Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

U.S., Saudis Look for Iran Link in Weapon Systems

"They say they can’t galvanize world support for their view unless they can draw a clear link back to Tehran, which has denied any role in the attacks."

Having so far failed to find one, they have to keep on looking.

Watch Tulsi Gabbard Wipe The Floor With A Well-Known War Hawk

“Look Neil, I’m a soldier,” Gabbard began after Cavuto went on the offensive. “And I took an oath as a soldier as well as a member of Congress to support and defend our Constitution of the United States, to serve the American people.”

“And it’s a huge disgrace to hear our commander-in-chief basically put us in a position —the American people, our men and women in uniform, our military assets — in a position where we are servants of the Saudi kingdom. Standing by and awaiting their orders on how we should proceed.”

Indeed Gabbard remains a rare voice: as a veteran seeking to dismantle American Empire and its regime change wars abroad, akin to a "Ron Paul of the Left".

This is why it appears the Democrats are doing everything they can to keep her out of the debates, despite her consistently polling higher than some of those who do make it to the stage.

And if democrats don't do anything different, how are they any better?

A Year Later, Iran Finds Evaporating Sympathy at the U.N. This year could not be more different.

Suddenly, President Hassan Rouhani and his witty, often biting American-educated foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, are on the defensive. They are denying any Iranian involvement in the destruction of two major Saudi oil facilities, an assertion that even former Secretary of State John Kerry, who negotiated the nuclear accord four years ago and has become its biggest defender, finds far-fetched. Iran, he said, was behind the attack “one way or the other.”

Trump defends Syria decision as GOP leaders push back

The move drew immediate outrage from some of the president's closest allies in Congress, with Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham calling the decision "a disaster." And Syria's Kurds accused the U.S. of turning its back on its allies and risking gains made in the fight against the Islamic State group.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

What's the alternative? Committing USA troops to fighting Turkish troops? Hey, Turkey is still a NATO member, after all, and is THE largest military in NATO besides the USA.

The Kurds helped us in Syria because they were hoping to bite off a chunk for their own homeland, it's not like they were disinterestedly "helping" fight terrorism. Not only did they (temporarily) gain control of their homeland with USA help) they also gained control of the large chunk of territory east of the Euphrates populated mainly by Sunni Arabs, who resent the hell out of their Kurdish overlords, and which contains the bulk of Syria's oil.

Their bid for an oil-rich breakaway region ran into the hard wall of power-geopolitics.

So, who is on what side, and who has the most power? Israel, the KSA, and the USA wanted to depose Assad (using jihadist and Kurdish proxies) or - failing that- to remove oil resources from Syrian control. The Kurds wanted their bite of Syria. Turkey initially joined the effort with the idea that they could begin the process of re-creating the Ottoman Empire by annexing part of Syria too. That clumsy unsuccessful coup and assassination attempt on Erdogan sure turned HIS calculations around!

Syrian, Russia, Iran and (sometimes) Turkey are on the other side. They have had the most military success in keeping Syria together and fighting ISIS and al Qaeda and Kurdish proxies at the same time. What does the USA think it should do: fight all of them all at once?

That's just plain suicide.

And besides, what are we fighting FOR? I understand that we want to keep Saudi Arabia safe ... that's part of our petrodollar agreement with them, and we do depend mightily on the petrodollar! But what does Syria have to do with that? Syria is not a threat to the KSA. Neither is Yemen. In fact, Iran isn't either. What's the point of all of this fighting?

Israelis see Trump’s Syria pullout as a ‘betrayal’ that could help unravel the region

JERUSALEM —The abrupt withdrawal of U.S. troops from northeastern Syria and subsequent Turkish attacks on Kurdish fighters have badly rattled Israel’s national security experts, who decried President Trump’s action as a betrayal of loyal allies and evidence that Israel’s most vital supporter is a fickle friend at best.

This seems a place to put this:

Saudi Arabia claims to have restored nearly 100% (or 100%, depending on reporting) of pre-attack oil production.

Looking at global oil prices, after a spike immediately post-attack, prices seemed to have returned to pre-attack levels.

While it's always possible other countries ramped up production, or market manipulation brought oil prices back down (yeah, whatever happened to those dozens of tankers offshore unable to offload crude at existing prices a couple years back?), a rough guess is that indeed, production has been restored.

Pelosi says Trump had 'meltdown' over House vote on Syria

WASHINGTON, Oct 16 (Reuters) - U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Democratic leaders' cut short a White House meeting after Republican President Donald Trump had a "meltdown" over a House of Representatives vote condemning his Syria withdrawal.

Trump called Pelosi a "third-rate politician" and the meeting deteriorated into a diatribe, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer told reporters.
"What we witnessed on the part of the president was a meltdown. Sad to say," Pelosi told reporters as she and the other Democrats emerged from the White House.

BTW: Trump has been working very hard to keep his election promises. And one of them is getting out of Syria. He said something that boils it down to its essence: "They've been fighting each other for a thousand years." He's right. They've been fighting each other for a thousand years, and they'll keep fighting each other until they settle it among themselves. We have no business being in the middle of it.

And let Russia, Syria, and Iran finish the fucking job they started and FINALLY get rid of ISIS and assorted rebranded terrorists. It's not like we did anything except arm them to the tune of TONS of equipment and supplies every day, day in and day out, for years; fail to find their very obvious oil convoy into Turkey, to sell stolen oil on the black market to fund their activities (it was obvious we were turning a blind eye) ... till Russia put a stop to it by bombing the shit out of their transport; and provide them with intel.

ISIS Reaps Gains of U.S. Pullout From Syria

American forces and their Kurdish-led partners in Syria had been conducting as many as a dozen counterterrorism missions a day against Islamic State militants, officials said. That has stopped.

Now, analysts say that Mr. Trump’s pullout has handed the Islamic State its biggest win in more than four years and greatly improved its prospects. With American forces rushing for the exits, in fact, American officials said last week that they were already losing their ability to collect critical intelligence about the group’s operations on the ground.

U.S. forces launch operation in Syria targeting ISIS leader Baghdadi, officials say

Special Operations forces conducted a raid in northwest Syria’s Idlib province aimed at the militant leader, officials said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss activities that have not yet been made public.

And we got em. Russia, Russia is a joke. All it takes to freeze Russia in it's tracks is a dozen Americans.

Al-Baghdadi Raid Was a Victory Built on Factors Trump Derides

WASHINGTON — The death of the Islamic State’s leader in a daring nighttime raid vindicated the value of three traditional American strengths: robust alliances, faith in intelligence agencies and the projection of military power around the world.

But President Trump has regularly derided the first two. And even as he claimed a significant national security victory on Sunday, the outcome of the raid did little to quell doubts about the wisdom of his push to reduce the United States military presence in Syria at a time when terrorist threats continue to develop in the region.

US Troops Have New Mission Of Securing Oil In Syria

Man Trump has really fucked things up. He said the troops were coming home per his campaign promise. Not so, they are staying in Syria. He only moved them so Putin and turkey could slaughter our allies.

As Kurds Tracked ISIS Leader, U.S. Withdrawal Threw Raid Into Turmoil

Yet even as the Syrian Kurdish fighters were risking their lives in the hunt that led to Mr. al-Baghdadi’s death this weekend, Mr. Trump abruptly shattered America’s five-year partnership with them.

They were still waiting on Oct. 6, when Mr. Trump announced after a phone call with Mr. Erdogan that he was removing American troops from the path of a Turkish attack on the United States’ Syrian partners.
The ensuing fighting killed more than 200 people and delayed the raid on Mr. al-Baghdadi’s villa as Mr. Abdi’s forces shifted their focus to fighting the Turks.
