Virginia used to execute more people than any state other than Texas. Until 2002, the state capped lawyers’ fees at $650 per murder case and $13 an hour, all but ensuring that many capital defendants would receive incompetent representation.

But Virginia hasn’t executed anyone since 2017, and it will soon abolish the death penalty altogether. The state legislature gave its final approval to legislation ending capital punishment in Virginia on Monday. Gov. Ralph Northam, a Democrat, intends to sign the bill.

Virginia’s decision to halt executions is possible because of demographic changes that have transformed the one-time Republican stronghold into an increasingly reliable blue state. Northern Virginia has long provided homes to much of Washington, DC’s cosmopolitan workforce, but this region has grown both more diverse and more Democratic in recent years, especially in DC’s formerly conservative exurbs.

Meanwhile, Richmond, Virginia’s young professionals bring liberal views that have transformed the politics of the former capital of the Confederacy.

Virginia’s previous aggressive use of the death penalty existed largely because capital defendants frequently received inadequate representation at their trials. As the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said in 2001, “People who are well represented at trial do not get the death penalty.”

Republicans’ New Strategy Is to Pretend Trump Never Happened
(At Least Until He Makes His Huge Comeback To Power, Which He Plans On Doing)

At Merrick Garland’s confirmation hearing, GOP senators remembered to be very upset about the Obama years.

It’s hard to know whether Republicans Hawley, Cruz, and Lee have somehow just forgotten the Trump years themselves, or if they really believe that the rest of us possess the short-term memories of a goldfish. Either way, it’s something of a relief to set our clocks back to the old-timey days of free-floating GOP whining about Obama and Eric Holder and gun control and all the ways Republicans have been made to suffer at the hands of bloodthirsty Democrats over the past few years. The free floating whining is probably the most tangible symbol of the return to business as usual.

Among the many reasons Garland is the perfect nominee for this moment? His refusal to be offended or drawn into stupid colloquies over political talking points so aged they smell like old cheese. He kept reminding the committee that he has been around a long time, and has seen a lot of things, and he isn’t going to fuss himself with their self-pity. His opening statement, in which he quoted Attorney General and later Supreme Court Justice Robert Jackson, was a subtle, preemptive caution that he simply has no time for petty politics. Quoting Jackson’s famous warning, Garland said, “The prosecutor has more control over life, liberty, and reputation than any other person in America. While prosecutors at their best are one of the most beneficent forces in our society, when they act from malice or other base motives, they are one of the worst.” He closed with Jackson’s admonition that “the citizen’s safety lies in the prosecutor who tempers zeal with human kindness, who seeks truth and not victims, who serves the law and not factional purposes, and who approaches the task with humility.”

It was an elegant formulation, and one that, with all the talk of Hunter Biden and James Comey and political prosecutions of innocent Republicans, felt both relevant and deeply out of step with our current moment. Perhaps more than anything, it was an indication that Garland, and the Justice Department, and the country are moving forward, and onward. In response, Senate Republicans appear to be retreating to the bland comforts on offer back in 2016, hand wringing over the Fast and the Furious (really Ted Cruz?) and the good old days in which Donald J. Trump was still just a TV clown.

I am not confident that Trump's legal problems will stop him from being renominated for President by the GOP.

Remember Trump's income tax evasions before 2016? Remember Trump University? It takes forever and a day for the American legal system to make a final decision about rich defendants. I don't think the courts can stop Trump in the next 4 years from running again. Maybe if courts are given 10 or 15 years Trump could be stopped by legal maneuvers, but the GOP primary season starts in about two years. The only people that could stop Trump quick enough to keep him off the primary ballots are the leaders of the GOP.

Trump is fortunate that the GOP leaders are guys like Mitch McConnell who don't have the guts to stop Trump. Mitch voted not guilty during the impeachment. Voting guilty was the easiest, quickest, most certain way to stop Trump from running again, but Mitch would NOT do it, which proves to me that Mitch won't stop Trump in other ways from getting on the primary ballots.

Trump will be fine only because Mitch McConnell decided that Trump was guilty but Mitch refused to convict. Mitch's speech makes that clear:

“In recent weeks, our ex-President’s associates have tried to use the 74 million Americans who voted to re-elect him as a kind of human shield against criticism.

“Anyone who decries his awful behavior is accused of insulting millions of voters.

“That is an absurd deflection.

“74 million Americans did not invade the Capitol. Several hundred rioters did.

“And 74 million Americans did not engineer the campaign of disinformation and rage that provoked it.

“One person did. (Hint: TRUMP is that one person)

***

“I have made my view of this episode very plain.

“But our system of government gave the Senate a specific task. The Constitution gives us a particular role.

“This body is not invited to act as the nation’s overarching moral tribunal.

“We are not free to work backward from whether the accused party might personally deserve some kind of punishment.

“Justice Joseph Story was our nation’s first great constitutional scholar. As he explained nearly 200 years ago, the process of impeachment and conviction is a narrow tool for a narrow purpose.

“Story explained this limited tool exists to “secure the state against gross official misdemeanors.” That is, to protect the country from government officers.

“If President Trump were still in office, I would have carefully considered whether the House managers proved their specific charge.

“By the strict criminal standard, the President’s speech probably was not incitement.

“However, in the context of impeachment, the Senate might have decided this was acceptable shorthand for the reckless actions that preceded the riot.

“But in this case, that question is moot. Because former President Trump is constitutionally not eligible for conviction. {Experts on the Constitution said Mitch was talking nonsense:

Why can’t Republicans quit the provably false claim that Donald Trump won the 2020 election?

It’s a bold-faced fabrication, easy to leave behind, and yet they refuse to let it go. I understand why the ex-president clings to it—everything about him demands that he be seen as a powerful awesome winner for all time. But what about people like Rep. Steve Scalise, who refused to concede the election results were valid just last weekend on ABC’s This Week, or Justice Clarence Thomas, who devoted a lone unhinged dissent to that possibility in a Pennsylvania elections case on Monday? CPAC, the Conservative Political Action Conference, is meeting—in person, in Florida—this week, and it is devoting seven different panels to stolen elections, with titles like “Other Culprits: Why Judges and Media Refused to Look at the Evidence” or “The Left Pulled Strings, Covered It Up, and Even Admits It” or “Protecting Elections Part VI: Failed States (PA, GA, NV, Oh My!)”

Why is the lie so sticky for so many? MSNBC’s Marc Ambinder reminds us of one big reason to persist in the fiction: The lie serves the party’s ultimate goal of suppressing the votes of likely Democrats. It’s clear that while even Trump’s own agencies determined that this election was “the most secure in history,” the record voter turnout in the midst of a pandemic means that the sustainability of the GOP as a political party now lies in constricting the franchise, including placing needless limits on mail-in voting. The laser focus of state-level Republican efforts right now is thus to limit voting rights. Ari Berman reported this week on a new analysis from the Brennan Center for Justice, showing that in the two months that constitute 2021 so far, 253 bills to restrict voting access have been introduced in 43 states, with Georgia serving as ground zero for experiments in restricting voting by mail, Sunday voting, and tweaking the Georgia runoff rules. Despite the fact that three recounts turned up no evidence of fraud in Georgia, the big lie with its reliance on false claims of rampant voter fraud remains the best way to ensure that the kind of people who vote for Democrats will be ever more challenged in their efforts to vote going forward. As Georgia’s Republican secretary of state, Brad Raffensperger, explained earlier this week, “Many of these bills are reactionary to a three-month disinformation campaign that could have been prevented.”

But it doesn’t stop at justifying vote suppression. The big lie does more than just work to preserve the hope of minority rule in future election cycles. And it does more than just tether the GOP to Donald Trump, which is clearly the path most of them have already chosen. The big lie also serves to cast doubt about the legitimacy of the Biden presidency, and the incredibly popular initiatives that are quickly being rolled out. So in addition to objecting to much-needed COVID-19 relief and other desperately needed measures, Republicans pressing the big lie serve to try to convince voters that the man who is currently governing in the public interest is a usurper who is only in office because of stolen votes. The “crime,” in this telling, is ongoing. The best way to persuade voters that they don’t want economic and lifesaving health care relief most of them really need is to cast doubt on the person who is offering it to them. As long as Biden’s efforts to correct for Trump’s negligence and mishandling of the various crises succeed, “stop the steal” will continue to be the deflection and distraction of choice.

The big lie, then, is not just nomenclature of those hellbent on restricting who can vote in the midterms and 2024. And it’s not just the language of the nihilism and denialism of those who want Joe Biden to fail and must feed the idea of his illegitimacy in order to do that. The big lie isn’t just aimed at election reform or undermining Democrats. It’s also aimed at elections themselves. It suggests, as do all seven of those CPAC panels, not just that people of color and poor people and young people in Detroit and Philadelphia cannot cast valid ballots, but also that elections themselves are “rigged” and “fixed” and that the courts and the media and state elections officials are all in on the tyranny. The endpoint, therefore, won’t simply lie in making it more difficult to vote, and more challenging to govern. The endgame lies in convincing voters that democracy itself is pointless. The big lie isn’t just an attempt to advantage Donald Trump in 2024 or Republican rule in the midterms. It’s an attempt to seed and nurture the forces of tyranny and autocracy, in precisely the fashion most big lies are intended.

UNLIKE THE PARA ABOVE, THIS IS FROM THE BLOOMBERG LINK.
Quote:

For Hitler and the Nazis the Big Lie was the “stab-in-the-back-myth.” It said that Imperial Germany was never defeated in World War I, and that it collapsed, surrendered and suffered the humiliation of the Versailles Treaty only because Jews and socialists at home betrayed their country. These domestic traitors were henceforth the new enemies. They had to be eliminated to Make Germany Great Again.

Trump’s Hillary's Big Lie is that the 2016 November election was stolen from him — that he, not Joe Biden, her, that she- not Domald Trump- iswas the rightful president for the next four years. All Americans who see it differently, including judges and civil servants who resisted Trump’s Hillary's entreaties to reject the vote tallies, are what the socialists and Jews were to the Nazis: domestic enemies. Russian agents.

Now, that para is what I call an inversion of reality. It was HILLARY who started the "stolen election" accusation. It accuses Trump of doing what Hillary, the DNC, and Biden* have done, and are continuing to do: As far as I can tell, it is the DEMS who've introduced the phrase "domestic terrorism" to describe their political rivals, and worse than that, it looks like they (like Hitler) are planning on passing and enacting a law to make that concept legally-enforceable.

Quote:

For a republic, a Big Lie is less like an exploding bomb and more like a corrosive acid. It works slowly. Hitler failed in his attempted coup, the Beer Hall Putsch of 1923, and even spent time in prison. He then kept failing for several more years. Incidentally, the Nazis never won more than 37.3% in an election. But Hitler nonetheless seized power in 1933.

If it took 14 years for the Weimar Republic to crumble, the terminal decline of the Roman Republic lasted a century. One analog between it and today’s America is an unhealthy rise in inequality, as rich Romans increasingly bought up the small farms of Italy and turned their former owners into plebeians in the slums of Rome. The U.S. equivalent is what Trump has called “American carnage.”

With this inequality came increasingly brazen corruption by the newly super-rich in Rome’s senate, assemblies and courts. This led to the rise of populism as a political style, as “populares” appealed directly to the mob to gain power and conservative “optimates” resisted them. Like many populists today, the populares — from the Gracchi brothers to Julius Caesar — were usually themselves members of the patrician upper class, but cynically exploited anti-elitism to amass power.

Then as now, taboos kept being broken. Political violence became commonplace in the Roman Forum and backstreets. And starting with Marius and Sulla, legions started being loyal to their commanders or charismatic individuals rather than the republic. An anxiety that this could also happen in Trump’s America recently motivated all ten living defense secretaries to issue a public warning against deploying the military in election disputes.

Once broken, taboos are hard to unbreak. And their damage is cumulative. Lies go unpunished, violence leaches from words into deeds, loyalties shift from country to parties or individuals. Gradually, the republic — its constitution, precedents and norms — becomes hollow. Citizens stop believing in it.

I think it takes more than one "big lie" to undo a nation, just like it took more than one "big lie" in Germany. The one Big Thing that led Germany on the path of Nazism was hyperinflation and joblessness. People were starving in the streets, and society was racked with misery and fear.

There are also a number of Big Lies underpinning America's demise, but the thing that will fell the USA will be finacial collapse.

Signym, 1kiki, and 6ix have such tiny real life problems, but they have even smaller ability to solve the problems, such that your lives are plagued with difficulties that capable people quickly solve or adjust to.

Black experts were often those who most forcefully rejected the argument that Trump’s appeal to voters was primarily based on feelings of “economic anxiety” or that Trump’s ideas should be taken “seriously but not literally.”

Two Black political experts stand out in particular. The Atlantic’s Adam Serwer argued that many of Trump’s supporters backed him because of his harshness toward conservatives’ perceived enemies (“The Cruelty Is the Point,” a Serwer piece was headlined.). And Ta-Nehisi Coates, then at The Atlantic, dubbed Trump “The First White President,” arguing that his rise was best understood as a backlash to Obama. Those pieces were written early in Trump’s presidency but are still memorable because they ended up accurately capturing some of the main themes of his tenure in office.

I know hundreds of Trump supporters. All of them, except the wealthy, are funny-in-the-head people who can talk for hours explaining why they support Trump. Most claim to be "Independent", making their own heroic and individualistic decisions, not following a party. Most claim that the Democrats "forced" them to vote for Trump. Most of them will talk your ears off about Trump. The wealthy are more succinct: their support is about money.

I can make solid deals with wealthy Trump voters because they are sane, honest, trustworthy people who make sense, but that's not true for the lower 99% of Trump's defenders and apologists. The top 1% recognize this about the rest.

Trump’s first post-presidential speech was just as bad as the speech he gave before the January 6 insurrection and January 13 Impeachment.

If anybody thought the January 6 insurrection and the ensuing second impeachment trial might’ve chastened Donald Trump, his CPAC speech on Sunday should’ve disabused them of that notion — and of any thoughts the former president would ever accept the reality that his loss to President Joe Biden was fair and legitimate.

Trump’s first speech since leaving the White House was heavy on “the big lie” — the false and long-debunked claim that the 2020 election was stolen from him — that inspired the deadly insurrection aimed at overturning his election loss.

“I may even decide to beat [Democrats] for a third time,” Trump said early on during his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), implying his loss to Biden was illegitimate while teasing the possibility of running again in 2024.

That remark was met with a standing ovation.

Trump claimed that “had we had a fair election, the results would’ve been much different” — even though election security officials from his own administration have confirmed Biden’s victory was the result of a free and fair election.

“The election was rigged,” he lied before attacking the Supreme Court for not overthrowing the results for him with language eerily similar to the way he attacked then-Vice President Mike Pence during his speech just before the January 6 insurrection.

“They didn’t have the guts or the courage to make the right decision,” Trump said.

Trump’s lie about the election being rigged was met with chants of “You won! You won!”

Trump claimed “it is undeniable” that election rules were “illegally changed.” But court after court rejected Trump’s so-called evidence that something was amiss during last November’s election, including as recently as last week.

It’s tempting to dismiss this rhetoric as the rantings of a man out of power who’s whiling away his days at his private club in Florida. But Trump may yet return to the White House. A straw poll taken at CPAC found him to be the candidate attendees most hoped to see run in 2024 by more than two to one over Ron DeSantis, even if the fact that only 68 percent of respondents said Trump should run again was a bit disappointing considering the conference was basically a weekend-long celebration of him.

But even if Trump is never again an elected official, the danger is that, as they did on January 6, Trump’s more fervent adherents might take him seriously and target a government their leader describes as illegitimate with violence.

I know hundreds of Trump supporters. All of them, except the wealthy, are funny people who will talk for hours explaining why they support Trump. Most claim to be "Independent", making their own heroic and individualistic decisions, not following a party. Most claim that the Democrats forced them to vote for Trump. Most of them will talk your ears off about Trump. The wealthy are more succinct: their support is about money.

The richest 1% of Trump voters recognize that Trump is a loudmouth lunatic who can be depended on to look after the needs of the 1%. The lower 99%, especially the lower 50%, are where they are economically because they can't see Trump for what he is. They can't recognize how incompetent Trump was as President. How could they? They can't recognize how incompetent they run their own lives, so what else would you expect from them?

I am talking about the 74 million who voted for grossly incompetent and mentally unstable Trump and revealed themselves for who they are. The humorous part is that Trump voters cannot understand why their lives aren't richer and easier when they should know from history that America has never been a gentle place for those who are mentally ill and/or incompetent. The Trump voters keep pretending that Democrats or Federal government or Big Business are blocking Trump voters from all the goodies expected in America, but it is Trump voters' lame brains and false beliefs that hold back Trump voters. Rise up, oppressed Trump voters and take back your country! But you never lost the country and you never understood what to do with your lives and, going by the Trumptards I know who have died out of general stupidity, you never will know.

When I bitch about Trump, I'm really bitching about the worthless 74 million who voted for him. None of the Trumptards in Texas understand in their guts how worthless they are in the sense that if they stopped coming to work, the work actually gets done just as fast without them, after a little time adjusting to the short term lose of one pair of hands attached to a dull brain. Having 74 million halfwits who fool themselves and each other into believing they are extremely valuable and yet underpaid will be an ongoing problem for the country, especially if they decide to take back what was never theirs and get paid what they don't deserve.

You and the Trumptards I know are so fucked up in the head that you will never rise very far up the economic ladder in America, except by fraud or theft, same ways Trump got where he is. On second thought, never mind about Trump. For a moment I was believing his propaganda about being a self-made man, getting ahead by cheating and lying, but I completely forgot his multi-billion dollar inheritance, after adjusting for inflation.

The Republican Party is the biggest threat to American democracy today. It is a radical, obstructionist faction that has become hostile to the most basic democratic norm: that the other side should get to wield power when it wins elections.

A few years ago, these statements may have sounded like partisan Democratic hyperbole. But in the wake of the January 6 attack on the Capitol and Trump’s acquittal in the Senate on the charge of inciting it, they seem more a plain description of where we’re at as a country.

But how deep does the GOP’s problem with democracy run, really? How did things get so bad? And is it likely to get worse?

Vox presents 13 charts that illustrate the depth of the problem and how we got here. The story they tell is sobering: At every level, from the elite down to rank-and-file voters, the party is permeated with anti-democratic political attitudes and agendas. And the prospects for rescuing the Republican Party, at least in the short term, look grim indeed.

DoD Report Describes Trump Doctor Ronny Jackson as a Lecherous Boozehound and All-Around Terrible Colleague

Luckily, Ronny Jackson is now a member of Congress.

Ronny Jackson, it appears, made many, many enemies during his rise as a Navy medical officer that ultimately landed him a gig as the physician to the president of the United States. Donald Trump, however, was not one of those many, many detractors. Trump was so enamored with Jackson, a square-jawed doctor with a nose for the political winds, that Trump tried to hand Jackson a spot in his cabinet in 2018, as the head of the Department of Veterans Affairs. Jackson’s nomination, however, was ultimately scuttled when former colleagues and subordinates began expressing how they really felt about Jackson.

What emerged was an unflattering portrait of a maniacal boss that liked the sauce, not to mention the the odd sleeping pill, all of which resulted in numerous inappropriate interactions with female subordinates and coworkers. The blowback was sufficient enough to prompt an investigation by the Department of Defense inspector general, which, after years of digging, confirmed a number of grisly details about Jackson, who with Trump’s backing ran and won a seat in Congress last year representing the Texas panhandle.

Tired argument, buddy. And the only one you've got.

How many democrats, except for the rich ones like you (:laugh), get to pay to have trees cut down from their yard in full when the bill comes and don't just add it to the ever-mounting pile of debt that makes them wage slaves for life?

Keep lying about your money and how it makes you better than I am.

If you are at all similar to the Texans I know who voted for Trump in 2020, there are so many things wrong with your life, 6ix. About the only thing I think I know for sure about the mess you made for yourself is that your teeth have been pulled because you neglected them. In contrast, I have all my teeth, including the wisdom teeth.

With less certainty, I think I know that 6ix lives on $4,500 per year. $3,895 per month is what I'll get from Social Security when I turn 70. My wife will get more. We both had the Pfizer vaccine. Neither of us stayed home worried about catching Covid-19 because we do what needs to be done. We did not follow the chaotic directions from Trump and the slightly smoother governor of Texas.

On the other hand, the Trumptards we know followed Trump's advice and are dead or coming back from the hospital half dead because they are no more careful about catching disease than 6ix was careful about his teeth.

The 75 million Trumptards are a burden on America because of the way they live, work (or not work), cheat on taxes, and raise their children -- the next generation of under-educated, whiny, helpless Trumptards fearful about work, or Communism, or Socialism, or a $15/hour minimum wage.

Good thing I'm not a Trumptard or I'd be worried about what will happen in the future. 6ix, maybe you need a gun for protection? In Texas, there is a shortage of ammo because the Trumptards are worried, but I'm pretty sure a gun can't fix what is wrong with the way they live and think.

You can lie all you want about how great you have it. I don't care buddy.

My story is a story of overcoming adversity. Much of that adversity, admittedly, is due to my own bad choices.

I'm better every single day. I'm making the right choices. I've been sober for 4 years and 3 months and doing whatever it takes to turn my life around.

Do I have my setbacks? Sure. Just like every other person in the world does. But you don't hear me bitching about them for long before I take the bull by the horns and hop right on over it.

And I got no more tears to shed over spilled milk, especially not when some random asshole online keeps trying to make me shed them.

In contrast, what are you doing?

The same shit you've been doing since the first day I was sober.

You can't stop posting about Trump and Texas Republicans, even though Biden* won* the election*, and Democrats run both the House and the Senate.

You're a fucking broken record, and a completely static human being who bitches an awful lot about everything for a guy who supposedly has it all figured out.

Trumptards clog up the machinery of government and business, causing the commode to overflow.

They live and die in vain for the same demented reasons they support Trump:

Younger and middle-age Americans have been dying at higher rates over the past three decades, marking what is becoming a public health crisis across the US workforce.

Among the causes of death increasingly striking working-age Americans between 1990 and 2017 are drug overdose, alcohol use and suicides, according to a new report published Tuesday by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

P.S. You check that IP address yet? You need help figuring out how to do it?

Hell... I'll be a real nice guy and even let you know how to change it. Won't matter much though since I'd still have the dates and times that you had the old one you posted all the naughty stuff with.

The Old GOP Isn’t Coming Back

This weekend, as Republicans gathered in Orlando, Florida, for the annual Conservative Political Action Conference, the agenda wasn’t free markets or a strong foreign policy. Instead, their focus was on solidifying former President Donald Trump’s control of the party. What united the speakers, including Trump and the party’s top 2024 presidential prospects, was their contempt for public health measures and their embrace of lies about election fraud. To any Republican who dissents from this madness, the conference sent an unambiguous message: Get out.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis kicked off the event by denouncing “lockdown states”—those that restricted business activity during the pandemic—and boasting that he travels only to “free states.” Another speaker, COVID demagogue Alex Berenson, blamed lockdowns on Amazon, Facebook, and Google, which “profit from keeping you in your house.” A third speaker, conservative provocateur James O’Keefe, denounced Facebook for censoring lies about COVID vaccines. Others derided Dr. Anthony Fauci, the federal government’s chief medical officer.

Several members of Congress, including Rep. Jim Banks, the chair of the 159-member House Republican Study Committee, bragged onstage and in interviews about not wearing masks. Sen. Ted Cruz, addressing the audience on Friday, ridiculed the idea that people should have to cover their faces after standing up from meals at restaurants. South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, whose state leads the nation in recent COVID deaths per capita, denounced mask mandates and noted with pride that South Dakota was the only state that had never ordered any businesses to close. “No governor should ever dictate to their people which activities are officially approved or not approved,” she declared.

Lawmakers and former Trump officials also peddled fantasies about election fraud. They alleged or suggested that the election was “rigged” and “stolen,” through “mysterious late-night ballot dumps” and cars “unloading piles of ballots … in the wee small hours.” They lauded Mike Lindell, Sidney Powell, Rudy Giuliani, and other conspiracy theorists. Matt Schlapp, the chairman of the American Conservative Union, which hosted the conference, claimed that Trump had been victimized by “widespread voter fraud” in “cities run by the Democrat machine.” Tom Fitton, the president of Judicial Watch, another right-wing organization, told the crowd that Trump “had the votes to win,” but the “vote totals were changed because of unprecedented and extraordinary counting after Election Day.” Sen. Marsha Blackburn expressed dismay that the media had dared “to fact-check [Trump], the leader of the free world.”

The speakers dismissed court rulings that failed to confirm their bogus allegations. Schlapp claimed to have “firsthand” knowledge that “evidence of illegal voting” had never been “really scrutinized.” He falsely asserted that judges “in almost every case” had refused to intervene because (according to his misrepresentation of their written opinions) the whole topic of election fraud was “just too hot politically.” Trump gave the same excuse in a speech to the conference on Sunday, arguing that courts had failed to step in because they lacked the “guts” to confront the fraud.

Many people who identify themselves as Republicans don’t share these views. They support security measures and public health guidance. They don’t believe lies about a stolen election, and they don’t countenance religious discrimination against Muslims. If you’re one of these people, the signal from the party leaders at CPAC is that you don’t belong. Banks, whose caucus represents more than three-quarters of the House GOP, scorned anti-Trump Republicans. Fitton dismissed election-fraud skeptics as “loser Republicans.” “We’ve got a hell of a lot of RINOS out there,” bellowed Dan Bongino, a right-wing radio host, as the crowd cheered. “Primary season starts now. … Get ’em out! Go! We’re not gonna miss you! Please, get lost!”
