We want to believe that the Nazis were a special, exceptional kind of evil, because it’s easier for us. But the reality is that their brutality was just another manifestation of humanity’s worst flaws: our fear of the Other, the unthinking cruelty we unleash upon each other as soon as society gives us license. Those flaws are on full display at our southern border today, and we must recognize that if we are to break the cycle.

Like many Ashkenazi Jews, my ancestors came from the far western reaches of Imperial Russia, the region known as the Pale of Settlement. It wasn’t by choice that they settled there: Catherine the Great banished the Jews to that slice of the empire’s frontier after merchants in Moscow complained that their Jewish competitors were stealing away business with their “well-known fraud and lies.” Things got worse in the 1880s with the enactment of the May Laws, which barred Jews from participating in the financial system and doing business on certain days, and capped the percentage of Jewish students allowed in schools.

If that sounds familiar, it’s because Adolf Hitler followed that same playbook in 1935, denying Jews citizenship, barring their access to certain professions and eventually herding them into ghettos. Bit by bit, he transformed us into the Other: corrupting, poisonous, a danger by our very existence.

illegal]invokes the boogeyman of MS-13[/url] to justify the imprisonment of children too young to tie their shoes. It’s there in the stories of detainees who have no idea where Homeland Security has taken their children, and have no way of finding out.

Yes, our government is only rounding up human beings, not executing them or burying them in mass graves. But the roots of that evil are there — they have, to an extent, always been there. Does it need to flower into something truly monstrous before we recognize it for what it really is? Hitler also did things by degrees, nipping away at freedoms and piling one small indignity on top of another. That has been the strategy of the Trump administration: first racial insults, then stepped-up enforcement, then the wall, then the cage.

Yanno, there is only one answer to this conundrum of not aping the very people that you think you're criticizing, and that is to treat EVERYONE with respect, especially those that you disagree with. And on a discussion board, that means being attentive to what someone is posting (If this were a verbal discussion it would be called "active listening" ... making sure that you UNDERSTAND what someone is saying by asking questions to clarify their points) and then responding politely, on-point, and with logical and objective counterpoints. To be pellucidly clear, it doesn't mean trolling, name-calling, strawmanning/ lying, bullying, or any of the other emotion-laden, spittle-spraying tactics that you, GSTRING, THUGR, WISHY AND OTHERS etc employ.

The extent that you - or ANYONE - engages in such tactics is a definitive measure of how little basis you have for your own argument, and how willing you are to dehumanize others to impose your opinion on others.

I'm not a saint when it comes to that, but if I'm subject to that kind of treatment, I WILL eventually respond that way because it becomes clear that people who do that clearly aren't here to discuss, they simply want to browbeat people into submission. And if THAT isn't authoritarian and antidemocratic, I don't know what is.

Make sure that that isn't you and you won't be accused of being "fascistic".

August 2017 - Charlottesville response leads to widespread backlash. Trump rallies in WV and AZ.

March 2018 - Nationwide gun debate, and Trump steps in it by implying that he may actually support gun control. Rallies in PA.

April 2018 - Trump signs omnibus bill, again infuriating the base. Rallies in MI.

June 2018 - "Crying babies" looking terrible politically. Rallies in MN.

In all cases I think there's multiple goals. First, for Trump to get away from the constant negative coverage and get the reaffirmation and adulation he so desperately craves. Second, to shore up any potential cracks in his base, and literally rally them against whatever fire he's currently under.

The only discernible difference between what Donald Trump is doing to undocumented immigrants on our southern border and what the Nazis did all over Europe to Jews is that the Nazis had to go from house to house to round up their victims, while all Trump’s Border Patrol has to do is wait for their victims to walk or swim across the border.

That’s it. Practically everything else is the same. The actions Trump’s Border Enforcement agents are taking when they separate immigrant children at processing centers from their parents have nothing to do with law enforcement. Neither did the Nazis when they separated Jewish children from their parents inside the gates of Buchenwald and Auschwitz and Dachau. Trump’s agents on the border are carrying out a policy promulgated by his administration. Nazi SS stormtroopers were carrying out the policy of rounding up political opponents, “undesirables,” and Jews, and incarcerating them in concentration camps. These camps were entirely extra-legal. You didn’t have to be convicted of a crime to be incarcerated in a concentration camp. Nor have the immigrants and their children being held in hastily constructed cages been convicted of crimes.

The “crime” in Hitler’s Germany and occupied countries was being Jewish. The “crime” committed by the children being rounded up and caged along our southern border is being brown and undocumented.

No one said that the little girl was separated from her mother. All reports said
that the mother was being searched by a border patrol agent, and that her crying
was a result of that encounter.

Let me see if I can explain this to you, so that you understand the picture and
what it stands for....please stop acting dumb. The crux of the picture's impact
is to show how a young child can be affected by such a situation. And please
don't give me that lame-ass bullshit about a migrant parent acting irresponsibly
crossing the border. For one, they are being scammed by HHS and Homeland Security
because they are told that there is no one to process their asylum request.

This country is very quickly turning into Nazi Germany. All the tactics, lies
