That's good. Maybe you can cultivate a neighbor or friend?

What about you, BRENDA? You go out for a walk almost every day. Anyone you say "hi" to on a regular basis?

If I see one of the ladies I play mah jong with I will stop and talk to them if they are willing. Sometimes I talk to shop keepers, we have a lot of small stores in my city and several I go into regularly. So, I talk to them if they aren't too busy.

But every single day. Nope. Last year a couple of people called me to check on me but other than that. Again nope.

Nah... At least with the neighbors anyhow. I don't want to be that close to anybody who lives close enough to just drop by and knock on the door whenever they feel like it. My neighbors are chill, but that's not something I'm comfortable with.

As for the friends, they've all got a lot more going on than I do. I feel like I'd be adding just one more additional pressure in their lives if I were to do that. We're all barely 40 right now... Maybe later when kids are all grown up and out on their own we'll visit it.

Hell... Just bringing up that idea right now might get them thinking negative thoughts about just having turned 40 themselves.

That being said, whenever I go up on the roof or I'm going to be on my tall ladder I make sure to let a neighbor know to maybe check to see if I'm dead if I don't get back to them in 30 minutes.

damn but those ladybugs are voracious aphid eaters! It must have eaten at least 100 aphids over the course of 3 days! The milkweed will be cleaned up soon, if it keeps chowing down like that!

I had a very lazy Monday and Tuesday. I don't know what was with me; I just couldn't get my rear in gear. But I did manage over the past week to dig up most of the stray grass, dead plants and weeds in the star pine area, and I think I'm going to start trimming back the rock purslane and purple lantana. I decided I'm going to plant the plants some time in October. right now they're in an area that gets sun less than half a day, kind of a "nursery" area, and if I put them out in the full sun in the middle of summer they'll fry.

Looking for a source of "white lightnin" lantana for the front curb area. Dark leaves, sparkling white flowers, drought-tolerant, butterfly-friendly groundcover. What's not to like? I have a bunch of low-growing plants for the curb/sidewalk area:

beach daisy (erigeron) about 8" tall, dark green leaves and pale lavendar flowers with golden centers, butterfly and bee-friendly

Mattole select CA fucshia (white leaves, brilliant orange trumpet-shaped flowers, about 8" tall)

White lightnin lantana- dark green leaves with sparkling white flowers

rock purslane: succulents with bright magenta cup-shaped flowers on tall wands

"silver carpet" CA aster: fuzzy white leaves and pink-lavendar daisy-like flowers with golden centers

cotyledon succulents with fat finger-like pale green leaves with undertones of purple and shocking orange flowers in spring

The only thing I'm missing is yellow flowers. I have some sternbergia (looks like yellow crocus, blooms in fall but the blossoms drop pretty quickly) but I'd like some yellow-flowered short plant.

in one corner, a fall display: plum-flowered crysanthemum, purple fountain grass (about 5' when fully grown), pink/chartreuse/pale green aeonium, and CA goldenrod (also about 5' when fully grown).

So I kind of have an idea of what I want and where, and all I need to do is chip away at it.

I believe it. If God wanted me reaching 20 feet in the air he would have made me 15 feet tall.

I do it more for my grandma than anything else. Any time I've mentioned I'm getting up on a ladder for anything she's asking me if I told a neighbor. Even if I'm talking about a step-ladder.

This conversation reminds me of an episode of 30 Rock where Liz and somebody else were talking about the buddy system (and realizing how alone they were) and she said that ever since she was 30 she had obsessive thoughts of what would happen if she fell in the shower whenever she wasn't dating somebody.

Back from mah jong and an errand run. I was sooooo close to a really good hand in mah jong today but 2 other people had the tiles that I needed. If I had gotten either a 6 circle or a white dragon, I would have won that hand, and gotten 100 extra points. That is frustrating.

Well!
I let the dog out for her bedtime potty break (I always go out with a flashlight first to check for coyotes)and she tears off across the yard barking like a maniac.

That usually means she's cornered something, or at least heard something. MY first thought was ... rat (We have them around, I just ordered a rat trap) but she was too persistent in one spot (Rats usually run away) so I thought ...

Uh oh. Skunk.

But, no skunk in the back corner wall.

She was barking up at the top of the wall, and my next thought was ... 'possum. Must have climbed up the wall.

Then what should happen but the animal she was barking at jumped down off the wall and charged her: a big ole raccoon.

Haven't seen THEM around in a long time!

Dog thought she was going to fight the raccoon! So I ran after it yelling and flashing my flashlight and it ran away.

I worry now that when I set the rat trap I'll capture something not only much bigger ("possum, which I would just release) but more aggressive (Raccoon). Better harvest everything and clean up the yard first so as not to attract the bigger critters before I set the rat trap. which BTW I'll bait with bacon "glued" to spring mechanism with peanut butter.

On a happier note ... our neighbor has a fig tree which leans over towards the curb, and it's producing the sweetest, tastiest figs ever. I only take what's fallen and still good because the figs are way too high to pick, but boy, are they good!

Hearing aide appointment went okay. Found out how to keep these rechargeable ones clean from the lady that my file has been flipped to in this office. She also said to come in about every six months to get them checked. Also recommended that I come in once a year for a hearing test as my right ear is starting to go now.

Asked her about the gentleman, I had been dealing with and he decided that this year was the right time to take an early retirement.

Also have an virtual appointment with the doctor that I am hoping will take me on as a patient. But I do have forms to drop off at the office before then.

ETA: For doing all of that today, I treated myself to some all natural cookies. Decided I deserved some cookies.

It seems another small BC community has been destroyed by wild fire. Monte Lake was hit by the White Rock Lake fire. The fire jumped Highway 97, heavy winds blew burning embers onto the town. So far no one has been reported missing. No word on how much of the town is gone as small fires and a lot of smoke in the area, so survey crews can't go in yet.

ETA: For doing all of that today, I treated myself to some all natural cookies. Decided I deserved some cookies.

A few months ago I lost a lot of hearing in my right ear. I figured it was wax, though I've never had that problem before. So after a while I got the wax remover stuff and a 'otic irrigator' (a bulb), which didn't seem to work. So later I got a pump-bottle irrigator which also didn't work after using the wax remover stuff. Then my left ear started to go ... same thing.

I'd sort of not really cared too much since I still had a good ear and I was pretty sure it was just wax, but once my left ear also stared to go, I needed to do something. Eventually for my left ear I used a home-made ear cleaning solution (bicarb to break down protein bonds, isopropyl alcohol to make water 'wetter', mild dish detergent to penetrate wax, and of course water) that I let sit for a half-hour or so, and FORCEFULLY water-irrigated my ear with the bulb and this HUGE tube-shaped thing came out. I swear it was 3/4 of an inch long and shaped like my ear canal, with a really small open central core. So I did my right ear and it didn't work. But a couple weeks later I tried again remembering to FORCEFULLY irrigate my ear with the bulb, and I got like three chunks out, each about 1/2 inch long and tube-shaped with a small central opening. (Afterward I used a mix of vinegar and isopropyl alcohol in both ears for a few days, to keep them dry and clear up any remaining infection.)

And now instead of having my TV volume up at 75 it's down at 30.

I think I had an ear infection - not behind the eardrum, but in the tissue of the outer ear canal itself. And that caused it to ooze protein-filled fluid which clung to the sides of the ear canal, eventually clotted (basically became a scab), and then trapped wax, dead cells etc.

I mention this because I know you get your ears irrigated, so I know you have problems with keeping your ear canals open. Does your audiologist check your ears to make sure they're clear? I can't imagine them not doing it, but I can see how it could be a problem if they didn't.

Rechargeable hearing aids sound so much better than having to keep changing out those really awkward (to me) itty-bitty batteries!

Cookies sound good!

OH! and ... good luck finding a new doc! And I'm glad it was just a matter of early retirement!

I myself was avoiding the dentist due to COVID-19. But since I got the vax a few weeks ago I thought it was time to make an appointment for a regular checkup and cleaning. So I called and got a really weird message ... nothing about hours or location or 'if this is an emergency ...' just a recording to 'leave a message'. Which I did, gave my phone number and all, and waited, but got no call back for a couple of weeks. I was thinking that maybe business was slow because they had just bought the old practice from my previous dentist, and I wasn't sure how many patients actually transferred over ... and then came COVID-19. So I was thinking maybe they were on reduced hours or semi-shut-down, but their website was still up. So I figured 'what the heck' and tried calling again. Anyway - they're ** SO ** busy that I had to schedule my appointment for November!

So far, so good!

I don't know what Highway 97 looks like. Here they used to think that multi-lane divided freeways were good fire breaks, but after the last few years they don't count on that any more.

These fires ...

I can check the box that says "Have boobs squeezed in a vise".

I hope they don't find anything except the clip and seroma from previous surgery.

Asked her about the gentleman, I had been dealing with and he decided that this year was the right time to take an early retirement.

No she didn't. But I do try to keep my ears clear of wax as much as possible. All she did was check the hearing aides and tell me how to keep them clean from ear wax. I have had ear problems off and on since I was a child.

They are. That's why I went for rechargeables this time as I had a hard time remembering if I changed the batteries or not.

*Fingers crossed* on the doc. That's on August 16th.

Well, I decided to ask because it was so sudden. I was only there like on the 10th of June to see the guy.

The cookies were good and they are just a few in the packages. Just enough for a taste.

I should find a new dentist myself. I have a couple of broken teeth that happened after they were repaired. But my problem is that my mouth happens to be my Achilles Heel.

I don't know what Highway 97 looks like. Here they used to think that multi-lane divided freeways were good fire breaks, but after the last few years they don't count on that any more.

These fires ...

Highway 97 is just a two lane stretch of road up in that area but it is a main road. I am talking about the low Interior of the province. Areas of BC you can't do anything as fancy as you can do down in California because the terrain is too rough. Steep areas because of mountains and of course lots of trees.

Also we have ACTUAL RAIN where I am after 50 days without. It started around midnight then stopped and restarted at around 1am when I was just going to sleep. I woke up around 2:40am and it was still raining. Everything is wet.

I am heading out in a bit and I need my umbrella and my jacket. I also have socks on today. Oh well. At least this will help some.

Now THAT'S what I call successful self-doctoring!

Embarassed to admit I once had to have a chunk of wax removed by the ENT bc it was right up against my eardrum. My ears get some sort of fungal infection so I always dry them out with a cotton swab after a shower, but apparently shoved a piece of wax further in. I've taken to swabbing my ears out with glycerol, which helps liquify the wax and keep my ear canals in better condition.

I will be going to dentist this Monday. Im trying a new one that's closer to home. I used to like our family dentist but she's gotten into the habit of trying to "upsell" everything - worse since Covid bc I think she's trying to makeup for lost revenue - and I hate to be in a situation where I'm always second-guessing her recommendations.

So, off I go this Monday.

Then on hubby sees his endocrinologist on Thursday and on Friday dear daughter and I get to see the gynecologist.

Next week hubby and dear daughter will go to see a temporary fill-in neuro to get new Rxs bc their old neuro passed away, and (of course) I always go with them.

And later in the month hubby and I get to see the dermatologist bc of skin changes.

Also, some time this month we have to get the house heat-treated. The first inspector lost the report so I had to have the house re-inspected yesterday, and he found the same areas of termite activity. Not tenting, which takes three days, but heat treated, which takes 8 hours. So we have to figure out where we go for a day and what we do with the dog.

Maybe I should get the dog's teeth cleaned while I'm at it, and just make a clean sweep of everything.

I DID say it was going to be "doctor month"!

I really tried to figure out what chemically resembles earwax, looking for a like-dissolves-like compound. But earwax doesn't resemble anything one might find around the house.

Glycerol also doesn't resemble earwax, so I'm curious how you think it helps.

It also has a couple of interesting properties: it attracts moisture which would make it seem not helpful in your case because it would keep your outer ear canals moist; BUT then 2) it seems to help skin cells age regularly. They start out as 'cuboidal' live cells deeps within the skin, then gradually die, dry out, and flatten as they are pushed to the surface. In some people, the dry skin cells are extremely irregular and so are tightly interlocked with other dry skin cells, so they don't shed normally in small amounts over time, but stick together in thick layers. Somehow glycerol stops that from happening. (The other thing that does that are the various vitamin A analogues - ie versions of retinol. But they have a lot more side-effects than glycerol.) And glycerol would be a great commercial skin 'conditioner' of it wasn't for its very unpleasant sticky property.

I've read that swimmers use IPA to dry their ears and prevent swimmer's ear. I've also read that a 50/50 mix of IPA and vinegar is useful for drying the outer ear canal and making it inhospitable to infection. And that's the mix I used for a few days after I cleared my ears.

But glycerol seems to work for you!

Maybe I should try that.

Stupid comment number whatever by my boss's husband on Friday evening when she dropped something off to me. They were on their bikes and he looked back at the apartment building and said, "So, I guess your apartment is rather quiet."

I said, "Yes, it is as there is only me there and whatever else I may have on. Like music, or the tv or the computer."

They live so close-by to your new place? Uhmmm ... my hope is that they don't make dropping-by a habit.

Just being nosy - way back when after you just moved out she was renting that room to some young dude who was (hopefully) healthy enough with good enough thyroid function to be able to tolerate cold, damp, substandard conditions. (And OMG, does she not have enough self-awareness to realize that charging rent for that place contradicts her Christian values?)

Is she still renting that place? If not, I'd be really curious about the reason.

My boss and her husband don't make a habit of dropping by. They have been here a total of 4 times now. Twice they have been in my actual apartment and 2 times I have met them down in the lobby or outside.

Kiki, my boss has never rented a room out in their house.

MY EX-LANDLADY, I have no idea if they have a new tenant for that crappy "apartment"
I was renting from them.

MY BOSS and her husband from 2019 until September of 2020 had their son and daughter-in-law living with them.

Does that mean that for the while you've been in your new place you were a lot closer to work than you were before? That improved commute is a plus!

S'okay. We all get confused. I've done it here too.

It does. I can walk there and back to my place much easier. No buses or hills to climb. It is a plus. It means my legs are a lot less tired when I get home.
