Since I know there'll be a July 4th thread (it's like a requirement on all English-speaking web-boards), I'll get to work now to offset it.

Yeah. July 1st. Canada Day. Um, yay?

Canada Day - July 1
Quote:

Canada Day is Canada's national holiday. It is celebrated on July 1.

It celebrates the creation of a Canadian Confederation through the British North America Act, which was proclaimed in force effective on July 1, 1867, uniting the Province of Canada (Ontario and Quebec) with Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

The holiday itself was formally established in 1879 and was originally called Dominion Day. The name was changed to Canada Day on October 27, 1982.

It is a mandatory holiday across Canada for all federal institutions. It is also celebrated by all provincial governments and businesses across Canada. The Quebec provincial government formerly refused to recognize the celebration.

British North America Act:
Quote:

The British North America Acts (1867-1975) are a series of acts of the British Parliament dealing with the government of Canada. The first and most important act of the series was passed in 1867, and created the self-governing Dominion of Canada. Canada and the other British dominions achieved full legislative sovereignty with the passage of the Statute of Westminster 1931, but prior to 1982 the British America Acts were excluded from the operation of the Statute of Westminster and could only be amended by the British Parliament.

In 1982 Canada patriated its constitution and entrenched within it the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. By the Canada Act 1982, the British Parliament, acting at and with the request and consent of Canada, enacted the Constitution Act 1982, which established a procedure for the amendment of the Canadian constitution by the Canadian Parliament. The British North America Acts 1867-1975 were renamed Constitution Acts, and together with the Constitution Act 1982 are now collectively known as the Constitution Acts 1867-1982. These and other acts form the Constitution of Canada.

The different acts of the series are distinguished by appending the year of their enactment. BNA acts were passed in 1867, 1871, 1886, 1907, 1915, 1916*, 1940, 1943*, 1946*, 1949, 1949 (No. 2)*, 1951*, 1952*, 1960, 1964, 1965, 1974 and 1975. Those marked with (*) have been repealed.

And with that:

Sigma- Hiya! Greetings to you and the Missus and congrats on your reunion!

I'm in the Mountain View area about 40mins south of Berk. I've been here for about ten years now and really enjoy the place, although I'm leaving my job within the next few months and moving further south. (My life needed a little shaking up as it were and I've started blogging on this site if you want details.)

Thanks for the kind thoughts and the Molson (I'll never know why they make it watery down here. )

Again, Manny happy returns to you and your wife wherever in Canada you may be and I hope you truly enjoy the day.

-Gabe
