ay-not-know

1 We are supposed to have a government “of the people, by the people, for the people”, but only 25 percent of all Americans know how long U.S. Senators are elected for (6 years), and only 20 percent of all Americans know how many U.S. senators there are.

#2 Americans spend more on health care per capita than anyone else in the world by far, and yet we only rank 35th in life expectancy.

#3 Only one state in the entire country has an obesity rate of under 20 percent. 11 states have an obesity rate of over 30 percent.

#4 Of all the major industrialized nations, America is the most obese. Mexico is #2.

#5 Back in 1962, only 13 percent of all Americans were obese, but it is being projected that 42 percent of all Americans could be obese by the year 2030.

#6 According to a new report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 31 percent of all food in the United States gets wasted. In case you were wondering, that amounts to approximately 133 billion pounds of food a year.

#7 America has the highest incarceration rate and the largest total prison population in the entire world by a wide margin.

#8 In America, we even put 81-year-old women in prison for feeding the birds.

#9 According to a Newsweek survey taken a few years ago, 29 percent of all Americans could not even name the vice president.

#10 Americans spend more time sitting in traffic than anyone else in the world.

#11 60 percent of Americans report feeling “angry or irritable”. Two years ago that number was at 50 percent.

#12 36 percent of Americans admit that they have yelled at a customer service agent during the past year.

#13 Only 30 percent of all Americans can tell you in what year the 9/11 attacks happened.

#14 There are more “deaths by reptile” in America than anywhere else in the world.

#15 Right now, 29 percent of all Americans under the age of 35 are living with their parents.

#16 Average SAT scores have been falling for years, and the level of education that our kids are receiving in most of our public schools is a total joke.

#17 According to a study conducted by the Mayo Clinic, nearly 70 percent of all Americans are on at least one prescription drug. An astounding 20 percent of all Americans are on at least five prescription drugs.

#18 Americans spend more than 280 billion dollars on prescription drugs each year.

#19 According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, doctors in the United States write more than 250 million prescriptions for antidepressants each year.

#20 Children in the United States are three times more likely to be prescribed antidepressants than children in Europe are.

#21 In the United States today, prescription painkillers kill more Americans than heroin and cocaine combined.

#22 America has the highest rate of illegal drug use on the entire planet.

#23 According to the federal government, the number of heroin addicts in the United States has more than doubled since 2002.

#24 It is hard to believe, but 56 percent of all Americans now have “subprime credit”.

#25 America exports more weapons to other countries than anyone else in the world.

#26 The United States has the most complicated tax system on the entire planet.

#27 Corruption is rampant throughout our society. In fact, America leads the world in money given to fake charities.

#28 America leads the world in soft drink consumption by a wide margin. Today, the average American drinks more than 600 sodas a year.

#29 In 2008, 53 percent of all Americans considered themselves to be “middle class”. In 2014, only 44 percent of all Americans consider themselves to be “middle class”.

#30 70 percent of Americans do not “feel engaged or inspired at their jobs”.

#31 40 percent of all workers in the United States actually make less than what a full-time minimum wage worker made back in 1968 after you account for inflation.

#32 Back in the 1970s, about one out of every 50 Americans was on food stamps. Today, about one out of every 6 Americans is on food stamps.

#33 The marriage rate in the United States has fallen to an all-time low. Right now it is sitting at a yearly rate of 6.8 marriages per 1000 people.

#34 In the United States today, more than half of all couples “move in together” before they get married.

#35 America has the highest divorce rate in the world by a good margin.

#36 America has the highest percentage of one person households on the entire planet.

#37 100 years ago, 4.52 were living in the average U.S. household, but now the average U.S. household only consists of 2.59 people.

#38 According to the Pew Research Center, only 51 percent of all American adults are currently married. Back in 1960, 72 percent of all adults in the United States were married.

#39 For women under the age of 30 in the United States, more than half of all babies are being born out of wedlock.

#40 At this point, approximately one out of every three children in the United States lives in a home without a father.

#41 In 1970, the average woman had her first child when she was 21.4 years old. Now the average woman has her first child when she is 25.6 years old.

#42 America has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the world by a very wide margin.

#43 Approximately one out of every four teen girls in the United States has at least one sexually transmitted disease.

#44 America has the highest STD infection rate in the entire industrialized world.

#45 According to the latest figures released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, there are 20 million new sexually-transmitted infections in the United States every single year, and Americans in the 15 to 24-year-old age range account for approximately 50 percent of those new sexually-transmitted infections.

#46 As I wrote about recently, there are 747,408 registered sex offenders in the U.S. according to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

#47 America produces more pornography than any other nation in the world.

#48 America has the most lawyers per capita in the entire world.

#49 If you choose to be a “Constitutionalist” in America today, you may get labeled as a potential terrorist by the U.S. government.

#50 America has the largest national debt in the history of the world. Back in 1980, the U.S. national debt was less than one trillion dollars. Today, it is over 17 trillion dollars.

#51 According to the Congressional Budget Office, interest payments on the national debt will nearly quadruple over the next ten years.

#52 Americans spend more money on elections than anyone else does in the world by a very wide margin.

#53 65 percent of Americans are dissatisfied “with the U.S. system of government and its effectiveness”. That is the highest level of dissatisfaction that Gallup has ever recorded.

#54 Only 8 percent of Americans believe that Congress is doing a “good” or “excellent” job.

#55 70 percent of Americans do not have confidence that the federal government will “make progress on the important problems and issues facing the country in 2014.”

Also, I'd just like to say our medical hell has continued...

Hubby was finally stable with his psych meds, so we went ahead and had him put on a BP med. A couple weeks later he started to cough and by a month later he was wretching up a lung 10-15 times a DAY. We went through 3 F'N ROUNDS of anti-biotics and got sent to a specialist who said, quote "Well, you aren't my typical patient so I don't really know what to do with you."

What you don't see males? Males with Neuro disorders??? WHAT???

By the time we saw the specialist, he had been choking even in his sleep for two and a half months. When we got home from the specialist I kept thinking about the nurse when she specifically asked if he was on BP meds, and went home and looked up Lisinopril and TAH-DAH it causes chronic severe dry cough. Apparently it is SOOOO COMMON it is the first thing they teach them about Ace inhibitors, but this dumbass missed it FOUR TIMES, and even the specialist DIDN'T HAVE A FUCKING CLUE.

*I* took him off the meds and two weeks later he's almost ok, but the kicker is when we went back to the damn doc (just because we needed a refill for his thyroid med) the asshole finally figured out how incredibly negligent he had been and told US to find another doc, AND refused to fill the thyroid med!!! Now we've got two weeks to find another and get his meds.

"We have just about zero say in where all the money goes, beyond the amount we have left after paying the bills."

Wait, people have money left after paying bills???

You know, the only luxury we allow ourselves is going to eat Chinese every other Sunday....$30 and we drink water. We buy used vehicles, a fixer upper house, clothes from goodwill or walmart. All of our appliances are 7-10 years old, and I bought most of those at auctions. Our kid takes her lunch. The only luxury she gets is books for her kindle which we didn't buy, and about once a month. We haven't done anything new on the house in four years except replace both bathroom floors when we had water issues.
Haven't had a real vacation in EIGHT years and we paid for half of that with coke points hubby collected at work. We buy our meats and cheeses in bulk to save money. I cook EVERY DAY, 98% of the time from scratch. Hubby even bought our cell phones secondhand from people at work

WHERE IS THIS EXTRA MONEY YOU SPEAK OF??

Car wrecks and repairs, medical issues and house heat and a/c eat up everything that's left, and we even leave half the house unheated and cooled all year.

Our "extra money" is our CHANGE JAR that we use for emergencies.

The sad thing is, Hubby makes better than average. We paid over ten thou last year in taxes and we only get a grand back.

The system is sooo rigged that if you work harder and make more money, you get less in actual money than the people who work... whenever.

We already have socialism, but not in a way that benefits the people, just the GOVERNMENT.

I'd have to look it up in detail, but it sounds like patient abandonment, which could get you a tidy sum of malpractice money if you pursued it.
Quote:

Patient abandonment is a form of medical malpractice that occurs when a physician terminates the doctor-patient relationship without reasonable notice or a reasonable excuse, and fails to provide the patient with an opportunity to find a qualified replacement care provider.

Generally you'll find non-government statistics lag by at least 2 years because there's no group of people actively dedicated to data gathering and number crunching. You first have to get to the end of a year, it takes about a year for all the numbers to come in, and then they have to be compiled and analyzed.

A lot of statistics are pretty stable. It takes a big change for a lot of people to move most (not all) averages. For the most part the statistics will still be representative.

You ain't gonna get there from here by electing globalists like Hillary who think it is somehow their business to stick our military into everyone's business.

One of the things that makes Switzerland great is that it doesn't start wars.

It is famous for its neutrality/ isolationism, and doesn't belong to NATO or any other military alliance.

It does plan for its own defense and internal security.

Also, it has a balanced economy of manufacturing, agriculture, technology and finance.

It doesn't impose its currency as the world reserve/ petrodollar and never adopted the Euro.

It has tough immigration and residency laws.

It has a positive to neutral trade balance.

However, it's financial system is pretty dodgy.

Star Wars, if it had been a realistic system, would have destabilized the Mutual Assured Destruction paradigm on which our nuclear standoff was based.

Hey, I'm not for building more nukes, and I sure don't like Trump's views on Israel and Iran. I was merely pointing out that "spending more money on the military" does not necessarily mean "war".

Trump's foreign policy is, in a word, incoherent. If he's really serious about making nice with Russia his views on China and Iran will have to bend. He could get bitch-slapped by reality pretty soon.

And IMHO "incoherent" is better than "pathologically aggressive".

But, bigger picture - totally leaked by Trump. My only question is why and why now? Is he using that to deflect from Russia? Or Bannon's chaos theory?

Maybe 2005 was the only year when Trump had both high income and paid taxes. If so, Trump releasing just one page from just that year could be an outrageous but savvy PR move—the kind of thing that Trump is very good at.

The AMT — short for alternative minimum tax — is a provision of the tax code that’s designed to somewhat limit wealthy individuals’ ability to exploit loopholes to minimize their tax burdens. Had it not existed back in 2005, Trump would have paid closer to $5 million than $38 million in taxes that year — an effective rate of less than 3.5 percent.

Trump wants the AMT repealed, by the way. Why not give himself and his children a special tax gift every year for the rest of their lives by repealing AMT because the whole family worked so very hard getting daddy Trump elected?

Trump is abolishing AMT? Almost enough to make it worth voting for him. Not quite, but def. a step in the right direction. I'm sure Maddow disagrees. Except when she's filing taxes.

AMT doesn't hit people with real money that have large stock portfolios.

AMT, like the minimum wage, did not increase with inflation.

AMT was designed to slowly be another large tax on the middle class that file 1040s as inflation rose.

I have to confess I had this thought and then didn't post it because why walk into that bear trap. But now that you have, I'll second it.

Very well said. This is the problem exactly. As inflation increases out of control, wages evaporate, and the nominal income has to eventually go up, and slide into the max tax bracket. That max bracket is around 100k, crawling towards 125. Wages of course have not kept pace with inflation.

Like most people, I make the same i always did, as do most people. So, in order to kick myself out of $20/hr and move into $50/hr i'd have to take a job with a much more stringent set of requirements. This would mean perhaps more school, a student load, possibly relocating and a mortgage, and definitely a commitment of at least 70-80 hours of work, of which only 40 would be actually clocked. This would put me in a position to pay max tax, including AMT, at around 7%, and FICA c. 15% and then pay 12% or so to obamacare, which is a tax, and anything I had with my job which was required, union dues, or 401k, which would be almost a given, 4% to some company that would then pocket it, before worrying about state and federal income tax, at 10% and 39% respectively. So before deductions, my nominal tax rate would be 87%. Sure, I could get some of that back, but I'd also lose a lot more to the costs related to the situation.

Sorry, my sarcasm detector was off.
Did the pro war contingent really suggest a world war, or was that a joke?
I'm assuming it is, but maybe you should look to the overall pattern of thought here to understand why it was a stopper. Nothing personal G, just the overall slide of left leaning arguments here and everywhere are decidedly sliding in the direction Sig is indicating.

Meanwhile, Free Tibet with every purchase.

Wow... those must be the stupidest city officials ever. The residents didn't have Patrick Swazye from Roadhouse to step in and fight for them, but the city forgot that in 2017 the internet is a thing. I'm willing to bet they'd all be out on their asses and nobody would have ever heard about this 30 years ago. If they had tried to fight it they would have probably got a corrupt lawyer in the pockets of the developer who was working with the judge against the town.... that or the lawyer would have just had an "accident".

It sounds like they just got un-fucked now though.

If I were them, I'd take this further and sue the shit out of the city and the developer. Maybe at the end of all of this the residents of Pleasant Ridge will have their homes paid for in full.

Your list Wish is very factual. I do remember a different America growing up, although I caught some of that "snarky" sentiment about the "greatness" as a child, but I still believed I was 100% red-blooded American made, through and through.

My president was JFK. I watched as my teacher openly cried at the news of his demise. We were taught that the president was the "father" of the country. So, as a kid being raised by a brave single mother, that was quite a blow. I knew my biological father, but this was different. I deeply felt the sorrow of the nation at the time, we lost our leader. Looking back it seems like a whole different planet, a dream I had, smoke, vapor....a whole different vibe.

When I say that your list is factual, it's not a slight in any way. It's just that I remember an America that would take this situation we're in now
(hell, the real America would have sent this clown packing. Imagine waking up one fine morning and finding Hitler in charge of the country. What would all those WWII vets say to this charlatan) and roll up "our" sleeves and go to work. I miss THAT America. The spirit of the country was totally different than the one we have now. We've been beaten into submission.

Sure, we're fat, depressed, overmedicated, divorced, stupid, dumb, numb and greedy...but that's nothing compared to banding together to oust a tyrant. We did it some 200-some odd years ago, and then again in the 40s, and in worse conditions. I say, fuck that, we need to remember how we got here. I still feel we have the wherewithall to "roll up our sleeves" and get to work.

How embarrasing that we have a racist, incoherent, uneducated, piece of shit, sleeze of a slob "leading" the country. We're better than this, and I don't mean the arrogant, snobby, ugly American.....I'm talking about the real
people of this beautiful country. The ones that when they see you down, don't step on you as they walk by. They extend a hand.
