The desire of House Democrats to avoid confusing the issue by turning their impeachment inquiry into a sprawling investigation or a comprehensive accounting of Donald Trump’s crimes is understandable. And certainly if Senate Republicans indicate that they are prepared to hold Trump accountable in exchange for Democrats agreeing to act swiftly so that the country can move on, Democrats should do the responsible thing and remove Trump from office ASAP.

But there’s no indication that’s happening. Instead, among Republicans, only Sen. Mitt Romney has spoken about Trump’s misconduct with any degree of clarity, and even Romney hasn’t said he deems the total subversion of American foreign policy to necessarily be an impeachable offense.

If Republicans are going to stand by Trump regardless, there is absolutely no reason to cut the impeachment inquiry short or artificially limit its scope.
The volume of leaks coming out of the Trump White House sometimes creates the impression that we have visibility into what’s really happening there. The moral of the Ukraine story is that isn’t true. A whistleblower’s memo brought new facts to light that were previously being covered-up. And the memo itself was nearly covered up. The launching of the formal inquiry has brought forth fruitful testimony from government officials who were apparently planning to stay silent otherwise.

It’s certainly possible that Trump’s corrupt dealings with Ukraine is the only example of him attempting dirty deals with foreign leaders. But it’s also quite possible it’s just the only example we happen to know about.

What we know for sure is that there are other call records that have been inappropriately kept on a super-classified server in order to shield their contents from other people in the government. Unless Republicans start showing some immediate interest in removal over Ukraine it would be political malpractice to not look into what’s happening during Trump’s calls with leaders of countries like Turkey, Russia, and Saudi Arabia.

I want them to drag it out forever.

2020 is going to make 2016 look like a holiday when Democrats get smashed after more than a year of an impeachment inquiry leading to nothing before Trump's re-election.

I suspect quite a few people will snap at that point.

I don't want to see violence brought about by these idiot rich people, but if and when Trump wins after a long drawn out impeachment process and there is violence, I think the Legacy Media is going to have a very hard time continuing to push the narrative that Democrat voters are the sane ones while Republican voters are not.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

We'll find out in about a month or so G. Since Trump included the TV audience in his calculations determining crowd size, I don't see why we can't. I bet it's going to be a whopper of a number.

No. No it is not.

Even if it does, impeachment doesn't mean anything.

lol

This will be hilarious to see your reaction when you finally figure that out.

Once again, I really do hope it happens. It will guaranty that Trump gets re-elected, when as it stands he has only about a 95% chance of being re-elected right now.

Hmmm, I'm not to sure that it's been a year of impeachment inquiry. It might seem like it because so much has happened. I seem to remember news of Trump's illegal activity was around September of this year, you know, that whole Ukraine thing. To be sure:

Fact-Checking 5 Claims About the Impeachment Inquiry

President Trump and his defenders have inaccurately attacked the impeachment inquiry for what they say are procedural and constitutional violations, a faulty premise and a lack of support.

http://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/12/us/politics/fact-check-impeachment.h
tml

The article was written October 12, 2019 (hardly a year ago)

Here’s a fact check of some of their most-invoked claims.

WHAT WAS SAID

“In the 240-plus years of our history, those rare times where we have had impeachment process, it’s always gone through the House Judiciary Committee, because the House Judiciary Committee is the committee of jurisdiction over the Constitution and over impeachment. It’s not the Intelligence Committee.”
— Representative John Ratcliffe, Republican of Texas, in an interview this month

False.

In her announcement last month initiating formal impeachment proceedings against Mr. Trump, Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she had directed six committees — including the Intelligence Committee, whose chairman, Adam B. Schiff of California, has drawn Mr. Trump’s ire — to proceed with investigations under “that umbrella of impeachment inquiry.”
(from the article, read it).

Pelosi and company have stated that they will vote this coming Thursday for Impeachment. So, the Republicans get their wish.

As for the rest, no one will "snap" - we will just endure another four miserable years. Of course, be prepared for Trump's attempt to override the Constitution and push for "President for Life" as he's hinted at on a few occasions (mainly as test balloons).

As to violence:

It's funny you mention that. This is what Trump has called for almost from the beginning. This is furthering his fear tactic, and like with most bullies, you have to meet it head on. But I don't wish it on anyone. Unfortunately, it must be dealt with, if that were ever to happen. But imagine, Americans fighting and possibly killing, Americans (I just don't see it). That hasn't happened since the Civil War. It is, to me, unthinkable.

It actually hasn't yet been a single day, SGG. They haven't even had the vote to figure out whether or not they're going to start an impeachment inquiry investigation that will determine whether or not they're going to vote on impeachment.

What I was referring to was the future. If they finally stop sitting around and doing nothing but giving empty promises that they're going to do it, and they start it by the first week of November, it will have been a year of impeachment inquiry by Election Day.

Quote:

No. What they're doing, if they actually do it this time, is voting this coming Thursday on whether or not to start an impeachment inquiry investigation that may or may not one day lead to a vote on whether or not to impeach Trump. Then, if that actually happens, it dies on the Senate floor.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

More bad testimony showing Trump abused his power by trying to extort a foreign country. That he tried to extort Ukraine into digging up dirt on an American in an up and coming election. Opps...

Remember this G. Since the election these two have been breaking the law. It never stopped and now it's all coming home to roost. Trump will be impeached by the house in a month or so, and Giuliani is going to jail if he doesn't start to sing.

Now I know the trolls like to point out how long it is taking, but being trolls their stupid. We're talking about the most powerful man in the world, well, he does get played by everyone he has to deal with, even so it takes a lot to take him down. Mostly because the republicans are so corrupt.

It sounds good, that impeachment is so slow because the President is so powerful, but the problem is endemic to the American legal system. In Houston, a murder trial started 5 years after the murder, but it was not delayed because the murderer was unknown. What held up the trial was the legal system doesn't function smoothly. He was convicted, but nobody knows how many decades until he is executed since the legal system moves slowly.

Another example that is more fascinating:
www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2019/10/judge-william-alsup-is-the-man-

The moral of that story is that with enough money and lawyers, a Corporation, or a President, can delay. And then delay some more by adding as much friction as the President's lawyers can devise.

Trump believes, and is almost certainly correct, that his impeachment will be dead on arrival at the Senate, even before the prosecution begins presenting its case. This is because he can manipulate Senators. Many senators are publicly positioning themselves as impartial by leaning on their future roles as jurors, yet they accept personal phone calls from Trump about . . . impeachment. I wonder what the word "impartial" means in the GOP dictionary?

Sitting inside the White House, Mitch McConnell gave Donald Trump some straightforward advice: Stop attacking senators — including Mitt Romney — who likely will soon judge your fate in an impeachment trial.

After McConnell's advice, Trump stopped attacking GOP senators.

The president’s team is betting that the cult of his personality and the power of his prolific Twitter feed will keep senators on his side.

The White House is largely leaving the prickly task of managing the Senate Republican Conference to McConnell. Though much of the pair's contact is concealed even from aides, people familiar with the conversations say they speak all the time — and there’s been an uptick in recent weeks as the impeachment threat grows more serious.

McConnell is helped by the president’s other close allies in the chamber, including GOP Sens. David Perdue of Georgia and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, who traveled with Trump on Friday and golfed with him Saturday. All three help the White House indirectly communicate with other senators, an administration official said.

That’s not to say the president has fully gone hands-off. Last Thursday he hosted 10 Republicans in the Situation Room for a meeting on Middle East policy, including several senators who had called his conversation with the Ukrainian president about Joe Biden inappropriate. After the meeting, they gathered in the ornate Roosevelt Room, where Trump vented about impeachment.

“He wants to make sure people (GOP Senators) understand his argument. His case. And he doesn’t believe he did anything wrong. He thinks the call, as he described it, was perfectly appropriate. And so, I think much of it is just to help our members to better understand a little about where he’s coming from and why he believes that this is a rigged process on behalf of the Democrats.”

It will be the House which must dig up Trump's skeletons and decide what to do with them because the Senate is helpless. If the rotten old bones are laid out for every voter to see, there is a slightly increased chance Trump won't be reelected. But if the House stops digging after investigating a phone call to Ukraine, then sends the case to the Senate, Trump's chances of reelection will be unchanged. His reelection chances might even improve once the Senate declares Trump NOT GUILTY, which I am certain the Senate will do.

Trump's tax returns are where the real dirt is, and the House has not even started auditing:

To hear CNN and MSNBC talk, that was the mistake they made by giving Trump all of that free press. Now he's got over $300 Million in campaign funds and growing for his re-election bid and doesn't need them.

The problem with keeping the camera and microphone on him 24/7 is that there are arguably more people who like what he's doing than don't, at least in states where it matters. It makes no matter if you get a few extra million votes against Trump in states like California or New York.

The 26 smallest states, which together elect a majority of Senate seats, make up only 18 percent of the population. www.nationalreview.com/2018/09/states-key-to-senate-legitimacy/

Using different numbers, Noam Chomsky mentioned 20% of Americans living in the smallest states elect the majority of Senators. Although Trump has done enough to be impeached 100 times, Chomsky is certain that craven Senators won’t remove Trump, because Trump gives that 20% what they want. What does Trump want? Chomsky mentioned that Trump is having fun watching the World burn. The A/C in DC is working fine, keeping Trump comfortable. – The Noam Chomsky Interview on impeachment, October 31, 2019:

You are right about Trump. Another impeachable offense that the Senate will ignore:

President Trump dropped a stunner during his rambling press conference, on Sunday, after announcing the death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the Islamic State leader, in a U.S. raid. In a major policy flip-flop, the President said that he is not only keeping American forces in Syria to “secure” its oil fields, he is willing to go to war over them. “We may have to fight for the oil. It’s O.K.,” he said. “Maybe somebody else wants the oil, in which case they have a hell of a fight. But there’s massive amounts of oil.” The United States, he added, should be able to take some of Syria’s oil. “What I intend to do, perhaps, is make a deal with an ExxonMobil or one of our great companies to go in there and do it properly,” he said. The goal would be to “spread out the wealth.”

The President was wrong on so many counts. Seizing the oil, after twice ordering all U.S. troops out of Syria, violates a basic international treaty on war. It may amount to pillaging—even piracy, according to legal experts and former senior military commanders. “Bring in US oil companies to modernize the field. WHAT ARE WE BECOMING…. PIRATES?” General Barry McCaffrey (Ret.), who commanded a mechanized Army division in Iraq during the Gulf War, tweeted.

Trump’s new policy may also violate the military authorization from Congress which allowed the United States to enter Syria. It certainly violates Syrian sovereignty. “If ISIS is defeated we lack Congressional authority to stay,” McCaffrey tweeted. “The oil belongs to Syria.”

Trump’s suggestion that the U.S. could expropriate a portion of Syria’s oil “sounds like the international crime of pillage,” Ryan Goodman, a former special legal counsel at the Department of Defense who is now at the New York University School of Law, said. Any such move is prohibited by the Geneva Conventions and by the precedents set by the United Nations war-crimes tribunals that the U.S. helped establish in Yugoslavia, Rwanda, and Sierra Leone. “U.S. military commanders who engaged in pillaging Syria’s oil would risk criminal liability under the U.S. War Crimes Act,” Goodman said. The international rules of war, he added, were designed “to deter nations from engaging in predatory wars to seize other countries’ natural resources.”

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Well, Turkey in Syria is what happens when US democrats makes promises - like to the Kurds - the US can't in reality keep.

The US had token forces along the border - about 50 troops - not much more than a literal line in the sand. Should Turkey want to do something, there were few choice: - keep insufficient troops in place and have them get slaughtered; - remove troops from harm's way; - beef troops up to a fighting force and be prepared to engage in full-scale .W.A.R. with Turkey. (As I mentioned earlier, the final hold on Erdogan was the US dollar and sanctions; and Turkey slipped the noose when it joined the SWIFT alternative. One month later, Turkey moved on Syria.)

So, why are there troops in Syria at all? It wasn't actually to protect the Kurds, as we have seen. Instead, it was to take and hold the oil fields ... as we have seen. Troops were withdrawn from the Kurds, and repositioned from all of Syria, to protect our REAL interests, which is the industrial-scale theft of oil from the NE Syrian oil fields. Trump told you all the truth: "The oil is protected.". ... except protected should read "protected".

Like the US making-nice with Salman of Saudi Arabia (petrodollar) after Khashoggi's murder, we get to see the US's REAL interests play out.

And it's what the US has been doing all these decades, even if in the past it was hidden behind pretty-sounding narratives (freedom! capitalism!) that they (successfully) propagandized (you all) with. Now it's just out in the open.

Deal with reality.

Or not. Honestly, I don't care about the state of your (all) mental health. Live in your propagandist-narrative fantasy for all I care.

And if democrats don't do anything different, how are they any better?

ETA: Signy's been saying the same thing FAR before me. But you (all) are too idiotically tribal (and propagandized) to see reality when it up and smacks you in the face.

Noam Chomsky on Trump
https://theintercept.com/2019/10/31/deconstructed-special-the-noam-cho
msky-interview
/

Noam Chomsky: The current moment is the most grim moment in human history and the wrecking ball in the White House just doesn’t give a damn. He’s having fun. He’s serving his rich constituency. So what the hell, let’s destroy the world. The only policy that you can discern clearly in the Trump administration is a very simple one: me. Anything that benefits me I’ll do no matter what the consequences. If it destroys the world, okay.

Q: Am I right in saying that you didn’t support President Trump’s decision to withdraw U.S. troops from the front lines in Syria?

Noam Chomsky: That’s correct. For a long time, I’ve been trying to organize support for opposition to the withdrawal.

Q: And why is that?

Noam Chomsky: Because the, from the left at least, the call for withdrawal was based on anti-imperialist principles. But principles have to be understood in connection with the human reality of the existing circumstances. A small, U.S. contingent with the sole mission of deterring a planned Turkish invasion, which was obvious, is not imperialism. It’s protecting the Kurds from an expansion of the atrocities and massacres that Erdogan has been carrying out both within Turkey itself and in the areas of Syria that he’s already conquered.

Q: And a lot of people listening especially on the left might be surprised to hear you say this. They might say Noam Chomsky, we associate him with anti-interventionism, with opposition to U.S. foreign policy, and U.S. military interventions abroad. Why are the Kurds the exception to that, you know, life-long, career-long opposition to U.S. military interventions, especially in the Middle East?

Noam Chomsky: If you take a look at what’s happening, it’s not intervention. Syria was already invaded by Turkey. The troops that are there were essentially doing nothing except deterring an expansion of a further invasion. You have to not deal with slogans as if it’s a religious catechism. You have to ask how they apply in particular to complex human circumstances.

Chomsky is not much into military tactics, but U.S. troops on the ground are backed by tank-killing planes in the air. Erdogan knows this even if 1kiki is unaware. Erdogan also knows that if he can make Trump fear losing Trump Towers Istanbul, the planes won't be in the air. Really, it should be impeachable for a President to own property that can be confiscated, especially when Trump had years to sell that property.
