My prediction is that we don't have to wait until Monday for the answer. I don't believe it's going to go to the Senate. - SIX
The Committee GOP leadership wouldn't take a vote unless they were pretty sure that the votes were secured.

There's one thing that I think all (or nearly all) GOP Senators are on-board with, and that's the importance of getting a conservative Justice appointed. I'm trying to understand how they see their options

1) Hold a Senate vote next week. Unless they've counted their votes carefully, it could be a risky proposition. If they have the vote, they get their nominee on the Supreme Court, altho they might lose a few Senators in the process. Perhaps they've made that calculation and found an acceptable loss. However, if the vote FAILS, then all hell breaks loose for them: Not only do they not get the nomination but they have to start the process all over again ... certain not to be completed before November.

2) Toss this nominee overboard. But this winds up with the same calculus as not getting the vote next week- or even by November- with absolutely no chance of "success". This is not an option.

3) Request an FBI investigation. As I understand it, the FBI would basically interview additional people ... or perhaps even the same people that they interviewed earlier when they did their background checks ... and provide their reports with no conclusion about "guilt" or "innocence" (I don't know if they weigh in on credibility) to the DOJ, WH and from there to the Senate Committee. The Committee members would have to read the reports ("302s") and if there were outstanding questions they would still have to hold additional hearings and take additional testimony and they would STILL have to decide who to believe ... it's not up to the FBI to constantly recycle the "investigation" process because the Senate Committee can't do its job of holding hearings and gathering information and reaching a conclusion.

The Committee seems anxious to avoid interviewing Judge. Likely there's a lot to be learned about HIM, which may not be relevant to Kavanaugh but certain to taint Kavanaugh's nomination.

It would be interesting to read the (six) background checks that Kavanaugh has been through to see if they address the time, behavior, and friends of his earlier life, but we will never be privy to that information.

*****

FWIW, as I hear bits and pieces about the testimony, I gather that the prep school system is awash in alcohol, with hidden, unreported underage binge drinking going on for some girls as well as some boys. That is the privilege of being privileged white youth (Please don't think that Ford was any less privileged than Kavanaugh; after all SHE was going to Holton Arms Academy, a private "high school" where the current tuition is $30,000/ year.)

It sounds, overall, like a toxic atmosphere of privilege and license. You could be as good ... or as bad ... as your inclinations led. I speculate that Kavanaugh was "good" most of the time, which is why so many people from that time support him. But on occasion he drank too much, altho not habitually (otherwise he wouldn't have widespread support from the people who knew him). He might have been in the company of someone who drank ... a LOT ... possibly Judge. I can IMAGINE Kavanaugh being caught up in some of Judge's excesses... something the Committee seems intent on avoiding learning about.

Judge seems to be determined not to get in the way of Kavanaugh's approval, which is why he's hiding out. He has his sworn statement ("I don't recall") but seems anxious not to be questioned about that, or other possible incidents in his own history or Kavanaugh's.

I wonder what the yearbook says about Mark Judge?

I guess my suppositions about Judge were pretty correct .. he admits a history of binge drinking and (later) alcoholism.

Quote:

What the man accused of being part of Kavanaugh’s alleged sexual assault had to say about women’s sexuality

In two memoirs, Judge depicted his high school as a nest of debauchery where students attended “masturbation class,” “lusted after girls” from nearby Catholic schools and drank themselves into stupors at parties. He has since renounced that lifestyle and refashioned himself as a conservative moralist — albeit one who has written about “the wonderful beauty of uncontrollable male passion.”

... Judge never wrote about any sexual violence at those parties, nor did he mention Kavanaugh attending any. But Judge’s 1997 memoir, “Wasted,” references a “Bart O’Kavanaugh” character who passes out drunk and throws up in a car.

17/what-the-man-accused-of-helping-kavanaugh-assault-a-woman-wrote-about-female-sexuality/?utm_term=.be71c5242dbc

However, "lusting after" girls and masturbating are usually done without actual girls being present. So he hasn't admitted to any sort of sexual assault after-the-fact.

I was changing my mind about Kavanaugh ... not on the basis of the allegations, but on the basis of his response to the prospect of an FBI investigation. At one point (the point where I was listening) he said that he would do whatever the Committee wanted him to do, and then after that evaded the question.

I got the feeling that there was something hinky going on. It might have been about "guilt " or "innocence" but it also might have been about something political going on in the background. I felt that Kavanaugh might have been answering that question as directed by the Committee GOP, which is why his answers on that point seemed so inauthentic.

I couldn't see the political "down side" to an FBI investigation until now ...

According to the GOP. the Dems on the Committee REFUSED TO BE PART OF THE INITIAL INVESTIGATION, when the Committee was getting affidavits and information from various witnesses, because they had ALREADY decided that none of them were voting for Kavanaugh. But the last-minute allegations coming from left field (so to speak) were part of a Dem delaying tactic, and additional hearings and investigations are simply part of additional delaying tactic by the Dems ... not because it will change any of their votes or unearth any additional information, and not even because it will change the final outcome, but to KEEP THIS ISSUE BEFORE THE VOTERS FOR AS LONG AS POSSIBLE BEFORE THE MIDTERMS.

RUSSIA!! RUSSIA!! RUSSIA!! didn't work. MOST people believe that it irrelevant to ... well ... anything, and the longer it's flogged (with no results) the less credible it becomes.

FURTHERMORE, the House and Senate want to make some revelations of their own, right before the midterms, particularly about the crooked basis of the RUSSIA!! RUSSIA!! RUSSIA!! investigation, and they don't want the Kavanaugh hearings/vote occupying the news cycle.

I think I get it now.

Yep. She's said Russia! more than anyone else on this forum lately. I'm sure Mueller has barely looked up.

Fwiw: this was never about finding out what actually happened - obviously. Frankly, I'm not sure, other than for optics, why they let Ford even speak. That back fired optics-wise, but as in all things about this none of that other stuff like optics and The Truth really mattered: the fix and the math was always going to win. Rudy should have said: "There are many Truths."

I have little doubt he did what she says he did. 98%-99%? More glaring than that was his display of lack of cool under pressure and the lying about even small things and simple childishness at his age, "oh yeah, but what about you?!? Do you like beer? I bet you do!" He proved to me that he does not have the character to be one of the top judges in the US.

But, none of that matters - math.

Flake's such a wuss. He wants it both ways.

People have said "This is an interview, not a criminal trial".

True enough.

I recall having to do a "background check" on someone that we were considering hiring. He had actually worked as a temporary in our lab ... not for me, but as a "floater" for two other groups.

So I did my due diligence and I asked one lady in one group who said "I think he fudged his numbers. I think he said that he cleaned and blanked sampling cans when he didn't."

Whoa, that's pretty serious! So I asked another person in another group what they thought and SHE said He said he ran a bunch of samples on the ion chromatograph but he didn't because I can't find the data anywhere.

Well! I told the manager what I;d find out ... I was ready to trash-can the guy ... fortunately he was a lot more "up" on what was going on in the other groups. He told the applicant what was said about him, and the applicant basically said I was running around with my hair on fire, trying to fill in for the other can-blanker who got fired and run the other instrument at the same time. THIS is the work that I did with the cans, and HERE is the data from the ion chromatograph.

It turns out that these two women (both Asians, and friends) had just taken a grotch against this (white male) guy for whatever reason and decided to torpedo his application. It's a good thing that manager followed up because this guy became one of our most productive and dedicated staff, and wound up getting promoted, twice.

And then there was this other guy, who was railroaded by the same Asian-lady gang. Yeah, this guy was sarcastic, and yes, he was kind of tough to take, but he did NOT touch women. Still, none of the evidence that was provided in his support was enough to overcome this rather calculated effort on their part, and so he was unjustly punished.

In the morning, the Republican senators used an outside prosecutor to try to pick apart Christine Blasey Ford’s credibility live on national television. They refused to subpoena Mark Judge, the key witness, or launch the FBI investigation Ford asked for. And after hearing her testimony, and judging it credible, they simply ignored it.

In the afternoon, those same senators feted Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, the man Ford accused of attacking her. They cut off the prosecutor they hired in order to give speech after speech lamenting the way he and his family have suffered. They said they didn’t question that Ford’s assault was real, but perhaps her memory was flawed; whoever had assaulted her, could she really be trusted to say it was Kavanaugh?

Ford’s testimony was — by wide acclaim — powerful, specific, and gutting. She was a friendly witness, trying to answer questions, asking repeatedly for an investigation to help clear the holes in her own memory, thanking the committee for the consideration they gave her. Her expertise as a professor of clinical psychology kept shining through as she offered clear, powerful explanations of how trauma worked on the brain, how it had worked on her brain.

Even Fox News was impressed. “This is a disaster for the Republicans,” said Fox News’s Chris Wallace.

And then it was Kavanaugh’s turn.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican, delivered an unforgettable performance. He was silent during Ford’s testimony, freely yielding his time to prosecutor Rachel Mitchell. During Kavanaugh’s testimony, however, Graham buoyed the witness and ripped into the Democrats. “This is hell,” he told Kavanaugh. The hearings were “the most unethical sham” he’d seen in his decades-long political career.

“To my Republican colleagues,” Graham spat, “if you vote no, you’re legitimizing the most despicable thing I have seen in my time in politics.” He meant that the "despicable thing" was Ford's testimony.

Spoken like a true asshole, SECOND. What does my skepticism of Blasey's accuracy have to do with forging on ahead even if her allegations are demonstrated to be proven true? As usual, you're a jerk.

I've already said that I believe that SHE believes she's telling the truth. I will credit her with complete sincerity. I've also said that fragmentary memories are difficult to recover without warping them in some way (see "false memory"); it's not her sincerity that I doubt, it's her accuracy. Therefore her recollections must be CORROBORATED in some way. What I don't see is the corroboration. If you can manage to set your assholeness aside for a moment, maybe we can focus on facts.

That's because they're pandering to the #metoo movement.

I've seen women being victimized, and as a woman in a traditionally male field Ive had to be twice a good, AND been a victim of unremitting sexual harassment by a particular asshole and his enabling friend who tried to get me fired.

But I've seen (straight white) men victimized too. I don't mean that I've thought about how it "could" happen, I've SEEN it ... been involved in investigations of it ... regarding people who worked for me.

If you think it doesn't happen ... that only women and/or nonwhites and/or LGBTQ can be victims, then I have a suggestion for you: Have you ever thought of running as a Democrat? Because you're certainly biased enough to be one.

And since the president, republican party and Kavanaugh as well denied the accusers an investigation there was no reason to believe anything but that Dr. Ford was telling the truth. How'd you like to walk into a courtroom and see this guy is going to sit in judgement of you or a loved one. He actually threatened senators with payback as he testified. What comes around goes around he said.

Okay, let me tell you a little bit about two of the women. One of them at one point told our (Hispanic) technician that she (Asian) needed to check the tech's calculations because "our people are better at math".
Seriously.
Well, THAT merited a complaint to HR!

Another one was going thru a nasty divorce with her husband, who apparently wanted a younger model, and she was just pissed at men in general.

The two of them got together and not only did they file completely meritless complaints against the two (white hetero) males that I previously mentioned, one of them... the one with the "racially superior" math skills filed a discrimination lawsuit which was dismissed the moment it got to court.

Huh? He was a white hetero male.

I have no idea where you're coming from, except that you seem to have some extremely rigid expectations about people. Do you think that Asian women CAN'T be aggressors because they're Asian? Women? People come in all kinds of flavors no matter what gender, race, age, or religion. I've seen a lot of different behavior from all kinds of people; after a while you just realize that they're all individuals.

Would you buy a used car from this man?

He let Trump write his speech and then totally challenged the Dems in the hall. Talk about your Scumbags (with a capital S). This guy is so close to
Trump it's not funny. He showed his true colors, and now Dr. Ford's allegations are not so far-fetched. The arrogant prick.

Here's the good thing or, what you might call, the silver lining of all this.
The good people are waking up and fighting back, and let's face it there are
more of us than there are of them. Democracy, real democracy is alive and
well....we're coming. Enough bullshit, we're coming!

I watched practically the entire hearing, so the chart seems about right.

I thought that the judge's opening statement was an utter disgrace for a Supreme Court nominee. Challenging and accusatory in every sense of the
word. Imagine talking that way to your potential employer; this is not the
way to get to SCOTUS.

Yes, Jeff Blake got cornered by a pair of women that laid into him and
read him the "riot act" about the message being sent to millions of women
across the country.

Democracy in action. They confronted him and spoke plainly and passionately,
convincing him that due diligence was called for, but that women's votes
matter. In the final analysis, he saw the logic in their request (and partially because he's retiring), reached out across the aisle to his friend
Senator Coons (and Klobuchar) and reached an agreement.

This was actually normal procedure way back about 20 years ago (roughly).
About the same time that the ugly right or Tea Party became a thing. How
refreshing to see the return of bipartisan politics...for the good of the
country.

Sorry Sigs, but you're on your own here. I don't have the time, energy or the desire to devote to the mob on the other side of this #MeToo movement. I'd say that you're the voice of reason here, but then again, simply partaking in this argument against a group of staunch illiberal, regressive, inter-sectional Leftists is a fight you're never going to win in a million years.

One way or another, they're going to lose this issue. At the very least, they're not going to get what they want.

I'm just going to sit this one out and let time take care of things.

The Kavanaugh affair has produced millions of words of comment. At this point, it’s a purely partisan fight.

I think pretty much everyone — Democrat and Republican alike — does know the truth of what happened: Christine Blasey Ford has no reason to make anything up. It’s also true that it happened 35 years ago, when Brett Kavanaugh was 17 years old. In a normal universe, Kavanaugh would have acknowledged what happened, apologized sincerely, and attributed it to “sort of a wild youth.”

And that would have been the end of it.

The vast majority of the country would have figured that, in the end, nothing serious happened and we shouldn’t blacklist people for stupid teenage activity that happened long in the past.

So why didn’t it happen that way? The main reason is that in Trumpland you don’t explain past problems. You simply deny them. That’s what Roy Moore did, despite the masses of evidence against him. That’s what Trump himself does, even if there’s literally video evidence showing he’s wrong. And so that’s what Kavanaugh did. He just denied anything happened, full stop.

Did he do that because it’s his natural instinct? Or because that’s the advice he got from the Trump team? Maybe Bob Woodward will tell us someday, but until then we don’t know. All we know is that this is the path he chose.

I don't see many posters talking about Me Too. #MeToo is certainly a part of this, but that's not what I'm most concerned with (because unfortunately you can't go back and charge "Brettski" with attempted rape). It's a "who do we want on the Supreme Court," movement. The fact that male contempt and disrespect for women is such a big part of it is telling and sickening. We should be so much further along as a society. Get those old f*ckers off the stage! Term limits!

I wasn't silent. I was very clear when I said that given the high political stakes here and the fact that the illiberal, regressive Leftitst have made crying Rape one of their go-to moves along with calling everyone a Nazi, I would have been more surprised if he wasn't accused of rape than I am that he was.

Me saying that that this is a false accusation is not broad, nor is it sweeping. It's a very targeted accusation on my part. And as far as "how do I know?"

Let me put it this way. I have just as much evidence that she threw out a false accusation as she has backing up her accusation.
