The Mueller hearing was a debacle for Democrats. The new impeachment rules show that they’ve learned the lesson that it is very easy to sabotage an ordinary congressional hearing.

In the typical hearing, members of Congress each spend five minutes — and only five minutes — questioning a witness or panel of witnesses. Question time ordinarily alternates between Democrats and Republicans.

This process generates a number of easily foreseeable problems. It is inevitable that some members will be more effective questioners than others, but the five-minute rule allows witnesses to filibuster particularly effective questioners until that member’s time runs out. The five-minute rule also means that members do not have enough time to conduct deep, probing inquiries or to ask a long series of follow-up questions that could uncover answers a witness would rather keep hidden.

The fact that question time typically alternates between partisans, moreover, means that the minority can disrupt an effective line of questioning by shifting the topic to irrelevant accusations or outright conspiracy theories. A July hearing featuring former Special Counsel Robert Mueller was a disaster for Democrats for many reasons, but one reason was that it is hard to keep focus on a serious line of inquiry when that inquiry is constantly being interrupted by members ranting about Russian false flags or submitting pieces they wrote for Fox News host Sean Hannity’s website into the record.

Ohio Sen. Rob Portman tested a Republican response to impeachment. “I thought it was inappropriate for the president to ask a foreign government to investigate a political opponent,” he said. “I also do not think it’s an impeachable offense.”

Portman's answer conspicuously, even deceptively, ignores the issue at hand. A decision about impeachment not only involves the response to a specific act — say, a third-rate burglary. It necessarily entails a judgment about the fitness for high office of the actor. In Trump’s case, the problem is not a slimy phone call in a lifetime of slimy phone calls. The problem is a president who puts his personal interests ahead of U.S. national security and who still finds nothing wrong with his “perfect” conversation. The corrupt act reveals a corrupt man, unable to make the most rudimentary judgments about the nation’s good.

If the best of the Republican Party is willing to make shallow, shoddy excuses for an unfit president, then the path ahead is disturbingly clear. The details of the case for impeachment will not matter. Fearing the revolt of their base — and the retribution of an emotionally unstable president — Senate Republicans (with one admirable exception, Utah’s Mitt Romney) have already chosen their final position: acquittal. And whatever is revealed in the course of the investigation — no matter how vomitous — will fall just short of an impeachable offense. The goal posts will move and move until they are in the next county.

Opinions, opinions, opinions.

Don't talk about others moving the goalposts when that is exactly what you're doing.

We've heard about your opinions of Trump for 3 years now and we don't care.

If there is not an impeachable offense, which there isn't, then you have nothing.

This whole process ensures Trump's re-election in 2020. Glad the idiots finally started to move forward with it.

Yanno, this whole hysteria reminds me of the RUSSIA!!RUSSIA!! hoax. But more than that, it reminds me of the Kavanaugh hearings ... remember them ? ... where one delusional "witness" after another claimed to have heard ... or possibly recalled... or maybe someone said that someone said... and then vomitted a bunch of bias and spew.

Anyone who takes this seriously should have their head examined.

And now the (so-called) "whistleblower"* who set off this chain of events based on secondhand information refuses to testify, and the House isn't going to compel him and even isn't in negotiation with the second "witness" who intially supported the whistleblower's claims.

Quote:

Trump-Ukraine Whistleblower Suddenly Won't Testify; Lawyers Break Off Negotiations Amid New Revelations

A CIA officer who filed a second-hand whistleblower complaint against President Trump has gotten cold feet about testifying after revelations emerged that he worked with Joe Biden, former CIA Director John Brennan, and a DNC operative who sought dirt on President Trump from officials in Ukraine's former government.

According to the Washington Examiner, discussions with the whistleblower - revealed by RealClearInvestigations as 33-year-old Eric Ciaramella have been halted, "and there is no discussion of testimony from a second whistleblower, who supported the first's claims."

Ciaramella complained that President Trump abused his office when he asked Ukraine to investigate corruption allegations against Joe Biden and his son Hunter, as well as claims related to pro-Clinton election interference and DNC hacking in 2016.

On Thursday, a top National Security Council official who was present on a July 25 phone call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky testified that he saw nothing illegal about the conversation.

"I want to be clear, I was not concerned that anything illegal was discussed," said Tim Morrison, former NSC Senior Director for European Affairs who was on the July 25 call between the two leaders.

And now, the partisan whistleblowers have cold feet;

"There is no indication that either of the original whistleblowers will be called to testify or appear before the Senate or House Intelligence committees. There is no further discussion ongoing between the legal team and the committees," said the Examiner's source.

The whistleblower is a career CIA officer with expertise in Ukraine policy who served on the White House National Security Council during the Obama administration, when 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden was "point man" for Ukraine, and during the early months of the Trump administration. -Washington Examiner

In other words, House Democrats are about to impeach President Trump over a second-hand whistleblower complaint by a partisan CIA officer, and neither he nor his source will actually testify about it (for now...).

Until the Senate trial, that is.

I mean, Jeezus, don't you people remember back even one year?

I think you have NO IDEA how egregiously and how often the deep state will twist your heads, and NO IDEA how fundamentally corrupt Democratic politicians are, especially those at the highest levels. (Not saying that they're any worse the Repubs, but they're just as bad.)

Trump’s manufacturing policy looks like Obama’s policy. There is no break in the lines, where the data goes in a new direction. Somebody should ask Trump about that during the impeachment hearings.

It sure does look as if Trump just gave up on making Estimates of the Unauthorized Immigrant Population Residing in the United States. Could that be because Trump is NOT actually reducing faster than Obama the number of illegals residing in the US? Somebody should ask Trump during the impeachment hearings.

And while Trump is being questioned, ask him to show the first two pages of his income tax returns for 2016 to 2019. Everybody needs to know if the President is actually paying anything. Online you can find every year of Obama's and Bush's tax returns. Where is Trump's? I'd love to hear his explanation of why he paid nothing, while he is under oath not to lie.

While Trump is being impeached, the Senate might want to ask him what he was thinking when he made bone-headed decisions. Here are two examples from many at www.vox.com/2019/11/4/20940804/mattis-trump-snodgrass-holding-line-boo
k
:

Guy Snodgrass
There’s no doubt that there was just chaos throughout the administration with how decision-making was formulated. Look, there was no notice ahead of the Space Force creation announcement, even though I had queried the White House that day asking, “Hey, will there be a statement on that? We’re not really tracking.” Then the White House tells me that only some unrelated space directive will be announced, to which I responded, “Great.”

And then literally as we watch it live, President Trump points at General Joe Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs and says, “General, we’re creating a Space Force. You got me? Let’s go.” And 15 minutes later the phone rings and you look at the caller ID. It’s John Kelly, the chief of staff at the White House calling to say, “Surprise. He just directed the creation of the Space Force.”

Here’s your Department of Defense. Easily your largest department within the administration, responsible for an over $700 billion annual budget, kept in the dark about this large announcement. That was repeated time and time again.

Alex Ward
As it was with the trans military ban.

Guy Snodgrass
Right, it’s like the defining characteristic of the administration and why it was so difficult to actually enact many of the policy decisions the president wanted to see put in place. He wasn’t setting up his team up for success.

Mattis knew without a shadow of a doubt, as many others did, that the transgender ban decision would be highly contested. It was of significant political interest, and it would be contested in the courts. We wanted to make sure that it was arrived at legally, ethically, and underpinned by a lot of facts.

We communicated that to the White House, and the president approved our deliberate approach. We were two or three months into that process, and we were sure we had the top cover. And then as soon as Mattis went to Washington state to spend some time with his mother, bam! Here comes the tweet, and it’s out of nowhere, saying, in effect, “In consultation with generals, transgender individuals are hereby banned from military service.”

We had no heads-up. Our chief of staff had no heads-up. The chairman of the Joint Chiefs had no heads-up.

Alex Ward
What did you do about it?

Guy Snodgrass
We were scrambling to figure out what it all meant and what we had to do about it. Mattis was able to intercede and work with the president and then-chief of staff Kelly to get to a better resolution. But those tweets imperiled the president’s own decision because he could’ve had a legally defensible, well-thought position, yet he undercut it with those three tweets.

Yeah... you're not going to get 2.

Nancy Pelosi didn't even want to do 1, but she was forced to by the Leftist extremists and by Trump himself and his constant goading.

Trump has gotten exactly what he wanted here every step of the way.

He was practically begging for Impeachment by continually tweeting that the only way the Democrats win in 2020 is if he is removed from office.

Then he got the GOP to force Pelosi to have an actual formal vote on impeachment instead of dragging all of this out behind the scenes. A vote, I might add, that was directly down partisan lines with two Democrats voting against impeachment.

Those two Democrats will be re-elected in 2020. Many others will not be when this backfires spectacularly. This is a huge embarassment to the Democrats already, even though hard core partisans on the left might not realize it yet.

It will get worse though. Especially when people start to realize that the only people in the country that were on board with this were the ones screaming about Trump for the last three years that were never going to vote for him anyways. Independents will break for Trump in 2020 overall, and just like our two Democrat Representatives who broke for Trump, you're going to see some Democrat voters doing the same. Especially those who are Union members.

If you ever looked at Texas, the parts that vote Democratic are 60% of the economy, and the parts that vote Republican are 40%, but the Republican voters outnumber the Democrats. It's kind of an indication that Republicans are neither as smart nor as hardworking individuals as they imagine themselves, which would explain why white Texans who love Trump have too many personal and household economic problems. So sad for the Trump lovers who cannot compete economically with Trump haters. It must really seem unfair to Trump lovers. Too bad, but voting for him a second time will not change their inferior situation. Reelecting Trump will certainly make me, a Trump hater, richer. Please vote for Trump.

Did you ever notice that dumb white boys who voted for Trump keep posting the exact same comments, again and again? Did you ever notice that economically weak states such as N. & S. Dakota, W. Virginia, Mississippi, Alabama, Indiana voted for Trump? Were those states expecting to rise in the economic ranking? If they were, they should have noticed it did not happen. Hopefully, those poor states will double down on Trump, making me richer in Texas. I look forward to Trump winning, although I won't touch the button on the voting machine for him with a ten foot pole.

Did you ever notice that dumb who voted for Trump keep posting the exact same comments, again and again? Did you ever notice that economically weak states such as N. & S. Dakota, W. Virginia, Mississippi, Alabama, Indiana voted for Trump? Were those states expecting to rise in the economic ranking? If they were, they should have noticed it did not happen.

Bingo...

Despite his constant public derision of the mainstream media, President Trump worries over the daily coverage of the Ukraine scandal and impeachment inquiry.

“We’re getting fucking killed,” a Republican close to the White House told Politico, quoting Trump’s main concern. “He does make that comment literally every day.”

Trump Tweets Alone Because He Doesn’t Like Being Seen in Glasses

Trump’s obsession with the image of his presidency has become a cornerstone of his presidency, whether it’s his need to hire stern-looking staffers from “central casting”; firing pollsters for making him look bad; or refusing to be seen outside of a suit. New to the list, provided in an extensive report on Trump’s Twitter use published by the New York Times, is that he prefers to tweet alone because he doesn’t like to wear the reading glasses he needs to see his phone screen.

As a natural bully with dated social mores who doesn’t read and is concerned with looking tough, there’s an intuitive level of sense to Trump’s desire not to wear, or be seen wearing, reading glasses. As someone who has made fun of people for wearing glasses — and said in 2014 that he was “too vain” — to wear them, it’s quite possible that he does not consider them appropriate for the image of his presidency.

I don't see how the Fairness Doctrine would do what you want it to do. All of the Legacy Media shills for the Democrats 24/7 now anyway. Fox News doesn't count, because it could be argued both that they're anti-Trump, and for certain any drones that sit and watch it every day are hard core Republicans that would never vote the other way to save their life anyhow.

Other than them, pretty much everybody is Democrat all day long.

Could you explain to me how you think the Fairness Doctrine would help the Democrats chances in 2020 in the slightest? I don't think that they could possibly put any more pro Democrat stuff out there.

Rather than this impeachment sucking up all the media time, the media should be reporting 10 times a day until the accords expire that Trump won't negotiate and renew nuclear treaties. He is always claiming he is the best negotiator, but he is actually doing nothing, which should be an impeachable offense:

Already this year, the U.S. has withdrawn from the 1987 Intermediate Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty, which obliged the U.S. and the Soviet Union to destroy all of their ground-launched ballistic and cruise missiles with flight ranges between 500 and 5,500 kilometers. Whereas previous administrations have largely sought to sustain arms control agreements, Trump has shown no affinity for international pacts. Having abandoned the Paris Agreement on climate change, the Iran nuclear agreement and the INF treaty, his string of broken legacy accords now appears likely to stretch further.

Impeach Trump for dropping the ball:

"The ball is now in the Americans' court," Interfax quotes the Russian Foreign Ministry's Vladimir Leontyev as telling reporters. "We are looking forward to their decision and to them saying who will represent them and when we can resume our discussions on strategic stability issues."

But the Trump administration shows little inclination to play ball. A senior White House official said in May that President Trump will not make a decision about extending the only remaining major nuclear accord with Russia until next year. The U.S. State Department has been without a top nuclear weapons negotiator since Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security Andrea Thompson quit in September.

It may already be too late to work out an extension of New START. Russia's Foreign Ministry contends that with the time that remains before the treaty's Feb. 5, 2021, expiration, it will be impossible to complete a new document that could extend the arms pact.

I agree.

I also see that you don't disagree with my assessment of the Fairness Doctrine, or lack thereof either.

Democrats are on their way to losing even bigger this time, and it's because they're not learning from lessons of the past and focusing on all of the wrong things.

There's still time left. Build a platform.

But don't do Warren's M4A one, I guess. Everybody on the left and the right has slammed her for that and she's losing against Biden in every poll in the aggregate now.

Also, to note, the NYT just put out an article showing that she loses every battle ground state to Trump except for one. In the same poll, Bernie loses the battleground states to Trump as well. Laughably, they have Biden winning most of them, but that would change quickly when Trump destroys Biden on the debate stage.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

If you think GOP Senators will vote GUILTY, think again:

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said he will not even read the transcripts released by impeachment investigators. Graham’s refusal to read the transcript came after Graham demanded the House release full transcripts from the closed-door depositions. Graham also told Axios that he would support Trump’s impeachment if he saw that the president “was engaging in a quid pro quo” outside of his July 25 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which is exactly what Gordon Sondland, the ambassador to the EU, confirmed this week. But Graham won't support impeachment, after all.

Asked about Sondland revising his testimony to explicitly say that hundreds of millions of dollars in aid to Ukraine was blocked to force a public announcement of the investigation over the course of numerous meetings, Graham replied, “Well, that’s his opinion.”

Graham proceeded to suggest that Sondland, a millionaire hotel developer who donated $1 million to Trump’s inauguration before being installed in his post, was just a government “bureaucrat.”

Another impeachable offense: In order to raise his approval rating with voters, Trump wants to pardon guilty-as-hell soldiers convicted of murder.

Defense Secretary Mark Esper will urge President Donald Trump not to dismiss or change the sentences of service members facing war crimes allegations, CNN has learned.

Trump ordered a review of charges against Army Lt. Clint Lorance and Army Green Beret Maj. Matt Golsteyn, and is reportedly considering restoring the rank of Navy SEAL Eddie Gallagher, according to a Monday report on "Fox & Friends," the President's favorite morning show. With Veterans Day approaching on Nov. 11th, Fox News reported that Trump could make an announcement about the three men within a week.

That report from Fox surprised top Pentagon officials and galvanized them to take swift action to head off the President, administration officials said.

Attorney General Declined Trump Request to Declare Nothing Illegal in Ukraine Call

President Trump asked Attorney General William P. Barr to hold a news conference stating that no laws were broken in his call with Ukraine’s president. Mr. Barr declined.

www.nytimes.com/2019/11/06/us/politics/trump-william-barr-ukraine-call
.html

President Trump wanted Attorney General William P. Barr to hold a news conference declaring that the commander in chief had broken no laws during a phone call in which he pressed his Ukrainian counterpart to investigate a political rival, though Barr ultimately declined to do so, people familiar with the matter said.

It is unclear why Trump has not fired Attorney General Barr over his insubordination toward the President, but it might be the same situation as with Attorney General Jeff Session: Trump is waiting until after the Nov 3, 2020 election before he boots out Barr.

I see that the goddamn liar is denying everything: Trump denies asking Attorney General William Barr to defend his Ukraine call in news conference

ukraine-call.html

If Congress can find witnesses to testify that Trump is lying, that is another impeachable offense. But, all too obviously, no GOP Senator will vote GUILTY, so the whole point of impeaching Trump is moot.

My favorite hobbyhorse, Trump's tax cheating, does not require a vote of Senators. If the House of Representatives find that Trump underpaid, Trump won't be able to wiggle out of paying, but he can delay until he is either dead or runs out of tax court appeals. He won't voluntarily pay, I predict. He will fight to the death. Or move to Florida, to continue the fight in a Southern Federal Court, which might be more likely than a New York Federal Court to allow his lawyers to delay.
