Tried to find the orijinal thred for this, but it must be WAY back around 2012 wen I got the idea. So, just started a new wun.

Its a shame, but good ideaz don't automaticly float to the top in our sosiety. I came up with the Gun Incident Tax going on 6 yirz ago, yet its virtually unknown. Politicianz are still bleating "thoughts and prayers" wenever skool children get massacred, hiding behind the suppozedly indestructable 2nd amendment.

Wut makes it unlikely to ever be repealed iz the NRA spending 100 million per yir promoting 'gun rites', including 50,000,000$ in campane contributionz.

The hi skool kidz involved with this latest insident hav had enuf. Therez a facebook wave growing calling for the 2nd amendment to be repealed. I dont think it will last long.

The GIT iz an alternativ stratejy - counterbalans the 2nd amendment. Money iz at the hart uv the NRA'z existens, so going after the money will work. All it needz iz publisity.

So, if you are starting to feel a little gilty for not doing anything, post a link to http://www.7532020.com/GUNZ.htm in all your usual hangouts. Tell your frendz about it. mention it in comments for related newz storyz. Kuz if its only me promoting it, we will still be reading about mass shootingz at skoolz in 2030 and beyond.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

It's satisfyingly righteous. People who are truly fed up would get behind it.

So anyway ... anyone up for a rational, fact-based, and civil discussion about the topic?

It wouldn't work J0. I believe you live in Illinois... Cook County even... isn't that right?

I grew up there and lived the first 2/3rds of my life in that area. I thought most of the rest of the country had gun laws like they did there. Not even close. Most states don't even require you to register a firearm, and many that do are so half-assed about it that unless you're going out of your way to register it yourself, chances are there is no record of it. In those cases, all a tax would do is pretty much ensure that nobody goes out of their way to register them if it means they're volunteering for an extra tax they wouldn't be paying otherwise.

I'll tell you one thing though... The citizens of Illinois who are already massively overtaxed in every aspect of their lives would be hit by it. Especially those in Cook and the surrounding counties.

I'd say that chances are, any locality in the country that does emissions tests on cars every 2 years would be the most likely spots where this would work. The large majority of the rest of the country wouldn't pay into this tax.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I lived in Chicago till I wuz 33. Now I'm in Lake.

Good point.

Same with any new law I supoze. Implementation iz rezisted and duznt happen instantly. I will ad sumthing to the paje about unlisenst gunz being impounded until the back taxez are paid. If they arent within a sertain period, they are melted down and a fine iz added to the tax bill.

That woud motivate gun luvrz to rejister their precious babyz and peepl who just happen to own gunz to turn them in for the buy- back money.

Soundz harsh, but its better than kidz getting mowed down at skool, goramit!

Well, that's the rub. There have been more mass shootings in the last 1/3rd of my life than the first 2/3rds and nothing has changed as far as laws go. In fact, didn't it become legal to own a firearm in both Chicago and D.C. after many, many years of it being outright illegal for anyone? During Obama's administration even? If anything, laws concerning gun ownership have become more lax.

For this tax to work, it would have to at least pretend to be fair. That would require forcing everyone in the country to register their firearms (possibly by instituting your suggestions of having them impounded or melted down if found and not registered). But before that even happened, not only would you have to convince the state legislatures of more than half of the country to pass laws requiring firearms to be registered, but you'd also have to enforce them. For instance, in Wisconsin you have to register your firearms when they're purchased at a gun shop, but there is no requirement at any of the extremely numerous gun shows.

Until that happens, all a tax would do is hit people in areas like where you live and nowhere else. As I said before, the opposite of your intentions would happen everywhere else. Less people would register their firearms if it meant that by voluntarily doing so would penalize them with a tax they wouldn't pay if they didn't go out of their way to do it. You'd actually end up with many, many more firearms out there that weren't registered.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I don't know. I want assault riffles gone. I want bumper stocks and large magazines gone. I want them to make some smart changes in the law that helps without denying peoples rights to bear arms.

I have a WCP and still I want these things. I want the NRA crushed as well. At least severely put in it's place.

The NRA shoud be a hole in the ground after Sandy Hook, THGRRI. Unfortunately, Uncle Skam iz not working for its sitizenz, so there it sits - a monument to money in politics in defians uv our safety.

Thats not the way Federal law works, 6string. States dont haf to make their own lawz to impliment a Federal law and they cant make lawz that contradict Federal law.

That's not the way that Federal Law works either. Gun ownership is a states rights issue. I'd imagine if you wanted to make that a federal law it would have to at least pass by a 2/3rds measure, which would never happen. Even Second would agree with that.

And as for states making laws that contradict federal law, they do all the time. Legalization of weed anyone?

At best what you'd get is a Federal Suggestion. States could either abide by this or supersede them with their own laws.

Well, sure it has. I'll fully admit without even hearing your interpretation of it that we both believe it to mean two entirely different things.

All I'm saying to you is that the overall status quo regarding firearms isn't going to change, at least any time soon. Even during the Obama administration the Chicago and DC handgun bans were deemed unconstitutional. I mean... remember when that kid mowed down a bunch of people inside a movie theater during Obama's presidency? Nothing changed.

Every time something like this happens both "sides" argue tooth an claw for a few weeks then everybody moves on to the next big story and nothing gets fixed.

My suggestion is to change the topic of conversation when events like these occur. Apparently, gun control isn't going to happen, at least on any meaningful level.

It's not as if tons of people didn't have access to guns before Columbine. What has changed since then? It's not the amount of guns out there. There's a sickness in our society today. Sure, it doesn't effect all of us and make us all crazy like these shooters, but it effects enough of us to make things a lot more scary than they should be.

We need to get to the root of that problem or we're just sitting here waiting for something terrible like this to happen again. And when it does we're just going to have this stupid debate about gun control that goes nowhere and fixes nothing.

What's the definition of insanity again?

Do Right, Be Right. :)

If the NRA were smart, they would pay the high schools to allow the loonies to use their students as target practice for their experimental guns, and for extra credit: run while they shoot.

Just think, they could eliminate the middle man and not have to pay the politicians. Go right to the source. They could call it "Guns for Hire." Trouble is how to sell it. I know.....pretend that they mean to "protect" innocent lives.

Eureka! I've got it, it's brilliant...Operation Eagle Shield, what a name!

A trained person, male or female, to be strapped to the hilt with the most modern weaponry known to man. Just think, no one would want to mess with an armed guard. Right!? Maybe even several of these people roaming high school and college campuses all across the country. It would solve three problems: school shooters, unemployment and those gun control "nuts."

Shit! that's the best idea I've heard yet. Later fellas, I'm off to write Trump. Surely, I'll get the freedom medal for this brain gem.

Thats only slitely better than armed teacherz.

The common good guy with a gun idea duznt work very well. The bad guy haz the drop on him, so it duznt matter how much better hiz gun iz or that he iz a crack shot.

The dressed up version iz even wors, kuz your armed professional protector roaming the hallz uv the skool just bekumz target #1 for the venjful outcast student.

The teacherz with conseeld weponz version iz the stoopidest. Not only will it endanjer more students during an attack, but it puts a haf million or more gunz in classroomz EVERY DAY. Throwing lethal weponz into the simmering stew uv fed up teacherz and unstable teenajrz will naturally produse a stedy streem uv unfortunate insidents.

Even if the armed teacher plan ended the mass shootingz, the daily wun-off killingz woud vastly outnumber wut the yearly mass shooting totalz were.

There are a lot of bad teachers out there, and none of them have to go through regular psych evaluations to make sure they're fit to teach, let alone run a class with a gun on their hip.

It's bad enough there are armed guards at all the schools now. We don't need teachers with guns too.

I think instead of adding more taxes, we need to do something to make sure the idiots running the show aren't stealing it all or just plain wasting it. I tune out completely when somebody talks about adding a new tax or increasing any type of tax, especially a "sin tax".

Your suggestion isn't exactly a sin tax, but it is based off of the same desire to control people's behavior.

I have not watched the videos. I just read the page.

Once again though, we're talking about a much different resource than cigarettes. Cigarette smokers were easy to target for the following reasons.

1. They were able to grow hatred for them in around 70-75% of the non-smoking electorate by convincing them that they were dying of 2nd hand smoke. Somewhat similar to the fear that mass shootings brings about, but a lot more than 25% of the population owns guns and is pro guns, and you don't die simply because your next door neighbor has one in a lock box.

2. There are already a LOT of guns out there, and they have a very long shelf life. Conversely, cigarettes don't have a shelf life of more than a few years if preserved correctly. When the prices started going up I happend to be making a lot of money and knew I wasn't going to stop any time soon so I bought several years worth of cigarettes at the old prices, so the taxes didn't hit me until about 2 1/2 years later. I could have bought more, but unless I was selling them or smoking twice as much they would have gone bad.

3. People already have the guns. What people don't have is the land or time to farm tobacco on their own. It's prohibitively expensive to grow and cultivate your own tobacco for personal use. If you're a gardener, you know that potatoes are not worth your time or money, considering how cheap they are to buy. Even with the extremely bloated price of cigarettes from taxes, there is no way people are going to start growing their own tobacco.

I don't see how you'd ever even begin to get this done. I understand where you're coming from, but at the end of the day I don't trust our government much more than I trust criminals. Hell... there's over 2 billion people in China, and they're not fans of us, and we owe them a lot of money. I'd rather be in a home that had a gun if they ever start shipping Chinese soldiers by the 10's of thousands to collect that debt one day.

There's got to be a sensible option somewhere in between.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Those that cling the tightest to their guns do it for the very reason you just spoke of. Government is already far too big.

I'm glad the cigarette analogy made you think, but it's hardly the only one.

It's not that it's too big to shutdown. Too many people support guns. Until we evolve as a race to a Vulcan type mind, this will always be the case. Nobody trusts anybody else, and there is absolutely zero reason why anybody should.

I heard some douchebag politician said the other day "It's time we learn to love our children more than we love our guns".

A more divisive statement couldn't have been made. What was he hoping to accomplish by saying that? All it did was 2 things.

1. Pissed off everybody against guns because they say "yeah... anybody who owns a gun doesn't love their kids".

2. Pissed off everybody pro gun because "fuck that government asshole for trying to manipulate me".

There were zero minds changed with that comment. All it did was make people on either side dig their heels in more.
