe roughly half of what goes in the recycle bins in this country ends up in the oceans (or landfills if we're a little luckier). But I 'recycle' anyway just in case it goes to the recycle centers.

What's one have to do w/ the other? Are are opinions measured by what we do for a living ? Does a person's point of view grant favor or disdain, according to what YOU think of their line of work ?

Prolly because you're fully indoctrinated, and on board w/ the program of going green ?

Pretty clear that he points out the sorts of comments made to anyone who DOESN'T recycle. The overt message sent, RECYCLE, by the govt providing bins for everyone. Recycle! Conform! Obey!

Yeah, it's a bit of a stretch, as I said, there IS ( we think , at least ) some practical side to recycling. Or we're told there is, right ?

But as you said, so little stuff actually gets recycled, and that's after how many decades of being told we need to , and all those PSAs ?

If you're a minority religion, no one bugs you to conform. But if you choose not to recycle, hell... you might as well wear a giant " P " on your chest for POLLUTER !!

I was checking to see if I was being unduly hard on him for that letter. Judging by the letter itself he sounded like a dope, so I wanted to check out his actual work online to see if maybe that letter was an atypical example of his thinking. But in seeing what he teaches and talks about, I see I came to the proper conclusion. See he doesn't actually seem to teach real-world stuff, so it seems appropriate to me that he has a not-real world view of recycling.
Tell me you're too tired or busy to recycle. Tell me it doesn't really matter to you, or you just don't care. But don't start your own anti-religion over it. That's just a case of too much time for useless thought formation.

Yes, but he has a PhD in Economics, so he must know a lot about recycling.

I figure that since a large amount of recycling is sent to the sea anyway, his thinking is that since the system is not 100% effective, it's not effective like it is in theory, and telling us it is is a lie, so I won't have my child lied to, or some such self-important grandious BS.

There's something else at play here as well. It's the intolerance of this man that his child will be exposed to views that differ from his own (which he then labels as extreme)> Well toughen up sunshine, that's life. Kids will be constantly exposed to beliefs and values that do not reflect your own, and here's the thing about beliefs and values, people usually hold them to be the ultimate truth. No education system is going to be value free, it just is impossible to teach 'facts' no matter how much that is naively expected by some.

Education systems swing to and fro in their dominating ethos. In the 70's it tended to be more liberal, less competetive, holistic. The pendulum swung again and it has become competetive, small focused, results based. I hated a lot of how my son was taught in primary school, so I shopped around and found a better alternative, one that was more aligned with some of my beliefs. But guess what, he's exposed to Christianity as a down side. So I figure he can work this stuff out himself. He can be exposed to belief systems that dont correlate with our own, and maybe that's even a good thing.

Funny how the " Hate America " gang is all eager to line up in their widdle brownshirts for Obama.

Its always fun to see you retreat to your tired old attacks when you can't actually produce a worthwhile thought through conversation.

Many intelligent people have stupid opinions. Sorry Rappy I don't mean to pile on but we do need to recycle. Wish I was better at it myself.

Incredibly, only the intelligent people who disagree w/ the Left have stupid opinions. That's what we're told, at least. The geniuses on the Left, they're ALWAYS spot on w/ their opinions!

You know who I wish were better at recycling ? The recycling companies and the govt ! We barely recycle half of what we intend to recycle anyways. ( per Chris ) And that's about what I've always suspected. Ever so often, some local action news I - team will follow around the collectors and see what they recycle and what they just toss in the landfill. More times than not, the whole lot gets tossed into the same garbage bin, and they're off to the local pub at the end of the day.

Even with our best intentions, we still fall well short of actually doing what we say we want.

But the point is, the professor thinks the overt public pressure , with the message of 'recycle, or die' needs to be dialed back. It's no one else's business if he or anyone else recycles.
