Shanghai stocks just had their best day in more than three years after comments from the leaders of China and the United States brought investors piling back into the market.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite (SHCOMP) leaped 5.6% on Monday, its biggest daily percentage gain since July 2015, according to Reuters. That lifted it into a bull market, which is defined as a rise of at least 20% from a recent low.

Some of the encouragement came from US President Donald Trump, who announced that he'll delay a major tariff hike on Chinese exports . . .

The US government was due to hike tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese goods from 10% to 25% on March 2 if the two sides were unable to reach a deal before then. Trump didn't specify what the new deadline for raising tariffs would be . . .

A full-scale U.S.-China trade war appears to be on hold, and may be avoided altogether. The bad news is that if Trump does sign a trade deal with China, it will basically be because the Chinese are offering Trump a personal political payoff. What payoff?

Experts were asked what Trump really wants from his trade deal with China; the most popular answer was “tweetable deliveries.”

Sure enough, Trump has been crowing about what he portrays as big Chinese concessions, which all seem to involve China’s government ordering companies to buy U.S. agricultural products. In particular, the postponement of the trade war came after a Chinese pledge to buy 10 million tons of soybeans. This will please farmers.

What China is offering doesn’t at all get at the real U.S. national interests at stake, other than farming. But it does give Trump something to tweet about.

I do not agree that Lightheizer is the idiot to Trump's genius. I've heard both talk about subjects I have knowledge of. My conclusion is that Trump should be declared mentally incompetent while Lightheizer truly knows about what he speaks. And it's completely stupid for Trump selling out America to China just because the Chinese bought soybeans from farmers that Trump wants to vote for him in 2020.

When the American negotiator is talking with the translator for the Chinese delegation, the American uses China's understanding of MOA, not yours or Trump's. And the bigger picture, beyond your ego, is that you never see Trump, at least if you look only at the numbers, is a big fat failure. Will Robert Lighthizer restrain Donald Trump’s impulse to take a headline-grabbing and self-defeating China deal? On Monday, Trump crowed to a White House gathering of the nation’s governors that “we’re going to have another summit, we’re going to have a signing summit, which is even better, so hopefully we can get that completed, but we’re getting very, very close.” The more Trump trumpets success before true game-changing progress has been agreed to, however, the more he creates pressure for a bad deal, and the more he undercuts his own negotiators.

Ever since China was admitted to the World Trade Organization in 2001, the trade imbalance between the United States and China has become more and more lopsided. In 2001, the deficit stood at $83 billion. In 2017, it reached $375 billion. Rather than moving toward a more open economy, as enthusiasts of WTO membership predicted, China has intensified its policies of state-led capitalism and protectionism. Combined with its outright technology theft, these policies have enabled China to achieve domination in industry after industry, with grave economic and geopolitical consequences for the U.S.

Robert Lighthizer, the U.S. trade representative, aims to change that. He is dead serious about using America’s economic and political leverage to reset the U.S.-China relationship.

There’s only one person who can undermine what Lighthizer is trying to achieve. That would be Donald Trump. Why? Because in the next few days or weeks, Trump is looking for a quick deal that gives him bragging rights, while Lighthizer is playing a long game for systemic change. The president’s predictably failed summit with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, as he comes home to face the aftermath of the Michael Cohen hearings, only increases the pressure for a successful “signing summit” on trade with China’s Xi Jinping.

Should that happen, it will be a stunning defeat for America. To date, says China journalist and scholar James Mann, “Lighthizer has been the driving force in persuading Trump not to take deals that would generate headlines but not alter China’s system.” It will take something close to a miracle for Lighthizer to prevail again this time.

What somebody should have done is made Trump leave the room because clients don't treat their lawyers like that in front the opposite lawyers. Well, Trump does. That is why Trump will lose this negotiation with China. He will declare a victory, but it won't be. China sees who is the weakling (Trump) who knows nothing about how to negotiate, probably because he had a ghost writer for Trump's The Art of the Deal.

“I am a Tariff Man,” said Trump.

He also claimed that foreigners pay the tariffs he has been imposing.

Now, that last claim is something you can test. The results?

Foreigners paid approximately none of the bill.

U.S. companies and consumers paid all of it.

And the losses to U.S. consumers exceeded the revenue from the new tariffs, so the tariffs made America poorer overall.

Over the course of 2018 Trump imposed tariffs on about 12 percent of total U.S. imports, and many of those tariffs have been in effect long enough that we can get a first read on their consequences.

On Saturday economists from Columbia, Princeton, and the New York Federal Reserve released a paper, “The impact of the 2018 trade war on U.S. prices and welfare,” that used detailed import data to assess the tariffs’ impact. (The paper, by the way, is a beautiful piece of work.)

How did they get this result? The U.S. government collects data on the prices and quantities of many categories of imports. Many of these categories faced new tariffs, but many others didn’t. So you can compare what happened to the tariffed imports to the de facto control group of untouched imports; this tells you the impact of the tariffs.

Under Trump’s vision, in which foreigners would have paid the tariffs, what you would have expected to see is falling prices for tariffed goods, offsetting the tariff, so that consumer prices didn’t change. What you actually see, however, is no visible effect of the tariffs on import prices. So foreign suppliers don’t seem to have absorbed any of the tariffs, which were fully passed on to consumers; tariff-inclusive prices (Figure 3, page 28 of the paper) have risen by the full amounts of the tariffs.

By the way, in practice any manufacturing jobs added by the Trump tariffs are probably offset by losses of other manufacturing jobs.

Beyond that, the tariffs have probably contributed to a rising dollar, which makes U.S. exports less competitive.

The Trump administration’s trade war with China has turned out to be a windfall for Mexico.

Mexico has seen gains in shipments to the U.S. in categories in which competing Chinese goods were hit with tariffs. In all, U.S. imports of goods from Mexico surged to almost $350 billion last year, the fastest growth in seven years. That helped widen the U.S. trade deficit with Mexico by 15% to more than $80 billion, while our trade deficit with China increased by only 12%.

Mexico’s gain is evident across a diverse span of sectors. After the U.S. levied tariffs on metal ores and their byproducts, Mexico’s exports to the U.S. more than doubled, while China’s sank by a quarter.

The trade war also made the U.S. more reliant on produce from Mexico, already the biggest source of vegetables such as cauliflower, carrots and onions. In one stark example, imports of peeled garlic cloves from China sank by almost a quarter after receiving tariffs, while Mexican exports rose 54%.

I’m sure that soon Trump will sign a fabulous new deal with China that will make this all seem like peanuts. After all, trade wars are so easy to win—or so I’ve heard.

Trump’s China trade war is (mostly) pro-business

The China trade debate today is different from the one of 10 or 20 years ago, when labor unions were asking for protection against competition with low-wage Chinese labor. The point of getting tough on China, in those days, was to save American jobs from outsourcing by applying tariffs that would raise the cost of Chinese-made goods and thus discourage American companies from relying on Chinese factories for production.

Over the past five years, however, the China argument has shifted subtly.

Today, under Trump, the United States is primarily asking the Chinese government to enact policy changes that will make it easier for American companies to outsource jobs to China. That includes cracking down on Chinese theft of American intellectual property, paring back regulations that force Americans to form joint ventures with Chinese companies in order to do business there, and ending “forced technology transfer” policies that make American companies hand over valuable knowhow in order to gain access to the Chinese market.

It’s true that the tool Trump is using to try to get these concessions — tariffs — is the same as what labor was asking for in the mid-aughts. But the Trump administration’s policy goal isn’t to keep these tariffs in place to protect American jobs. It’s to remove the tariffs in exchange for the Chinese agreeing to make China a friendlier place for American companies to do business.

This agenda has sparked some backlash from the business community — especially from the farm lobby — because it’s bad for Americans who are heavily involved in exporting to China. But big business writ large is comfortable with this form of confronting China because it mostly serves to advance their interests. The fact that this trade war is easily confused for the kind of old-style populist protectionism that they oppose is, to big business, a feature rather than a bug. Trump is mobilizing anti-trade sentiments that corporate America worries about on behalf of an agenda that corporate America mostly supports.

I keep wondering when the trade war disaster is going to happen.

I'm not an ostrich. The US and global economies have been set up for a repeat meltdown because none of the problems of 2008 were fixed. And the current economic system is unsustainable at many levels.

But from the current state of affairs, Trump has been proved right about needing a wall, and not proved wrong in is approach to unsustainable trade practices.

Anyone care to guess a DATE where Trump's trade war becomes a real (as opposed to imaginary - ie 'fake news') disaster? I'll be happy to put it in the predictions thread for you.

It’s almost an axiom of marketing that success has no correlation with the actual quality of the product being sold.

Even Trump is probably smart enough to know that he can’t actually solve any of the problems he campaigned on. But he doesn’t care. He just needs something, anything, that allows him to claim victory.

6ix, lots of insults, but there no sign that you understand what is wrong with Trump's trade war. Mexico and the US agreed on border policies months before Trump’s tariff threat. Trump made the tariff threat for show. After taking the economy hostage, Trump gloated about backing down on Mexican tariffs. Trump was just counting on Mexico surrendering for the greater good, like the real mother in the Judgment of Solomon, rather than see innocent people suffer at the hands of a sociopath.

Yes, 6ix, the Republicans will remain in control of the Federal government by the design of the Founding Fathers, slaveholders Washington, Jefferson and Madison. California’s 40 million people get two senators, while two Senators also represent states like Wyoming (578,000 people), Vermont (626,000 people), and Alaska (737,000 people). The 8 senators from California, Texas, Florida, and New York represented more people than the 68 senators from the smallest 34 states, which includes Indiana. It was a very clever design which has made the Federal government not a Democracy ruled by the majority. 68 Senators is a veto proof number that can do/stop pretty much whatever they please, leaving the majority of Americans out of luck at the Federal level of government.

The closest I every came to Indiana is a month at the Marathon refinery in Canton Ohio. My impression was that the entire state was rusty iron and cracked concrete, but long work days in January didn't leave much time for sightseeing. I think Ohio needed to rebuild their man-made world and do it right this time instead of cheap. Rebuilding would create a lot of jobs and prosperity, but the Republican controlled states won't start until the Federal government provides free money from the larger and more successful economies like California and Texas. I doubt that will happen so long as Republicans are in a position to veto it in the Senate.

Trump recently negotiated a trade deal with Mexico — a deal barely different from NAFTA, which Trump had called the “worst in history”. The whole point of trade deals is that they’re supposed to provide some certainty. The USMCA, like NAFTA, amounts to a promise by all three participants that they won’t arbitrarily impose new barriers to cross-border trade.

Then Trump went ahead and threatened major new tariffs on Mexico, not because it had violated its trade agreements, but because he didn’t like something that was happening on the border, a situation that has nothing to do with trade policy. So the USMCA appears, in practice, to be a solemn promise by the U.S. government not to impose tariffs on Mexican products … unless it feels like it.

And then, after all the dire warnings of what would happen if Mexico didn’t give Trump what he wanted, Trump appears to have backed down in return for a declaration that Mexico will do pretty much exactly what it had already promised to do before the threats: www.nytimes.com/2019/06/08/us/politics/trump-mexico-deal-tariffs.html

Now, the business world is extremely pleased that the trade war appears to have been called off. But it does look as if a Trump threat is worth about as much as a Trump promise: There’s no particular reason to believe that he’ll actually go through with it.

In the case of the Mexican standoff, this may not seem too bad. But think about what it means when foreign leaders know that the President is:

(a) gullible
(b) easily susceptible to flattery and
(c) eager to proclaim victory, and unwilling to admit that he didn’t actually get anything significant.

Basically, this turns America into a systematic chump. Hold a summit, flatter Trump’s vanity, let him issue a communique claiming vast achievement, then go on doing whatever you wanted to do. Just ask North Korea’s Kim, who snookered Trump into thinking he’d made major concessions, went right back to building up his nuclear attack capacity, and still gets praised by Trump as our allies watch in horror.

I keep looking for the trade war disaster that 'Crunchy as a brick' posted about, that presumably happened sometime before Wednesday, July 25, 2018 2:35 PM. Where is it?

Or maybe our champion farter can tell us all when it's supposed to happen in the future rl, instead of in Crunchy's fevered imagination. But despite looking very, very closely for that precious OT prediction, all I find are more farts from the farter ... about everything BUT the actual topic.

How about it, farter? Any predictions when this trade war disaster is supposed to unfold?

And if democrats don't do anything different, how are they any better?
