In Texas, calling Trump a racist is fighting words. It energizes his 2016 voters to declare he's not a racist, they're not racists, and to prove it they would vote him in 2018, but because he is not on the ballot, they will vote the straight GOP ticket. For how that works, see "The polite way to call someone a racist"
www.cnn.com/2018/09/29/us/polite-racism/index.html

The people who don't say the word racism put President Donald Trump in office; they use a term like "racial anxiety" or "racial resentment." If a white politician running for governor warns voters that they may "monkey this up" by electing his black opponent, that's not racist; that's "racially charged." White Americans who are uncomfortable with a changing culture or who believe they're left behind while minority groups get ahead aren't exhibiting racism; that's "racialized economics."

There's a buffet of racial euphemisms that awaits anyone shopping for a more polite word for racism. There's "racially freighted" for venomous anti-immigrant remarks. And white voters who resent demographic changes aren't motivated by racism; they're driven by "ethno-nationalism" or "white nativism."

Why are these racial euphemisms spreading? Do we need them to avoid offending people and to give nuance to a complex topic? Or do they sometimes reinforce racism instead of calling it out?

This language may be new, but it reflects an old social taboo that discourages many Americans from talking directly about race, especially many white progressives, says Robin DiAngelo, author of "White Fragility." The result is that many end up "talking in ridiculous circles" to avoid actually using the words "racist" or "racism."

You clowns are priceless.

I haven't hear any claims that anybody is Russian for the last few days.

The media must have programmed you to use the racism tactic in the week leading up to the election instead, huh?

I'll be sure to tell my Mexican step-dad that you said he was racist when I talk to him on the phone today. But he married a white woman, so you already knew that, didn't you?

Just did.

I was surprised to see as many people in there as there were before me. Figured I'd be the first one.

Donnelly is toast.

.....

Speaking of Donnelly being toast...

Anybody check out the latest polls where RCP got their aggregate for that race?

I wonder if FOX news is trolling with that 7 point lead for Donnelly. CBS only gave him 2 and NBC gives it to Braun with 3 points. Don't know what HarrisX is, but they give Braun 1 point too.

Not enough liquor in the house...

We thought about it. But we also thought about waking up tomorrow and taking it all in in one big gulp - kind of like a giant tetanus shot.

So... dunno!

Lets not forget the governorships that are up for grabs. I think the dems do good there. I think the house falls to the dems and the republicans may pick up some senate seats.

Guam is like Puerto Rico, a commonwealth, a U.S. territory. They too are struggling with the U.S. relationship. They are citizens, Americans, who serve in the military. But they want their independence; one of the main reasons - they are treated like second class citizens on their own island.

Sound familiar?

There is a military base there (I believe it's Naval).

More on Guam........

Herez sumthing to think about:

How likely iz it that Putin shut down hiz wildly seksesful election interferens operation for the mid-termz? Or at least scaled it down to nearly nothing?

Wut if it wuz just much sneekyer? In the interest uv getting away with it, he didnt do anything to call attention to the rezults - just tweeked them in sum key rasez, just enuf to keep hiz puppet in the Oval Ofis.

In other wordz, he coud hav had the GoPs win every rase, completely taken over Congress and all the other offisez that were voted on, but that woud be so obvious that it woud fors action.

Insted, let the Demz take the house, but just enuf to keep from razing suspicion. Sum uv the Guvernorz rasez that were close, tweek them to put the GoP ahed by a small amount.

A solid stratejy.
Its wut I woud do.

Not as bad as you think. Our cyber security guys were tapping their cyber security guys on the shoulders in real time asking, hey guys what ya doing, as they were doing it, scaring the shit out of them causing them shut down.

I think it was the head of homeland security I was watching who said that. Maybe it was the head of the CIA? At any rate, it appears to have worked while showing the Russians that two can play at that game.

Nothing predicts presidential popularity like a strong economy. And yet in November 2018, Trump is less popular at 3.7 percent unemployment than Obama was in November 2010, when unemployment was 9.8 percent. That’s a tremendous political failure, and it should be seen as such.

Trump’s continued political survival is so unlikely that he’s often graded on a steep curve. It’s like watching a dog make pancakes: Who cares if the pancakes are good? When his stratagems work, or simply seem to work, he’s heralded as a genius. When they don’t, he rarely absorbs the blame another politician would face.

Imagine the election had gone another way. Imagine Trump’s hyping of the migrant caravan had succeeded, and Republicans had outperformed expectations. Trump would be heralded as a mastermind, and fearmongering on immigration would be the path forward for Republicans.

The opposite judgment should land with just as much force. Trump’s decision to use immigrants to scare Americans rather than touting the economy to unite them lost the House. His effort to keep the country in a constant state of agitation and his critics in a constant state of mobilization has lost the House. Republicans, rather than reaping the rewards of a booming economy, are facing a blistering electoral repudiation. The only reasons their losses are contained is that gerrymandering and geography have tilted the map in their favor.

Republicans are paying the Trump tax — the penalty Republicans appear to be paying for nominating Donald Trump. Republicans lost the House, and if Democrats hadn’t been defending 26 Senate seats to Republicans’ nine, it’s likely they would’ve seen a rout in the Senate too.

Had Trump been a different man – less self-consumed, less needy – he might have hedged his bets as the midterms neared and not have made the election about himself. He got the attention he craved and will pay the political price. His life is about to get more difficult.

Russia is unhappy the Democrats won the House. The 2018 US midterm election results are in — and Russia feels like it lost.

The Kremlin is unhappy that Democrats won the House. That makes sense, as Democrats have promised greater oversight of President Donald Trump’s foreign policy, and especially his warmth toward Moscow. That, Russia fears, could imperil efforts to improve ties.

“It’s fair to suggest with a high degree of confidence there are no glowing prospects in terms of normalization of US-Russian relations on the horizon,” Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, said on Wednesday about the election results. However, he added, both countries will continue to talk, and discuss security issues like arms control.

Dems flipped 27 House seats and 7 governorships. They'll run the committees now.

Democracy still has a fighting chance.

Donnelly's unsurprising loss can be attributed to several things. Massive dark money spent against him in the last few days, and an organized, statewide anti-abortion evangelical campaign that was huge but didn't get much attention, complete with politics preached from the pulpit.

He was his worst enemy, though. His shit campaign ads had him calling for the wall, and ridiculing the far left. If you didn't know he was a Democrat, you'd think he was a Republican, both by his campaign and his voting record.

Hey, Joe, here's a little newsflash for ya: Republicans always vote straight red. You could be more Republican than the Republican, and they still won't vote for you.

There is no middle, Joe.

Who got the biggest wins? Real progressives who proudly campaigned as real progressives.

The Democrats’ House win could be good for Trump. When all of his policies go wrong, he has someone to blame. For a president who is good at narrative-building and blame-shifting — two practices at which Trump excels — facing an opposition party that holds a modicum of power can actually make the president more popular. His agenda might encounter more difficulty than before, but now there is always someone else who the president can blame.

That's what they say. Still, Obama lost 1000 democratic seats across the country in 8 years. Trump gave a third of those back, three hundred and thirty three seats, in his first two years of service. The republicans got destroyed. I'm quoting an article below from December 2017.

Thanks Trump and by the way tick tock

Nobody is worried about the GOP losing the house. This is an extremely common event you're celebrating here and was expected by anybody but JSF and anybody else who watches Hannity every day.

Again I'll note that this time it made history however since they actually gained power in the Senate while losing the house.

At the end of the day, I'm happy that it happened. I've always said that the country is better off when our government is too busy fighting each other to get anything done.

Though I am human and admit that my primal urges would have enjoyed rubbing your smug face in it if they lost the house, I'm over that now and maintain my belief that we're all better off after the mid-terms went the way they pretty much always do.

Forget the Sweet Talk -- Both Parties Will Go to the Mat

www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2018/11/10/forget_the_sweet_talk_--
_both_parties_will_go_to_the_mat_138614.html

Both parties are already on war footing, and, barring divine intervention, they will remain that way until 2020. Democrats spent the years since the 2016 election doing what parties that lose do — recruiting a different crop of candidates, opening themselves up to some new activists and internal turmoil, and changing their messaging focus (2018 ads were all about health care, none about Trump being mean).

Trump, meanwhile, spent two years acting as if winning 46 percent of the vote was the greatest achievement in the history of American politics, when in reality, Mitt Romney and John Kerry did better than that. He also broke his promise to divest from his business interests, broke his promise to promulgate a health care plan that would cover everybody, and went wildly over the top in breaking his promise to lay off the tweets and behave in a more presidential manner.

Through it all, the press would stop from time to time to remark on how attuned Trump was to his base, and how perfect he was at picking various fights — with Canada, with immigrants, with the FBI — that played to his base’s sensibilities.

Trump is perfectly attuned to his base. (Though, again, wet-noodle Romney got more than Trump’s 46 percent of the vote.) But it was also somewhat bizarre. Winning the presidency while losing the popular vote 46-48 is within the rules of the game, but it left Trump with a negative margin of error. The math was plain as day that all Democrats had to do was consolidate the people who didn’t like Trump and they’d blow the Republicans out.

But the House GOP seemed confident that their gerrymanders would hold. And then when polling in September and October suggested clearly that it wouldn’t, Trump started ranting about the caravan. The political goal here, we were told, was to rally Trump’s base to come back home, which more or less happened. Except 46 percent of the population just isn’t that many people.

Trump’s advantage is that while his base is not a majority of the country, it is very homogeneous. Almost 90 percent of Trump voters were white, and more than 70 percent had no college degree. That means some very basic appeals to white working-class identity politics plus the promise of anti-abortion judges for college-educated evangelicals hold the base together.

Clinton’s coalition, by contrast, was about one-third white professionals and about one-third working-class minorities (themselves split between black and Latino voters). About a quarter were working-class whites, joined by a smaller, but influential, group of college-educated nonwhites. Holding this group together is objectively difficult.

Charisma — the X-factor that put JFK, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama in the White House — is a traditional part of the Democrat’s formula. But so is fear. Clinton was handicapped in 2016 not only by her lack of charisma but by the basic reality that everyone thought she would win, nobody felt the fear, so some 5.6% of voters felt safe enough voting for 3rd party Jill Stein of the Green Party, Gary Johnson the Libertarian, despite them having a 0.0% chance of winning.

By 2018, everyone knew better. And if they feel the same in 2020, Trump is doomed.

I'm good man. I have been for a while now.

You're one of the goons screaming about everything here. "I'm so happy" you said about more Democrats winning. Well, the ball is in your court friend. Are they going to make your dreams come true, or are you at least going to stop bitching and moaning and calling everybody names now? Or is it just two more years of you being a static character?

Do Right, Be Right. :)

The gerrymanding did hold as both the Dakotas went red. There should have been two big blue spots on South Dakota but because of the Republicans denying Native Americans their right to vote there isn't.

It's sad Brenda but even sadder is our local trolls denying the truth of it all.

Sorry Brenda. The Dakotas are always red.

North Dakota:

Quote:

North Dakota joined the Union in November 1889 and has participated in all elections from 1892 onwards. Since 1900, North Dakota voted Democratic 17.24 percent of the time and Republican 82.76 percent of the time. Since 1968, the state has always voted Republican.

South Dakota:

Quote:

South Dakota is reliably Republican in presidential elections – only voting Democratic four times, most recently in 1964 when Lyndon Johnson won a landslide victory over Barry Goldwater. South Dakota is one of seven states with the minimum three electoral votes.
