From NOAA
Quote:

The combined average temperature across global land and ocean surfaces for August 2014 was record high for the month, at 0.75°C (1.35°F) above the 20th century average of 15.6°C (60.1°F), topping the previous record set in 1998.
The global land surface temperature was 0.99°C (1.78°F) above the 20th century average of 13.8°C (56.9°F), the second highest on record for August, behind 1998.
For the ocean, the August global sea surface temperature was 0.65°C (1.17°F) above the 20th century average of 16.4°C (61.4°F). This record high departure from average not only beats the previous August record set in 2005 by 0.08°C (0.14°F), but also beats the previous all-time record set just two months ago in June 2014 by 0.03°C (0.05°F).

Yeah. It's called a 'drought'. Happens from time to time. Never very fun, either. Had one here, just a few years ago. Lakes with lots of dry, barren land between the water's edge and the treeline.

When rain doesn't fall as much and more water is used, by a large population, that's what happens.

Today, local lakes here are back up to full pull.

If it's a local event where AGW appears to be happening, then the warm-mongers call that 'climate'. But when it's a local event which disproves AGW, that's called " weather " , and only concerns people's own back yards.

Funny.

Excellent point! The climate models are not good enough to separate climate from weather. The climatologists have not finished a convincing enough predictive mathematical model of climate. Until they do, we will be having arguments where one side keeps insisting they are right without a finished version of the theory of climate change. Climatologists are like a bunch of Einsteins who think finishing special relativity theory is good enough to win a Nobel for themselves, and aren't hurrying to complete the much more useful general relativity theory. They need to do more work before the governments get actually serious (not just pretend serious) about climate change. www.reportingclimatescience.com/

One of the most amazing phenomena in the history of education is that a speculative philosophy based on no true scientific evidence could have been universally adopted and taught as scientific fact, in all the public schools. This philosophy has been made the very framework of modern education and the underlying premise in all textbooks. It constitutes the present world-view of liberal intellectuals in every field.

This is the philosophy of evolution. Although widely promoted as a scientific fact, evolution has never been proved scientifically. Some writers still call it the theory of evolution, but even this is too generous. A scientific hypothesis should be capable of being tested in some way, to determine whether or not it is true, but evolution cannot be tested. No laboratory experiment can either confirm or falsify a process which, by its very nature, requires millions of years to accomplish significant results.

Evolution is, therefore, neither fact, theory, nor hypothesis. It is a belief—and nothing more.

Anyway Second, just getting this past the detours.

You indicated that the climate models weren't good enough. My contention is that they are - unless you are a true believer with an emotional need to deny climate change, or you're a business person with a vested interest.

I think people who are pretending to argue about climate change are just spreading FUD* - fear, uncertainty and doubt - using relatively trivial discrepancies between models to try and discredit the entire idea.

What they attempt to obscure is the broad-scale alignment that it is happening, and that it is significant, and that the differences are merely about how much, and when. Furthermore, climate change deniers like Lintzen use arguments based on bad data and logical fallacies. When I see those arguments being made in place of valid ones, or, as I mentioned, trivial discrepancies being distorted, it leads me to consider that with those people, the conclusion is already determined, and the data are irrelevant.

So my question to you is: if climate change deniers maintain their beliefs by accepting or employing deliberate chicanery, who exactly will be convinced by better models?

Note well that it's a waste of time to expend effort persuading skeptical AURaptor. Whatever skeptics believe, it makes no worldly difference. What can make a difference?

Climate science is kind of half-ass science -- great at gathering data, not good at explaining consequences because its predictive climate models are stinking piles of crap on fire. BUT THAT CAN BE FIXED. Not to persuade skeptics, because that's a waste of time. Fixed to persuade governments.

I am confident the models will be fixed. That will be the end of guessing and the beginning of predicting the future. Soon we will find out just how bad the future really will be. Maybe we will find out in time to change it. www.reportingclimatescience.com

And one more time: it is unimportant what climate skeptics believe. They make noise because they are frustrated by their irrelevance to the real world and their place in society. They just can't believe how insignificant they are and they rage against that. You can ignore them. You cannot change them.

2nd - wrong. Skeptics make noise because there is no " crisis " , & we strongly object to the transfer of wealth planned as the sole solution to a non existent problem when AGW believers ADMIT that such drastic measures will have no measurable impact on global climate.

It's $ literally being flushed down the drain which otherwise could be put to good use. Yes skeptics object to that & will continue to speak out on the immorality & senselessness of the AGW agenda.

We often hear that there is a “scientific consensus” about climate change. But as far as the computer models go, there isn’t a useful consensus at the level of detail relevant to assessing human influence. . . . The models roughly describe the shrinking extent of Arctic sea ice observed over the past two decades, but they fail to describe the comparable growth of Antarctic sea ice, which is now at a record high. . . . Any serious discussion of the changing climate must begin by acknowledging not only the scientific certainties, but also the uncertainties, especially in projecting the future. Recognizing those limits, rather than ignoring them, will lead to a more sober and ultimately more productive discussion of climate change and climate policies. To do otherwise is a great disservice to climate science itself.

"Fixed to persuade governments."

Thank Second. I'm going to think about that so it'll be a while before I answer.

Part of my initial response is that this is incompatible with what's been called the 'deep government.' And that the people of the US have not - for nearly a century - used their power of numbers to radically challenge that government. That even if the models were solid, the predictions inescapable, AND THE INFORMATION AVAILABLE, the deep government - in concert with our visible elected officials - would use their collusion with media to cast it all into doubt, and to convince us there was nothing to be done. As they so successfully have done to date.

Are these thoughts reasonable? Is there some other factor I need to take into account? Something that would change in the dynamic with better models? I'll need to think some more.

What is happening now about climate change is exactly what majority rule looks like. There is no deep government in the shadows running things in secret, against the will of the majority. It is all out in the open. Texas isn't the world but it has got some lesson from the last 200 years about how elected governments work.

In Texas, the people want government to stay on autopilot. The people hate change. The electorate wants weaklings to rule them or, in other words, human zeroes in charge who will not change direction. People like these get elected, not because they are good, but because they are nothings:

Senator Ted Cruz http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Cruz
Sen. John Cornyn http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Cornyn
Gov. Rick Perry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Perry
Do I need mention Gov. George Bush Junior? That guy was a nothing and when the country panicked over 9/11, he proved it by also panicking.

In Texas, they just don't like anyone at the top of government who has any kind of larger purpose other than growing wealthy. When someone who is not a zero is elected, Texans decide they don't like them. Texans were angry at President Johnson for championing civil rights. They impeached Governor Sam Houston for refusing to swear loyalty to the Confederacy.

The zeroes will finally do something with the power they're entrusted with, but only when there is a crisis. Government will respond to climate change when the electorate get panicky. The sense of panic could be natural disaster, like hurricanes hitting Corpus Christi or Houston every year for a decade. Or, much better in my opinion, a climate model that can be trusted saying hurricanes will hit over and over.

Kansas won't care what happens to the Texas Gulf Coast, but it will care about climate change only if Kansas is hit by many more tornadoes. That's just the way people are about somebody else's problem 1000 miles away.

If you want to stop world climate change, change the minds of people who can change the world. It's too bad that the kind of people getting elected are no good in a crisis, but that's the kind of rulers the voters want, at least in Texas. It's not valid to extrapolate from Texas to the whole world, but I'm doing it anyway.

"There is no deep government in the shadows running things in secret, against the will of the majority."

I disagree. When people were hopeful about change and the healthcare system was at the top, the vast, vast majority wanted a Canadian system - single payer. They were reluctantly persuaded to settle for the public option, second best but it gets the job almost done. Then Obama met with insurance industry leaders and unilaterally took that off the table as well. Who made that decision? It wasn't the people.

Or as another example, until recently, most people were hardly aware there was a country called 'Ukraine'. But Nuland (of 'fuck the EU' fame) bragged that the US had spent 5 billion to influence Ukraine's internal politics over the years and it lead me to wonder - who made that decision? That policy was carried out and that money was spent over many administrations, heads of the State Department, and congressional incarnations - all visible members of government, who apparently came - and went - and didn't influence that policy one whit. Did the will of the people make that policy? Did the government?

I'm not a conspiracy theorist. I don't believe the Illuminati, or the Masons (are they the same?), or the Knights Templar (are THEY the same?) or secret society de jour is plotting in the background to carry out some grand design. But that doesn't mean wealthy people - who by nature of their wealth exert undue power - and who have an agenda - aren't influencing the organizations that influence the government: like PNAC or ALEC. I presume you don't dispute that fact that those groups exist and are working mightily to change policy.

BTW, I did some back-of-the-envelope thinking and decided that indeed, corporate interests run both government policy and media coverage regarding global warming in the US. I did that by simply looking at media coverage, polls and government policy over time in the US, UK and Germany. It wasn't what I'd call a rigorous investigation, just getting the lay of the land. But groups with an agenda can get inordinate coverage by repeatedly raising even bogus claims. And while those claims are investigated and found to be untrue, it happens much later, and quietly. And in the absence of routine coverage of facts - studies, figures etc - those splashy claims erode public perception of the reality.

While the US and UK are on a similar track, Germany has headed in the opposite direction. But polls tend to follow government policy, not the other way around, so it looks like in the US and UK business decides policy, government remains silent about the issue, and private groups garner headlines to influence public perception.

If it's a local event where AGW appears to be happening, then the warm-mongers call that 'climate'. But when it's a local event which disproves AGW, that's called " weather " , and only concerns people's own back yards.

Funny.

Could any of the water distribution problems in California have anything to do with the diversion of the state's water supply to the Los Angeles basin? The entire plan was to starve the state of water in order to support development of LA - seems to be working as advertized, right?

What about the missing link? Is it still missing? Must the Evolutionists still base their beliefs upon, well, believing? Shirley there must be some incontrovertible truth and evidence which demands that their beliefs are more substantive that a religion, or mythology, right? Right?
Or is all this "evidence" only showing that humans evolved from dinosaurs?

But polls tend to follow government policy, not the other way around, so it looks like in the US and UK business decides policy, government remains silent about the issue, and private groups garner headlines to influence public perception, while corporate media broadcasts the 'news'.

Saving The Planet On The Cheap
Sep 22 2014 @ 12:35pm

Last week, Krugman contended that it can be done:

I’ve just been reading two new reports on the economics of fighting climate change: a big study by a blue-ribbon international group, the New Climate Economy Project, and a working paper from the International Monetary Fund. Both claim that strong measures to limit carbon emissions would have hardly any negative effect on economic growth, and might actually lead to faster growth. This may sound too good to be true, but it isn’t. These are serious, careful analyses.

He noted the “dramatic progress in renewable energy technology, with the costs of solar power, in particular, plunging, down by half just since 2010.” But Michael Levi points out that the “optimistic cost estimates have little to do with cheap solar.” Those estimates are possible only when you figure in the impacts of nuclear power, carbon capture technology, abundant bioenergy, and increased efficiency:

Krugman does an important service by rebutting those on both the right and the left who claim that serious climate action requires turning our economic system upside down. (It’s a good guess that this Wednesday column from Mark Bittman, which basically called for the end of capitalism in order to deal with climate change, provoked Krugman to write his latest.) But the sorts of policies you pursue if you think that serious climate action is mostly about wind and solar are fundamentally different from those you pursue if you believe otherwise. A central upshot is that if the modeling exercises that Krugman touts are correct, and countries pursue policies based on a belief in wind and solar, the actual costs of cutting emissions will be far higher than what Krugman claims. At the same time, if the modeling exercises Krugman highlights are wrong, he hasn’t given us particularly strong reason to believe that steep emissions cuts would be cheap.

McArdle also throws cold water in Krugman’s direction. She hesitates to draw too many conclusions from the New Climate Economy study he cites:

The details are a bit fuzzy so far (the report promises more in a forthcoming technical appendix). But most of the benefit seems to come from reducing respiratory diseases in the developing world and ending fossil-fuel subsidies, which are, no matter what you may have heard on the Internet, also concentrated in the developing world, not the U.S. tax code. …

This is not to say that the report is wrong. But many of the people who read it seem to have come away saying, “OK, great, it’s free, why can’t we do it?” Even if this is a free lunch over the long term, it is not a free lunch right now to the people who would need to make major changes in their lives. No matter how long you point to the equations, they will resist.

As I think about it Second, government is far more than passive in its role of global warming denialism.

EPA Muzzles Advisory Board Scientists

August 13, 2014

A memo from EPA's chief of staff makes it clear: members of the agency's many science advisory panels are not to talk to the news media or Congress without permission.

That "don't talk" memo was presented at a closed-door July 24, 2014, portion of EPA's Science Advisory Board (SAB) meeting, and it was not publicly disclosed at the time. Standard SAB procedure follows federal law in requiring publication of materials distributed to SAB members in advance of a meeting.

The memo, from Chief of Staff Gwendolyn Keyes Fleming, was dated April 4, 2014, and was directed to Christopher Zarba, director of the Office of the Science Advisory Board and David Allen, chairman of the SAB. It said: "Committee members themselves and FACA Committees as a whole, should refrain from directly responding to these external requests related to their efforts to advise the agency...." Attached to the memo was an "EPA Policy" restricting communications between Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA) committee members and parties outside EPA.

And just for completeness' sake, here's some information about the people funding the global warming denial effort:

http://phys.org/news/2013-12-koch-brothers-reveals-funders-climate.htm
l

Key findings include:

Conservative foundations have bank-rolled denial. The largest and most consistent funders of organizations orchestrating climate change denial are a number of well-known conservative foundations, such as the Searle Freedom Trust, the John William Pope Foundation, the Howard Charitable Foundation and the Sarah Scaife Foundation. These foundations promote ultra-free-market ideas in many realms.
Koch and ExxonMobil have recently pulled back from publicly visible funding. From 2003 to 2007, the Koch Affiliated Foundations and the ExxonMobil Foundation were heavily involved in funding climate-change denial organizations. But since 2008, they are no longer making publicly traceable contributions.
Funding has shifted to pass through untraceable sources. Coinciding with the decline in traceable funding, the amount of funding given to denial organizations by the Donors Trust has risen dramatically. Donors Trust is a donor-directed foundation whose funders cannot be traced. This one foundation now provides about 25% of all traceable foundation funding used by organizations engaged in promoting systematic denial of climate change.

West Coast warming linked to naturally occurring changes

Naturally occurring changes in winds, not human-caused climate change, are responsible for most of the warming on land and in the sea along the West Coast of North America over the last century, a study has found.

The analysis challenges assumptions that the buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has been a significant driver of the increase in temperatures observed over many decades in the ocean and along the coastline from Alaska to California.

Changes in ocean circulation as a result of weaker winds were the main cause of about 1 degree Fahrenheit of warming in the northeast Pacific Ocean and nearby coastal land between 1900 and 2012, according to the analysis of ocean and air temperatures over that time. The study, conducted by researchers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the University of Washington, was published Monday by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Natural, wind-driven climate patterns in the Pacific Ocean, such as El Niño and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, are already known to exert a powerful influence on sea and land temperatures over years and even decades.
