Ever on the lookout for recipes to add to the rotation, I tried a new one with great success!

This one was for turkey shepherd's pie. I'll add it to the recipe thread.

Well, the dry didn't last long as I had to take my umbrella with me. The sun is out now after 4pm. Crazy weather we got going on up here. Drivers still being warned about snow in the passes around BC.

Curious what you don't like about it, Brenda.

I kind of thought it was more of a "man" show, but I'm sure plenty of modern women enjoyed it.

It is quite the verbal assault on your ears, isn't it? I don't think I've ever seen another TV show with so much filth coming out of everyone's mouth. I think Timothy and the priest are the only ones who don't use cuss words as punctuation. Calamity Jane probably is even worse that Swerengin.

Finally rodded out my shower drain tonight. The idea of taking one more shower while standing in my own dirt wasn't appealing on a hot day like today. Got my A/C going today too after mowing the lawn, then went out and helped my buddy's dad again today.

Check engine light came back on, on my way home. As bad as that sounds, it was probably the 2nd best outcome tonight short of being able to pass. That thing hasn't come back on since I cleared the code back in summer of last year. Now I have something to show my mechanic. Maybe I just need the 2nd O2 sensor replaced. He did say that both of them were factory original and I was way past the due-date for new ones.

It was definitely a verbal assault. I never have. Timothy's character didn't swear hardly. Calamity Jane was bad and she definitely could give Swearegen a run for his money in that department.

I didn't think of it as a "man's" show or "woman's". It's hard to put into words. I found the first season more interesting then in the second to me the writing seemed to take a dip. I felt like bringing the before unseen Mr. Hearst in wasn't really necessary. They should have left him as a shadow figure. Or maybe he should could have stayed in the territory but not in Deadwood. He was used too much.

Also I felt like there should have been a bigger army presence in the camp as it was the 1870s and they were sitting smack in the middle of the Black Hills. More worry from the camp about the Indians even though the push to reservation was well under way.

2nd and 3rd seasons just felt off to me.

. Boy,could we use that water pipeline!

Did you know that central CA irrigates so much agricultural land that it actually increases rainfall in Colorado?

The weather here has been what I call roller- coaster: a few days over 85, then back to more seasonal temps. But dry, of course. Our rainy season is over.

*****

My last radiation treatment is tomorrow, woo hoo! Damn but they take a big chunk out of every day! A big chunk of energy, too. Looking forward to finally getting some time and energy back, altho I will still be getting infusions and followup with physical therapy to manage lymphedema (I was hoping to avoid it but, alas, no) and followup on my kidneys.

Still, except for tiredness after each treatment I feel pretty good. I have a long list of projects I'd like to start on next week (weather cooperating). Looking forward to that!

No, I didn't know that. Huh.

Ah, 85F. We will be lucky at the rate we are going in BC to see that come June. Right now the weather service is worried about all the snow that hasn't melted in the mountains which will mean Spring floods for a lot of places down from them.

Hooray! for the last treatment.

I remember my aunt complaining of the radiation making her tired too.

I hope you can make a start on them.

I wish I could comment more but I think it was mid 2000's or so when I watched it, so a lot of that has faded from my memory now.

So you've watched the whole show now then? I think there was just the 3 seasons.

I really liked Swerengen's turn in the 3rd season. The writing and acting put into that character and the way that they made me actually really like the guy by the end of the show has always stuck with me. If you've watched all the episodes, you know the one I'm talking about when I was talking about the most extreme thing I'd ever seen on a show, although being a lady you might not quite be able to empathize with it on the same level as me.

If/When you watch the movie, I'd love to hear your opinion on it.

I was not pleased with my mechanics reply on the phone. "Huh? Maybe you do have a bad Catalytic Converter?"

No thanks. Not interested in throwing up to $1000 more in parts only to fail anyhow. I'm working on some more alternative things that could be the culprit now and taking some rather extreme measures with it right now.

I'll report back on that if there's any good news.

Maybe I'll just blow up the car in a field one day and take a great video of it, letting everyone know how my perfectly functional car was nothing more than a 2.5 Ton paperweight because of ridiculous emissions laws and how I've been forced to waste $200 and two tanks of gas driving it around to try to clear codes when that was more I spent on gas so far just to do that than I spent on gas in the entire year of 2021.

I think that could go viral.

Well, not quite. I've haven't been able to find the first 3 discs of season 3 at my local library. I will keep an eye out for them.

Not sure if I really found Swearegen more likeable by the end of the show. There was just 3 seasons. But I did find it odd that it seemed to start with him and end with him, I think. I liked Doc truthfully. I was trying his best even when dealing with his own trauma from the Civil War.

I watched the movie as well. But again I'm not to sure about it either. Think I'm wrong. Ian McShane's character died at the end of the movie. I did like his interaction with Trixie and her baby.

I PASSED!!!!!!

I reset all the codes first thing this morning and didn't expect that EVAP monitor to clear for days but it did almost right away (which was super strange since I was running on fumes and the drive cycle says to have it at 1/4 to 3/4 of a tank of gas to get it to run).

O2 sensor monitory took a LOOOOOONG time though and I was worried I'd ruined it.

Took a break after filling up and getting all the monitors to clear except for the O2 and CAT monitors, then decided to work on something I had control over and mowed my lawn in the 90 degree sun.

After that, I went out for another drive but was feeling kind of defeated so I was going to call it a day. A mile from my house the CAT monitor still hadn't cleared. When I got inside my garage and put the car in park it was finally clear!!!!

Went right up to the emissions and got my car certified for the next two years.

So what was the trick this time?

I put 300 miles on my car at speeds between 70 and 95 miles per hour over the last two days with 2 gallons of lacquer thinner in a full tank of gas and ran her down to fumes before filling up this morning and doing my drive cycles.

As your mechanic, I do NOT recommend that you put lacquer thinner in your gas tank or drive 20 to 30 miles above the posted speed limit.

I think that maybe you missed quite a bit of character development for Swerengen if you didn't see the first half of season 3. :(

I'm not saying that he ever really changed or became a good guy, but I loved how their entire world was changing and a much bigger evil was coming into town and he was there to be a large part of the fight.

(You still might not have even seen the intense episode that I'm referring to either).

SPOILER ALERT!!!! I didn't know that Swerengen died in the movie.

Yeah, I am thinking I may have to put a hold on that part of the series.

Ah, yes. Statehood. Was the want of gold that got that ball rolling. I had to look up when that all happened for South Dakota.

Sorry SIX. I forgot that you haven't seen the movie. Let's say it looked like he died.

It is good. Now, I just need a reup on my prescription for it. I hate doing things over the telephone now with my hearing being so bad. But I think it will be alright. Just have to concentrate on what the doc is saying and get him to repeat himself if I can't hear him.

You know, Brenda. I guess I probably should apologize just for the fact that I didn't think about how close to home the topic of the show would be for you. Your ancestry certainly had a lot more to do with the events of that show, at least on the periphery than mine did. From anything I've ever heard about my family, I don't think any of us were here before WWI.

I guess in regards to to that, it's not as if they sugar coated anything or made most of the people in the show out to be great people. You're right about the Doctor. He was probably the only one who really was genuinely good.

It's been so long since I've seen it, so maybe I'm wrong, but I'm thinking that Timothy Olyphant's character was pretty subdued. I remember so many other characters in that show by name to this day, but I can't even remember what the sheriff's name was. I think that it was almost as if they had him play a bland character among all of these very powerful characters so he could be more of an Avatar for the person who was viewing the show rather than a real fleshed out character like he played in Justified. Maybe that's why I viewed it as more of a "Man's" show than a "Woman's" show?

Do you think I might be onto something there?

It is a shame that you couldn't see those early episodes of Season 3 though. I don't remember what you missed, but Deadwood certainly isn't the type of show where missing episodes is a good idea.

Is there any way that you could re-up your scrips online to avoid the hearing issues?

I feel sorry for your hearing loss. Mine is still pretty decent so far, but there will probably come a day where I really regret listening to all of that music in my car with speakers in the trunk that gave you a back massage. The dumb shit we do when we still think we'll live forever.

It's alright SIX. I was expecting a bigger Indian and army presence than there was being a show about the old West. There should have been more use and or reference to the Dakota and Lakota peoples than there was. That was why I mentioned the army. My direct ancestors, the Shoshoni were another territory over being in Montana. Which didn't achieve statehood until the 20th century. Think I read somewhere around 1922. I know Montana wasn't a state when my grandmother, her sisters and brother were born.

No there wasn't any sugar coating of things. Whores were called whores and the American west was a rough place and a lot of hard people. The men looking for gold and the settlers had to be tough if they were going to stay in the territories. I think the Doctor was a good man.

Since it's only been a few days since I've seen the movie Timothy Olyphant's character was called Seth Bullock but he did seem to be very subdued. Even though I think he was meant to be a more main character to the show.

I think you are on to something. At times it did seem as if you were seeing things through his eyes.

Like I said I can see about putting a hold on them. I'm fairly certain my main library can get a hold of them.

Nope, got to go through the doc for reups on prescriptions.

I almost lost my hearing as a child. Fluid build up in my left ear that had to be drained. I think though through my late 20s and 30s using head sets to listen to music that maybe I had turned up too loud is what did it. I was 51 when I noticed it was starting to go. When people were speaking too me, I was missing words or not hearing them right. Having to get people to repeat themselves.

Hearing aides are a big help but they can be awkward with a phone. I will get through with the doc even if I have to make him repeat himself.

I think the choice not to have much of an Indian presence was probably intentional, although I could never say how historically accurate it would have been. It was not a government sanctioned encampment and was made up almost entirely of Outlaws, and I'd imagine that even though the few characters they put the extreme focus on were obviously all criminals and probably didn't lose any sleep at all over murdering anyone who got in their way, I'm sure the camp was filled with dozens or even hundreds of people who were just as bad as they were. I just don't know how interested the native people would be to go anywhere near the encampment unless they had a death wish, especially considering the superior weaponry. Other than what I'm sure were some pretty raunchy verbal assaults about the natives, I don't recall there ever being talk of anybody in the encampment being interested in leaving it to start any trouble with the natives either (correct me if I'm wrong about that... It's been a LONG time since I watched it and I have forgotten a lot of details).

I'm sure that the process of making the Deadwood encampment was a bloody struggle on both sides before it was established, but by the time the show starts they were already built up enough to be able to safely house a doctor and a priest who likely had no real means of defending themselves and were brought in after everything was put together.

I'd be interested in watching a season or two of a prequel to Deadwood and how it was established.

As a rule, I don't usually apologize for things like cultural insensitivity, but that is on a footing of generalities and not on the personal level. I've always liked you as a person, Brenda, and I did feel bad that I didn't make that connection before recommending Deadwood to you so strongly, despite the fact that I probably really didn't give it any consideration simply because the almost complete lack of Native goings on in the show. Thanks for your understanding.

I don't know why, but I had to giggle when picturing your explanation of the toughness of the settlers in the 1800's and then just thinking about how American kids, teenagers and even quite a few adults behave themselves in videos on social media today. If these people made a trip to a newly discovered America today, I doubt many of them would have survived the boat trip from Europe, let alone surviving the trek through the wilderness to Montana. And who would build their encampments, their weapons, or plant their crops or tend the cattle?

Yeah... Thanks for confirming that. It's been so long, but I found it funny that even though I still think of Timothy's character as the "main" character of the show, there was so very little that I remembered about him. I really do think that his eyes were the window to the world of Deadwood.

That's not to say that the writing or acting of his character was bad or even inferior to that of all of the other rich characters in the show, but I do thing he was just designed to be that generally good person who had to make a lot of hard decisions, but never really did anything too extreme so the person watching could kind of place themselves in that character and just experience everything else going on around them.

Pretty impressive, really, to do that in a static form of media like a TV Show or a Movie, IMO. It's something that is regularly done in video games for the last 15 to 20 years, and sometimes it's done EXTREMELY well in that medium when they have some excellent writers. You often embody the main protagonist in these games and your character is the one who has no voice actor to speak your choices when conversations come up. The other characters are always talking to you, but your interaction back to them is the choice of multiple dialog trees that are written out on screen for you to voice yourself with the inner voice in your head that you hear when you read something.

The truly great stories in the video game medium are the ones where these choices that you make have immediate impact in the story and how other characters interact with you, but also how all the little things you do and say throughout the story have a greater impact on the entire world of the game. The hard choices are the best choices. I've read interviews of writers of some of these games and they view the biggest failures in their stories as the choices where 80 to 90% of people playing the game made one choice with only 10 or so % making the other choice. They want to see as close as possible to a 50/50 split on player choice or they feel that the choice they wrote into the story was not an interesting one and should have been left out. (They do actually keep track of all of these choices through the online capabilities of modern game machines)

Quote:

Like I said I can see about putting a hold on them. I'm fairly certain my main library can get a hold of them.

Yeah. I think after going through everything else you owe it to yourself to see those episodes. Especially since you didn't seem to really like the show but stuck it out to the end. I hope that it fills in some blanks for you, but I worry that the impact of things you saw at the end of the show won't really be there since you've seen them out of order.

Is it just your left ear that you have problems with now because of that, or you've lost the hearing in both ears?

My hearing is generally decent these days still, but I do notice that if there's a lot of other noise going on that voices sometimes aren't loud enough and I say "What?" a bit more frequently than I used to.

HOLY SHIT!!!!

Yeah, sorry, I mised this bc I was only skimming the Deadwood posts. (Never having watched it, I have no idea what it's about.)

WOO HOO!!!

Lacquer thinner, eh??? Some have acetone, some have toluene. Some have both. As chemist, I'm curious what YOURS contains. If it lists it, let me know!

You must have had some stubborn deposits in there somewhere that only a good solvent could clear. (That, or someone maliciously put sugar/motoroil/gunk in your gas tank.) Between the solvent and running it at hot temps, it sounds like you dissolved off and burned off whatever was fouling your system.

Great that you're legal again!

BOLO for the failure of rubber or plastic-type gaskets or fuel lines (carburetor seal, valve cover gasket, head gasket, etc) Old car/old components + aggressive solvent = component failure? Just a thought, prolly will not happen.

CONGRATS!!!!

Going back thru your posts about Deadwood, I see there's a lot of interesting discussion about it. So even tho I haven't watched the series, it certainly does seem engaging!

Interesting points about the (lack of) Native presence, and comparisons to video games (avatars and decision trees).

If you ever get the time, I feel it's a worthwhile watch. Not sure if Brenda would agree. Not in my top 10 shows or anything, but would probably pretty easily make the top 50.

I see that the brand I used has acetone. I see no mention of Toluene in the product explanation. I did see it stated that this product is not for sale in California.

Nobody put anything in there. You'd have to pry off and break the gas lid to get inside if the car was unlocked, and I never leave the car unlocked if it's not in my garage.

No... I'm afraid this was years of neglect and abuse on my part. As little as I did drive, I still put quite a few miles on that car when the old flex pipe was completely rusted out and was bellowing exhaust right under where I was sitting. I was driving to and from work even in the winter with the windows open just because I knew it was probably getting into the cabin from underneath.

I've always used the cheapest gas. I probably let the spark plugs go years longer than they should have gone without changing them that first time. I've never taken it to a shop for a tune up in the 14 years that I've owned it.

When I was leaking 1.5 quarts of oil on my 36 mile round trip to work, I was dumping off-brand 10w-40 by the caseload through it after hearing online that it was safe to put in old cars that require 10w-30 (and we all know how everything you ever read on the internet is true, right?)

I mean, honestly.... as much as I resent the Government for doing the emissions which disproportionately screw over the people who can't just afford to go out and buy a new car every 2 or 3 years, the amount of work that it's forced me to do on my car and all of the expensive cleaners I've put through the system that I never would have done on my own otherwise really have the car running a lot nicer than it has in years. Possibly even better than when I first got it back in 2008.

Now I won't be going out and putting premium in there every time I fill up... especially not now. But I think I will put 1 bottle of injector cleaner and one bottle of sea foam through it every 6 months from now on, and maybe once per year I'll use the Sea Foam spray right into the throttle body.

I did manage to get 25 quarts of Shell 10w30 oil at an EXTREMELY low price when it was on sale a month or so back, so I'll be able to change my oil quite a few times with much better oil than I'd been putting into it for the majority of my time owning it too.

I think I might also treat myself to a new interior and exterior door handle since I've had to really rig my car up stupidly to even get in and out of it for years after 80% of both of the handles snapped off.

Maybe I'll even get really crazy and see if a bottle of Freon/sealant might actually make my A/C that never worked operational again.

Maybe.

That was the idea, from the video that I watched. I'd seen that video two years ago when I was facing the same problem, but fortunately didn't need to resort to this at the time since simply having the mechanic weld the new flex pipe on after I cut the old one off and running some cleaning products through the system was enough to get the light off for about 1.5 years.

I got my first truly good night of sleep in about a month last night.

Had to look up what BOLO meant.

Yeah. That's why I was glad I didn't have to resort to it 2 years ago. Even though the video I'm talking about has millions of views, the guy says that he's been doing this with cars for 30 years, and the robust comment section is just flowing with hundreds upon hundreds of comments thanking him for saving them hundreds or even thousands of dollars, there are quite a few comments talking about how they just screwed up their car, and there are a lot of DIY sites that condemn this specific video saying that you're going to ruin all the gaskets and lines by running lacquer thinner through your car.

I'm hoping maybe since my car is so old that it was built a bit better than the newer ones were and that maybe doing something like this is only a death sentence for more modern cars.

I'll be on the lookout for anything strange happening and won't venture too far from home until I feel that everything is going to be alright. No leaks or odd behavior yet though.

IF not for sale in CA prolly contains toluene plus acetone plus some other sort of ketone (plus other stuff)

Toluene is a great solvent but also a smog promoter.

Nope, got to go through the doc for reups on prescriptions.

Bummer.

Quote:

I almost lost my hearing as a child. Fluid build up in my left ear that had to be drained. I think though through my late 20s and 30s using head sets to listen to music that maybe I had turned up too loud is what did it. I was 51 when I noticed it was starting to go. When people were speaking too me, I was missing words or not hearing them right. Having to get people to repeat themselves.

Is it just your left ear that you have problems with now because of that, or you've lost the hearing in both ears?

My hearing is generally decent these days still, but I do notice that if there's a lot of other noise going on that voices sometimes aren't loud enough and I say "What?" a bit more frequently than I used to.

Hearing aides are a big help but they can be awkward with a phone. I will get through with the doc even if I have to make him repeat himself.

Hopefully he's at least as good as Doc on Deadwood.

Looking at the lack of Indian presence it was intentional. They wanted to focus on the town itself. So any mention of Indians was background. The thing I come back to is those "Hills" they keep talking about are the Black Hills. Well known Dakota territory even back then. Which brings me back to the army again. It wasn't just the settlers coming into the territories at that time that wanted the army. The prospectors wanted the army too. Especially to save their hides when they ticked off the local Native populations. Well, by then the Natives were well acquainted with whiskey, so it is possible that some were so addicted that they could have hung out on the fringes looking to buy or trade for a bottle or two. But yes, most would have stayed away from a place like Deadwood, I think.

Outside of the first season when the little girl that Mrs. Garret took in and in season 2 when the newspaper ran a story on the Little Big Horn there was nothing. The story just got Swearegen talking about Custer getting himself killed with a few curse words. And a few curse words in the first season too after the family of the girl was killed. I don't remember any Indians in the camp.

Personally, I think the doc and the minister were driven west trying to escape their own demons. I mean we saw how doc suffered from what today would be PTSD from the civil war and the minister may have started out west to want to convert the Indians but got stuck in Deadwood. Settlements of any kind in the old west took a lot of hard work and were usually started it seems to me by drifters or fur traders or once as I said gold was found prospectors.

Actually, I agree with you on a prequel. That would be really interesting.

It's okay. You went into the series not looking for that interaction while I went into it looking for that interaction just because it is the old west and territories. Western expansion was almost at its height during the late 1870s, as I also said the push to reservations was well on. Gold was being found, hence the push for statehood from South Dakota though I made a mistake about Montana. It too became a state in 1889 just a few days after South Dakota. Mine, the Cheyenne, Lakota, Dakota and Arapaho were all on reserve by then. My figuring makes my grandmother's birth year as 1885 because I was told that she was 18 when she married in 1903. But I'm not sure where that puts her in the birth order with her sisters and brother.

Well, in coming to the Americas manys an Irishman, woman and child didn't survive the boat trip. Those that made it here from all over the European world at the time if they didn't toughen up and learn wound up dead through their own mistakes or they tucked their tails between their legs and headed back for more civilized climates in the east.

Seth's character did have a deputy and he was called a deputy. I do believe it was Charlie Utter.

Timothy's character did seem to exist in the middle of the chaos that went around him. From his hardware store to becoming Sheriff because he had some experience in that department.

I've never played those kinds of video games. I stuck mostly to the simple ones and now with my seizure disorder those things aren't the greatest for me.

Went into my library today to look for the first discs. No go, so I had a hold put on them. Not sure when I will get them as the librarian said there is a note saying they need to fixed. It doesn't say what the exact problem is with them. So it is wait and see. I should be able to puzzle out what is going on.

It is the way of things medical wise in BC.

My left ear is the worst. You know a joke about a line on a piece of paper then it goes off the paper onto a table then off the table and on to the floor. That is the hearing in my left ear. Almost gone. The right has just started taking a dip in the last year or so. Nothing major.

Like I said he's new. So, I am trying to get a handle on dealing with him and the staff in his office. I can actually say that I miss my old doc.

Interesting points about the (lack of) Native presence, and comparisons to video games (avatars and decision trees).

My brother in-law served in the Navy and hubby was head mechanic is several motorcycle shops. If I hear anything inventive I'll probably just laugh. But thanks for the heads up!

In that case you won't hear anything inventive but I thought a warning was due. Just because there is a lot of it.

Pulled all the weeds that got out of control during the cold/rainy weather, while I was sick and while I was spending all the time on the car.

Didn't have enough time to drop the bug poison with the spreader, but I at least got the perimeter of the house and garage sprayed. Busy week coming up, so that will buy me some time until I can get the proper poison down.

TONS of ants this year, it seems. Not in my house, but on the perimeter. At least it appears that the mole didn't come back though. I won't be sure until I do some real poking around the foundation, but nothing glaring on the surface anyhow.

Shame on me for not getting around to all of this until now. I've got to have all the poison dropped by mid April or I'm really playing catch up.

Same here! But... when were you sick? Seems like you've been out and about helping lots of people, not really slowing down all that much!

Today was still a little warmish so I spent a few hours getting all the film recycling ready, sorting mail, disposing/recycling boxes/packages. That's dear daughter's job but she's been slipping on that. The house looks a lot tidier now, that's a plus.

Tomorrow and for the rest of the week I'm going to weed-whack the front yard. I won't get veggies in until June. That's the latest I've ever planted, but ... it is what it is. I can't make it go faster or turn back the clock! Just move forward and see how it turns out.

Hope your Sunday was enjoyable.
