This has got to be the best explanation of what we're doing wrong, by Peter Schiff. Schiff, btw, predicted the 2008 melt-down, and people laughed at him.

Cassandra effect, someone preditcs a dire warning, a big crash, it happens...next people start to ignore this person wanting to believe in a new economic miracle, they gets tired of the doom and gloom and want to hear something nice, something about hitting the jackpot, Doomsterism looms. An economic crash does hang over, yes there are Debt ceiling to be broke but most Presidents will just try to quick fix, patch up the sinking boat, kick the can down the road and set the baot sail for another four years. A seer, a woman who had visions of the future, the 'predicament', or 'curse') occurs when valid warnings or concern to the peoples are dismissed or disbelieved
Lack of materials, scarcity, crime, unemployment, overpopulation, tribalism, conflicts, war and disease, Muslim-Hindu and other ethnic and religious strife over falling water tables probably unavoidable a huge mess looms in Africa and probably another credit crisis across Europe, N.America, South America. The world's economic center of gravity has shifted massively. The Center of Economic Gravity was once over Europe heading in the direction of New York, it shifted massively and is now moving into Russia, Kazakhstan and into China? The US, Britain and France heavily invested with backstabbing jihadist Arabs of the Middle East while Life is changing in every Urban area across the planet. The Urban Rat, the City Rat race , the Cities, the Metropolis and MegaCity are now the main human habitat on the planet and these cities are swelling to super mega cities and urban sprawls with populations that surpass most states. The rat races build the Cities will thus dominate the global social and political scene they will also domiante in terms of sheer numbers and people in a neo concrete jungle with no connection to nature will get to decide and vote and the waters, the corp growers, animals, the farm workers and natural resources of the planet. The economic center shifted

People ignore Doomsayers, like the Cassandra Effect in the myth and history anceint Greek.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

I briefly looked for a date for the video, or a date for the prediction, and didn't find any.

I think you'll have to do better than ...

... it's all good so far!

So anyway ... anyone up for a rational, fact-based, and civil discussion about the topic?

I'm not sure if you are implying the prediction was around July 2017 with Dow around 21,500-21,800 or the prediction was around 2012 with Dow around 12,000. Regardless of when in that span, his Nostradamus act appears worthless.

He makes a common mistake in the video.

"Why did peepl vote for Trump if everything iz so good? Why did they vote for chanje? They shoud hav voted for Hillary for more uv the same."

I keep hearing the 'why did voterz chooze Trump' argument in various formz.

It iz false. Peepl DID vote for Hillary! She got 3 million more votes than Trump - a comfortable marjin, exept for the $#@& stoopid electoral collej system.

Over 60 million people were going to be super pissed either way J0. This country is more divided than it ever has been. I still know people who won't talk to each other after how they argued on Facebook during the election season.

Besides... you guys had 8 years to do something about the Electoral College when your Savior was in office. The problem is that you never hear Democrats bitching about it when a Democrat wins.

I suspect that is because Democrats in power know that they truly don't want to get rid of it either. They've got most of the states with the largest numbers on lock down and they usually don't have to bother with any campaigning in them. "Got one of the largest Urban centers in the US and plenty of Unions in Illinois? Well even though a map shows the rest of the state as strongly Republican, it's going to be points for the Democrats every time. No point campaigning there."

If the Democrats in power actually thought of the Electoral College as a problem it would have been dealt with at some point in history by now.

No. They're perfectly fine with the way that things are right now. They also benefit from the fact that when things don't go their way they've got something to whine and bitch about too.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

OK, the video was apparently made after Trump was elected, so this Nostradomus was talking about this horrible economy since then.

True. Only the Demz get all the idiot points kuz they got burned twise in the last 5 electionz.

But not only that. The Democratic Party wuz actually formed az a rezult uv the 1st electoral collej victory over the popular vote! From Wiki:

"Soon after his inauguration as President, Adams appointed Henry Clay as his secretary of state. This result became a source of great bitterness for Jackson and his supporters, who proclaimed the election of Adams a "corrupt bargain," and were inspired to create the Democratic Party."

The next loss wuz wen the Demz were the bad guyz after the sivil war.

So all 4 timez it worked for the GoPs.

So what do you think the reason for this is J0?

It's happened twice now since I've been old enough to vote. There's plenty of bitching about how unfair it is when it happens, but when it doesn't happen and there's a Dem in the President's seat, nobody even talks about it anymore. The first two years under Obama he had the house and senate backing him.

Not true, either of you.
Because we are a Republic, if we didn't use Electoral College we would just go by which party won the majority of States. Only one time in Election history has GOP failed to win the majority of States. 2012. So the Democraps have always benefitted from the Electoral System, since 1860.

We're going to need a citation showing that we'd just go by a majority of states.

J0 and I are obviously going under the assumption that if there were no Electoral College than it would be a popular vote. This is the first time that I've ever heard it the way you're describing it.

I'm assuming you learned this wherever you learned your 1% figure that you've still failed to provide any citations for?

JSF, the figure that you quote are so phonied up as to be meaningless. There are other figures, such as the "participation rate" and the "velocity of money" which tell a story that is not only NOT AS ROSY as the ones that you paint, they actually portray a dire situation.

The reality is that while some official figures look good, the wealth gap and debt burden are at an all-time high. That's not Trump's fault; it was all set in motion by The Fed, and while I support Trump's goal "Make American Great Again" he hasn't had the power - or the time- to turn the Titanic around. Your celebration is very very premature.

Well, yes, this is a wrong assumption. The only way to get the original colonies to stick together when they were going in all different directions economically and politically was by assuring them that nothing would happen unless there was a near-universal consensus, strictly limiting the power of the Federal government, and by putting the power of the vote onto the hands of the states both in the Senate AND during the election of nationwide office. The Electoral College isn't a state-by-ate vote, it's something of a bastardization of the process, because the delegates aren't "bound" to their candidate.

This year or next. I know that's kind of broad-brush, but all of the ingredients for disaster are in place, it's just impossible to predict what the trigger will be or when it will occur.

BTW, I've been constructing a post regarding Participation Rate in the Unemployment Rate Facts thread. In the next week it should be completed, to help illustrate your point (and a point 6ix brought up).

I looked it up on Urban Dictionary. I'm assuming your definition is more in line with these.

"Snowflake Millennial"

Really soft millennials who take offense to everything you say even if it doesn't apply to them. They feel the world owes them something because they always been handed everything, including participation trophies their whole lives.

"Snowflake"

A term used to describe extremist liberals that get offended by every statement and/or belief that doesn't exactly match their own. These individuals think they are just as "unique" as snowflakes, when really their feelings are just as fragile.

6ix might be confusing the United STATES of America with ancient Greeks, who didn't even know this continent existed.

I forgot to post mention of this:
Ancient Sparta had elements of Democracy, electing members of Council and Senate. It had a population of 8,000 adult males ruling over a population of 100,000 slaves and semi-slaves.

Ancient Athens, "the birthplace of Democracy" where all male Citizens could participate in open Assembly, creating Law and Policy. It had a population of about 140,000. 40,000 were male Citizens, and another 40,000 were slaves.

Compared to the Republic of The United States, where each individual US House member is Representative for, on average, over 800,000 Citizens.
Each Senator represents a State, ranging in population from 586,000 to about 40 million presumed Citizens.
The President represents over 330 million population.
