America loves a winner!

I know some here will defend the man because of his good works to the ends of the Earth, but I cannot. I've no special affection for Nichole Kidman, btw. She seems decent enough, but that's not the issue. Joss is acting hypocritical and even irrationally. Hate to see it.

JOSS WHEDON ABANDONS HIS VALUES TO ATTACK NICOLE KIDMAN

I love Joss Whedon and his work. He’s also a man rightly celebrated for his track record of creating strong, complex female characters. This has earned him the status of ‘feminist icon’.

This is what makes his recent tweets about Nicole Kidman particularly surprising and disappointing.

In a recent interview with the BBC, Nicole Kidman responded to a question about Donald Trump by saying “I would just say he’s now elected,”… “and we as a country need to support whoever the president is, because that’s what the country’s based on.”

This strikes me as a particularly tepid and middle of the ground attempt at political analysis, but others did not share my approximation, leading to a sizeable backlash to her comments.

Amongst that backlash was this Joss Whedon tweet:

Kidman is dehumanised as (and has her appearance compared to) a puppet and labelled a ‘blunderturd’. Incisive, intelligent political engagement this is not.

Furthermore, why is shaming of women with reference to their appearance suddenly acceptable to Joss Whedon simply because they have a different perspective on how to proceed in a Trump USA?

It’s especially hypocritical when you consider Whedon retweeted this sentiment just days earlier:

It’s clear that what Whedon means is that he doesn’t much care for celebrities being shamed for speaking up in favour of politics that he is also in favour of.

It’s interesting that you can purport to be for strong, opinionated, independent women then throw those values out of the window the moment they express a view you do not agree with.

Had this type of thing been tweeted by a right-wing conservative, you can be sure that it would have been rounded on by the left as an example of ‘misogyny’.

I think it’s worth reminding Joss Whedon that Barack Obama made similar comments when Trump won the election, yet I cannot seem to locate any puppet-based invectives hurled in Obama’s direction from Joss’s Twitter feed.

A lot of people have a ‘let’s just get on with it’ attitude to the American election. Which is understandable. This is not the same thing as being a fan of Donald Trump.

‘I was trying to stress that I believe in democracy and the American Constitution, and it was that simple,’ said Nicole Kidman in response to this bizarre outrage over her comments.

If, like me, you loathe Donald Trump, then you need to help challenge this sort of thing from the mainstream left. The ‘they’re evil/stupid and we’re the good guys’ mentality was part of what helped Trump to get elected in the first place. And the continuation of this infantile, lazy tactic will only serve to make the same people vote for him again.

Let’s hope Joss remembers the principles he’s so vocally advocated for over the years and recognises this attack on Nicole Kidman for the wrongheaded approach that it is.

Oh, and bring back Firefly.

Joss Whedon is a liberal, and all that it implies. Like many partisans of both stripes, he can be supremely hypocritical about professing freedom and free speech until HIS particular political party is challenged and then ... watch out!

His remark about Speaker Ryan, and hoping he'd be horn raped by a Rhino , was exceedingly bizarre and graphic. Joss seems to be just lashing out now, wildly.

I wonder how he'd react if anyone had said that about Nancy Pelosi, Hillary Clinton or Michelle Obama.

OMG, the misogyny and hatred for a "strong woman " !!!

It's MLK weekend and Trump is attacking a civil rights hero so it's a good time to repost MLK:

I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanncr, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to “order” than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: “I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action”; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man’s freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a “more convenient season.”

Sorry to see that. Joss should be smarter/better than that. Surely he knows a thing or 3 about hate and contempt and how expressing it like that does very little to change the temperature in the room, and can even be counter productive to bringing about any kind of sensible dialogue or change. He must be really pissed.

People change as they become elevated in stature. Or is it that this elevation leads to people revealing more of who they really are?

Do you what to meet the real me now?

second - probably worthy for its own thread, about MLK Jr, but to be clear, Trump didn't " attack " John Lewis. He DEFENDED himself. You have a sitting US Representative straight out accuse Trump of some how benefiting from / working with the Russians to defraud Hillary in becoming President.

NO evidence.

NOTHING to back up his claim.

In many countries around the world, that would have gotten a person put in jail, or worse.

Mr. Lewis , despite his iconic status in the civil rights community, is not impervious from well deserved criticism.

THIS thread ? It was meant to highlight Joss's duplicity and hypocrisy.

One thing to lose touch with us " little people ", but Joss has also pulled a classic ' do as I say , not as I do ' maneuver.

Support celebs who speak out on politics, but not if they say something with which Joss disagrees.

Don't belittle women by reducing them to mere objects, or mock them for how they look. Joss goes completely 180 against what his entire message from Buffy was, because HE didn't like what was being said.

And to be clear, I don't think Nicole was wearing a MAGA t-shirt or Trump4Prez ball cap. Good grief.

I've liked some of his works since Cabin in the Woods. But man, to see him overreact to this degree, and show so much vitriol not just against Ryan, but Ms Kidman as well ? Freaking psycho.

I really have to consider what to do with ALL my stuff which pretty much has come from Joss.

2 copies of Firefly on DVD
2 copies of Serenity on DVD
1 CD of Firefly soundtrack.
1 CD from Buffy - Once more with Feeling
1 season of Angel on DVD
Firefly t-shirts, posters, 'Alliance' money, Browncoat soap, a Firefly lanyard, 1 mini Jaynes hat Christmas ornament, collection of Serenity comics ...

And can't forget the recent item... Serenity Christmas sweater.

Trump questioned Obama’s legitimacy many, many times.

Trump Dropped his False ‘Birther’ Theory, but Floated a New One: Clinton Started It
www.nytimes.com/2016/09/17/us/politics/donald-trump-birther-obama.html

Mr. Trump made no apology for and took no questions about what had amounted to a five-year-long smear of the nation’s first black president. Instead, he claimed, falsely, that questions about Mr. Obama’s citizenship were initially stirred by the Democratic presidential nominee, Hillary Clinton, in her unsuccessful primary contest against Mr. Obama in 2008.

Still, Mr. Trump’s brief remarks, tacked on to the end of a campaign appearance with military veterans at his new hotel in downtown Washington, represented a sharp reversal from a position he had publicly maintained, over howls of outrage from all but the far-right extreme of the political spectrum, since 2011.

As usual, you know nothing when it is convenient for you to act like an ignoramus. Nicole Kidman responded to a question about Donald Trump by saying “I would just say he’s now elected,”… “and we as a country need to support whoever the president is, because that’s what the country’s based on.” Doesn’t Nicole Kidman remember that Trump has been doing the opposite for five years to President Obama?

Kidman was doing what Reince Priebus, Trump's incoming chief of staff, did.

Priebus said that Obama should forget about the years of Republican birther attacks and step up to legitimize Trump's presidency.
www.politicususa.com/2017/01/15/trumps-chief-staff-demands-obama-forge
t-birthers-legitimize-trump.html

The Republican argument is basically that when a Democrat wins the White House, it is perfectly fine for them to spend eight years floating baseless conspiracy theory, but when a Republican wins the White House under circumstances that raised questions with 17 intelligence agencies, the country must rally around Trump.

Republicans created this mess by using racism and delegitimization as political tactics. Trump created his own problem by fighting with the US intelligence community while cozying up with Putin.

If Nicole Kidman wants to legitimize Trump and Trump wants legitimacy, he can earn it by coming clean on Russia. The outgoing and popular president shouldn’t lift a finger to legitimize a man who spent years trying to ruin his presidency with a racist conspiracy.

Trump’s lack of credibility in the eyes of the nation is not Barack Obama’s problem. And Nicole Kidman's opinion that Trump legitimately deserves our support is less than worthless, it is dishonest of her. But maybe Joss should just give her a pass because she is a woman and she might have forgotten or misunderstood all the important details about what Trump has done and what Trump is hiding from us. Trump promised to reveal his income tax returns and has not. That one tiny detail is enough to delegitimize him. He can fix that with one phone-call to his accountant, but Trump won't make the call.

Not off topic. Joss was mocking Nicole Kidman because she was either acting stupid or ignorant about Trump. That is why Joss compared her to a Trump puppet, much the same as Reince Priebus, Trump's incoming chief of staff is a puppet. If you wipe your memory clean of everything, then Joss looks like he abandoned his values by attacking a woman, but if you can remember Trump's recent history, then you see why Joss is disrespecting Kidman for what she did. If you are a Trumpist, then go ahead and despise Joss for taking a side against Trump and his supporters. No one will stop you.

Clinton actually DID start the Birtherism movement. There is video evidence of Hillary saying that during the Primaries before Trump ran with it.

Also, there are still investigations into the legitimacy of the document that was given to the people as his birth certificate and supposedly it is a forgery.

In a perverse twist, Trump may even have run for President as payback for a comedy routine: Obama’s lacerating takedown of him at the 2011 White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

Obama’s act—his public revenge for Trump’s birtherism—was a sophisticated small-club act. It was dry and urbane, performed in the cerebral persona that made Obama a natural fit when he made visits to, say, Marc Maron’s podcast or Seinfeld’s “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.”

In contrast, Trump was a hot comic, a classic Howard Stern guest. He was the insult comic, the stadium act, the ratings-obsessed headliner who shouted down hecklers. His rallies boiled with rage and laughter, which were hard to tell apart. You didn’t have to think that Trump himself was funny to see this effect: I found him repulsive, and yet I could hear those comedy rhythms everywhere, from the Rodney Dangerfield “I don’t get no respect” routine to the gleeful insult-comic slams of Don Rickles (for “hockey puck,” substitute “Pocahontas”) to Andrew Dice Clay, whose lighten-up-it’s-a-joke, it’s-not-him-it’s-a-persona brand of misogyny dominated the late nineteen-eighties. The eighties were Trump’s era, where he still seemed to live. But he was also reminiscent of the older comics who once roamed the Catskills, those dark and angry men who provided a cathartic outlet for harsh ideas that both broke and reinforced taboos, about the war between men and women, especially. Trump was that hostile-jaunty guy in the big flappy suit, with the vaudeville hair, the pursed lips, and the glare. There’s always been an audience for that guy.

Clinton actually DID start the Birtherism movement. There is video evidence of Hillary saying that during the Primaries before Trump ran with it.

Also, there are still investigations into the legitimacy of the document that was given to the people as his birth certificate and supposedly it is a forgery.

Getting back to Trump and his birther vendetta:
Quote:

Mr. Trump leveled the accusation — which his supporters have been pressing for weeks — that Mrs. Clinton first raised doubts eight years ago about Mr. Obama’s birthplace.

“Hillary Clinton and her campaign of 2008 started the birther controversy,” Mr. Trump said. “I finished it.”

During the 2008 Democratic contest, a senior strategist for Mrs. Clinton at one point pondered, in an internal memo that was later leaked, the ways in which Mr. Obama’s personal background differed from those of many Americans.

But contrary to Mr. Trump’s assertion, neither Mrs. Clinton nor her campaign ever publicly questioned Mr. Obama’s citizenship or birthplace.

The topic was such a fringe issue within the Republican Party that in 2011, conservatives, including Ann Coulter, now a vocal Trump supporter, called on Mr. Trump to stop pursuing it.

Mr. Trump’s aides, in a statement late Thursday, tried to argue that he had actually “ended” the birther issue. Mr. Trump’s spokesman, Jason Miller, asserted — also falsely — that Mr. Trump had “obtained” Mr. Obama’s birth certificate; the president actually released the long-form version in 2011.

“Mr. Trump did a great service to the president and the country by bringing closure to the issue that Hillary Clinton and her team first raised,” Mr. Miller said.

What Would Mal do ?

the good news is that now that a conservative republican is back in office and all the liberals are returning to their world of fear and loathing...we'll start to see a lot of great new movies and tv series where rebels are struggling to survive on the edge of the verse while elite leaders live the good life on the central core cities, break laws with impunity and laugh as they lie to the camera, abuse people with the power of IRS and other alphabet departments, etc...gee...shoulds just like the last 8 years under Obama but of course hollywood didn't see it that way...so I am truly looking forward to round 2 of a Firefly type show, maybe some boston legal, etc.. and just like last time.. I'll watch it through the eyes of a conservative christian middle age, middle class, white guy who sees that very same injustice, reason for fear, etc that the libs are crying about now that there is a change in leadership. I really like a lot of Joss work..just as I enjoy Kidman's acting work.. i don't need to hear from either one of them on their political views or lifestyle choices..they are fully entitled to their views..but when they are given a platform to speak that many of us don't have..then yeah...that level of fame comes with a price..and that can include backlash of opinions from us supporting fans who like the work but really would rather they just shut up and play their guitar.

Quote:

I have not consumed the entire thread yet, but I'd like to point out, in case nobody else has, that the marionette and name are certainly references to "Team America: World Police" which had all characters portrayed as marionettes, even the explicit sex scenes, and the Team was Thunderbirds, and their refrain was "Thunderbirds are GO" - just in case some thought the insult was made of whole cloth.

I do consider Joss to be quite hypocritical regarding feminism, including this instance.

I don't think the specifics of who or what the marionette was , looked like or what had all that much bearing on the simple fact that Joss chose to mock Nichole with the comparison because she had the audacity to speak her mind.

And ' Blunderturds ' ?? Really?

Joss might as well just have posted a pic of aforementioned sex scenes and just photoshopped Nichole's face onto the marionette, just for extra added insult. ( I actually bet he or someone did that, but chose not to use it. Yet. )

I thought Liberals were better than, above the rest of us. And it doesn't get more glaring at the double standard when one puts this out just DAYS after retweeting about why celebs shouldn't be mocked for speaking out. It's a 'DEMOCRACY', after all !! We're ALL suppose to speak up !!

( as long as we speak and think in the group approved manner, of course. )

Smart people have standards, such as not being initiated into a CULT. Hence she is an idiot. I stand by my assessment.

I have many issues with organized religion, but Scientology is the very definition of CULT.

Or marrying disabled spouses who will be a tremendous "itch" for life (If you marry for life ) or at least have a serious commitment to that person .... you will make adjustments. What if your chosen spouse is jealous, or violent, or allergic to gainful work, or prefers threesomes? My point, WISHY, is that there are a MYRIAD of "deficiencies" that a spouse can exhibit .... some of which don't reveal themselves until after marriage .... that are far worse than being in A CULT. Why draw the line there?

ALL organized religions are cults. I fail to see the distinction between one cult and another, so please enlighten me.

To me, being brainwashed IS the worst thing, right up there with Alzheimer's. But then, I actually consider ability to reason to be an important thing... Go fig.

Yeah, everybody on the internets says that but the difference between a religion and a cult is a religion purports to want you do be more moral, even if others may not agree with the moral, and thinks it is taking care of a "soul".

A cult is STRICTLY about power. They want to own you and your possessions and leave no room to think for yourself. A religion will let you leave, maybe not be happy about it, but they don't normally put you in camps you can't leave and force you to have abortions because THEY want your money.

It's like the difference between sex and rape. The fact that they intentionally seek out people with mental problems and stop them from taking medication is also like rape, but of a child. The literally take advantage of mentally compromised people.

Most of their money is also in land holdings, their goal is to buy entire states. Tell me that isn't scarier than a religion!

I disagree. Some cult figures have committed suicide with their followers. Suicide is the biggest relinquishment of power that anyone can do. As far as I can tell, the only difference between a "cult" and a "religion" is that one isn't accepted by society and the other is.

Weirdness was Joss posting the side by side pic of Nichole and some marionette in the first place. You know, making fun of a woman's appearance as a means of insulting her for speaking out... exactly what he claimed he DIDN'T stand for. Oh well.
