NATO exercises sweep Europe amid Russian escalation, rising tensions between Moscow and US

Moving past the fallen guards, an American voice - among the mix of men speaking accented English -- shouted at two others in a car: "Get out! Hurry up, hurry up."

The team of US Navy SEALs, along with Romanian and Spanish Special Forces, quickly and quietly worked their way through the warehouse, firing on enemy fighters and, when possible, taking them prisoner.

When the operation was done, the assaulting team -- whose ammunition had consisted of plastic projectiles and paint rounds -- was told by an instructor they had passed the course and to get back in position to run it again.

Exclusive access
The SEALs, from Virginia Beach, are in Romania this month as part of a contingent of American special forces taking part in the "Trojan Footprint" military exercises across five Eastern European countries that involve 600 NATO and non-NATO forces, including troops from Ukraine and Georgia, which have both been invaded by Russia in recent years. The training is taking place alongside this month's much larger Defender-Europe 21 NATO joint exercises, which have some 28,000 forces participating from 26 different countries.

Both sets of military training exercises, while long-planned, follow a series of aggressive Russian military moves across Europe.

CNN was given exclusive access to see the American special forces - the SEALs and US Army's Green Berets - exercise in Romania and North Macedonia over several days. In central Romania, the Green Berets fast roped and rappelled down from helicopters alongside Ukrainian and Romanian soldiers before blasting and shooting their way into a makeshift house.

In North Macedonia, American special air tactics airmen taught local troops how to call in targets for an AC-130 plane that was firing on a distant ridgeline, the Macedonians carefully annunciating the coordinates in halting English.

One salvo, called in by an American officer, was significantly off target, appearing to be the result of a misunderstanding between the ground and air forces: A potentially deadly mistake that spoke to why live fire training is so vital.

The annual exercises were canceled last year during the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic and while they are over a year in the making, it is lost on no one that they coincide with a dramatic escalation of tension between Russia and the West.

"We have to be strong and supportive of our allies when there is a threat," said David Muniz, the most senior US diplomat in Romania who serves as the embassy's chargé d'affaires. "When we are strong, when we are united, it has a real chilling effect, shall we say, on the kinds of things that can happen."

"In this way, you cut down on the chance for mischief," he added, shortly before American paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division poured out of transport planes over a Romanian airfield in Boboc.

While some Russian forces have recently pulled back from their deployment to the border with Ukraine, Russia's navy has also carried out exercises in the Black Sea, challenged Ukrainian Coast Guard vessels in the same waters and closed down parts of the small sea around the Crimean peninsula, which Moscow invaded and annexed in 2014.

Few diplomatic or military officials -- American or otherwise - wanted to speak specifically about the Russian threat though several privately admitted there's no doubt it is hanging over these exercises.

"It's just showing everybody that we have a capability and we can use it when necessary," said Major General Joe Jarrard, the deputy commander of the US Army in Europe and Africa, downplaying the significance of the timing of the exercises. "We're going to continue to develop our readiness and the interoperability between all of the allies and partners and so that's what we're continuing to focus on."

The head of Romania's special forces, which copied much from the Americans during the development of their forces, admitted that the Russian maneuvers not far from their coastline in the Black Sea are unsettling.

"They should be of concern for us," said Lieutenant General Daniel Petrescu. "Our job is to train harder and harder and be prepared for everything."

Since April, the US has sanctioned Russia for its interference in the 2020 election, the SolarWinds hack and the poisoning of activist Alexey Navalny. The two sides have expelled a number of each other's diplomats. Ahead of a proposed summit between Presidents Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin in June, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken traveled to Ukraine, where he cautioned that Russia could reverse a recent withdrawal of some of the tens of thousands of troops that had amassed along the border with Ukraine.

"Russia has the capacity on fairly short notice to take aggressive action if it so chooses, and so we are watching this very, very carefully," Blinken said in a May 6 press conference with Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelensky.

"We discussed in some detail the support that we're providing, we'll continue to provide to Ukraine to continue to strengthen its security, its defenses," Blinken said.

From the Black Sea, Russia could also launch an attack on Ukraine's mainland, the former commander of NATO, James Stavridis wrote in a recent column.

"The objective would be to neutralize the Ukrainian naval forces, gain complete sea control in the northern Black Sea, cut off Ukrainian military forces from their supply lines, and obtain dominance over a section of land that could connect Russia with Crimea," Stavridis wrote.

Last month, the Pentagon scratched plans to send two destroyers into the Black Sea but the US Coast Guard has sent the Hamilton cutter, which the Navy's 6th Fleet said was there "to support NATO allies and partners." It has been photographed being shadowed by a Russian patrol vessel.

A Russian attack on Ukraine would not necessarily compel the US and the rest of NATO to intervene, since it is not part of the alliance. NATO did not respond militarily to Russia's annexation of Crimea but has refused to recognize it as Russian territory.

A big part of the aim of the NATO exercises now, beyond sending a message to Russia and others, is simply at a tactical level: should the allies and partners need to join a fight together, they know how to work alongside each other and cross-pollinate with other countries' equipment.

"It's just to build that knowledge with each other," said a Green Beret operator who CNN wasn't allowed to identify. "It shows that we're willing to learn from each other. It is important, significant, whatever's going on around the world."

Russians brought 100,000-200,000 troops plus heavy equipment (tanks, artillery, fighter-bombers) to their border with Ukraine.

NATO:The elephant labored, and brought forth a nouse. 28,000 troops; language barriers, snarled logistics, and poor integration.

There is a Russian making up fake stories condemning America while writing under a pseudonym to protect his fake identity. Meanwhile, there are real stories from actual Americans using their real names, working with a staff of real reporters, for a real company that can really be sued for lying. On the other hand, it is pretty much impossible to arrest or sue or even find a real street address for Russians, which pretty much explains why Russians say and do whatever pleases themselves and/or Putin.

Russian Aerospace Forces get a new radar that could strip US military of its trump card

The Russian armed forces have recently accepted into service the Yenisei radar detector, which has exceptional tactical and technical capabilities and can be used as part of both the S-400 and S-500 air-defense missile systems.

According to a high-ranking source in the Russian military-industrial service, the new radar was put into service in late April.

The Yenisei system can operate non-stop during extended periods of time, which is a very important aspect of radar reconnaissance. And there is basically no room for human error as it is fully automated.

The system is a completely digital radar with an active phased-array antenna. It’s an active-passive radar that can conduct reconnaissance, detect aircraft and designate targets for air defense weapons without going live. In other words, Yenisei is capable of conducting radio surveillance.

Yenisei, for instance, can send information about targets to the multifunctional radars of the S-400 and S-500 missile systems. The S-500 Prometheus systems are expected to be introduced into service this year, because all the components of the system are ready. As for the S-400 Triumph, Yenisei (along with the 96L6 all-altitude target detector) has already been included in the system.

The Yenisei radar is equipped with remote-control stations, which allows it to effectively deal with jamming. For instance, the US Air Force has been so successful in many local conflicts because in almost every case, the air-defense systems employed by America’s opponents were neutralized by powerful and well-organized jamming systems.

They wouldn’t derail the Yenisei though. That’s because it traces and assigns targets with higher precision when countering powerful jamming. It is safe to assume that by accepting Yenisei into service, the Russian Aerospace Forces have removed the Americans’ tactical advantage.

Another key Yenisei feature is its sector-scanning capabilities (most radars can only do circular scans). This makes it possible for the radar to trace and assign ballistic missiles.

Commanders of the Antiaircraft Missile Troops of the Russian Aerospace Forces are very interested in the Yenisei and see a lot of potential in its features. For example, the S-400 command and control center is equipped with the 91N6E panoramic radar detection system.

But it’s Yenisei’s continuous and lasting sector-scanning that will significantly improve the efficiency of air and missile defense, addressing ballistic missile threats in the most dangerous zones. That’s why the S-400 command and control centers are going to be equipped with two radars – the regular 91N6E radar and the Yenisei.

The Yenisei can also trace its own guided anti-aircraft missiles after launch and accurately detect whether or not the target is hit.

Capable of target assignment for hypersonic targets, the Yenisei has another notable feature. For example, an Iskander-M missile first rises to a high altitude of about 100km and then starts intensive maneuvering going down, which makes intercepting it almost impossible. Approaching its target, the Iskander-M releases decoys, which renders enemy radar systems completely useless: there are so many false targets on the screen that there is no way to effectively deploy any air defense missile systems. The US so far has failed to come up with a way to successfully counter this.

The Yenisei, on the contrary, is capable of detecting such targets, can trace them and provide accurate target assignment.

Moreover, it is effective against so-called “radar angels.” These meteorological phenomena normally occur over water surfaces and blank out portions of the screen by appearing as a large number of false targets on both surveillance radars and missile guidance radars.

In addition, the Yenisei has built-in IFF interrogators and transponders, both the Russian Strazh system and the NATO Mk XII, and the latter may be of interest to foreign buyers. The new Russian radar has a secondary channel to operate within the joint air traffic management system in the range of 1030-1090 MHz, which means it has all the information about civil aircraft in the air space at a particular moment.

The system is very mobile, with a setup/teardown time of under five minutes. For better mobility, it has no outriggers, unlike the 96L6 all-altitude surveillance radar. Of course, the mechanical “paws” to level the system are still there, but they are extended straight into the tracks and not on the sides.

All in all, the Yenisei system is capable of detecting air targets flying over 100 km above ground (basically at the boundary between the Earth's atmosphere and outer space) and more than 600 km away. It guarantees continued tracing. It is a versatile system that accurately detects air targets and designates them for air-defense weapons

Some "disaster"!

The Army Reveals the Range of Its New Hypersonic Weapon: 1,725 Miles

The U.S. Army has a new hypersonic weapon that's designed to fly 17 times the speed of sound. Now, we know the weapon will be able to strike targets from at least 1,725 miles away, according to an Army spokesperson's recent comments.

That means the "Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon" (LRHW) is capable of destroying enemy targets from faraway, standoff ranges. With that kind of armament, U.S. forces could easily strike targets in Russia and China during a conflict—a deterrent that ideally makes such conflict less likely.

It's likely the Army's LRHW has a similar range to the Navy's Conventional Prompt Strike Weapon, according to Breaking Defense, which broke the news of the LHRW's range. The two weapons, after all, share many of the same components. Last October, National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien said the Navy will deploy the new hypersonic weapons on all 69 of its guided missile destroyers.

While Beijing wouldn't normally be the target of a tactical missile system, this example illustrates China's dilemma, and shows the real muscle behind the hypersonic weapon. Russia is no safer from the LRHW than China, for example. From Europe—let's say London—the LRHW could strike targets as far east as Moscow.

Putin’s Chinese Yoke

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has a problem. Western liberal ideas, such as limited government and rule of law, have begun to spread among his subjects. These concepts are wholly antithetical to his regime, whose purpose is to make use of unlimited state power to enrich its rulers. In order to maintain his grip, Putin needs to cut his country off from the West — and he is doing so.

But Russia’s economy is far too small to be an autarchy. If it is not to be linked with the West, Russia must become part of the East. Accordingly, the Putin regime is moving fast to cement an economic and military alliance with China.

Yet the Russians need to think long and hard about the implications of this. An alliance between Russia and China cannot be a marriage of equals. China’s population of 1.44 billion people outnumbers Russia’s ten to one, and its $14.86 trillion GDP is ten times greater as well.

From the Chinese point of view, Russia is simply a vast vacant territory, rich in natural resources, but essentially unpopulated and undeveloped. Indeed, Russia has twice as much land, which the Chinese certainly believe they can put to much more productive use.

The crooks who currently own it can be bought out at a price that would hardly dent Beijing’s petty-cash account. In fact, China has already begun moving in this direction, making deals that give it control of the economy of Iran and other stops along its New Silk Road. But if China really wants to dominate the world, acquiring Russia is the way to go. Beijing could triple its territory, recreating an empire unmatched in size since the time of the Mongol Khans, 700 years ago.

Perhaps we need a thread, Putin sells russia to china. Too funny...

Poor signym, she posts a propaganda video to make her point. That Putins' russia is able to bully not just the US but Britain as well. Good luck with that comrade. And comrade kiki cannot think of anything to say to defend Putin against what's posted in this thread so she can only nonsensically repeat herself. Too funny; time for her to ask her handler for assistance.

Well, we all know that you post lies, THUGR. So, is what I posted TRUE? Did Britain decide to deploy its destroyer in the Black Sea, or did it reverse itself?

I'll bet you're too afraid to find out for sure because you're NOT all about "facts", you're all about telling yourself stories that you like, because they soothe your excited fears.

Its not for me to disprove anything you post that didn't come from a reputable news source. When will you learn that? Are you capable of learning that comrade?

A British patrol boat has entered the Black Sea. But in looking over the news to find out WHEN a British destroyer and/or frigate are due to enter the Black Sea, I find no updates after the initial announcements over a month ago.

There is a deployment of a British aircraft carrier group in the eastern Mediterranean, so if another ship is to split off for the Black Sea it should have done so already or will do so soon.

If it doesn't happen in a week or two, it's not going to happen.

Royal Navy offshore patrol vessel HMS Trent entered the Black Sea on Sunday as part of its Mediterranean Sea deployment which started in April this year.

Trent transited the Bosphorus Strait for a port visit to the Ukrainian port city Odessa, and can stay in the Black Sea for a maximum 21 days, as stipulated by the Montreux Convention.

As soon as the OPV entered the region, Russian news reports said Russia had dispatched Black Sea Fleet naval assets to monitor the Royal Navy ship. Earlier this month, a French patrol ship was also tracked by the Russian military in the Black Sea.

THUGR, you DO know the difference between a destroyer and a patrol boat, right? One has heavy machine guns and a cannon, the other has missiles. The original announcement was

Quote:

One destroyer armed with anti-aircraft missiles will head to the Black Sea from the Mediterranean alongside an anti-submarine frigate, according to the report.

F-35B stealth jets and submarine-hunting helicopters from carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth are to stand ready to support the two vessels in the Black Sea if there is any threat from Russian forces, although the U.K. aircraft carrier must stay in the Mediterranean due to an international treaty that forbids carriers from entering the Black Sea, the Times said.

“The U.K. and our international allies are unwavering in our support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” a Ministry of Defence spokesman told the newspaper.

The United States never confirmed they were going to the Black Sea as you claimed. Nor did Britain confirm they were sending a destroyer. You posted a propaganda video. I hate, really? No sooner than I found this site I watched as some here did nothing but show abhorrence for America. This is bad that is bad with every post. It remains that way in all the endless threads they’ve created so far. I also noticed they kept defending Putin, Russia and its allies. As few as they are.

Who was that? It was you and Signym. Think back asshole. I’m the one who tagged you and Signym as being Russian sympathizers. Russian collaborators who always posted Putin’s talking points as fast as they appeared on the internet. Posted all his approved bullshit propaganda and lies. I watched as you, full of bile, directed endless lies and loathing towards Americans, all Americans. I watched as you defended the inexcusable, Trump, Putin collaboration. If you are not Putin sympathizers then why do you two always attack those who post about him?

No Polish Russian Collaborator 1kiki, you’re the hater here. It’s easy to see because each of your posts resembles the last. A sentence or two trashing those you are focused on. Sentences containing all caps and different fonts. I hate, read those posts. Look at your and Sigmym’s signatures.

All anyone need do is check you out to see your posts are without virtue. I've flipped what you and signym have tried to do, bash America on it's head. It's all about Trump and Putin now. Your response to that shows me I've struck a nerve.

Time has shown you cannot deflect away or defend against the truth. In this thread or any other.
