DEAR ABBY: I have an attractive friend who was bypassed for a front-office promotion. "Miranda" is pleasant, clean, efficient, energetic and had the same qualifications as the individual who was promoted. A management team member confided that the reason for Miranda's lack of advancement "might" be due to the numerous tattoos -- difficult to cover -- on her arms and wrists, which the manager said isn't the image the business wants to convey.

Is this discrimination? I think it's unfair because Miranda is a good worker. She keeps asking me if I have any ideas why she was bypassed. Should I tell her? I don't want to violate the manager's faith in my confidentiality, even though I will be retiring soon. -- LOYAL FRIEND IN MASSACHUSETTS

DEAR LOYAL FRIEND: Your friend's obvious tattoos prevent her from presenting the corporate image your employer prefers be conveyed to clients who visit the front office. To my knowledge, people with tattoos are not members of a protected class, which would put an employer at risk for a discrimination suit.

Because Miranda continues to ask why she wasn't promoted, and you have nothing to lose by telling her what you were told, I think you should level with her. She might prefer to work at a company where her chances for advancement aren't stymied.

Ok, this is a Dear Abbey for today, and I'm going to use it to illustrate a point. Judging people by the tats they have should be wrong, but it happens everyday. You can take a stand against your current employers, you can not get them where they can be seen, or you can move on to a more open minded or less visible position...

It's like with rape... You can wear clothes that don't attract rape-y twits, you can wear the clothes you want and deal with the threat yourself, or you can wear something NOT revealing and have some self defense training.

They are all choices we make based on society and how it will treat us in all probability.

Based on the fact there are an average of 30,000 rape based pregnancies in THIS country EVERY YEAR, what decision do you make? Pretend that men should be able to exercise self control and possibly get raped, or realize that they quite frequently DON'T have self control, and take steps to counteract what you know to be true??

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

"You can wear clothes that don't attract rape-y twits"

Used to work down the hall from the county ER where the rape victims were taken. I got the rape kits for safe keeping under secured storage and under chain-of-custody. The victims were very old to very young, in all kinds of clothes, including those oh so sexy down jackets, jeans, and boots in winter.

You're full of shit.

OONJERAH - We are too dumb to live and smart enough to wipe ourselves out.

1) Depending on the circumstances, what clothing you wear and "some self-defense training" will have little to no impact on whether you become the victim of rape or not. Rapes aren't generally "stranger danger" type attacks where some helplessly aroused male lurks in the bushes because a woman wore a short skirt.

2) Trying to draw that comparison is a pretty uncomfortable stretch. You compare impeded job andvancement with a physical assault.

3) You keep creating this false dichotomy. It's NOT "make safe choices OR presume men to have self-control". It's about both. Whether or not a woman engages in risky behavior doesn't affect how wrong the crime against her is. That is the point. People have the right not to be raped. How risky their behavior is, is ultimately irrelevant to whether or not I am allowed to be angry if a person is sexually assaulted.

What you are trying to do by shifting all the responsibility on women is to silence women who complain, silence conversation about this crime. You pretend you're not victim blaming, but you are doing exactly that.

"Men can't help it. If you get yourself raped by being stupid, don't you dare complain about it, because you won't be worth listening to."

Your attitude makes women no less unsafe than any careless behavior could.

It's really quite sickening.

Since we're on the subject of rape here, and having to endure more of Wish's ill formed views on responsibility, here's a thought for today -

rape is not about physical lust and being unable to control it, it's about asserting power and control over another person's body. That's what the rapist gets off on.

So whether it's your date "you don't get to say 'no' to me" or a stranger "I can do what I like to whoever I like" that's the mentality involved.

It's not about what you wear or what you look like, because its not about uncontrolled physical attraction. That's why rape victims can be babies through to elderly people.

None of which bears any relationship to passing judgement on people who have tatts.

Wow, four people who don't get what an analogy is...at ALL.

Tattoos have nothing to do with rape, it was all about how society SEES YOU.

And of course, I was not referring to people who cannot defend themselves....That is quite possibly the dumbest comment EVER.

And yeah, it does have to do with what you wear and how you present yourself and how YOU decide to handle the world around YOU. I wouldn't ever blame anyone for being raped, I am saying there are things you can do to lessen the chances of being in that situation.

I was mistaken for a prostitute once in a dumpy old ski coat, ugly pine tree sweater, mom jeans, and Napoleon Dynamite boots. This with no cosmetics, because makeup is stupid and causes cancer, and my generally hairy mannish face. Was it the acne, flat-chest, thunder thighs, patchy chin whiskers, unibrow, and thin pedo-stache you think?

Apparently truckers are really hard up.

I was wearing a similar outfit one night in the winter when a drunk guy accosted me after asking directions and I just wanted to go home. Appearance has nothing to do with anything, and no one but narcissist douchebags in love with their own reflection and perhaps crazed by their own middling position of insignificant power give any kind of shit what anyone wears or does to themselves.

So, evidence continues to accumulate for my "Wish is doing this for attention theory." Otherwise she wouldn't feel the need to start another rape thread when Jack already made a perfectly good one (also solely for attention and maybe a cry for help) that's a hundred posts long without even a topic change. Lawls, this is pretty funny.

Ahaha, excellent, let's wreck shit. This board got too nice and get-along gang in Miker's wake. I love burning bridges, they smell so woodsy. Except those modern ones, they smell like asphalt and tar and yelling.

In fairness, most tattoos are just bad. It's actually pretty hard to find a decent artist who comprehends basic perspective and anatomy, let alone that they can do good shading work. God forbid anyone can actually SPELL if there's any text involved, considering these tattoos are supposed to be a permanent and meaningful marking for who the hell ever.

And that's before the skin under the tattoo gets old and wrinkled and the tattoo fades and looks even more terrible. Most people do eventually regret those tattoos.

But at this point, who even notices or reacts to tattoos anymore? They're not an edgy statement of rebellion, and arguably I have my doubts they ever were. They're common as hell. At this point I see it all as just skin. Oily repulsive human skin constantly shedding dead cells and rife with feeding bacteria, fungus, and mites. The addition of ink doesn't really change the innate quality of what it is.

And if you think of it that way, whatever stupid ass clothing they use to cover that nauseating body is pretty irrelevant because they're the same awful toxic fleshbag underneath it all anyway, whether it's revealing or not.

I'm speaking the truth. Organics actually are pretty disgusting if you know enough about the details.

For example: even the hottest woman you can think of has bowel movements. And the turds smell like rotten cabbage.

The cutest kitten is covered in dander and you can often see it in their fur, which they leave everywhere. Their litter box is a horror show, and that's if they don't have worms at the time. And so on.

Life is a terrible terrible thing and a cruel hardship and joke upon us all.

Frankly, automata probably wouldn't even want to TOUCH any of us, we'd gum up their works. And thinking about why any organic would even want a relationship like that boggles my mind - what would even be the point of that?

Joss will have Ultron wear latex gloves to keep off the contamination from all those bags of meat Ultron will be squashing in the movie. The villain in a movie always needs a motivation. Sometimes humanity is a meal. Sometimes mankind is sitting on valuable real estate that the villain grabs. But sometimes there are more visceral motives to wipe out mankind -- I hate your literal guts motives.

And tatts? We can see. Not so easy to SEE which women have been victims of rape.

Well, like I said to Jack, just imagine that you're at a baseball game and it feels like the standard congratulatory ass slap at first, but then the fingers close, lovingly, lingering. A little squeeze, a tug. The fingers shift, and squeeze again.

You turn, and you receive a slow smile from Marcus, his gold tooth shining from underneath that thick bushy moustache. He winks.

And you know the night has just begun.

Anyway, caring doesn't count for much if you're not willing to stand up and stop it right then and there.

See this is the distinct divergence in thought patterns here between a woman getting groped and the way some guys feel about getting groped. If it was a hot girl you didn't know groping you, you'd kinda like it, maybe even feel flattered a little. If it was an ugly girl or a man, you'd want it to stop.

A woman getting groped by a stranger won't ever feel flattered. They'd feel ashamed and violated, hence the sexual assault part. She'll feel disturbed, probably a little frightened and sick, and angry enough to strike out at the offender. Just like if it was someone you didn't want touching you in an unwanted way.

Which is okay. If you guys ever feel like punching someone for touching you inappropriately, that's fine by most sane people's definition. It's defending yourself. And it'd be sexual assault for them to do that to you.

Would you want to be forever explaining to the company's private eye and other strangers your tattoo? Over and over again you will be coldly and cynically asked, "What's it mean?" "Because I love Wash" is not enough explanation since you'll then be asked, "Who is Wash?" followed by "What was Firefly?" Short questions that need long answers.

Unless there is a new dawning for an old TV show and Firefly gets a much higher profile then everybody will know "I am a leaf on the wind." Probably can't happen, so wordless & symbol-less tattoos are better than tattoos that need explanations.

See, dis is what I mean..

"Really? Showing up half naked on the red carpet makes
people make such a fuss??? Nawww..... I'm just wearing
a pretty dress (bats eyes innocently)"

Reba did the same thing with that red dress in the nineties.
I lost a lot of respect for her for that.

They do it for the attention, but then when the attention
gets creepy they plead naivety and innocence and it is
SOOO FULL OF BULL.

If you are going to dress like an attention whore at
least OWN it, don't pretend you don't KNOW what's going
to happen.

Me either. I view the human body itself a work of art, and to put ink to it, imo, would be like taking a Sharpie™ pen to Venus De Milo or Michelangelo's David.

Not that there's anything wrong w/ a fine lookin' tatt...

( hat / tatt.... it still works )

ETA - As for swim suits, I'd just say be honest w/ yourself, and go with what feels comfortable. If you're not Jessica Alba or a SI model, don't think you can put on a suit they wear and get the same effect at the beach, pool, what ever. Same goes for dudes. Unless you're Michael Phelps, there's no need to wear anything less than trunks.

To me, tattoos are, always have been, a form of self-mutilation.
My body isn't a wall to hang a picture; & I like my pictures to be changeable.

Do I think people who get tattoos should get permission from their shrink?
Of course not!! Who knows how crazy the shrink is?

Do I think tattoos should be against the law? No -- but
oughta be against the law to tattoo someone who's under the influence.

I just feel that anyone who's 9-years-old or so should have better sense.

Bah, ink doesn't bother me - and doesn't bother all employers either, there's one corporate drone I know who's actually fairly respected in his office despite being somewhat junior to the dinosaurs he works with, and while he does make the concession of taking his nose stud out and wearing long sleeves, nobody really seems to care overmuch, not even the clients.

Of course, in MY line of work, a little bit of ink actually IMPROVES ones work-cred, but then security is like that - I never got any tats cause I was always concerned the damage I tend to soak up would ruin them and make em look stupid, that and the whole concept repels me personally, as does the notion of punching ornaments through my flesh.

Oh, and bathing suits... one of Counts female friends (he does retro-silent movie stuff and thus has lots of vintage stuff to wear) actually does the whole old-school swimming suit, and don't ya know, I find it quite attractive in a demure sorta way.
I think showing too much skin ruins the mystery that makes eroticism work.

You and hubbs really do think more alike than I think any other person on this planet would

We were at a theme park last year and there was ONE girl wearing a long sleeved swim top and a cute skirt, and he pointed out how guys seemed to look at her and relax, vs the girls that were hanging out. I think maybe a lot of guys think that too, but think they aren't supposed to admit it...

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Not a fan of tats. They're essentially autobody paint, heavy metals and synthetic pigments and all, that you are supposed to poison yourself with by injecting it under your skin, where it stays. Why would anybody do that?

SAGAN: We are releasing vast quantities of carbon dioxide, increasing the greenhouse effect. It may not take much to destabilize the Earth's climate, to convert this heaven, our only home in the cosmos, into a kind of hell.

So if they said "I did it for the attention, but the creepy attention is really uncalled for" you would be okay with it? Or would you still think they have it coming and should shut up about it?

Awww, look at you, in all your Terrance and Phillip glory. I guess Byte is right and you're just trolling. Somehow it's a lot more charming when Byte does it. *shrugs*

You should see the synchro I get with some of the folks down at Geekfarm, it goes beyond finishing sentences to finishing THOUGHTS, leading to convos (from an external viewpoint) like this....

"We could try that French idea"
"The one where"
"Yeah"
"But without the other"
"Uh, both ways"
"Really?"
*glances at clock*
"Well the other after, cause, yanno, fish"
"You gots yours, I got mine"
(Tech convo sweeping into where to go for lunch and what to have)

Sometimes if we KNOW someone else can hear us, we'll go out of our way to try and make it sound insane, creepy or sexual.

For guys wearing tats they're trying to be the teen miscreant from junior high (who's now either some dude's bitch in prison or repeats "would you like fries with that" all day) who was soooo cool, or they are representing their prison cred or street cred.
For women, it just another way for women to try to hide their beauty. Some wear awful glasses or dreadful hair styles, some wear hideous clothes, baggy or garish colors, and some just install graffiti, whether hardware (chains, studs, noserings, neckbolts) or software (tramp stamp, ink).

It's a shame, really.

A tattoo was not one of them.
