This is called:

OUT WITH THE OLD SWAMP; IN WITH THE NEW SWAMP (I actually gave a thought to making this a new thread).

His cabinet choices is a veritable Who's Who of corrupt and "crooked" bottom-feeders with proven track records of greed and avarice. Fucking nasty motherfuckers every single one. He even tapped Tom Price, who used an old Tom Delay scam - defrauding doctors throughout the country with a fake award
of medical excellence that he asked the doctors to pay for (a scam that raised millions for the RNC). Price is such a scumbag that he recycled that little scam to con doctors across the country to "donate" millions in "fees."

Long Live The Swamp!!!

Trump's choice of Tom Price for Health and Human Services probably means the death of Obamacare. Never mind the supposed replacement; it will be a bust. So here’s the question: how many people just shot themselves in the face?

Around 5 1/2 million Trump chumps. It’s likely to be in the ballpark. And it’s pretty awesome.

Good news! TRUMP IS UNLIKELY TO RESUME TORTURE:

www.nytimes.com/2016/11/28/us/politics/trump-waterboarding-torture.htm
l

The New York Times reports that experts believe the obstacles to resuming waterboarding are probably too difficult to overcome:

Federal law, international pressure and resistance from inside the C.I.A. stand in his way. Dozens of prisoners developed persistent psychological problems after enduring torture … In authorizing waterboarding … government lawyers reasoned that there would be no lasting damage to prisoners, a key factor in concluding the tactics did not qualify as torture. That argument would be difficult to make now. www.nytimes.com/2016/10/09/world/cia-torture-guantanamo-bay.html

Of course, this presumes that Trump cares about those things known as “facts,” “laws” and “arguments.”

The new Trump International Hotel in Washington DC is a ticking time bomb for Donald Trump. Trump’s inauguration will immediately place him in violation of the law because the hotel is in the Old Post Office Pavilion, leased to Trump by the federal government.

The lease is managed by the government’s General Services Administration. Trump will in effect become his own landlord, giving rise to immediate questions about whether the government’s handling of the $180 million lease is for the benefit of the public or the president.

The lease, signed by Trump’s organization in 2013, includes a clause that says:
Quote:

37.19 Interested Parties.

No member or delegate to Congress, or elected official of the Government of the United States or the Government of the District of Columbia, shall be admitted to any share or part of this Lease, or to any benefit that may arise therefrom; provided, however, that this provision shall not be construed as extending to any Person who may be a shareholder or other beneficial owner of any publicly held corporation or other entity, if this Lease is for the general benefit of such corporation or other entity.

Even if the business is passed on to Trump’s children, as the president-elect has occasionally suggested he might do, the conflicts would remain.

Trump would be in breach of the contract, and the GSA must take steps to terminate the contract if Trump will not divest himself and his family from the project. If there is no way to reach a negotiated outcome, the GSA will need to terminate the lease and can expect to defend its decision in court from the typically litigious Trump.

The Old Post Office lease is a particularly complicated and, for GSA, rather unusual, 60-year agreement that requires significant annual disclosure of detailed financial information. These extensive disclosures are followed by negotiations over escalation of the rent and any other payments that the Trump Organization must pay to the government. Just imagine GSA pressing the Trump organization for more detailed revenue and expense information, or the President’s children negotiating annual rent adjustments with a career civil servant who reports to the GSA administrator appointed by their father, who serves at his pleasure. Any reasonable person would worry about the undue pressures and the inherent risk of favoritism that the government might show to such a well-connected contractor.

Trump can be beaten by talking about issues, not by talking about Trump’s personality.

Trump is now pursuing a very recognizable version of the GOP’s partisan agenda. Trump has indicated his desire to implement:

1) Repeal of the Affordable Care Act, stripping health insurance away from millions while reducing taxes on the wealthy
2) Large additional tax cuts geared primarily to the wealthy
3) A massive rollback of social safety net programs aimed at low-income households
4) A massive rollback of air pollution and climate change regulations
5) A sharp reduction in Wall Street regulation
6) Overturning Roe v. Wade

These are all big things that are politically difficult to accomplish. But the results of the 2016 election give the Republican Party a chance to implement most of them. That’s a rare and valuable political opportunity that the GOP’s elected officials have decided they would like to seize.

These normal, blandly partisan parts of Trump’s agenda are also among the least popular. And yet Trump’s support for them is what immunizes him from Republican Congress criticism and oversight over Trump’s abnormal stuff.

As long as Trump is enjoying the lockstep support of congressional Republicans, his opponents need to find ways to turn attention away from the Trump Show and focus it on his basic policy agenda and the ways in which it touches millions of people.

Alongside the wacky tweets and personal feuds, Trump is pursuing a policy agenda whose implications are overwhelmingly favorable to rich people and business owners. His opponents need to talk about this policy agenda, and they need to develop their own alternative agenda and make the case that it will better serve the needs of average people. And to do that, they need to get out of the habit of being reflexively baited into tweet-based arguments that happen on the terrain of Trump’s choosing and serve to endlessly reinscribe the narrative of a champion of the working class surrounded by media vipers.

Bernie believes Trump's latest tweets are a signal to Republican leaders to suppress the vote.

For Sanders, it was a question of priorities for the president-elect.

“Let’s see, we have massive income and wealth inequality, we have 43 million people living in poverty, we have to deal with climate change, which is threatening the existence of the planet, and he’s talking about three people who might burn the American flag?” the senator asked incredulously.

Trump voters tell CNN that California 'allows' illegal voting.
By the way, that is not true.

What Trump voters are doing is called "Deluding Yourself". For an example that is not political: according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more Americans than ever are overweight. But according to some new Gallup data, far fewer of us actually think we're overweight.

In recent years, the gap between how fat we think we are and how fat we are is wider than it's ever been. I believe the gap between opinion and reality will get worse.

"Munchikin" (as I call him) is a Snidely Whiplash-type evil troll of a villain who's company, One West Bank, foreclosed on 36,000 people. The Sleaze. Not only that, he's advised corporations to reduce their liability by reducing their workforce because, get this, payroll is the biggest negative of any company.

He says the workers could be replaced by cheaper labor with no unions and automation. This is Trump's pick, this after campaigning that he's for the average American worker. What a crock! But, of course, we all know the truth, that Trump is the biggest scam artist on the planet. Nothing that comes out of his mouth has a shred of truth in it.

For all those out of work white supremacists - there you have it! Your fearless leader. Hail Trump!

Trump Treasury Choice Steven Mnuchin Vows to ‘Strip Back’ Dodd-Frank
Volcker Rule seen as ‘too complicated’ and difficult to interpret, nominee says

"WASHINGTON—Donald Trump’s choice for Treasury secretary said Wednesday that he would focus on rolling back parts of the landmark 2010 Dodd-Frank financial overhaul law enacted in the wake of the financial crisis.

“The number one problem with Dodd-Frank is that it’s way too complicated and cuts back lending,” hedge-fund manager Steven Mnuchin told CNBC in his first public comments since being tapped by the president-elect to head his economic team.

“So we want to strip back parts of Dodd-Frank and that will be the number one priority on the regulatory side,” Mr. Mnuchin said, according to a rush transcript of the interview.

President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to dismantle Dodd-Frank, but a full repeal of the financial regulation law is unlikely without 60 votes in the Senate. Instead, the GOP might weaken the law without tearing it up. WSJ's Shelby Holliday reports.

Mr. Mnuchin’s comments are consistent with those made by Mr. Trump and other advisers. But they are significant since he himself has said little on publicly about policy matters, and his Wednesday remarks offer a fresh window into his thinking and priorities.

Mr. Mnuchin, a former Goldman Sachs Group Inc. executive, singled out the Volcker Rule provision in the law—named after former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker—which is aimed at trying to stop banks from betting with deposit-insured funds. Goldman and other Wall Street firms have complained that the rule is too opaque and complex.

“The number one problem with the Volcker rule is it’s way too complicated and people don’t know how to interpret it,” Mr. Mnuchin said. “So we’re going to look at what do with it, as we are with all of Dodd-Frank.”

In the interview, Mr. Mnuchin alluded to his crisis-era foray into the banking industry, when he was part of a group that bought the failed IndyMac Bank from the government. He became chairman of the renamed OneWest Bank in Los Angeles, which eventually was sold to CIT Group Inc. He currently sits on CIT’s board.

“We’ve been in the business of regional banking and we understand what it is to make loans,” he said. “That’s the engine of growth to small- and medium-size businesses.”

Regional banks in particular have been lobbying for relief from Dodd-Frank."

It will be fun to see ASTIGMATISM lie and do her contort and deny and deflect dance concerning this guy. "He's a reformed Banker!" "Banks provide JOBS (for bankers)!"

I saw a recent report where Trump listed, on a government website, all his properties around the world. In other words, he was advertising his personal wealth on a public website, paid for with our tax dollars, to enrich himself further.

Conflict of interest - we passed that exit a while ago, right after "Rigged Elections."

For all the stunning revelations we’ve seen about Donald Trump and his global business interests since the election, the larger and more troubling issue is what we don’t know. A magisterial six-byline New York Times investigation found 20 countries around the world where Trump does business, and both the US and foreign governments are already talking about the intermingling of public and private interests.
www.nytimes.com/2016/11/26/us/politics/donald-trump-international-busi

But the most important line in the piece by far is an observation that’s not directly tied to any of that excellent reporting from around the world: “The true extent of Mr. Trump’s global financial entanglements is unclear, since he has refused to release his tax returns and has not made public a list of his lenders.”

To put it even more plainly: We have absolutely no idea what Trump owns, who his business partners are, who is paying him, or whom he owes money to. Trump’s main line of business in recent years has been licensing the Trump name to various developments, so there is a certain obvious connection between the various buildings in various cities named Trump Tower and the Trump Organization. In general, Trump likes to name things after himself, so as a rule, “if Trump is involved, the thing will be named Trump” has been a pretty good guideline. But obviously Trump is not actually legally required to name everything he’s involved with after himself.

And thanks to his failure to do any kind of meaningful financial transparency, the basic reality is we’re not really sure what he owns and we won’t be sure how his family’s investment portfolio shifts over the years. The truly scary thing, in other words, isn’t the conflicts of interest we can see. It’s all the conflicts — and, conceivably, bribes, insider trading, and other illicit activity — that we can’t see.

Trump Saves Jobs in Indiana - Renegotiates Carrier Deal

A Carrier Worker Asks - What About Us?

Apparently Carrier is still closing down 2 plants in Indiana and permanently
moving 1300 jobs out of the country to Mexico. But, isn't that a good thing?
Carrier is doing what Congress never had the balls to do...affect change regarding immigration. If you can't bring the illegals to the mountain, bring the mountain to the illegals.

Carrier is saving us a shitload of money too. Now we don't need the Wall.
Come to think of it, we won't need the Immigration Police either. Thanks Carrier! True Patriots saving U.S. tax payers loads of cash. Too bad that we can't say the same for the Indiana tax payer. Trump got Indiana governor Pence to throw cash, something he said he would never do, at the problem.
$7 Million smackers to Carrier to save 800 jobs, about a third of the workforce. Ahhh, the Art of The Deal.

Russia Complains That Ukraine Interfered With Its Interference in the American Election

This is insane:

A top Russian official is accusing the Ukrainian government of undermining Donald Trump’s presidential campaign by trashing him on social media and disseminating dirt on one of his close associates.

....“Ukraine seriously complicated the work of Trump’s election campaign headquarters by planting information according to which Paul Manafort, Trump’s campaign chairman, allegedly accepted money from Ukrainian oligarchs,” Maria Zakharova said at a press briefing....The renewed scrutiny of Manafort’s dealings in Ukraine comes at an awkward time for the veteran operative and for Trump.

WTF? Russia is publicly complaining that another country took sides against it in an American election? Aren't they even pretending anymore that they didn't do anything to help Donald Trump win the presidency?

Quote of the Day: There's No Such Thing as Facts Anymore
www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2016/12/quote-day-theres-no-such-thing-
facts-anymore

One of the problems with Donald Trump's habit of lying endlessly—aside from the fact that he does it in the first place—is that it affects everyone around him. By chance, today brought this all front and center. We start off with Trump himself:

#Trump tells Cincinnati rally that violent crime is at a 45-year high. It's actually at a 51-year low, according to latest FBI data. https://twitter.com/RVAwonk/status/804497948742664193/photo/1
— Caroline O. (@RVAwonk) December 2, 2016

This is a routine, garden-variety Trump lie. He obviously knows it's untrue, but he doesn't care. You see, for him it represents some kind of higher truth. Trump lackey Scottie Nell Hughes, in the course of explaining a different Trump lie, tells us how this works on the Diane Rehm show this morning:

People that say facts are facts, they're not really facts....There's no such thing, unfortunately anymore, as facts. And so Mr. Trump's tweet, amongst a certain crowd, a large part of the population, are truth. When he says that millions of people illegally voted, he has some facts amongst him and his supporters, and people believe they have facts to back that up. Those that do not like Mr. Trump, they say that those are lies and there's no facts to back it up.

Got that? These things the rest of us call lies are facts amongst him and his supporters. Senior lackey Kellyanne Conway agrees that truth in Trumpworld is a relative thing, but defends it more directly. If Trump says it, then by definition there must be something to it:

.@KellyannePolls on Trump’s unfounded tweets about fraud: “He’s president-elect so that’s presidential behavior”
— Zeke Miller (@ZekeJMiller) December 2, 2016

Finally, Corey Lewandowski tells us all to just get the hell over it:

This is the problem with the media. You guys took everything that Donald Trump said so literally. The American people didn’t. They understood it. They understood that sometimes — when you have a conversation with people, whether it’s around the dinner table or at a bar — you’re going to say things, and sometimes you don’t have all the facts to back it up.

Apparently we've got four years of this behavior ahead of us. Trump's "facts" aren't meant to be facts. They just represent a state of mind, or perhaps an aspiration of some kind. His supporters all get this. Now we'd all better get it too.

When Jimmy Carter was elected president, he put his peanut farm into a blind trust. An independent trustee had the authority to rent or sell the property without Carter’s approval. The family farm, which Carter worked with his own hands, was sacrificed for the sake of public ethics and avoiding conflicts of interest.

Donald Trump’s business interests ain’t peanuts.

The president-elect has business interests across the globe. The full scale of his financial interests remains largely unknown because he never released tax returns.

It is unprecedented in our nation’s history for the president to maintain these corridors for personal profit.

Trump’s business interests create avenues for bribery, risk-distorting presidential priorities and potentially violate the Constitution.

On Wednesday, Trump announced over Twitter that he would remove himself “completely out of business operations.” That vague promise doesn’t go far enough.

For the sake of the nation and his own presidency, Trump should divest his business. That, by the way, is what the Office of Government Ethics has recommended.

In other words: Mr. Trump, drain your swamp.

There are seven weeks until the inauguration, and ethical questions already are appearing.

Foreign diplomats are going out of their way to stay at Trump-branded hotels in an attempt to curry favor with and access to the next president. The cost for rooms at Trump’s Washington, D.C., hotel has spiked to five times the normal rate. Those dollars will eventually end up in Trump’s own bank account.

During the campaign, the Clinton Global Initiative became a target for Trump’s accusations of crooked, insider dealing. Give money, get access. Now, by extension it’s book a top-dollar event at Mar-a-lago, and curry favor of the Trump family.

We’re also troubled by the president-elect being unwilling — or unable — to break out of a mindset that puts his personal profit ahead of national interests.

Even before the ink was dry on ballots, Trump met with Brexit leader Nigel Farage. In their limited time together, guess what came up? Our president-elect was upset about wind farms that are within sight of his Aberdeenshire golf resort in Scotland. As bad as using his elected office to lobby on behalf of his business interests, Trump’s spokesperson after the meeting denied that the personal issues were talked about.

There’s an easy way to eliminate the temptation to mix national interests with business: Divest the holdings.

There may be moments when policy that helps the nation hurts Trump’s bottom line. Voters deserve a president who won’t hesitate to put America first.

And the law demands it. The Constitution prohibits the president from receiving payments, or emoluments, from a foreign state.

Richard W. Painter, the chief White House ethics lawyer for President George W. Bush, has stated that Trump opens himself to impeachment if he’s caught violating the emoluments clause.

Whether his multi-billion dollar loan from the Bank of China, or his hotel holdings in foreign nations, Trump leaves far too many opportunities for adversarial powers to slip Yuans, Rubles or Euros into his pocket.
Even die-hard Republicans are starting to worry.

“We’ll see if it works or not. I hope it does. I trust it will. But if it didn’t, he’ll pay a horrific political price,” U.S. Rep. Tom Cole, an Oklahoma Republican, told Politico.

He very well should.

Trump is feeling insecure. Attorneys for President-elect Donald Trump have moved to block the vote recount in Pennsylvania, adding to complaints filed to stop similar proceedings in Michigan and Wisconsin.

The filing comes on the heels of the Trump camp's complaint reported earlier Thursday in Michigan dismissing Green Party candidate Jill Stein's claims of impropriety during the 2016 presidential race, and a day after the the Wisconsin Republican Party logged a complaint with the Federal Election Committee arguing that Stein was seeking to benefit Democratic Party nominee Hillary Clinton.

Stein rejected the president-elect's efforts as "outrageous" Thursday.

What's your problem, Trump? That Jill Stein, not Hillary, is the only person standing between you and the Presidency? Hillary conceded the election about 5 minutes after the polls closed while Jill Stein suspects Trump, with all his ill-gotten wealth and his lack of ethics, did something crooked. Jill already knows Trump is a crook, but she now wants to know if Trump is a crook who steals elections, too. He, and his lawyers, are certainly acting like he is one.

In eight years in the White House there had been an uninterrupted stretch of calm and decency. In eight years there has been no scandal, not even a whiff of scandal, coming from the White House. That is a profoundly difficult thing to do, especially with the two houses of Congress in Republican hands and the president’s every move or hope met with biblical opposition.

For eight years we have been able to look to the White House and see a president who thinks and acts with cool deliberation, whose every sentence is well-considered. Anyone can disagree with President Obama’s policies but it cannot be denied that the first family acted with unerring decorum and amenity.

People of all affiliations must admit that the period of calm dignity at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is fast approaching its end. Whatever his capabilities, Donald Trump is not a man of serenity. He is loud and brash, he is not above spreading rumours and falsehoods, and controversy follows him as surely as dusk follows day. There are currently 75 lawsuits outstanding against him. They range from employees at his buildings suing him for personally sexually assaulting them to an architect who claims he was never paid for the work he completed. Trump has been married three times, and has filed for bankruptcy five times, in each case emerging unscathed while his creditors receive pennies on the dollar.

A few days after winning the electoral college, the president-elect settled a class action against him, wherein 7,000 people sued him for fraud. These 7,000 individuals had paid up to $35,000 to learn at Trump University and, according to all of the 7,000 people, none came away with any tangible knowledge or benefit. After winning the election, the president-elect paid $25m to settle their claim. It has been reported that most of the plaintiffs will receive about half of what they lost.

We are in a time of extraordinary relativism, when the incoming president was sued for fraud by 7,000 different people and this was not seen as a disqualifying fact. The president-elect was accused of defrauding thousands of their life savings, and now, across from the White House, we’re building a structure wherein he can watch a parade in his honour.

Global Warming Research in Danger as Trump Appoints Climate Skeptic to NASA Team

NASA’s monthly updates on temperature deliver a steady dose of dread as month after month was declared the hottest recorded. Donald Trump’s first NASA transition team pick is Christopher Shank, a Hill staffer who has said he is unconvinced of a reality that is accepted by the vast majority of climate scientists.

Shank has criticized the type of scientific data NASA regularly releases. As part of a panel in September 2015 at Arizona State University’s Consortium for Science, Policy, and Outcomes, he said, “The rhetoric that’s coming out, the hottest year in history, actually is not backed up by the science — or that the droughts, the fires, the hurricanes, etc., are caused by climate change, but it’s just weather.”

He shrugged off the severity of the climate crisis, criticizing “the rhetoric about, let’s call this climate pollution, which is CO2, which I’m emitting here today.” And he mockingly asked: “is this really about some neo-Malthusian discussion about population control that we’re talking about here?” “What are we trying to solve here?” he asked.

Shank’s appointment dovetails with threats from Trump’s advisors to scrap NASA’s research on climate change. In an October op-ed for Space News, Trump campaign advisors Robert Walker and Peter Navarro stated, “NASA should be focused primarily on deep space activities rather than Earth-centric work that is better handled by other agencies.”

David Titley, director of the Center for Solutions to Weather and Climate Risk at Penn State, wrote in response, “We can measure the Earth as an entire system only from space.”

NASA works with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to measure climate changes. NASA’s role includes developing observational technologies.

“If they really shut down the satellites, we’d be driving in the dark, in the fog, with no headlights, on a mountain road,” Titley said in an interview. Analyzing the satellite data reveals inconvenient truths, he said. “What they will find is the vast scientific consensus is correct. The earth is warming. We know why it’s warming. And it will continue to warm as we add greenhouse gases into the system.”

“Even in the post-truth world, shouting and screaming in all caps at 3 in the morning is not going to change the physics,” he said.

Trump, Cabinet could avoid Billions in taxes thanks to this little-known law

Trump transition and company representatives did not respond to requests for comment.

President-elect Donald Trump’s ultra-wealthy Cabinet nominees will be able to avoid paying billions of dollars in taxes in the coming weeks when they sell some of their holdings to avoid conflicts of interest in their new positions.

The tax advantage will allow Trump officials, forced by ethics laws to sell certain assets, to defer the weighty tax bills they would otherwise owe on the profits from selling stock and other holdings.

The benefit is one of the more subtle ways that the millionaires and billionaires of Trump’s White House, which already will be the wealthiest administration in modern American history, could benefit financially from their transition into the nation’s halls of power.

The legal tax maneuver, offered for years to executive-branch appointees and employees, was designed to help ease the sting of being forced to suddenly sell investments.

But the federal program, encoded in Section 2634 of federal ethics laws and known as a “certificate of divestiture,” has never been tested quite like this. Trump’s Cabinet picks have amassed assets worth billions of dollars from lifetimes in banking and investing, much of which they will be able to sell tax-free.

The benefit was used to great effect when Henry Paulson, then chief executive of Goldman Sachs, was nominated by President George W. Bush to serve as treasury secretary. Paulson sold roughly half a billion dollars’ worth of Goldman stock and used the benefit to avoid what the Economist estimated was $200 million in taxes.

I am of the opinion that this is just another multi-billion dollar government giveaway to the wealthy. Trump and his team will almost certainly take maximum personal advantage of all this free tax money. But they don't have to.

SECOND; we could at least parse the comments by time. There was Trump the candidate, and Trump the President-elect (which is a brief period) and then there will be Trump the President.

Each stage has its own demands and, especially, its own authorities.

As candidate, Trump - like all candidates - could do nothing but promise. His responsibility was to engage in a year-long job interview with the American people, and all aspects of his past and personality were open to examination.

As President-elect, Trump's MAIN responsibility is to prepare for the Presidency. He needs to select a Cabinet and meet with foreign leaders and so forth, but in reality there is nothing he can implement in terms of policy. So for example, it's unfair to criticize the Carrier deal because "it's not what Trump said he would do" because what Trump SAID he would do, he would do as President. But as President-elect, there's not much he CAN do.

At this moment, you post

Will they? We don't know. Also, what the article does not address in detail is this point:
Quote:

The tax advantage will allow Trump officials, forced by ethics laws to sell certain assets, to defer the weighty tax bills they would otherwise owe on the profits from selling stock and other holdings.
Now, as far as I know, "defer" means "delay" not "cancel". Maybe these office-holders can "defer" taxes, but can they avoid them entirely? Also, isn't that true of ANY Cabinet member in ANY administration?

Anyway, this is speculation. It's USEFUL speculation, because it gives us a point to focus on when real action DOES occur, but so far it's speculation.

As President, we can all hold him fully responsible for his actions, since he will have the full authority of office. At that point, he is worth all of the slings and arrows that his authority is worth.

If Trump’s appointee gets a Certificate of Divestiture, he defers capital gains taxes until he sells the new stock bought with his old assets. He won’t pay any tax if he holds on to the new stock until his death. The Stepped-up basis** for inherited stock is usually based on its value on the date of the Trump's appointee’s death, which can’t come too soon in my opinion. As the US government FAQ suggests: “Eligible persons should seek the advice of their personal tax advisors about the tax aspects of these transactions.”
https://ethics.od.nih.gov/topics/cd-faq.pdf

In other words, cut the goddamn crap, Signym. You’re being a long-winded spokesman for Trump when he already has paid people to do this for him.

I should add that we are not likely to find out what Trump's appointees do to avoid taxes because Trump is not requiring them to make public their tax returns, past, present or future. We will also be waiting forever for Trump's tax returns, too. But I can't prove that because forever has not yet passed. He could pleasantly surprise us on Monday with his returns, but don't bet on that.
________________

** I looked up the history for the “Stepped-up basis” of Internal Revenue Code § 1014(a)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stepped-up_basis

Under the note worthily corrupt Republican President Warren G. Harding in 1921, Congress enacted the predecessors of present I.R.C. §§ 1014 and 1015 (setting a fair market value basis for bequests and a carryover basis for gifts). One commentator has noted that the rationale for the Section 1014-type statute is unclear, and that it appears “to have been merely the legislative adoption of a consistent administrative practice.”
From footnote 7, page 363 of http://scholarship.law.duke.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1537&c
ontext=faculty_scholarship

Unlike the historical document, I would say that the rational for a Section 1014-type statute is perfectly clear, despite the obfuscation and the misleading arguments used by Republicans. I have taken advantage of it. I know how it works.

The stepped-up basis of I.R.C. §§ 1014 is used by the top 1% to protect their wealth. The wealthy would say that everyone can take advantage, if only they also inherited stock. But you know that will never happen for most people.

In fairness to the people who will never use it, Section 1014 should be removed from the tax code. That is not gonna happen under President Trump. The still living rich feel it is right to protect their historic privileges written into the tax code by long dead Republicans.

The Carrier deal
http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2016/12/03/when-the-ridiculous-is-omi
nous
/

I’m still mulling over the Carrier deal, which I suspect will be a template for the Trump years in general — again and again, we’ll see actions that are ridiculous in themselves, but add up to a very scary picture.

Start with the ridiculous nature of the whole thing: we’re talking, it now turns out, about 800 jobs in a nation with 145 million workers. Around 75,000 workers lose their jobs every working day! How does 800 jobs, which isn’t even a rounding error in the overall jobs picture, come to dominate a couple of news cycles? For Sept 2016: 1,474,000 lost a job that month.
http://myf.red/g/c0W7

Yet 800 jobs did dominate the news — with overwhelmingly positive coverage, at least on TV news.
http://mediamatters.org/research/2016/12/01/television-news-praises-tr
ump-s-symbolic-coup-carrier-jobs-announcement/214683

And that’s ominous in itself. It says that large parts of the news media, whose credulous Trump coverage and the media’s sniping at Hillary helped bring us to where we are, will be even worse, even more poodle-like, now that this guy is in office.

Meanwhile, as Larry Summers says, the precedent — although tiny — is not good: it’s not just crony capitalism, it’s government as protection racket, where companies shape their strategies to appease politicians who will reward or punish based on how it affects their PR efforts and/or personal fortunes.
www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/12/02/why-trumps-carrier-deal
-is-bad-for-america
/

That is, we’re looking at what may well be the beginning of a descent into banana republic governance.

This is, as Larry says, bad both for the economy and for freedom. And there’s every reason to expect many stories like this in the days ahead.

You skeptical and objective toward Trump? Are you sure this happened on fireflyfans.net? Or did it just happen in your imagination? When do you think you climbed up on this high horse of virtue and civility? Because you need to give a dozen examples with the time, date and location this happened before anyone would believe you.

While I wait, I'll read:

"America has always been aspirational to me. Even when I chafed at its hypocrisies, it somehow always seemed sure, a nation that knew what it was doing, refreshingly free of that anything-can-happen existential uncertainty so familiar to developing nations. But no longer. The election of Donald Trump has flattened the poetry in America’s founding philosophy: the country born from an idea of freedom is to be governed by an unstable, stubbornly uninformed, authoritarian demagogue. And in response to this there are people living in visceral fear, people anxiously trying to discern policy from bluster, and people kowtowing as though to a new king. Things that were recently pushed to the corners of America’s political space—overt racism, glaring misogyny, anti-intellectualism—are once again creeping to the center."

I have said time and time again, that Trump and Hillary are EQUALS in terms of ethics. Hillary is a two-faced liar. Trump is a bullshitter. Trump stiffed people out of money and engaged in false advertising. Hillary advocated killing tens of thousands of faraway brown people. Trump said that women could let him grab them by the p*ssy, Hillary laughed and clapped her hands like a delighted child when Qaddafi was killed and Libya was destroyed. I said TRUMP IS A LOOSE CANNON.

I have said over and over, the two candidates are MORAL EQUIVALENTS. NEITHER ONE OF THEM is a "nice person". So where in any of my discussions of Trump did I give any kind of ringing endorsement? Ever? Care to quote me?

I had only THREE REASONS to vote for Trump, and it didn't have anything to do with Trump being a nice guy, or "draining the swamp", bringing jobs back to America (I even wrote a very long post about how incomplete Trump's plan was) or anything of those other reasons that you are trying to hang on me.

Scientists have discovered a powerful new strain of fact-resistant humans, a sobering new study reports.

The research, conducted by the University of Minnesota, identifies a virulent strain of humans who are virtually immune to any form of verifiable knowledge, leaving scientists at a loss as to how to combat them.

“These humans appear to have all the faculties necessary to receive and process information,” Davis Logsdon, one of the scientists who contributed to the study, said. “And yet, somehow, they have developed defenses that, for all intents and purposes, have rendered those faculties totally inactive.”

More worryingly, Logsdon said, “As facts have multiplied, their defenses against those facts have only grown more powerful.”

Taiwan calling Trump

Honestly, the problem with Donald is he doesn’t know what he doesn’t know. It turns out that is only half of the problem; the other half is that he has surrounded himself with manipulators who know how much he doesn’t know.

Since Election Day, Trump has largely avoided receiving intelligence briefings, either because he doesn’t think it’s important that he receive them or because he just doesn’t care about them. Bush, in 2001, ignored warnings about Osama bin Laden. Only in our darkest imaginings can we wonder what warnings Trump is ignoring now.

When Trump discovered that he was being mocked for taking the Taiwan call, he tweeted what he seems to have thought would be a mitigating explanation: “The President of Taiwan CALLED ME today to wish me congratulations on winning the Presidency. Thank you!” If he meant to imply that the incoming call was a surprise, then he either was lying or had been misled; Taiwan’s press had already published news of a “scheduled” call hours earlier. The Taipei Times reported, “Trump reportedly agreed to the call, which was arranged by his Taiwan-friendly campaign staff after his aides briefed him on issues regarding Taiwan and the situation in the Taiwan Strait, sources said.”

In the hours that followed, it became clear that Trump may have been manipulated into doing something he doesn’t understand. Michael Crowley, of Politico, noted that the former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton, who favors a tilt away from Beijing, visited Trump Tower on Friday for undisclosed reasons. Bolton has argued for “playing the Taiwan card” to pressure Beijing. In a January op-ed in the Wall Street Journal, he wrote,
Quote:

The new U.S. administration could start with receiving Taiwanese diplomats officially at the State Department; upgrading the status of U.S. representation in Taipei from a private “institute” to an official diplomatic mission; inviting Taiwan’s president to travel officially to America; allowing the most senior U.S. officials to visit Taiwan to transact government business; and ultimately restoring full diplomatic recognition.
Further complicating matters, according to the blog Shanghaiist, Trump and his family are currently trying to win a lucrative contract with a Taiwanese city. Did Trump break nearly four decades of diplomatic practice to sweeten his family’s business prospects with Taiwan? His supporters, of course, say no. But the President-elect has taken no steps that would defuse that perception.

Getting on to my real Trump bashing business:

Fake news, a fake president and a fake country: Welcome to America, land of no context

Donald Trump's supporters have locked themselves in a "Matrix"-style simulated America — but they're not alone.

How much of the “news” is fake? How much of reality is “real”? After an election cycle driven by lies, delusions and propaganda — including lies about lies, multiple layers of fake news and meta-fake news — we are about to install a fake president, elected by way of the machineries of fake democracy.

The country that elected him is fake too, at least in the sense that the voters who supported Donald Trump largely inhabit an imaginary America, or at least want to. They think it’s an America that used to exist, one they heard about from their fathers and grandfathers and have always longed to go back to. It’s not.

Their America is an illusion that has been constructed and fed to them through the plastic umbilicus of Fox News and right-wing social media to explain the anger and disenfranchisement and economic dislocation and loss of relative privilege they feel. All of which are real, if not necessarily honorable; it represents the height of liberal uselessness to keep on quarreling about whether Trump’s fabled “white working class” suffers real economic pain or is just a cesspool of racism.

That argument is really about other things, to be sure: It’s about whether the Democratic Party — whose long-promised era of permanent demographic hegemony and middle-class multiculturalism keeps being delayed into the indefinite future, defeat after defeat after defeat — requires a major reconstruction or just a little cosmetic surgery. Meanwhile, out in the pseudo-reality of Trumpian America, racial resentment and economic suffering are so profoundly intertwined that there’s no way to disentangle them.

Arguments that the so-called left should pretty much ignore the deplorables who keep on voting against their own interests, or should abandon “identity politics” in quest of some middle-road economic populism that blends Bill Clinton and FDR, are both missing the point. In a nation where a candidate who won the popular vote by roughly 2.5 million did not win the election, we are no longer dealing with reality, at least as it used to exist.

Donald Trump’s White House Counsel Is Proud “Architect” of America’s Corrupt Big Money Politics

Don McGahn, soon to be Donald Trump’s White House counsel, bears as much responsibility as any single person for turning America’s campaign finance system into something akin to a gigantic, clogged septic tank.

From 2008 to 2013, McGahn was one of the six members of the Federal Election Commission, the government agency in charge of civil enforcement of campaign finance laws. (Three members of the FEC must be Republican.) While there, he led a GOP campaign that essentially ground enforcement of election laws to a halt.

“I’ve always thought of McGahn’s appointment as an FEC commissioner as analogous to appointing an anarchist to be chief of police,” said Paul S. Ryan, vice president at Common Cause. “He’s largely responsible for destroying the FEC as a functioning law enforcement agency, and seemingly takes great pride in this fact. McGahn has demonstrated a much stronger interest in expanding the money-in-politics swamp than draining it.”

Elaine Weintraub, a current FEC commissioner, overlapped with McGahn’s entire tenure. McGahn and his two fellow GOP appointees, she recalled, possessed a “very strong ideological opposition to campaign finance laws in general.”

This ideology — that essentially all limits on campaign contributions and spending are unconstitutional violations of the First Amendment — was developed by a loose affiliation of conservative lawyers including McGahn, beginning in the late 1990s. It started bearing fruit a decade later with a series of court decisions, including the Citizens United ruling in 2010. McGahn’s page on his law firm’s website describes him as one of the “architects of the campaign finance revolution.”

McGahn’s perspective manifested itself consistently at the FEC. Previously, when the agency received outside complaints alleging violations of the law, its general counsel’s office was responsible for conducting a preliminary examination of the issues and then making a recommendation to the commission members about the legal issues involved and whether to proceed with a full investigation.

McGahn was so extreme that he attempted to block the general counsel’s staff from reading news reports, using Google or looking at a campaign’s web site without prior authorization from a majority of the FEC commissioners. Had the measure passed, because the FEC has six members at full capacity and no more than three can be from one political party, Republicans would effectively have controlled what FEC lawyers were allowed to read.

Just OOC, SECOND, why are you made at ME?? Why would you be mad at Kiki, or even Trump?

Trump did his best to represent himself. He shouldn't be expected to do anything else (altho you seem to think that maybe he should have thrown the election to Hillary).

Did TRUMP engineer the DNC's flaming clusterfuck of a failure? Did KIKI? Did I? It seems to me that if you want to be mad at someone, you should be pissed at Debbie and Donna and even Hillary herself, for screwing up so badly. Because they lost the election. They wanted to run against Trump so that their unpopular Annointed One could succeed. It turns out Trump was a stronger candidate than they expected. And when many people were desperate for change, they made the fatal mistake of running Hillary as the establishment candidate. They SHOULD HAVE run Bernie. Now THAT'S something to be mad about!

According to one pollster, 25% of Trump’s votes came from people who — knowing for certain he had no path to 270 electoral votes, because that’s what the media assured them — voted for him to make a statement, but would not have if they had thought he might actually win. If that’s true, and had they voted for Hillary instead, the vote would have been something like 47 million for Trump, 80 million for Clinton. Even more if some Jill Stein and Gary Johnson voters would have voted Clinton if they’d thought Trump could win.

Did 1kiki vote for Jill Stein to "make a statement" against Hillary in the secret world inside 1kiki's tiny head? So, you're going to be mad at roughly half of the United States because they didn't vote for your Annointed One?

Yanno, SECOND, after Bush stole the election for the second time, I was pretty pissed off. But not at people here who voted for Bush, and not even at the GOP for cheating, but at the Democratic Party, for not taking action when it was clear that Karl Rove stole the election the FIRST time (FL 2000).

Why did the DNC SPECIFICALLY rig the primary against Sanders? To me, that was a serious strategic blunder: If the voting results were telling the DNC that one candidate could win the primary and the polling results were telling them that same candidate had a much better chance of winning against Trump in a head-to-head, why did the DNC insist on foisting off a much less popular candidate, by hook or by crook, on its own constituency???

That kind or arrogance and entitlement is pretty breathtaking, but I can think of a few interlinked reasons why:

1) Most of Sanders donations came in small amounts, from individuals.
2) Hillary would be able to fill her "war chest" with multi-million dollar, big-ticket donations,
3) Those big donors wanted a return on their investment, which WASN'T Bernie.
4) The DNC believed they would need a lot of money to run a campaign, especially for a candidate who had a huge unfavorable rating.

What this speaks of, in the DNC, is a lack of faith in the popular vote for its own brand. The DNC deliberately turned its back on its own voters choice. The decision having been made, Debbie and Donna and John and the rest of the party apparatchiks then conspired how they were going to jam Hillary down everyone's throats.

I still have a hard time wrapping my head around that decision. Either Bernie's probable policies ... on "free trade", on Israel, on Saudi Arabia and our proxy terrorists, on the dollar, on globalism .... were going to be so different than Hillary's (her policies being known to those who get to see her "private face") that Bernie was completely and totally unacceptable to the DNC's underwriters .... or people in the DNC were getting serious kickbacks from their big-money donors. In any case, it boggles the mind.

That was the DNC's internal flaw. Externally, the DNC simply stopped representing "Americans". It made a point of slicing and dicing America into gay-Americans, female-Americans, Hispanic/Chicano-Americans, African-Americans, transgender-Americans, illegal aliens, legal immigrants etc and appealing to each slice as if they were victims (We are, but not in the way the DNC wants us to believe). But in the end, the DNC (Obama) followed policies that simply did not benefit the vast majority of Americans, where ALL of our interests overlap.

It's not just Trump, SECOND. I don't know if you noticed, but the DNC has lost a lot of Congressional seats, state Legislators, governors, and even county supervisors/commissioners, and mayors.

They're doing something seriously wrong. It's time for you to stop being mad, you need to wake up and smell the coffee. And if you are as rich as you say you are, and you have any donor-influence on the DNC, or at least Texas Democrats, then use that influence to slap them into reality.

Post-Truth Politics

Commentators have begun diagnosing the political and intellectual condition of the country. One assessment that has been gaining traction is that, in electing Mr. Trump to the Presidency, the United States has embraced a "post-truth" politics. The term does not have a unified meaning. It refers instead to several related but distinct phenomena. It is necessary to disambiguate its central uses:

1) Most commonly, "post-truth" is employed to mark the fact that apparently a large segment of the electorate holds that although Ms. Clinton's alleged dishonesty disqualifies her for office, Mr. Trump's dozens of demonstrable lies, deceptions, and whole-cloth fabrications are acceptable, if not positively admirable. That is, our politics has become "post-truth" in that lying and dissembling no longer necessarily count against a politician. But when one regards lying as disqualifying only for one's political opponents, one reveals that one's concern isn't really with truth telling at all. One is appealing to truth in a strictly opportunistic way.

2) A second deployment of "post-truth" is closely related, though more radical. It concerns the new found force of unrelenting denial. When caught in a lie or fabrication, Mr. Trump's leading tactic is to flatly deny that he ever said the lying or fabricated thing that, provably, he said. This goes beyond President Bill Clinton's infamously tortured semantics concerning "the meaning of ‘is'." Here, Trump embraces the view that words mean whatever he at any moment declares them to mean. When meaning is fixed wholly by the speaker's will, what the speaker has said is no long evaluable by anyone but the speaker himself. Hence our politics is post-truth in that lying, and even asserting falsehood, is conceptually impossible. There could be no such thing as lying for those who refuse to be mastered by words, even by their own words.

3) A third and more distal usage concerns the organized construction of an alternative information environment that reliably delivers to political consumers commentary and news items explicitly designed to confirm their pre-existing political opinions. The current predominance of news outlets that overtly brand themselves as pitched to those with particular political leanings signals a "post-truth" era in that such outlets thrive on the denunciation of the very idea of unbiased journalism. According to producers and consumers of alternative news, all news reporting presupposes a set of substantive political commitments. The difference between CNN and Breitbart is simply that the latter owns up to that fact, whereas the former attempts to disguise it in a shroud of fake journalistic integrity.

This being the internet, there is a reasonable doubt that you live where you say you live and you voted the way you say you voted. But about other subjects, ones that you've given your opinions on, there are no doubts that you don't know what you are writing about.

A guy who won the Nobel Prize in Economics, who might know something about economics, said: Part of the whole Trump phenomenon involves white working class voters rallying around a candidate who promised to bring back the coal and industrial jobs of the past, and lashing out at anyone who refuses to make similar promises. Yet the promise was and is fraudulent. If trying to get the economic analysis right is elitist, we’re in very big trouble — and perhaps we are.

So what would a political manifesto aimed at winning over these voters look like? You could promise to make their lives better in ways that don’t involve bringing back the old plants and mines — which, you know, Obama did with health reform and Hillary would have done with family policies and more. But that apparently isn’t an acceptable answer.

Can we promise new, different jobs? Job creation under Obama has been pretty good, but it hasn’t offered blue-collar jobs in the same places where the old industrial jobs have eroded.

So maybe the answer is regional policies, to promote employment in declining regions? There is certainly a case in principle for doing this, since the costs of uprooting workers and families are larger than economists like to imagine. I would say, however, that the track record of regional support policies in other countries, which spend far more on such things than we are likely to, is pretty poor. For example, massive aid to the former East Germany hasn’t prevented a large decline in population, much bigger than the population decline in Appalachia over the same period.

And I have to admit to a strong suspicion that proposals for regional policies that aim to induce service industries to relocate to the Rust Belt would not be well received, would in fact be attacked as elitist. People want those manufacturing jobs back, not something different. And it’s snooty and disrespectful to say that this can’t be done, even though it’s the truth.

So I really don’t know the answer. But back to the starting point: when I analyze the effects of trade on manufacturing employment, the goal is to understand the effects of trade on manufacturing employment — not to win over voters. No, dry statistics aren’t good for political campaigns; but that’s no reason to ban statistics.

Amazon’s new grocery store highlights a huge hole in Donald Trump’s promise on jobs

Trump could handle this by making it illegal. Or he could INCREASE employment by requiring two or three cashiers for every customer. If Trump wants to preserve jobs he should just outlaw productivity gains.

Amazon debuted its new Go store on Monday. The grocery store will allow shoppers to check in to the store with their phones, grab what they need, and simply walk out of the store. The shopper's Amazon account will be billed for the cost of the goods. Customers won't have to stand in line, and critically, they won't have to interact with a cashier.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 856,850 Americans were employed as grocery store cashiers in May 2015, the most recent data available. Theoretically, Amazon Go's model grocery store puts a chunk of these jobs at risk. Include all cashiers (there doesn't seem to be a reason the Amazon Go model couldn't work for say, clothes or books) and that's roughly 3,500,000 people in roles that are at risk of being automated away.

Trump could create MORE JOBS for coalminers, for example, by requiring them to load coal by hand with a shovel. There is old miner song: “16 tons and what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt.” Or Trump could buy coal and store it around the White House and military bases. Not that the coal is needed for fuel, but to make MORE JOBS!
