By democrats 'forgetting' to represent the working class - as I indicated in my Matt Taibbi post. By democrats stopping being a real economic alternative for Americans, while republicans became a real social-issues one.

That's how.

And if democrats don't do any different, how are they any better?

Bingo.

Democrats stopped being for the working class years ago. You've got two parties that are for the elites, with Democrats also being for global interests on top of it.

Meanwhile, the Democrats have decided to take up every possible social issue they thought would get them votes, not stopping once to consider the facts that they alienated their original core base (the working class), and most of the interests they've taken up do not and can not co-exist with each other.

Because none of these ideas can co-exist, nobody can say anything about anything anymore without fear of having their lives ruined. Democrats are now the "Religious Right" of the 21st Century.

Republicans have been hammering on what were then called "cultural wedge issues" since I was in college DECADES ago.

What wasn't really evident until the Obama honeymoon was over was how deeply democrats had abandoned the working class. (Which I was harping on back before 2016.)

But what pushed Trump over a full slate of republican candidate hopefuls and past Hillary was that he was willing to address things both democrats AND republicans were too beholden to mention:

Manufacturing. Low-wage illegal immigrants. China. NAFTA~CAFTA~SHAFTA. NATO. big Pharma. Military contracting.

Trump won the political culture war AND the political economic one AND the political policy one.

And if democrats don't do any different, how are they any better?

It's no wonder the warmongering Bushite NeoCons are just as against Trump as the Democrats, the Legacy Media, Big Tech and the Multi-National corps are.

Here is a cultural divide for you: While 81 percent of Democrats said they’d get vaccinated if a free, FDA-approved Covid-19 vaccine were available, only 47 percent of Republicans said the same. Independents are in the middle with 59 percent saying they would accept the vaccine.

You can find the same divide with displaying Confederate flags, statues to General Lee, BLM, abortion, evolution, climate change, etc.

But we have a very long list of human experiments that show that without capital to go alongside of labor ends in slavery, a complete lack of liberty, countless deaths and revolution.

Hey. For once Ted posts something I'm not in disagreement with.

Let's force all of the governors of each state that have passed unconstitutional mandates in the last 4 months to repeal them immediately and put in safeguards that won't allow them to ever do that again, then we'll do the same to Trump.

Executive orders were always a problem, but fucking GWB gave them a super dose of steroids and Obama gave them booster shots while keeping the seat warm for Trump.

Those "Independent" voters are not electing "Independent" politicians. There are 5 (or 3 depending on how you count) "Independent" politicians in Congress. I'm thinking that most Independents are really either voting for a Democrat, a Republican, or they vote in vain for candidates that never win.

What your data shows is that some Republicans have decided to call themselves "Independents", but I suspect the newest "Independents" keep voting for Republicans. It's the same old people giving themselves a new label, maybe because Mal was an "Independent" on Firefly. But back on Earth, nothing changed and America has been, is, and will be in gridlock until those "Independents" give one party or the other 67 Senators to break the stalemate temporarily. On the next election, or the one after that, America will return to gridlock once neither party has 67 Senators.

The rational self-interest theory of politics meets Donald Trump

In a rational world, Trump and Senate Republicans would have agreed to a reasonably generous economic relief package along the lines of the HEROES Act approved by the House. Without an extension of the special pandemic unemployment benefits and aid to state and local governments, a humanitarian disaster is inevitable and a macroeconomic disaster a real possibility. Trump’s executive orders are inadequate to prevent mass homelessness and hunger. This will quickly become evident. Layoffs of government workers will mount. How do Trump and Republican members of Congress think they can avoid electoral accountability for the coming train wreck? How will Trump explain breaking off talks and rejecting a much more generous aid package, when it will be obvious that a bigger package was needed? What will Republican Senators say to their constituents? Remember, the party of the president gets the blame for bad outcomes, deserved or not.

Perhaps Senate leader Mitch McConnell feels his position as party leader will be threatened if he tries to move a bill without majority support within his caucus. A few days ago I expressed cautious optimism that Republicans would not try to hobble a Biden presidency by destroying the economy in the run up to the general election. But maybe I was wrong. Or maybe Trump and McConnell are betting that their indifference to suffering will let them get a relief bill without measures to protect the November vote, or with more corporate goodies, or with less overall spending. Whatever is going on, Republicans are playing a dangerous game.

Uh ... you DO know that nobody here is blind and we can all see the same graph - right? And that no matter how much you blatantly lie about what we all can see, it doesn't actually change what we all can see - right?

So, let me just state the obvious.

Between Kennedy and Obama, republican party affiliation wandered between 21-32%, hitting a low at Ford and Carter, and a high at Reagan through Bush the Deux, but staying within a narrow range of 25 +/-5.

But democrats dropped from a high at Kennedy of 51 to a low at Reagan of 34, then dropping further to 31 during Bush the Elder, from which they never recovered by 2014.

It was either her or Susan Rice, but Susan Rice might get tangled up in Russiagate, seeing as she was at that meeting with Obama, Biden, Comey and others talking about how to "get" Trump (as far as anyone can tell).

Blacks are racist. They'll vote for a black person, no matter how much that person might be against their interests. Remember Clarence Thomas? Not that blacks could vote for Justice Thomas, but in the opinion polls at the time they supported his confirmation despite the fact that he was against affirmative action and that he was a sexual harasser.

One thing I heard discussed was that with mail-in voting, many people will be able to vote before the debates, making Biden's debate performance irrelevant.

So what does your post have to do with the fact that DEMOCRATS have lost 40% of their support in counties, states, and Congress over the decades?

Your reference says that "Currently, 39% Americans identify as independents, 32% as Democrats and 23% as Republicans." When the day comes that 39% of Congress are members of neither the Democratic Party nor the GOP, then your argument will have some weight. But so long as those "Independents" voters aren't electing "Independent" politicians, those "Independents" might just as well not vote. Or maybe those "Independent" voters are really dizzy, dithering nincompoops who actually vote for Democrats and Republicans.

Kamala Harris, while totally the expected choice, is the worst choice Biden could have made.

He's a racist dude, and because he has no filter he says racist things on accident all the time. He's an establishment Democrat, which is not going to play well at all with the 30 and younger Democrat crowd. He's been a tough-on-crime politician for decades, personally responsible for the imprisonment of tens of thousands of black men for non-violent drug possession charges.

Kamala Harris does nothing to counter-balance any one of those things. In fact, aside from the fact she's female and black, she offers nothing to the 30 and under Democrat crowd that would much rather be voting for Biden if Sanders were on the ticket. And Donald Trump has release a lot of the non-violent offender black men that Kamala Harris has put behind bars during her tough-on-crime past.

Kamala Harris as Biden's pick is just another nail in the Biden candidacy coffin.

Nah...

A majority of the people who are too lazy (or don't care enough) to go to the booth to vote are going to be too lazy (or not care enough) to ever get around to filling one of them out.

Of those that do, nobody is going to be doing it the day, week or month they get it mailed to them, and it will sit under a pile of junk mail. The debates might be one of the things that remind them that they even got it.

The only people who are going to be rushing to mail out their ballots early are people who are already 1000% in support of Not-Trump. They weren't going to be swayed to vote the other way no matter how bad the debates go for Biden or even be so demoralized that they wouldn't have done so.

I don't imagine the mail in ballot is going to have the effect the Democrats are hoping it will. All it's going to do is add to the confusion and we might not know for a long time who actually won unless Trump wins by a landslide like I predicted long ago and still predict today.

Or maybe that 20% of ex-democrats are not voting for democrats - which is a problem for democrats, and why they lost state legislatures and governorships, as well as the US Senate and the House (only recently retaken).

Do Right, Be Right. :)

The last debates I watched were Nixon vs JFK, but I'll be cheering for Trump because I've got a lot of money depending on Trump winning. On the other hand, I'm not gonna vote for him because he is a fat dumb motherfucker who poor white trash find appealing.

LOL

Dude. For the thousandth time, we already know that this version of yourself that you portray online is a rich guy who isn't voting for Trump but is going to be so happy about all of that extra money that they're going to get and have no plans on doing anything that they virtue signal about with.

Not even giving some of that money to Haken for keeping the lights on and giving you a site to post your bullshit everyday.

Why do you keep posting this? Do you think that everybody here hasn't read it yet?

In Texas I know hundreds of Democrats who became Republicans. That is fine with me because the GOP will never pass an income tax to tap into my wealth. Since those same Democrats who turned to the GOP won’t pay for what they want from Texas government, they can’t have it, which is fine with me and my money, but poor little dimwits don’t understand why they can’t have what they want from government. To that I can only shrug. Too bad for them and their tragic inability to understand why.

And while you call everyone else stupid, you can't see what the most dimwitted have figured out - democrats are NOT an alternative to republicans.

And if democrats don't do any different, how are they any better?

I assume you are proposing a 3rd party alternative to Democrats and Republicans. Good luck with that idea. Maybe wiki can help you know why it fails in the USA, but not in other countries.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-party_system

Explanations for why a political system with free elections may evolve into a two-party system have been debated. A leading theory, referred to as Duverger's law, states that two parties are a natural result of a winner-take-all voting system.

Even the primary elections, where the politicians who will be Democratic candidates are selected, is a winner-take-all voting system, which would explain why the Democratic Party is the way it is. Minority opinions can't even be expressed within the Party because the people who have those opinions are filtered out and thrown away during the primary elections. Perhaps this is why Democrats are split into two parties, the left wing and the right wing Democrats, mirroring the national split between the GOP and the Democrats. The winner-take-all voting system in both primary and general elections doesn't allow third parties, with original ideas and better intentions, to take control of government.

Sometimes a Republican President can have a great idea that even a Democrat didn't think of:

President @realDonaldTrump: If I am victorious on November 3rd I plan to make permanent cuts to the payroll tax
3:46 PM · Aug 8, 2020·Twitter Media Studio
Video here, where Trump says Biden won't.
https://twitter.com/TeamTrump/status/1292200472837795843

He wrote an Executive Order to delay until 2021 the collecting of the payroll tax. But, as Trump said, we should terminate the payroll tax. It’s regressive. We should get rid of it and simply fund Social Security out of general tax revenues, just like everything else. Why should it have a less reliable funding source than the Pentagon, after all?
www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/memorandum-deferring-payroll-t
ax-obligations-light-ongoing-covid-19-disaster
/

So that’s that. Get rid of the payroll tax and increase the personal and corporate income taxes to make up the revenue. At the same time, we can make a bonfire out of the bonds in the Social Security trust fund, televised on national TV for everyone to see. There would be no more ridiculous talk about Social Security “going bankrupt” or endless arguments about whether the trust fund is “real” or “fully funded over the 75-year window.” When it’s all over, we’d pay for Social Security (and Medicare) the same way everything else is paid for: through general purpose taxes. This would save Social Security and Medicare and ensure their full funding forever.

What are the bonds in the Social Security trust funds?
www.ssa.gov/news/press/factsheets/WhatAreTheTrust.htm
The Social Security trust funds hold money not needed in the current year to pay benefits and administrative costs and, by law, invest it in special Treasury bonds that are guaranteed by the U.S. Government. A market rate of interest is paid to the trust funds on the bonds they hold, and when those bonds reach maturity or are needed to pay benefits, the Treasury redeems them.

Noam Chomsky wants you to vote for Joe Biden and then haunt his dreams

I'm not much interested in his personality. I don't have any opinion. I'm interested in how things get done. And the way things get done is not by Biden having a religious conversion and saying, "Oh, we've got to really work on the climate." That's not what happened. The DNC probably hates the program, but they have no choice, because their popular base is not only demanding it, but is working constantly, hard, to force them to do it. That's politics. Not the personality of leaders. I don't know what's in his mind. I don't care, frankly.

The pandemic is providing an opportunity for choices about what kind of world will emerge from it. Very different choices. Those who essentially created the crisis and have given us 40 years of the neoliberal assault on the global population are working very hard, relentlessly, to ensure that what emerges will be a harsher version of what created this system. Other forces, ranging from what you see in the streets in the United States to the environmental movement to DiEM25 in Europe. Many other popular forces are trying to move towards a very different world.

Question: You have advocated for so long for a brutal honesty about the United States, about empire, about how capitalism works. I wonder, how do you think about having an honest view about your country and still finding love for your country?

Noam Chomsky: Depends which America you're talking about.

Are you talking about John Calhoun? Talking about the people who instigated the most vicious system of slavery in human history? Is that the United States? Or are you talking about the abolitionists?

Are you talking about Abraham Lincoln's Republican Party, which regarded wage labor as different from slavery only in that it was temporary, because being dependent on another person is an intolerable attack on human rights and dignity? That's one America. The other America is the robber barons, the slave owners, the people who destroyed Tulsa when a Black community was successful.

In the 1980s, there were the Reaganites who wanted to devastate and destroy and murder and slaughter in central America, who supported Apartheid until the last second. That's one America. There's another America of the people who dedicated themselves to go help and support the victims of our atrocities.

There's the SNCC workers, and there's Bull Connor.

There's two different Americas. So which one do you want?

The Country That Was Built to Fall Apart

Why secession, separatism, and disunion are the most American of values.

“We must dissolve all connexion with those murderers of fathers, and murderers of mothers, and murderers of liberty,” wrote William Lloyd Garrison in 1842. “Are not their principles, their pursuits, their policies, their interests, their designs, feelings, utterly diverse from ours? Why, then, be subject to their dominion?” Garrison was an abolitionist, but this, Richard Kreitner argues, was a sentiment that Americans with all types of political commitments have voiced over the years. Kreitner’s new book, Break It Up: Secession, Division, and the Secret History of America’s Imperfect Union, is an extremely readable, ambitiously wide-ranging history of all the times Americans have seriously contemplated breaking free of the United States.

Of course, the conflicts over slavery that led to the Civil War loom large in his narrative. But Kreitner found many types of stories of times when groups of Americans — reactionaries and progressives — seriously contemplated calling it quits. “Secession,” writes Kreitner, “is the only kind of revolution Americans have ever known, and the only kind we’re ever likely to see.”

We spoke recently about whether separatist thought is particularly American, the heroic dis-unionism of the abolitionists, and how this history applies to our present-day crisis.

You are such a moron, 6ix. From 3 years back: NBA Viewership Hits Five Year Low; How Does League Fix Problem?

www.outkick.com/nba-viewership-hits-five-year-low-league-fix-problem/

Superteams can be both good for the NBA Finals, when the largest possible audience arrives to watch the NBA product, but simultaneously bad for the rest of the season, when fans tune out because they already know who the two best teams are. In fact, in a modern communications era when we all have so many different entertainment options to consider, doesn’t it make perfect sense that most people would ignore the NBA until the NBA Finals arrive? After all, if you already know it’s going to be Warriors-Cavs in the NBA Finals, why do you care about the journey to the final?

As is, unlike every other major sport in America, we already know exactly what will happen in the NBA, so why watch until the very end? After all, how many people would watch “Game of Thrones” from start to finish if they knew exactly how the series ended?

The NBA is broken and fans are abandoning its product save for the NBA Finals themselves. So how do you fix things? I’ve got three suggestions: . . .

I think if all three of these rules were implemented we could make the NBA great again.

As is, the NBA set a five year viewership low this year and is likely to continue to decline again next season. Without talent distributed somewhat evenly across the league, fans tune out until the NBA Finals. Given how many entertainment options fans have today, the NBA is at real risk of becoming a one month season, just like college basketball already has.

The top two officials at the Department of Homeland Security are serving unlawfully in their roles, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) said Friday, dealing a rebuke to President Trump’s affinity for filling senior executive roles in his administration with “acting” leaders who lack Senate confirmation.

www.govexec.com/management/2020/08/top-two-homeland-security-officials
-are-serving-illegally-gao-rules/167714

Good for the GAO, but how many Army divisions do they have to make Trump obey the law? This is a president who’s deliberately wrecking the post office to gain a partisan advantage over Democrats. He sent troops to Portland to create chaos that would help sell his law-and-order campaign theme. He’s pulled the birther card, that they are foreigners who can’t legally be President, against Senator Barack Obama, then Senator Ted Cruz, and now Senator Kamala Harris. He had protesters near the White House gassed so he could do a photo op. He pardons his pals even if they’ve committed crimes so obvious that even Attorney General Bill Barr calls their prosecution righteous. He retweets lunatic QAnon conspiracies. He tried to get a foreign leader to open a criminal investigation of a political opponent. He has relentlessly tried to undermine the U.S. Census. And he’s done all this stuff without protest from the Republican Party.

So what are the odds that Republican Senators will try to make him obey the law now? About zero, I think.
