A literally house-shaking helicopter's been going overhead every few minutes. I'm guessing it's a water-dropping one coming to Bonelli Lake to fill up for this fire: https://ktla.com/news/local-news/rosemead-fire-crews-battle-small-brus

I just caught sight of it. Yes, it's a water-dropping helicopter with the snorkel hanging down, but not a Sikorsky 'Sky Crane' like I imagined, just a regular-looking helicopter with a big belly. And not Whittier Narrows - something much closer. I smell smoke - strong, freshly emitted, acrid smoke. It just hasn't made it onto the internet yet.

We've been trying to restore our cell connection to T-Mobile ever since it started crapping out a month or two ago. Used to have so-so signal, not great but enuf for a text, at least. But lately can't get a simple text thru for hours at a time

T-Mobile sent us new pre-acrivated SIM cards which MIGHT solve the problem, but our signal was so crappy that they couldn't connect from our home.
Spent 45 minutes on hold with "customer care" (in the Philippines I think) who spent 15 minutes with us on the phone doing nothing except confirming that the cards were activated at their end

Then she xfered us to "tech support" (in Mumbai, I think) who spent 7 minutes telling us he couldn't hear us -altho we could hear him fine on our landline, the problem was at his end - before dropping our call.

So we drove to T-Mobile where, it turns out, the signal was MUCH better, and confirmed our SIM cards were working. But our phones still don't work at home.

Getting fed up with T-Mobile. I think they swallowed Sprint and have indigestion. Also, they're trying to push everyone to "5G", so they're not supporting LTE or anything lower freq.

In addition, my Fastmail email has developed some weird problem where the contents of some folders have become invisible. Hubby loaded Thunderbird which allows me to see my Fastmail emails. I sent in a tech support request five days ago which they acknowledged but haven't fixed yet.

And finally, our Spectrum (phone/"landline", inet) has been strangely sporadic over the past week - inet off for some minutes, then back. Phone off for a few minutes, then back. Seems to be ok now, but we've had some urgent issues to take care of, so when EVERYTHING is on the blink, it's very frustrating and, frankly, pisses me off.

My buddy uses US Mobile and loves it. He says it never drops a call, it's month to month and no contract. He also said that he was able to use his phone from Verizon and they provided him with a tool to unlock the phone.

$15/mo for unlimited text and talk with no taxes above that. I can't remember what he said unlimited data would be. I also don't know if there are discounts for multiple lines.

There's no reason to use TMobile or any of the big carriers anymore. You should use this opportunity to make the switch. Back when I got rid of my cell phone around 7 years ago I was paying almost $70 per month for just unlimited calls. What a ripoff.

Maybe pick up a pre-pay. It's a cheap $40 or so troubleshooting move. I also have T-Mobile and they 'fixed' my signal problems in my city - mostly restored back to merely difficult and problematic after recently becoming impossible. But then again just today I got VMs and texts HOURS late, and only accidentally after I turned my phone off and back on because I couldn't get a signal to send out. I've been in your area with a Verizon prepay - and basically had no signal. So I can tell you by experience T-Mobile and Verizon suck in your area.

I THINK the only other backbone carrier in SoCal besides those 2 is AT&T. I THINK everyone else uses either T-Mobile, Verizon, or AT&T towers. Maybe you should try picking up an AT&T pre-pay?

Or try this?

As I understand it, the smaller providers actually use the "big boys'" networks. I doubt that US Mobile has put up its own towers. And the problem seems to be an actual coverage problem: cell tower antenna not aimed in our direction or in a shadow of some sort, or not provided with as much power as before.

Not at all wedded toany particular carrier. Had Verizon before, but dumped them because their coverage was worse than T-Mobile's, and they were dicking with us and telling hubby his phone was "no good" and had been exposed to water when we knew for a fact it hadn't. They even went thru this whole song and dance of applying a voltmeter to some random spot and saying "See?" Worse, hubby was there when they did that to the person in front of him and the person behind him. He made sure, on his way out, to say very loudly to the people in line that Verizon was trying to rip them off to buy a new phone. (WHich is was T-Mobile seems to be doing now.)

Also, "Been there, done that" with using a secondary provider who leases someone else's infrastructure. When we had dial-up, we went thru a company that ran on the Verizon backbone, and every time we were throttled they pointed at each other.

Spectrum is offering wireless, but I need to make sure that NONE of it is on the same infrastructure as our inet/landline service. The whole point of using 2 different carriers is that their systems won't crash at the same time. Or, more prosaically, we don't wind up trying to report a phone fault on the system that is at fault.

Yeah. They piggyback over large provider's networks.

If you're forced to pay for shit though, you might as well pay a lot less for shit, IMO.

It sounds like you're getting ripped off twice in the deal.

Three times, really, if you're splitting carriers and not even maxing out the family discount.

It's interesting Signy. Nowadays, there are companies that build and maintain the physical cell towers, while the cell carriers do the 'network'. What that means is that there can never be more cell towers than physically mapped (as per the one link which shows the cell-tower owner names), and a lot of different carriers share the same towers. Cell tower number and placement is pretty limited.

In terms of signal, it looks like the carrier transceivers are aimed in specific directions, and from the map I saw, generally not yours.

In your area there's' only T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T as far as I can tell that are the carriers, everyone else is renting network from them.

Since by experience I can say that T-Mobile and Verizon have no 4G/ LTE signal in your area, that only leaves AT&T to try.

Also, from my experience - even though signal is the first and most basic thing you need for adequate cell service, there are also capacity limitations. I've had people try to call me and tell me they got a recording indicating there were no lines available. And on my end, even when I've had strong signal, I've spent upwards of 15 minutes trying to get a 5-word SMS text out.

Anyway, I think you're stuck trying AT&T cell service as the last remaining carrier to try, to see if they're any better.

When it comes to a landline, do you have AT&T in your area? They do copper-wire phone service.

Speaking of landlines, did I mention that after 10 years I discovered I don't even have service to my house?

I didn't know that until I hooked up the new decorative wall plates in the living room to the CAT5 cables in the wall. Since I wasn't paying for anything, I didn't expect dial tone (I really didn't know what to expect), but I didn't expect dead silence.

When I went down to some sort of "network box" in my basement next to the breaker box, I discovered that even though all of the coax cable on a huge splitter is connected to a line from outside, none of the CAT5 cables taped to them were.

I checked outside about a week or two later and there doesn't seem to be anything going into that box except for the coaxial cable, or anything even resembling phone service ending anywhere near it.

Man... you can tell that times have changed. I remember when I moved into my first apartment, getting my home phone set up was one of the very first things I did.

Our copper wire service would be Verizon.

Curiously, altho Spectrum (formerly Warner) was our sole cable (fiberoptic) provider, Frontier just installed its own fiberoptic cables and the rumor is that AT&T is dusting off its 15-year delayed FIOS installation as well. So AFA fiberoptic is concerned it looks like we have more choices.

Signy, have you considered 2 landlines? Fiberoptic will go out when the power goes out because its optical/ electric translation depends on the 110V system. At my place the power goes out for no apparent reason on the order of once a month or so (though usually for less than an hour, sometimes just a minute or 2). And in case of a large earthquake, obviously the fiberoptic system will be down for a long time because the power will be down for a long time. But the copper line might survive what the grid won't. That could make it an essential backup. Of course that isn't 'efficient' but it may be more rugged.

Remember the good old days when the power would go out and your phone just worked?

How did we get to this point?

Did those new SIM cards help at all, Sigs?

I remember after moving out where I'm at now I had horrible reception until I went to Verizon and they gave me new SIM cards. Apparently I had a 2G SIM that wasn't playing well with the 4G towers out here, even though it wasn't a problem out in the Chicago and Milwaukee suburbs. That fixed my problem immediately.

I don't really have much advice beyond that. I've been out of the telecommunications game so long I don't even really know what's going on anymore. I've paid about $300 max total for phone service over the last 7 or 8 years or so.

Mostly just chores today. Got my gutters cleaned out and mowed the front lawn. Didn't feel like doing the back today.

I washed down the siding I took from behind the garage with some Dawn and a microfiber towel and then hosed it down.

It's still not a match to the stuff that was already up on that wall, but it does look a lot closer. I knew it would look better since there was so much "powder" on it while I was working with it, but I'm a little bummed that it's still lighter from being sun bleached.

Oh well. It blends well enough not to bother me until I get around to painting the whole house, maybe next year.

My neighbor across the street was raving about it to me today. She's had to look at the old bullshit for decades and is so happy how nice it looks now. And because the addition makes my house so much wider from the street, she says that it looks like I live in a mansion now.

I called up my other neighbor to let him know I haven't forgotten about a table he let me borrow and to check if he needs it back yet, and he told me that I probably just raised everybody's property value on the block.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Happy birthday. BRENDA!

Hope your lamb chop and chocolate cupcakes (I'm still thinking about those chocolate cupcakes... mmmmmm tasty!) make it festive. I also hope you had a great dinner out!

The lamb chops should be good and the cupcakes came out good. It's been quite a while since I made them. Dinner out was good too.

I ended up working all day on my friend's dad's landscaping before their party on my birthday. The day just hasn't really meant anything to me since my 21st B-Day.

They took me out for my first dinner in an actual restaurant in about 10 years though. I forgot how good real Italian food tasted. They ended up putting up the windows in my porch and we'll get the door in soon though, so that's better than pretty much all of my birthday presidents I've ever gotten in my life combined.

Glad you got some good food on your B-Day, Brenda.

Oh, I miss real Italian food Jack. I'm not suppose to eat pasta or cheese, so it very rare that I get that. I'm glad you enjoyed.

Yeah, I did.

Just got off the phone a bit ago with friends in Alberta. Had a nice long chat with them. They are all well which is good.

Even got a birthday message from a cousin who lives out there.

So, I am off to mah jong in the morning and I will see everyone tomorrow afternoon.

I was musing on the percent of US women who'll get breast cancer in their lifetime. For some reason I thought the figure was 1 in 10. But nah! I told myself. That's too high. So I looked it up. It's actually more than 1 in 10, it's almost 13% of all women.

https://www.cancer.gov/types/breast/risk-fact-sheet
Based on current incidence rates, 12.9% of women born in the United States today will develop breast cancer at some time during their lives.

No pasta or cheese!!!!

I probably shouldn't eat cheese either, since it doesn't agree with me anymore, but it's one of the few food sins I still indulge in.

I'm pretty much still gluten free, but I've always made exceptions for when I eat with other people. I just don't "cook" it for myself. The spaghetti, ravioli, mac and cheese and frozen pizzas that I'd make for myself was definitely not real Italian food.

But by not eating something much, you REALLY enjoy it on the rare occasions that you indulge.

I don't get the same level of enjoyment out of the rare soda, but every once in a while if I'm down by my brother's with my Dad I'll have one and it does taste about 10 times better than I remember it tasting when it was a staple of my diet.

Eggs in the pasta. I am allergic to eggs. Cheese it is what it is put into it to make it solid. I am allergic to that.

So, it is very, very rare that I eat egg pasta or real cheese. I indulge once in a while and it is so very good when I do. But it can on occasion backfire on me and I wind up being sorry for doing it. It happens.

I have no problem with wheat products, so when I buy pasta I make sure that it is eggless which means a lot of label reading. I rarely buy cheese, so I don't worry about it. I'll have it on a sandwich when I am out for lunch once in a while but that's about it.

I keep soda on hand around my place for a quick sugar boost but there again I am very careful in how much of it I drink.

Dry now after mah jong and lunch. Stopped and did a bit of grocery shopping before coming home.

I gave the lady I went out to supper with on Tuesday one of my cupcakes and I asked her how she liked it. She said it was very good and the next time I make them, I should give her another one.
