President Trump Tweeted Against His Own Bill. Now Congress May Delay the Vote

President Donald Trump’s morning penchant for firing off controversial messages on Twitter potentially derailed his administration’s policy Thursday, after he came out against a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act renewal his own Administration is pushing.

The tweet came just hours before the House was preparing a much-anticipated vote on a six-year extension of Section 702 of the FISA program, which allows U.S. intelligence agencies to monitor foreign communications.

House rejects limits on surveillance program after confusion from Trump tweets

WASHINGTON — A proposal to impose significant new privacy limits on the National Security Agency’s warrantless surveillance program failed in a House vote Thursday, despite a yearslong effort by a bipartisan group of lawmakers to bolster civil liberties protections.

Lawmakers are now taking up a bill that would extend the legal basis for that program for six years with only minor changes.

But as a prelude to final action, the House of Representatives voted 233-183 to defeat an amendment that would have limited its extension to four years and added a series of privacy protections. The vote was a significant defeat for civil liberties advocates in the debate that broke out in 2013, following leaks by intelligence contractor Edward Snowden.

Nearly all members of National Park Service advisory panel resign in frustration

Three-quarters of the members of a federally chartered board advising the National Park Service abruptly quit Monday night out of frustration that Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke had refused to meet with them or convene a single meeting last year.

The resignation of nine out of 12 National Park System Advisory Board members leaves the federal government without a functioning body to designate national historic or natural landmarks. It also underscores the extent to which federal advisory bodies have become marginalized under the Trump administration. In May 2017, Zinke suspended all outside committees while his staff reviewed their composition and work.

Once again I have to applaud those with high paying, cushy government gigs and their bravery to quit and leave their positions open for anybody else who might be much more willing to just play ball and do whatever they need to do to keep a real job in this economy.

Way to fight the good fight, cowards. I hope you regret that decision to quit and you can't find a decent job paying anything close what you got paid before.

I hear Walmart is hiring.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

In private conversations, Trump has told advisers that he doesn’t think the 2018 election has to be as bad as others are predicting. He has referenced the 2002 midterms, when George W. Bush and Republicans fared better after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, these people said.
http://wapo.st/2DIU1sZ

I’m pretty skeptical that the political dynamics of September 2001 would be replicated today. But regardless, this is an odd line of thought for an incumbent president and his team to be entertaining.

If Trump thinks a terrorist attack would serve his political interests — either through a blind rally ‘round the flag effect or by specifically validating anti-immigrant demagoguery or what have you — how hard is he really working to keep the country safe?

Trump Doesn’t Believe in His Own Foreign Policy. Does That Matter?

here have been a great many odd things about the first year of Donald Trump’s presidency, but one of the oddest is the vast distance that has opened up between the president and his own policies. Presidents never fully get their way on the entire range of foreign policy issues their administrations confront, although they do tend to get their way on the issues they care most about. But as I discuss in my new book, American Grand Strategy in the Age of Trump, this president’s core geopolitical beliefs and the foreign policy executed in his name have in several cases seemed 180 degrees apart.

The president clearly loathes NATO and believes that protecting the European allies is a fool’s errand, yet his administration has continued and even expanded efforts to reinforce deterrence along NATO’s eastern flank. He has repeatedly called for a new relationship with Russia, but his administration has now decided to sell lethal defensive weaponry to Ukraine, and is taking initial steps to develop a land-based, intermediate-range nuclear delivery system to counter Russian violations of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty.

'US counter terror air strikes doubled in Trump’s first year"

"The number of US air strikes jumped in Yemen and Somalia in 2017, pointing to an escalation of the global war on terror.

President Donald Trump inherited the framework allowing US aircraft to hit suspected terrorists outside of declared battlefields from his predecessor, Barack Obama. Bar some tinkering, his administration has largely stuck within the framework set by the previous one.

However, the quantity of operations has shot up under President Trump. Strikes doubled in Somalia and tripled in Yemen.

In Afghanistan, where the Bureau has been monitoring US airstrikes since it was officially declared a noncombat mission at the end of 2014, the number of weapons dropped is now approaching levels last seen during the 2009-2012 surge."

http://www.newsweek.com/trump-has-already-killed-more-civilians-obama-
us-fight-against-isis-653564

"The U.S.-led coalition fighting the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) has killed more civilians during President Donald Trump's first seven months in office than in the three years it existed under his predecessor, according to the latest estimate by a U.K.-based monitor.

Meanwhile, there are signs that the drone war may be returning to Pakistan, where attacks were also up, compared with 2016."

http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-is-ordering-airstrikes-at-5-times
-the-pace-obama-did-2017-4

"Trump is ordering airstrikes at 5 times the pace Obama did

US airstrikes in eastern Yemen over the weekend targeted Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, continuing the effort to disrupt "a terror organization that presents a very significant threat to the" US, a Navy spokesman said on Monday.

The weekend strikes, reportedly about 20 in total and mostly unmanned, brings the total against AQAP since February 28 to 70.

All told, Trump has ordered 75 drone strikes or raids in non-battlefield settings during his first 74 days in office, according to Micah Zenko, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations."

http://www.newsweek.com/trumps-presidency-only-10-months-old-and-new-d
ata-his-airstrikes-alarm-684084

When President Donald Trump took office in January, it was unclear whether the bombast from his campaign would translate into an aggressive new strategy against terrorism. At campaign rallies he pledged to “bomb the hell” out of the Islamic State militant group (ISIS). He openly mused about killing the families of terrorists, a blatant violation of the Geneva Conventions, which prohibits violence against noncombatants.

Ten months into his presidency, a clearer picture is emerging. The data indicate several alarming trends.

According to research from the nonprofit monitoring group Airwars, the first seven months of the Trump administration have already resulted in more civilian deaths than under the entirety of the Obama administration. Airwars reports that under Obama’s leadership, the fight against ISIS led to approximately 2,300 to 3,400 civilian deaths. Through the first seven months of the Trump administration, they estimate that coalition air strikes have killed between 2,800 and 4,500 civilians.

Researchers also point to another stunning trend—the “frequent killing of entire families in likely coalition airstrikes.” In May, for example, such actions led to the deaths of at least 57 women and 52 children in Iraq and Syria.

The vast increase in civilian deaths is not limited to the anti-ISIS campaign. In Afghanistan, the U.N. reports a 67 percent increase in civilian deaths from U.S. airstrikes in the first six months of 2017 compared to the first half of 2016."

It's always possible to look at very small number - like US airstrikes in Yemen - and talk about how they've 'doubled'. Maybe that means they went up from 1 to 2.
What's missing is the totality for 2017.

Obama's record:

https://www.cfr.org/blog/how-many-bombs-did-united-states-drop-2016

In President Obama’s last year in office, the United States dropped 26,172 bombs in seven countries. This estimate is undoubtedly low, considering reliable data is only available for airstrikes in Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, and Libya, and a single "strike," according to the Pentagon’s definition, can involve multiple bombs or munitions. In 2016, the United States dropped 3,028 more bombs—and in one more country, Libya—than in 2015.

Most (24,287) were dropped in Iraq and Syria.

Trump, after blaming the “fake, disgusting news” for lying about his meeting with Queen Elizabeth, said yesterday:

The president then discussed the country’s names, explaining: ‘People call it “Britain”, they call it “Great Britain”. They used to call it “England”, different parts. But the UK — great respect.’

He just can’t get this off his brain. Is it truly possible that still no one has explained this whole England/Britain thing to him? Or have they tried and he just can’t comprehend it?

Trump repeatedly uses the phrase “enemies of the people” in his attacks on the media. That phrase became well known in the 20th century when it was adopted by dictators from Stalin to Mao, and Nazi propagandists, to justify their murderous purges of millions. Stalin was perhaps most closely associated with the phrase.

That being said, I don't think that the MSM on either side is a friend of the people. They're careless, reckless and all they give a shit about is their ratings, so they cater to one rabid fanbase or the other, and the end result is you get two completely different ridiculous stories about the same events depending on which team you're rooting for.

I guess at the end of the day you just have to remember that such a small percentage of Americans even watch the news if you look at the ratings, so most people are still pretty sane.

I truly think you're not picking up the meaning for all the static noise in the background. I was an adult when the Watergate Tapes came out. Making it the top story on TV and newspapers was not the fault of the media overhyping something. It was BIG because Nixon gave short and snappy explanations on tape for complex policies. Short and snappy was the complete opposite of the long, complex explanations Nixon gave publicly in speeches and interviews. Well, even back then there were many real people I knew that couldn't understand the meaning of Nixon's taped words in 1974. They thought the Watergate Tapes were not a big deal, but they were not the majority. They are now and that explains the present day majority's extremely slow reaction to Trump. The slow ones hear only static noise without the underlying signal from Trump.

On the tapes, Nixon made his confessions in private. Trump makes his in public. Since I was there, I know Americans were more alert 44 years ago to what the President's explanations meant.

The Watergate tapes stand as one of the stunning, implausible twists of American history. Nixon confessed his crimes and recorded himself in the process. Who does that?

In their book The Final Days, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein write, “the single thread that linked the problems together was the President’s tapes. The lawyers represented a President who had bugged himself, who had blurted his secrets into hidden microphones. They had not yet heard the tapes, nor seen any transcripts of them. The President would not permit it. They were told to mount a defense, but were not given the information to do so.”

The Watergate scandal became about those tapes — the battle to make them public and expose Nixon’s private confessions. Without the tapes, a resignation would have been unlikely. This was a flimsy bit of providence, a ridiculous chance act upon which the integrity of our political system came to rest. But so it went.

The White House today has no internal taping system. But it has, perhaps, something serving the same purpose: Donald Trump himself.

Trump has a reputation as a liar, and he is one, when it serves him. But he also has a tendency to blurt out the truth in explosive moments of public honesty. “At times Trump acts publicly the way Nixon acted privately, as we know him from the [White House] tapes,” NYU professor and former Nixon Library director Tim Naftali told Vox.

The seminal instance of this came in Trump’s 2017 interview with NBC’s Lester Holt after firing FBI Director James Comey. The White House had crafted the story carefully, telling reporters the cause was low morale at the bureau and Comey’s handling of the Hillary Clinton investigation, and releasing a cautiously worded statement making clear that Trump was following the advice of staff.

Statement from @WhiteHouse @PressSec on @FBI Director https://t.co/EdBRntMim5

— Sarah Sanders (@PressSec) May 9, 2017

Then Trump sat down with Holt. What he said next was the kind of thing that Nixon said on the tapes, only Trump said it openly, in public, with minimal prompting:

But regardless of [the] recommendation, I was going to fire Comey. Knowing there was no good time to do it! And in fact when I decided to just do it I said to myself, I said, “You know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made-up story, it’s an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should’ve won.”

It is unusual for a president to confess to obstructing justice during a televised interview, but that’s more or less what happened. If you dig through Nixon’s tapes, you will rarely find him being quite that explicit.

But that kind of thing happens a lot with Trump. He stands next to Vladimir Putin and says, aloud:

My people came to me, Dan Coats came to me and some others and said they think it’s Russia. I have President Putin. He just said it’s not Russia. I will say this. I don’t see any reason why it would be.

I mean, imagine if that came out on a secret recording.

Well... maybe the MSM shouldn't have been throwing everything but the kitchen sink at Trump.

It would actually be a real shame if there is something to this Russia narrative and nobody pays it any mind since the MSM has been relentlessly attacking every single thing that the man has done and said since day one.

Oh yeah, and calling everyone that voted for him a racist and misogynist hasn't helped either.

I am not surprised that you are blaming the media. I saw an explanation of what is happening to you in an article called Amusing Ourselves to Death:

Trump emerged out of reality television, cable news, and caps-lock tweeting, and his great gift is his ability to own our attention in the precise ways those mediums own our attention — by stoking conflict, deepening grievance, starting fights, and turning everything, absolutely everything, into can’t-look-away entertainment.

It’s damn hard for the media to resist because Trump’s behavior really is so outlandish, and because if everyone else in the media is covering Trump’s latest comments you feel like you’re missing the story if you focus elsewhere, and because there really is audience demand, and because Trump rallies make for damn good TV segments and Facebook posts.

Trump manages the government clumsily, but he controls public attention masterfully. He is showing, daily, how the truth can be drowned under a sea of irrelevance, how easily Trump can defend the indefensible if he casts it as entertainment.

The politicians who follow him will learn his lessons.

Trump says tariffs are working “big time.” Here are 5 pieces of evidence that’s not the case.

1. Farmers needed a $12 billion bailout

“Tariffs are the greatest,” Trump declared in a tweet in late July. Hours later, reports emerged that his administration is planning to give $12 billion in emergency aid to farmers hurt by those “great” tariffs.

As Vox’s Tara Golshan laid out, the agriculture industry is among the hardest-hit sectors as foreign countries retaliate with tariffs of their own. China, Mexico, and Canada have responded to the US’s measures with taxes on American soybeans, dairy, pork, apples, and potatoes, among other products. Prices for soybeans have dropped to a 10-year low, and soybean exporters rushed to get their product out of the country earlier this year ahead of the impending trade war.

Trump’s trade tactics, effectively, have necessitated a $12 billion farmer bailout.

2. Other countries are making trade deals without the US

After taking office, Trump announced that he would withdraw the United States from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and promised to make good on his campaign-trail promises to renegotiate new deals he deems more fair, including an overhaul of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). That’s not exactly how it’s worked out — there’s still no new NAFTA, and the bilateral deals Trump has focused so much of his rhetoric on have largely failed to materialize.

What’s more, other countries are moving on without the US.

Japan and the EU in July agreed to an outline for a trade deal that would rival the size of NAFTA — a consequence, in part, of Trump’s TPP withdrawal. The same goes for the 11-country Asia-Pacific trade agreement signed in March, which will reduce tariffs on nations that together make up more than 13 percent of the global economy. (Had the US signed on to the deal under the TPP, it would have represented 40 percent.) China has also been shopping for new trade agreements as the US has stepped back from the global stage.

“Other countries now have very strong incentives to do business independent of the US and independent of the dollar,” Moody’s Analytics economist Mark Zandi recently told me.

3. The tariffs are showing up in consumer prices and business decisions

Tariffs are taxes imposed on goods and services. Trump’s case is that it’s foreign companies that pay them, but ultimately, they often wind up being shouldered by US consumers. And there’s evidence that’s what’s happening now.

Aluminum and steel tariffs could cost the US beer industry $348 million per year alone, according to the Washington Post, citing the Beer Institute. The rest of the beverage industry is taking taking a hit, too: Coca-Cola, for example, has said it has to raise prices. The National Association of Home Builders has said that Trump’s tariffs on softwood lumber from Canada have increased the cost of building a home by $7,000. Machinery maker Caterpillar has said it will raise prices. Winnebago is upping the cost of its RVs, too, and washing machine prices have spiked.

Harley-Davidson has said Trump’s trade tactics will result in it moving some production overseas altogether. Mid-Continent Nail announced layoffs because of them.

4. The tariffs aren’t making a dent in the United States’ debt

Trump’s claim on Sunday that the tariffs would allow the US to start paying down “large amounts” of the US’s $21 trillion debt isn’t true.

The amount of tariffs the president has imposed so far — about $85-billion worth of foreign goods — isn’t enough to make a dent in the US’s $21 trillion deficit. The Washington Post’s Heather Long did the math and found that Trump’s tariffs would raise about $21 billion at most, or 0.1 percent of the total debt:

Since taking office, Trump has added substantially to the debt, with a large tax cut and additional government spending on the military and various domestic priorities. In total, he has added about $1.6 trillion to the debt since taking office (higher if you take into account additional interest charges), according to the Congressional Budget Office. The money raised from the tariffs does little to counterbalance all the money Trump has added to the debt.

He has also announced $12 billion in aid to farmers hurt by the tariffs. That is additional spending that further reduces the money raised from his tariffs by nearly half.

5. We still don’t know what winning looks like for Trump

As eager as Trump is to declare a victory lap on trade, it’s still unclear what exactly a victory would entail.

The aluminum and steel tariffs were imposed under the justification of protecting national security, but they are hitting the US’s closest allies and partners and could be ultimately undermining America’s goal to put pressure on China. It’s unclear whether the national security justification is anything more than an excuse for Trump to do something he already had his mind set on doing.

Trump got some concessions out of European Commissioner Jean-Claude Juncker in July, including a pledge that the EU will import more US soybeans and liquefied natural gas, while the US said it would stop future tariffs while they continue to negotiate over the steel and aluminum taxes. Still, it’s unknown what the broader goal is here.

And on the China front, the trade war seems to be ratcheting up, with both sides considering more measures. Multiple experts recently told me that there’s still an off-ramp to the trade war, but a big part of the problem is that no one knows what Trump really wants — including, perhaps, Trump himself. The president has focused much of his energy on talking about trade deficits, but economists say he seems to sometimes misunderstand them, and he’s never laid out an exact picture of what, in his mind, constitutes a good trade deal.

“There’s always a way out of these things, there’s always a deal to be done,” Edward Alden, senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, recently told me. “But it’s very hard with the Trump administration to figure out what those deals might look like.”

For now, it looks like Trump’s just going to keep insisting everything’s going well.
