From the graffiti on the ceiling, I'd say it was well known by the local teens.

Yay, caves.

America loves a winner!

1st I heard about this. Seems Europe is riddled w/ caves going back 1000's of years. Dug out caves, not just natural formations. Some have speculated that , 10,000 years ago or so, something drove humans to head underground, at least for a time. IDK if I buy that entirely, but there is some evidence that humans did suffer through an extinction event, and much of our prior history was lost.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

There was no graffiti.

Trump is not the problem. He set himself against the Deep State's agenda. And the Deep State's been heading for WWIII for years.
As for you, you're just a Deep State useful idiot, furthering its agenda. So I hope you enjoy cesium in your coffee. You've earned it.

Both articles specifically mentioned more than once that the caves were untouched. There seems to be conflicting information.

"However, the tunnel actually unearths untouched caves which were used by followers of the Knights Templars – a medieval religious order that fought in the Crusades."
"The untouched caves, in Shropshire, date back 700 years (Picture: Michael Scott/ Caters News)"
"The tunnel leads to a network of walkways which are ‘completely untouched’, and filled with beautifully carved arches."

The untouched caverns date back to a time when the Knights were prominent before King Philip IV of France, fearful of their power and deeply in their debt, attempted to dismantle the renowned group.
The Caynton Caves lay untouched for years and it is still not known exactly when they were carved. Some believe it was by their knights 700 years ago while some think it was by their followers in the 17th century.

Caynton Caves

The Caynton Caves are a series of man-made underground chambers in the grounds of Caynton Hall, near Beckbury, Shropshire, England. Their original purpose and date of construction are disputed, though most authoritative sources date them to the 19th century.
Description and history

The caverns comprise an irregular series of neo-Romanesque ambulatories and chambers hollowed out of sandstone, with carved archways, pillars, symbols and niches, apparently for candles. They are located about 250 metres (820 ft) west of Caynton Hall, beneath privately-owned woodland, within a disused stone quarry. One suggestion is that they were the result of quarrying during the mid-19th century and were then turned by the landowners, the Legge family, into a grotto or underground folly.[1][2][3]

There have been speculative claims that the caverns are older, perhaps dating back at least to the 17th century, and some press articles have associated them with the Knights Templar.[4][5] However, historian and author Dan Jones considers that there is no evidence linking the caves to the Templars [6] and Historic England dates the grotto as probably late 18th-century or early 19th-century.[7]

The site is on private land and not open to the public.[2] However, since at least the 1980s, the caverns have sometimes been used for informal secret ceremonies and rituals. They have been vandalised and were closed off in 2012 as a result.[1][4] Later unblocked, they were accessed by a photographer and received widespread publicity in March 2017.[5][8]

Being a cynic, this is what I make of the story.

The caves aren't exactly news. Nor are they likely to be as described. What brought this up was that a photographer recently accessed them to take a bunch of pictures.

As for the linked stories: First you you inflate the Knights Templar speculation and omit the information they're at most 250 years old; you leave out the parts about them being associated with an abandoned quarry and imply they're in the middle of a nondescript field; and you leave out that they were discovered years ago, and were both used and altered since they were discovered (except for the awkward sentence fragment that accidentally got left in).

And voilà. A mindless piece of fluff separately covered in two different papers, that also illustrates quite nicely how the media purposefully shades the facts to give you the story that sells. Because the wiki entry full of facts is not nearly as entrancing. (Distorting the facts wouldn't be so bad if they stopped at trivial fluff, unfortunately, the media does that to important news as well.)

The real story would have gone something like this: a photographer recently took pictures of some small caves and tunnels that were dug 150-250 years ago. These caves are associated with a defunct quarry. Since their discovery around the 1980's, the caves have been damaged by trespassers onto the property, which led to them being closed in 2012.

Wishi - your cynicism was appropriate, but too narrow.

One item I read was how they were only one meter below an active agriculture field. That didn't compute for me - one yard of dirt for the cave ceiling? How could a tractor not fall in?

Slight shift in topic:

Was listening to David Brody on Coast2Coast, talking about the Knights Templar of North America.

I had not known of the Knight buried near Boston, Merrimac River? Dated from 1200. After they had spent time with the Native Tribes in Nova Scotia. The Westford Knight.

Nor about the ancient Phoenicians coming to the Great Lakes to mine Copper from Superior and Michigan, around 500BC. Ships had already been found with loads of copper, although Europe had very little copper. The purity of the copper defined it as sourced from the Great Lakes.
So this supply of copper was required before The Bronze Age could commence.

That seemed interesting.
