The Oval Office is different than business or TV. There's a lot of pushback, and not of the giggling Billy Bush variety. The press is on Trump 24/7, people die when he screws up, and his policies end up as disasters thanks to his ADD and unwillingness to think beyond bumper stickers. We don't know how Trump's fragile psyche will respond to continuous rolling disasters and front pages like this one:

We’ve never witnessed a political aide move as brazenly to consolidate power as Stephen Bannon — nor have we seen one do quite so much damage so quickly to his putative boss’s popular standing or pretenses of competence.

You weren't going to have a high approval rating for Trump. Period. Our nation has become more and more divided, at least since the GWB years, and this election process was just terrible. I think we all know of at least one relationship that was destroyed or family members who are no longer talking to each other because of it.

That's awesome Jack, really. I always wondered why you didn't try and get work renovating homes or doing house jobs since you did so much work on yours. You can start small, just handy man Jack kind of thing. You'd be surprised how much money you'd make. Plus, you set your hours = closer to freedom. Start in the rich part of town.

Is your new energy attributable to the election of Steve Bannon as co-President, 6ixStringJack?

Trump’s top adviser, Steve Bannon, delivered a 2014 speech to an audience at the Vatican hinting at what he might want Trump to achieve. In that address, delivered via teleconference, Bannon called for a revival of the tradition of the “church militant,” describing a vague yet apocalyptic threat he claims that Western countries face from both “Islamic jihadist fascism” and their own loss of religious faith:

“We’re at the very beginning stages of a very brutal and bloody conflict … to fight for our beliefs against this new barbarity that’s starting, that will completely eradicate everything that we’ve been bequeathed over the last 2,000, 2,500 years.”

Now consider how Bannon’s view of history was echoed that same year in a speech by Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who issued a similarly vague, yet no less frenzied call to arms:

“So let the world know that we are living today in a new era. Whoever was heedless must now be alert. Whoever was sleeping must now awaken. … You will face tribulation and fierce battle. … So prepare your arms, and supply yourselves with piety.”

Besides Bannon the propagandist, Trump also has a philosopher working in the White House:

Dark essays by White House Staffer are the intellectual source code of Trumpism
https://theintercept.com/2017/02/12/dark-essays-by-white-house-staffer
-are-the-intellectual-source-code-of-trumpism
/

A number of Trump’s officials have written crude and inflammatory books in years past, such as Michael Flynn, who heads the NSC. And there’s the case of Steve Bannon, the former Breitbart executive who is Trump’s senior adviser. But nobody in the administration has drawn up a real-time ideological blueprint to explain what’s happening under Trump — except Michael Anton, whose radical theories are lifted from those of a German philosopher named Carl Schmitt, who helped lay the legal foundations of the Nazi Party. Trump has appointed Michael Anton to a job in the White House.

Anton wrote “The Flight 93 Election,” which caused a minor stir when it came out. Conservatives who didn’t like Trump were aghast at its strange endorsement of the candidate, while liberals thought it showed the crackpot essence of the case for Trump. Here’s how the article began:

“2016 is the Flight 93 election: charge the cockpit or you die. You may die anyway. You — or the leader of your party — may make it into the cockpit and not know how to fly or land the plane. There are no guarantees. Except one: if you don’t try, death is certain. To compound the metaphor: a Hillary Clinton presidency is Russian Roulette with a semi-auto. With Trump, at least you can spin the cylinder and take your chances.”

Another Michael Anton article, bearing the title “Toward a Sensible, Coherent Trumpism,” began by noting that “Trump himself – no man of ideas, to say the least – is unsuited to the task of thinking through what his popularity means or how to build on it. Others will have to do the real work.” In an effort to justify the “America First” slogan that Trump was beginning to use, the article argued that the anti-Semitic “America First Committee” of the early 1940s, which opposed U.S. entry into World War II and was supported by Charles Lindbergh, had been “unfairly maligned” and was just an “alleged stain” on U.S. history. Anton described diversity as “a source of weakness” and one of the “ridiculous lies” that have been foisted on America by its liberal overlords.

The value of Anton’s work is that it makes plain the bigotry of Trumpism before Trump and his supporters won the election and became a bit more careful about what they said. There’s nothing that Steve Bannon has written or said in recent years that comes close to the clarifying sweep of Anton’s essays, which are not just a product of racism but an argument for it.

Trump can stay in bed while his apprentice sells Trump’s talking points on Sunday Morning TV:

White House senior adviser Stephen Miller lied when he said that 14 percent of all noncitizens are registered to vote.
Miller can “prove” only 5 people, maybe. The other 14% is a fabrication approved by Trump. But Trump voters are buying the fabrication:
https://theintercept.com/2017/01/25/just-5-clicks-internet-survey-insp
ired-trumps-claim-millions-voted-illegally
/

All other facts spoken by Stephen Miller and approved by Trump were also flat-out lies. But why not lie? What possible difference does it make?
www.washingtonpost.com/news/fact-checker/wp/2017/02/12/stephen-millers
-bushels-of-pinocchios-for-false-voter-fraud-claims/?utm_term=.0139627452f7

Miller also lied about foreigners pouring into the country to plot acts of terrorism. Trump approved.
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/the-parade-of-lies

After Miller was done on TV, Trump tweeted that he was pleased with his apprentice:
“Congratulations Stephen Miller- on representing me this morning on the various Sunday morning shows. Great job!”
https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/830804130692268032

What possible difference does it make that Stephen Miller lied for 30 minutes to George Stephanopoulos of ABCNews? Was George going to pause the show, rewind the tape, then ask the question again until Miller stops lying? I don’t think so!

That is why it makes no difference to Miller if it is lies or truth, since whatever he says will be broadcast, unedited, to Trump’s supporters. But Miller knows lies sell better than truth. Please consult Trump’s The Art of the Deal to confirm that truth, in particular, this story about Trump’s ghostwriter. The head of publishing at Random House said that Trump couldn’t write a postcard, let alone a whole page in a book:

Obama Accomplished Way More In His First Month Than Trump
www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2017/02/obama-accomplished-way-more-his
-first-month-trump

I'm jumping the gun a little here, but I'd like to remind everyone that during his first month in office, Barack Obama:

1. Signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.

2. Banned torture.

3. Signed a $787 billion stimulus bill.

4. Sent 17,000 additional troops to Afghanistan.

5. Ended the month with a net job approval rating of plus 27 percent. (That is approve of Obama percentage minus disapprove of Obama percentage.)

Donald Trump still has a few days to go, but so far he has:

1. Signed no legislation.

2. Mostly signed executive orders that are either routine (pay freezes, a halt to new regulation, reversing the Mexico City rule) or little more than PR messages to his base (cracking down on drug cartels, financial regulatory reviews, rebuilding the military, etc.).

3. Signed one executive order that was important, but rolled it out so incompetently that it caused massive chaos and was promptly overturned by the courts.

4. Sat idly by at dinner while aides discussed a North Korean missile launch and then failed to respond in any way at all.

5. Has presided over a White House so epically leak-prone and amateurish that people are already taking bets about which senior officials will get fired within the next few weeks.

6. Ended the month with a net job approval rating of about minus 8 percent.

This comparison extends to the new Republican Congress too. Obama's Congress was busy immediately with serious legislation. Trump's Congress is struggling to confirm cabinet nominees; is completely at sea about how to tackle Obamacare; and can't seem to agree on how to handle corporate taxes and tariffs. I assume that big tax cuts for the rich are still on the agenda, but it's not yet clear what else is.

Obviously Trump has done some genuine damage already, and both Trump and Congress have plenty of time left to wreak a tsunami of even more. But for a guy who was elected to shake things up, he sure hasn't done much real shaking yet. Just a lot of big talk.

Everybody knows that Donald Trump isn’t conventionally qualified to be president of the United States. But as a candidate, he appealed to people’s distaste for the conventional political system, and a segment of the public had Apprentice-induced faith in his management skills, figuring he would do what any business genius would do — surround himself with talent.

Many Americans take network television shows very seriously. But reality shows are, fundamentally, fake. Not everybody knows that, and, obviously, the marketing purpose of the “reality” genre is to present them as real. The premise of The Apprentice was, for years, that Trump was more than a rich, charismatic playboy with a flair for publicity. Instead he was a business expert, sufficiently knowledgeable about management to not only amass a fortune of his own but to sit in judgment of others’ performance.

The reality show that is the first month of Trump’s presidency suggests otherwise. Trump is a TV star, not a management savant. Trump said he would hire the best people. Instead we got the Trump administration.

The reality, of course, is that reality television is a subset of television, not of reality. The shows star “real people,” but they are still acting. Their narrative arcs are constructed by producers rather than screenwriters. But it’s still artifice. Hosting a successful reality television show is a legitimately difficult job that not anyone could do. But playing a management savant on The Apprentice didn’t require Trump to be a management savant any more than the cast of The Big Bang Theory can do theoretical physics.

“Did we think this clown, this buffoon with the funny hair, would ever become a world leader?” Bill Pruitt, a veteran reality producer who worked on the first two seasons of The Apprentice, wrote in Vanity Fair. “Not once. Ever. Would he and his bombastic nature dominate in prime-time TV? We hoped so.”

It’s now a commonplace that Trump and his underlings tell whoppers. Fact-checkers have never had it so good. But all politicians lie. Bill Clinton could barely go a day without some shading or parsing of the truth. Richard Nixon was famously tricky. But all the traditional political fibbers nonetheless paid some deference to the truth — even as they were dodging it. They acknowledged a shared reality and bowed to it. They acknowledged the need for a common set of facts in order for a liberal democracy to function at all. Trump’s lies are different. They are direct refutations of reality — and their propagation and repetition is about enforcing his power rather than wriggling out of a political conundrum. They are attacks on the very possibility of a reasoned discourse . . .

It is not so much this president’s agenda. That always changes from administration to administration. It is that when the linchpin of an entire country is deceptive and responds to any attempt to correct the record with rage and vengeance, everyone is always on edge.

I know we’re not supposed to bring this up — but it is staring us brutally in the face. I keep asking myself this simple question: If you came across someone in your everyday life who repeatedly said fantastically and demonstrably untrue things, what would you think of him?

There is no anchor any more. At the core of the administration of the most powerful country on earth, there is, instead, madness.

I think if you consider where (NYC) and when (70'- 90's) and in what business (Real Estate/Construction) his core personality was formed, it makes perfect sense.

Personally, I think there is something wrong with Trump's brain. We will know my guess is true if as he gets older does it get wronger?

Trump’s word of the day, 2/16/2017, is “mess” from his news conference:

“To be honest, I inherited a mess. It’s a mess. At home and abroad, a mess....I just want to let you know, I inherited a mess....ISIS has spread like cancer — another mess I inherited....And you look at Schumer and the mess that he’s got over there and they have nothing going.”
www.nytimes.com/2017/02/16/us/politics/donald-trump-press-conference-t
ranscript.html

Fact check the “mess” Trump claims to have inherited – Trump is selling delusions:
Trump inherited an economy in pretty good shape. Crime has steadily decreased over the past decade. ISIS is losing ground and close to defeat. Illegal immigration has been stable for many years. Test scores for schoolkids are up. Fewer than a dozen American soldiers have died in combat in the past year. Obamacare has cut the number of people without health insurance almost in half. The budget deficit is down to 3 percent of GDP. After years of stagnation, wages are finally starting to go up. Unemployment and inflation are both low.

By the way, the entire point of this press conference seemed to be directed at one thing: accusing the press of being horrible and dishonest. This came up in nearly every Trump answer. This is a great strategy for shoring up his base, of course. As near as I can tell, conservatives all thought this dumpster fire of a press conference was a terrific performance.

Is It Time to Call Trump Mentally Ill?

Richard A. Friedman FEB. 17, 2017
www.nytimes.com/2017/02/17/opinion/is-it-time-to-call-trump-mentally-i
ll.html

A lot of people seem to be questioning President Trump’s mental health. This month, Representative Ted Lieu, a California Democrat, went so far as to say he was considering proposing legislation that would require a White House psychiatrist.

More controversial is the number of mental health experts who are joining the chorus. In December, a Huffington Post article featured a letter written by three prominent psychiatry professors that cited President Trump’s “grandiosity, impulsivity, hypersensitivity to slights or criticism, and an apparent inability to distinguish between fantasy and reality” as evidence of his mental instability. While stopping short of giving the president a formal psychiatric diagnosis, the experts called for him to submit to a full medical and neuropsychiatric evaluation by impartial investigators.

A practicing psychologist went further in late January. He was quoted in a U.S. News and World Report article titled “Temperament Tantrum,” saying that President Trump has malignant narcissism, which is characterized by grandiosity, sadism and antisocial behavior.

I don’t doubt that these experts believe they are protecting the country from a president whose behavior they — like many of us — see as dangerous. A recent letter to the editor in this newspaper, signed by 35 psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers, put it this way: “We fear that too much is at stake to be silent.” It continued, “We believe that the grave emotional instability indicated by Mr. Trump’s speech and actions makes him incapable of serving safely as president.”

But the attempt to diagnose a condition in President Trump and declare him mentally unfit to serve is misguided for several reasons.

First, all experts have political beliefs that probably distort their psychiatric judgment. Consider what my mostly liberal profession said of Senator Barry Goldwater, the Republican nominee for president in 1964, right before the election. Members of the American Psychiatric Association were surveyed about their assessment of Goldwater by the now-defunct Fact magazine. Many savaged him, calling him “paranoid,” “grossly psychotic” and a “megalomaniac.” Some provided diagnoses, like schizophrenia and narcissistic personality disorder.

They used their professional knowledge as a political weapon against a man they had never examined and who certainly would never have consented to their discussing his mental health in public.

Goldwater sued (successfully) and, as a result, in 1973 the A.P.A. developed the Goldwater Rule. It says that psychiatrists can discuss mental health issues with the news media, but that it is unethical for them to diagnose mental illnesses in people they have not examined and whose consent they have not received.

Contrary to what many believe, this rule does not mean that professionals must remain silent about public figures. In fact, the guidelines specifically state that mental health experts should share their knowledge to educate the public.

So while it would be unethical for a psychiatrist to say that President Trump has narcissistic personality disorder, he or she could discuss common narcissistic character traits, like grandiosity and intolerance of criticism, and how they might explain Mr. Trump’s behavior. In other words, psychiatrists can talk about the psychology and symptoms of narcissism in general, and the public is free to decide whether the information could apply to the individual.

This may seem like splitting hairs, but it isn’t. Diagnosis requires a thorough examination of a patient, a detailed history and all relevant clinical data — none of which can be gathered from afar. Narcissism, for instance, isn’t the only explanation for impulsive, inattentive and grandiose behavior. Someone could be suffering instead from another clinical problem like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder; the abuse of drugs, alcohol or stimulants; or a variant of bipolar disorder, to name just a few.

This is all to say that when mental health professionals label public figures with mental illnesses, it is not just unethical — it’s intellectually suspect. We don’t have the requisite clinical data to know what we are talking about.

Besides, even if you posit that a president has a mental disorder, that in itself may say little about his fitness to serve. After all, Lincoln had severe depression. Theodore Roosevelt was probably bipolar. Ulysses S. Grant was an alcoholic. According to a study based on biographical data, 18 of America’s first 37 presidents met criteria suggesting they suffered from a psychiatric disorder during their lifetime: 24 percent from depression, 8 percent from anxiety, 8 percent from bipolar disorder and 8 percent from alcohol abuse or dependence. And 10 of those presidents showed signs of mental illness while they were in office.

You can be psychiatrically ill and be perfectly competent, just as you can be mentally healthy but totally unfit. (Of course, certain mental states, like florid psychosis or dementia, would render a president unfit to serve.)

There is one last reason we should avoid psychiatrically labeling our leaders: It lets them off the moral hook. Not all misbehavior reflects psychopathology; the fact is that ordinary human meanness and incompetence are far more common than mental illness. We should not be in the business of medicalizing bad actors.

So the nation doesn’t need a shrink to help it to decide whether President Trump is fit to serve, mentally or otherwise. Presidents should be judged on the merits of their actions, statements and, I suppose, their tweets. No experts are needed for that — just common sense.

Richard A. Friedman is a professor of clinical psychiatry and the director of the psychopharmacology clinic at the Weill Cornell Medical College, and a contributing opinion writer.

The New York Times explained why President Trump decided to hold a press conference yesterday:

For days, a frustrated and simmering president fumed inside the West Wing residence about what aides said he saw as his staff’s inadequate defense and the ineffectiveness of his own tweets....“I turn on the T.V., open the newspapers and I see stories of chaos,” Mr. Trump said as he attempted — with little discipline — to read from prepared remarks listing his accomplishments since being inaugurated one month ago. “Chaos. Yet it is the exact opposite. This administration is running like a fine-tuned machine.”

....It all made the brooding boss feel better, people close to Mr. Trump said. The news conference, they said, was Mr. Trump’s best effort at spitting the bit out of his mouth and escaping the bridle of the West Wing, where he views his only way to communicate his side of any argument is his 140-character limited Twitter feed.

The weird thing is that I suspect Trump believes this. Within his little bubble, everything really does seem to be running smoothly. He signs executive orders, holds "listening sessions," meets with foreign leaders, and issues directives to his staff. He's doing what he imagines a president should do, and figures that should produce presidential results. If the press says otherwise, then that's prima facie evidence that the press is dishonest and has it out for him.

The Trump University economics department strikes again

As the White House staff tries to put together a budget for President Donald Trump, they face a fundamental problem. Trump has promised to cut taxes, increase spending on the military and infrastructure, and avoid cuts to Social Security and Medicare. The only way to do that without producing an exploding budget deficit is to assume a big increase in economic growth.

And Nick Timiraos at the Wall Street Journal reports that Trump is planning to do just that — by making things up.
www.wsj.com/articles/trump-teams-growth-forecasts-far-rosier-than-thos
e-of-cbo-private-economists-1487356278

Trump assumes that the economy will be 17 percent larger than the current CBO estimate. Since Trump is assuming that GDP will be much higher, that will naturally mean that the Trump deficit as a share of GDP will be much lower.

The White House “estimate” is wildly at odds with the consensus of Congress, the Federal Reserve, and private sector forecasts. Most presidents would worry that if the staff are ordered to make up fake numbers, the staff will leak about it to the Wall Street journal. Most presidents lack Trump’s shamelessness.

Most presidents are trying, on some level, to work with Congress to get things done. Congress needs to use Congressional Budget Office numbers when legislating, so a fake White House forecast doesn’t help a president’s allies on the Hill. In effect, Trump is simply tossing congressional Republicans a hot potato — telling them he is disavowing responsibility for any of the tradeoffs inherent in governing, and that the responsibility is all on them to work things out.

Problems only arise if a bunch of snooty Ivy League economists insist that Trump is delusional, which explains why Trump hasn't bothered to hire anyone for his Council of Economic Advisers. They would just tell him stuff he doesn't want to hear.

Trump's first press conference is full of his false claims, his grievances and attacks on the media.

FULL EVENT President Donald Trump HUUGE Rally in Melbourne, Florida, Feb. 18, 2017

Premiere Episode of Trump Show Disappoints With Sluggish Pacing and Dated Material
www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2017/02/premiere-episode-trump-show-dis
appoints-sluggish-pacing-and-dated-material

Yesterday's episode of the Trump Show was disappointing. It started late and much of it was read off a teleprompter. A few miscellaneous comments:

No tie! Truly, Trump is a man of the people.

The first five minutes is dedicated solely to trashing the media. He says he wants to speak directly to The People without the filter of fake news. "When the media lies, I won't let them get away with it."
This is all done in service of a speech carried live and commercial-free by all three cable news channels.

The White House is running "smoothly, very smoothly."

He wants to bring back mining jobs for "clean, very clean coal." I'm sensing a rhetorical trend here.

He reprises several of his greatest hits: His Obamacare replacement will provide much better health care at a much lower cost. No more jobs are going to be sent overseas. He's going to slap a 35 percent tax on goods sent back here. And he still wants a "trillion dollar" infrastructure plan.

Jobs are already "pouring back in" to the country.

"Not one network will show the crowd," he says at the exact moment the pool camera pulls back to show the crowd.

He says he got the price of Air Force One down by a billion dollars. When did that happen? Let's google a bit...ah. It's just your basic Trump bullshit. The CEO of Boeing has agreed to keep the price tag below $4 billion for a project that's currently estimated to cost between $3.2 billion and $3.7 billion. Nice work, Donald.

He also got the price of the F-35 down by "hundreds of billions" dollars. It's actually hundreds of millions, but who's counting? And it was a price reduction that was already in the works before Trump ever got involved.

He says Obama was letting immigrants into the country with "no vetting, no nothing." This is just a ridiculous lie.

Meh. I doubt this rally did much for him. Even his most fervent supporters are starting to figure out that Trump isn't accomplishing a whole lot. Besides, how often can he go back to this well? Is he going to hold a pep rally every month? If he does, he better start coming up with some new material.

The researchers found profound differences in brain activity based on assumptions the audience made about the speaker. In the Christian subjects, activity spiked in analytical areas of the brain in response to the non-Christian speakers, but plummeted when they listened to the speaker they believed was known for healing powers. These changes were not present in the secular group. The researchers drew parallels to similar experiments done on subjects on hypnosis, noting that hypnotism, when it works, was usually preceded by the massive frontal deactivation—in effect, a “handing over” of executive function to the hypnotist. Further, they found that “the more the Christian participants deactivate their executive and social cognitive networks, the higher they rate the speaker’s charisma post-scan.”

Schjødt explained his findings in the context of a theory called the “predictive coding framework.” The brain is essentially a pattern recognition machine, constantly making predictions. Our perception is a combination of our prior expectations—expressed in the form of these automatic predictions—and actual sensory perception. As long as the sensory information matches the predictions, the brain hums along. When there is dissonance, the brain steps into make a correction. But when we are around people we believe to have special powers or abilities—when we have made an implicit decision that we can trust them—we seem to unconsciously down-regulate our analytical thinking.

“If you expect to experience God, or you are in the presence of a charismatic or religious expert, then you believe whatever is going on is correct, and it will lead you to that particular experience, so you don’t invest too many resources in being skeptical and checking,” Schjødt said.

http://nautil.us/issue/45/power/the-anatomy-of-charisma

Aberbach, a noted academic at McGill University and the London School of Economics, points to Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Adolf Hitler—two sides of the historical coin—as telling case studies. They both grew out of Depression-era needs of their respective nations. And they illustrate how profound an influence an individual charismatic can have.

“In the case of Roosevelt, he represented the ability to fight back in time of adversity,” Aberbach said. “On a personal level, he had fought back, and he could represent the nation that was fighting back. As a person, he could represent the group. In that sense, he was charismatic. I think that’s what it comes down to. The nation or the group seeks that person that represents them at a given time, and it’s unconscious.”

In the case of Hitler, Aberbach said, “A lot of people felt good when they heard him. It’s often forgotten because newsreel clips often represent him as a sort of raving lunatic. But in fact people were taken into a different kind of realm, a different kind of existence, where they felt one with Germany, they felt a sense of national pride, they felt an aggressive hope in their future.”

Trump "Considering" Intriguing New Way to Lie With Statistics

www.wsj.com/articles/trump-administration-considers-change-in-calculat
ing-u-s-trade-deficit-1487523299

The Trump administration is considering changing the way it calculates U.S. trade deficits, a shift that would make the country’s trade gap appear larger than it had in past years, according to people involved in the discussions.

The leading idea under consideration would exclude from U.S. exports any goods first imported into the country, such as cars, and then transferred to a third country like Canada or Mexico unchanged, these people told The Wall Street Journal.

Economists say that approach would inflate trade deficit numbers because it would typically count goods as imports when they come into the country but not count the same goods when they go back out, known as re-exports.

While Trump is at it, he could change his new jobs report to show all the people who have gained a job but not the ones who have lost a job. That should make the economy look great, just like Trump wants it.

Trump “Explains” His Swedish Terror Comment That Baffled Sweden
www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/donald-trump-explains-sweden-terror-comme
nt-baffled-nation-n723006

Trump watched Tucker Carlson interviewing right-wing filmmaker Ami Horowitz, who had recently made a documentary bitching and moaning about Sweden's refugee policy. Trump’s imagination “enhanced” the film (he lied, in other words) to include terrorists terrorizing Sweden in some way Trump did not specify. Or maybe he was trying to mislead his audience, but wanted plausible deniability? Only Trump knows, but the Swedish government knows that the terror only happened in Trump’s brain, not in the real world.

Anybody think Trump will be carefully explaining it to his audience so that any misunderstanding caused “accidentally” by Trump will be corrected?

Today Trump was asked why he's been so slow to fill 600 open government jobs that are presidential appointees. Trump said it was because he didn't want to fill them. "A lot of those jobs, I don't want to appoint someone because they're unnecessary to have," Trump said. "In government, we have too many people."

But if he is telling the truth, he will have a management problem. The open jobs are all relatively high-ranking positions that implement the president's will. If he doesn't fill them, the bureaucracy is likely to keep lumbering along out of sheer inertia, and that means doing whatever it's used to, not what Trump wants it to do. The more high-level positions he fills with loyalists, the better chance he has of pushing the bureaucracy in the direction he wants it go.

I guess we'll have to wait and see. At this time next year, if Trump still hasn't filled a substantial number of the 600 positions, then he was telling the truth—and his advisers and/or Trump are unwise in managing their 1.4 million civilian employees, 1.4 million active military personnel and 0.8 million reservists.

I guess some could find something to bitch about anything he does.

He doesn't want to fill those positions for the reasons he said? I'm all for it. I guess we'll see how it turns out.

I think a lot could be done slashing a lot of lower level government jobs as well. Still waiting for that to be a thing.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Comey Elected Trump
www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2017/03/say-it-me-again-james-comey-ele
cted-donald-trump-president

Engagement Labs is a company that tracks "what people are talking about." Brad Fay, one of their executives, tells us that during the presidential campaign people were talking very negatively about everyone. They were more negative about Donald Trump, but they were plenty negative about Hillary Clinton too. However, the gap between the candidates changed from time to time based on external events:

"Most decisively, there was a sudden change in the net sentiment results that followed immediately after FBI Director James Comey released his Oct. 28 letter to Congress about a renewed investigation of Clinton emails. Immediately afterwards, there was a 17-point drop in net sentiment for Clinton, and an 11-point rise for Trump, enough for the two candidates to switch places in the rankings, with Clinton in more negative territory than Trump. At a time when opinion polling showed perhaps a 2-point decline in the margin for Clinton, this conversation data suggests a 28-point change in the word of mouth “standings.” The change in word of mouth favorability metric was stunning, and much greater than the traditional opinion polling revealed."

Of course, a picture is worth a thousand words:

In late October, Clinton leads Trump by 24 points in the Engagement Labs survey. Two days after the Comey letter is released, Trump is ahead by four points. Trump kept that lead until Election Day.

Once again: Hillary Clinton did nothing particularly wrong in her campaign. She didn't ignore working-class whites. She wasn't too cautious on policy. She didn't overestimate the impact of educated voters. She wasn't complacent. What happened was simple: 12 days before the election, the FBI director released a letter saying he had found a brand-new trove of emails and implying that this might finally be the smoking gun about her private email server. That's it.

We'll never know for sure if James Comey did this because he's terminally stupid and didn't realize what impact it would have, or if he did it knowing full well what impact it would have. But he did it. And that's why Donald Trump is president.

DREAMTROVE

A lot of people elected Trump. One of them was Hillary Clinton, in so many ways. Not making peace with Bernie and his supporters, hogging the DNC and ticking off her fellow democrats. Not campaigning in states that were blue, where Trump was campaigning, and many of which then went for Trump.
Julian Assange, for leaking the emails. Vladimir Putin, in so many ways, Hassan Rouhani, for threating to attack if Hillary was elected. Soros, and his tentacles. Sanders, for not backing the party. Claire McCaskill, for calling attention to the DNC corruption, the DNC for being corrupt. and Lady Gaga, for this stunt on election eve, which according to the live online polls on one of those sites that were covering the live update, like 270 to win, cost HRC 1.5% in a few short hours.

Say what you like about it, that's the mother of all stupid right there. She can say it was a Michael Jackson reference, but this ain't a gig, this is a presidential election, and you know what's not "edgy" in a presidential election? Nazis.
And HRC swooping in to pick up some of that toxicity,

so that even though the media loves Hillary, their election day headlines overwhelmingly read things to the effect of "no, that's not a nazi uniform, this isn't a stealth signal to win the neonazi vote.? I hope not, it's just all kinds of brain switched to the off position.

And lastly, Donald Trump, and his family, because elections aren't just lost, they're won. And their message resonated with a large number of Americans. We could argue what we don't know forever, but it has to be true for it to have ever gotten this close, because he did not have the support of the republican party, the media, even fox news, and he did not buy any advertising and had essentially no backers. Even Rex Tillerson, who had given money to every GOP nominee in his career, didn't give money to the Trump campaign. And somehow wound up Secretary of State.

And it's thing like that which keep me in the wait and see camp.

The White House had predicted that the massive fiscal stimulus package, marked by the reduction in the corporate tax rate to 21 percent from 35 percent, would boost business spending and job growth. The tax cuts came into effect in January 2018.

The Trump administration’s $1.5 trillion cut tax package appeared to have no major impact on businesses’ capital investment or hiring plans, according to a survey released a year after the biggest overhaul of the U.S. tax code in more than 30 years.

The National Association of Business Economics’ (NABE) quarterly business conditions poll published on Monday found that while some companies reported accelerating investments because of lower corporate taxes, 84 percent of respondents said they had not changed plans. That compares to 81 percent in the previous survey published in October.

Learning what? That both sides are corrupt as fuck and don't give a shit about the working class? No kidding.

The last minimum wage increase was in 2009 by your hero. It was 70 whole cents per hour. 10 whole years of stagnation at the very bottom while the price of everything has gone up 50% on average. 58% of American's don't have a thousand bucks to their name in the case of emergency.

My point is, you don't have an alternative to argue for. Until you do, don't talk to me about my voting choices in this arena as if you know anybody who has the solution.

Consider today’s front page story:

Many families still struggle despite booming Texas economy, report says.
28% in Harris County earn too much for aid, too little to make ends meet.
www.pressreader.com/usa/houston-chronicle/20190129/281483572608102

There are no Republican lawmakers who will vote for $15/hour minimum. With them, it is a principle. The Democrats are a little better, being willing to increase the minimum, but only gradually, because 38% of voters are working at greater than $20/hour. Those better paid voters hate service workers being paid enough to join the middle-class. Those voters will punish Democratic lawmakers who raise the minimum. Sadly, the people making less than $20/hour aren't willing to force a raise and I do mean force, like punch their boss. When was the last time you even heard of somebody making close to minimum wage confronting their boss for a raise?

We need a National Holiday: Bring Your Gun To Work Day. Make your boss worried that somebody might actually fight back for higher wages.

Welcome to the new normal. I suggest everybody should start re-thinking how they shepherd the money they are able to make, rather than wishing on a star that the job market is ever going to improve.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Yeah. It's an extremely tricky subject.

Because of the way everything works, there's no saying if raising the minimum wage would even help. Not just because of the Republican scare stories about how everything will just cost more, which could be true, but because without an entire revamp to the numbers for public aid, it would immediately put millions of Americans outside of the reach of things like food stamps, medicaid, energy assistance, EIC, etc...

This means that even raising the minimum wage to 15 might not have any net positive impact on the lowest earning workers at all because of the large loss of public assistance that would immediately follow.

I'm in that situation now, and I only make about 50% above minimum wage. Without any kids, EBT is out of the question. I mean, I would be accepted, but I'd only be getting roughly 11 bucks a month for it. In an entire year I wouldn't get as much as I was getting per month at KMart on minimum wage. My point being that it's nice making a little more money, but it's almost zeroed out by loosing over $2,300 tax free in food stamps that I got at minimum wage.

Note that I'm not bitching here since I'm comfortable. I'm just stating the facts and I can really empathize with the situation you brought up and to those people who are truly treading water while this goes on.

Then... there's the other point that you make....

If somebody is making $20/hr right now. They're doing fairly well considering they're being compensated $12.75 more than the current federal minimum wage. You know they're not going to be given much if any of a boost if the minimum wage were raised to $15 overnight. So now they'd be doing the exact same job but only making $5 over the minimum wage. (A difference of 163% above minimum wage to only 25% over minimum wage virtually overnight). That's a problem.

[AND in my personal example above, I would now only be making minimum wage instead of 50% above it. The person above who was making $20 over the minimum wage before would now only be making 25% above minimum, which is half the percentage of what I make over it now, and less than 1/6th above what they make over it now. These are numbers I never hear anybody discussing, and they do matter.]

You can't blame people for not punching their bosses. I don't think you really mean that either. Not only would it be an immediate firing and loss of whatever crap wages they do get, but it would almost certainly end in their arrest.

Well, by the handwriting on the wall I can see we haven't learned anything.
Giving a shit and voting is our job, to ensure that the bums get it. Got it!?
When government doesn't work, you vote them out. Hence the BLUE WAVE. You guys had a turn, now step back, watch and learn. See how it's done. Whatever mess
the Republicans make, the Dems clean it up. Obama rolled up his sleeves and righted the economic ship. Granted there were some rough waters, but slowly he righted the ship: 10 years of prosperity, until this stupid fuck Trump comes along and says: "things are going too good, let me fix what ain't broke."

The top 1/4 of 1% are making all the money in the world (90%). So why are we not getting our share of it? Is it the president's fault? In 11 years I've gotten 3 raises. Why is that? Are Obama and Trump to blame? Who was it that gave the billionaires a tax cut? Go ahead, say it...it's okay, we all know:
Trump. Why? When they are already making money hand over fist? That's what
I'm getting at! Why the fuck give more money to people who are already making
obscene amounts and giving each other bonuses? The other day a billionaire
paid $238M for an apartment in New York. Meanwhile homelessness is on the rise.

By the way, I said nothing of your voting choice other than the general statement that it matters, and that "we" (the collective we) do matter and
can affect change. There's good and bad everywhere, but if "we" give up, well then "we" cannot complain.

If you don't care, there's no one to blame but the man in the mirror.

I am not kidding. Americans are spineless. They can't think of even one goddamn thing to do in order to improve their lives and then actually do it because it would be painful and scary. Voting for Trump is not one of those things. There was zero risk to a voter in the voting booth. There was zero possibility that Trump was sincere. I can think of plenty of things to improve their lives, but the cowards won't do any of them, which is why they are stuck. They won't ask for a raise. They won't move to a better place. They won't unionize. They won't confront as group that fucking bastard of a boss. They won't . . . why bother listing more? They won't do a damn thing.

There wasn't a blue wave. What happened in 2018 happens every mid-term when one "side" runs all three of 'em.

In the mean time, Congress always has a lower approval rating than the President does. Always.

Read a book.

Not really:

Meanwhile, Trump keeps proving the only things he's good at besides lying and sucking, is increasing division and voter turnout:

Sorry junior, data says that was a blue wave. You can call other midterms red waves, but 2018 was definitely a blue one.

Former leaders have been jailed or charged all over the world, but Trump bitterly complains about this kind of thing never happening before. It happens all the time in better-run countries than the US and should have happened sooner in the US. For example, Nixon should have been jailed but wasn't because he was pardoned. Another example with unfortunately far-reaching consequences was the slave-owning Confederate leadership of Robert E Lee, Jefferson Davis, and others who should have been punished but weren't because slave-owning President Andrew Johnson pardoned all of his fellow slave-owners. https://www.nps.gov/anjo/learn/historyculture/slaves.htm

The big picture: In reality, leaders who left office since 2000 have been jailed or prosecuted in at least 78 countries — including in democracies like France, Israel and South Korea. Since 1980, around half of the world's countries have had at least one such case, and that's not counting impeachments or coups. https://www.axios.com/2022/08/26/countries-where-former-leaders-jailed

Treason.

February 23, 2022 It took only 24 hours for Donald Trump to hail Russian President Vladimir Putin’s dismembering of independent, democratic, sovereign Ukraine as an act of “genius.”

The former President often accuses his enemies falsely of treason, but his own giddy rush to side with a foreign leader who is proving to be an enemy of the United States and the West is shocking even by Trump’s self-serving standards.

“Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort. No person shall be convicted of treason unless on the testimony of two witnesses to the same overt act, or on confession in open court.”

A person guilty of treason against the United States “shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.”
