The cheering from the employees of SpaceX is pure awesome !!

Not just a great launch, not just duel booster rocket landings ( assuming the core landed, but don't know for sure ) but then the live stream from the payload, with a roaster and Starman in the driver's seat ??? And the damn thing is actually going to Mars !! And will be in orbit for... oh, a billion years.

Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured... but not everyone must prove they are a citizen

My local MSM News said it was going to orbit the Sun.

The center core did not safely return to Earth because two of its three engines failed to light during the landing burn. So, Musk said, it slammed into the ocean at 300mph, throwing debris onto its nearby drone ship and taking out two of the boat’s engines.

The twin boosters landed near the launch site in Florida. Musk expressed amazement. Of the synchronized booster landings, he said, “That was epic. It was probably the most exciting thing I’ve ever seen.” And of Starman, the spacesuited mannequin, he quipped, “You can tell it’s real because it looks so fake. We have way better CGI.”

Fortunately, from his perspective, the launch had confirmed the company’s ability to model rocket launches on computers. “It gives me a lot of faith for our next architecture. It gives me confidence that BFR is really quite workable.” The BFR is the Big Falcon Rocket, a super-massive reusable rocket with 31 Raptor engines topped by a staggeringly tall 48-meter spacecraft.

It's like something out of science fiction.

Yeah, cheers to the big dreamers that actually do these things. The 2 rockets landing was amazing, "that's what it's suppose to be like."

I don't get landing on a drone ship on the ocean though. The rocking undulating ocean. It's been hard enough on stable surfaces. But, he didn't ask me!

The booster did not have enough fuel to fly back to Florida. It is an either/or choice: recover the booster by landing on a ship or lose the booster forever by dropping into the sea.

I'm thinking of the software needed to calculate the maneuvering jet thrusts to align with a constantly moving surface. All three of the fuel containers are cylinders and as such a nightmare in terms of aero dynamics needed for controlling latitude longitude x/y maneuvering. It's made manageable by having a flat unmoving surface, because that is a fixed point/number. But having one that is moving differently all the time and without anyway to project its movements seems like an almost impossible task. Again, hats off to the designers... once they get it working, and I have no doubt they will.
