This is nothing new.

When we were a part of things like this you were still supporting climate change by buying products made in countries that were not a part of it. Look in your closet and tell me how many things you have that were made in China or another country reaping the benefits of not following accords.

The only countries that didn't sign up to the Paris accords were Syria and Nicaragua. The USA is poised to join that select group of non-cooperating nations.

As for China:

What a stupid rebuttal. Your suggestion to deal with climate change by not buying product from polluter's, would mean no one would buy product from us. It's completely void of common sense and shows you are clueless as to how things work. And who the worst poluters are. It is not a valid approach to dealing with climate change Jack, which is a completely different issue than trade.

This is a perfect example of how Trump voters think. It runs afoul of decisions made using educated and researched fact based evidence.

This is about leadership in a global community. America should always be the beacon that shows the rest of the world the way into the future. The success of Democracy is tied directly to that concept.

It is also about research and jobs. America should be the leaders in going green, not china. It's the new job market going forward. When you say state you reveal your local approach to this. We need a national effort that's leading the way in a global market.

Election outcomes turn out to be largely random events. A democracy virtually guarantees that at some point you’ll end up with a grossly unfit leader.

If you look at shares of the two-party vote in the 20th century, the presidential candidate who got the biggest two-party share was Warren Harding, now widely regarded as the worst president in American history. But people thought he was charming. And they all made the same mistake at the same time.

I agree. OTOH, if Trump simply reneges on the whole thing, that would really upset the apple cart! In any case, I expect that some states will simply forge ahead on their planned path to sustainable energy, and then it will be demonstrated whether sustainable energy and all of the green, high-tech jobs that go with it, are economically sustainable as well.

Why do people buy stuff from China, T?

It's certainly not because of the high quality of the product, and it definitely isn't because of the fear that nobody would buy stuff from the US if we didn't. Your argument is asinine.

We buy stuff from China because it's cheap, and in a time where the American Dollar is in the tank that has become a necessity.

Why is it cheap? Well other than the obvious that it's not very well made or built to last, I see two main reasons. One is that they had zero worry about the environment and zero government oversight on the pollution. The second is that they could, at least for a time, pay their workers pennies on the dollar to what we would get paid here.

Let me ask you this. What do you think is going to happen to the price of goods by 2020 when China has joined these Paris accords? Is the price going to go up or down? Will most people even be able to afford clothing their kids with clothes made in China? Will a lot of stuff people buy start having tags that say "made in Syria" and "Made in Nicaragua?"

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

"Made in Vietnam". Vietnam is China's China to date. I don't know what country is Vietnam's Vietnam.

People don't seem to understand the basic conundrum of capitalism - if workers don't get paid the full value of what they make, they can't afford to buy those things. They have to get something cheaper. And THOSE workers who make those cheaper goods have to buy something even cheaper than that. And so on till you get to people who can't even afford food, water, and shelter. Meanwhile, that money people aren't getting paid is being hoarded by a few people who own the factories.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

So I went looking. Under what authority did the US sign onto the treaty? Under what authority can Trump pull the US out? And, what did we agree to, anyway?

http://www.snopes.com/2017/06/01/authority-paris-agreement/

... the individual countries’ plans are voluntary, but the legal requirements that they publicly monitor, verify and report what they are doing, as well as publicly put forth updated plans, are designed to create a “name-and-shame” system of global peer pressure ...

The authority for the legally binding aspects of the agreement actually comes from a treaty that the United States Senate ratified in the 1990s: The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), as explained by the Center for Climate and Energy Solution ... a “small team” is working out the details of how exactly to initiate leaving the deal and whether they plan on leaving only the Paris Agreement or the entire UNFCCC treaty ...

... (the latter) could theoretically bring the United States out of the Agreement (and the entire United Nations Climate Program in general) in only a year’s time, but where the ultimate authority to pull out of that treaty lies is a legally complicated issue. An increasingly relevant October 2016 note from the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (titled “Could a Future President Reverse U.S. Approval of the Paris Agreement?”) touches on this issue:

There is some question whether the president may withdraw from the UNFCCC without Senate approval as a matter of U.S. constitutional law. Unlike the Paris Agreement, which President Obama accepted under his executive authority, the UNFCCC was ratified by President George H.W. Bush after receiving the Senate’s consent […].

Consequently, there is a plausible argument that the president may not withdraw from the UNFCCC without the Senate’s consent, for the same reason that the president may not unilaterally rescind a law enacted by Congress ...

Actually California is 6th in the world's largest economy.

Still though, fuck Trump, Gov. Brown and company will push on without his stupid ass. And may the countries with the best vision towards the future give Trump the middle finger, as the World Wide Community laughs all the way to the bank and enjoys a cleaner, more sustained planet.

As a post script, I'm with the revolutionary vision of George Carlin, who said many years ago that the Earth will shrug it's shoulders as it keeps on spinning. Of course, at the rate we are going, we won't be around. But that's what all the indicators show. That WaterWorld movie will become a reality.

Yep!

But you have to realize by "fixing the economy" I don't mean adding more fiat dollars to meaningless GDP numbers. I mean re-industrializing the USA so that we produce as many essential goods as we have resources for, distributing production and goods so that each entity can sustain itself over the short term to cover disasters (for example, cities should be able to survive for two weeks on the basis of stored goods. This would cover natural disasters like Katrina, or a mega-quake in LA), balance our trade deficit, have enough jobs so that everyone who wants to work can earn a decent living, put the USA onto an environmentally- sustainable path, and reduce the wealth gap that's making a mockery of democracy. That's a tall order, but that's what's necessary if we really want to fix our economy!

I doubt Trump will even be able to re-industrialize a small fraction of our economy.

(BTW- I also propose eliminating fractional reserve banking, creating a REAL government central bank, and eliminating corporations as people. That's more "financial" than "economic", tho.)

- KIKI

Once again 1kiki reminds us of why she believes socialism or communism is best.
It's not going to happen here comrade. - THUGR

Once again, we see THUGR in full-blown denial of reality.

In the real world, THUGR, as opposed to the world in your head, this "hoarding" of money as KIKI described is a real economic problem. Once money becomes stops circulating, it's like blood that isn't circulating- it does no good, and the part of the economy where money isn't circulating dies. When that happens, if enough people get miserable enough, revolution ensues. So in reality, ultimately, the money-hoarders kill the goose that's laying golden eggs, to mix metaphors.

Keynes, and FDR and his economists introduced government subsidies and government debt to SAVE capitalism from itself, not to kill it. It's quite a conundrum: Preventing repeated busts caused by money-hoarding is one that has occupied economists since the early 1800s. But if you can think of a better way to keep capitalism from killing itself by ultimately causing repeated financial and economic collapse, have at it. You'll win the Nobel Prize if you do.

You know... In real life I can't find a single person who likes Waterworld.

I find out that 3 people on this board so far agree with me that it was a great flick.

I said the score/soundtrack was great... but... I did like the movie. The thing is at one point in my life I decided to not be such an impossible person to please when it came to scifi/fantasy films. Too many jerks said their life was ruined by X director or Y movie when they had absolutely no understanding of what it takes to make even a bad movie. It doesn't mean I give mediocre things a pass or even say I like them. It just means I don't get as angry about it any more. Life is much better! Apart from the music, the Idea of Water World will always be the best part of the movie for me. And that boat of course!

==============================

I think most people that don't like the flick only don't like it because it's been shit on for so many years by critics. I was 15 when I saw it, so my brother would have only been 13. I know he liked it when it came out. What 13 year old boy wouldn't have liked it?

He laughs at me now when I talk about how good it was and says he can't stand it. I could see not thinking it was amazing, but how could anybody hate it?

I'm not saying it was anything seriously deep, but it was great for what it was supposed to be. Just a big budget summer blockbuster, which at the time was the most expensive movie ever made. It was the pirate movie of my teenage years before the Pirates movies came out. It was Michael Bay before Michael Bay was a thing. It was like paying a few bucks to see a water show at Disney for poor people who couldn't actually ever afford to go to Disney.

Mr. Class, as always. Probably the first ex-Prez that ever badmouthed the current leadership in American History.

How about you just disappear now Barry?

I never had to listen to a word that GWB said after he was out. Your time is over. Go cry with Kathy Griffin.

Oh, OK.
That is quite a bit beyond economy.

Waterworld mostly got a bad rap due to overbudget because of weather delays in shooting. Costner wanted to film on the ocean, with that floating trading post, instead of in a studio or soundstage. He needed blue skies and sun. But the ocean around Hawaii was rainy and cloudy most of the time. Massive cost overruns.

You're talking to yourself right now JSF. I think they're all having a good cry with Rachel Maddow today.

I'm sure this particular thread is going to come back in full force for them now that the Russian narrative went nowhere though.
