Bow your heads you peons! The Emperor has made it known from on high that there shall be Immigration Reform. The Immigration Reform and Control Act:

-require employers to attest to their employees' immigration status;
-make it illegal to hire or recruit illegal immigrants knowingly;
-legalize certain seasonal agricultural illegal immigrants, and;
-legalize illegal immigrants who entered the United States before January 1, 1982 and -resided there continuously with the penalty of a fine, back taxes due, and admission of guilt;
-candidates are required to prove that they were not guilty of crimes, that they were in the country before January 1, 1982, and that they possessed minimal knowledge about U.S. history, government, and the English language.

The Emperor has Spoken!

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

SHINY, I'm going to let your post settle for a bit before I respond.

One of the things I keep suggesting is that if we want REAL immigration reform (and not just amnesty after amnesty) we need to make REAL changes.

The first being, amend the 14th amendment. We are the only nation that I know of that considers babies born within borders to be citizens. All other nations (that I know of) assume that the baby's citizenship is the citizenship of the parents.

The 14th amendment creates the situation of "anchor babies"... people who struggle over the border (or come as "birth tourists" if you're Chinese) have children, and then use "the breakup of the family" as an excuse to stay.

Make English the official language of the USA, as a Constitutional amendment.

Stop mucking about in Central and South America. WE (the USA) have militarily supported so many wealth landowners, bankers, industrialists and generalissimos... oligarchs, in essence... for so many decades that WE (the USA) have created a living hell from which our southern neighbors are just beginning to climb. We should let them find their own justice. Withdraw all military funding.

Withdraw from NAFTA and CAFTA, which impoverished so many rural farmers and drove them northward to our border. Stop pushing the TPP, which will do the same. (Those trade agreements really hurt us, too. That "giant sucking sound" that Ross Perot warned would happen to our jobs? Well, he was right. The only group that benefited was the transnationals.)

Seriously rethink our visa process. There are people (wealthy Chinese expats primarily) living in multi-million dollar homes in Arcadia CA (a dozen miles outside of LA) whose family members are on welfare.

For these major and permanent reforms, I would be willing to consider another amnesty.

Qualifications to be a US President:
I don't recall anything about having a basic grasp of reality
or even any credibility. ... I mean ... what's the fun of that?

Wouldn't we all like to see Palin vs Clinton for President?

America loves a winner!

@ EC - Palin quote is false.

Fabricated Sarah Palin quotes often originate with satire sites, but it does not appear these particular memes resulted from fake news stories. Nevertheless, not only did Palin not make the "Eskimos and other foreigners" comment, she did not even appear on Hannity on 19 November 2014.

But you already knew that, didn't you?

There are some good points in your comments namely, how we interfere in the sovereignty of Latin American Nations, affecting their economy thereby creating a Super-Rich class, who, in turn, desperately manipulate the wealth of their nation that creates a class of Super-Poor. It is ironic because those Super-Poor turn to the U.S. for relief, in search of the American Dream, which is not as extreme as the Oligarchs in their native land.

You're right, we should butt out militarily and allow the democratic process to take hold in those countries. Of course, the Super-Rich in our land would need to find another market which to exploit. It is a vicious cycle. In Puerto Rico, American companies and corporations have 99-year leases whereby they pay little to no tax. A tropical island, where Domino Sugar once had a factory, both rice and sugar is imported from U.S. companies - which costs more for the people of the island than if they were to grow it there. That seems fair, doesn't it? I would venture to say that if the moon had any inhabitants, American corporations would find a way to exploit them as well. Look up the term Operation Bootstrap - my mother and grandmother came to this country as a result of it's affect and goals.

The government supports fascist regimes, creating poverty and political upheaval, then opens it's arms to those fleeing their countries, only to have the immigrants and sons of immigrants that came before rant and rave about borders and illegal crossings. This shit just gets better and better. Who actually was here first? And who discovered what country for whom?

I say make a law that will allow those who come illegally to earn their place in society. A kind of provisional visa, they work and pay taxes, say for 7 years, at the end of which they apply for citizenship. They must learn english and learn about America the Beautiful. If they fail the test and to learn english, they remain provisional for another 7 years, and so on. That goes for those sneaky fucking Europeans as well. You're probably thinking what about securing the border? Really!? That's a myth.

But we must stop feeding the Super-Rich in those countries, with our military and economic support. In the end it would make more sense to control the influx of immigrants (from all nations) by having them apply for a provisional visa that would permit them to work and live here, but pay taxes and penalties. Like I said they must earn their stay here.
