The 2006 film Idiocracy borrows from "The Marching Morons" the idea of the world population becoming moronic through the stupid breeding more, but it does not have genocide or a super-clever elite. It was included in The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Volume Two after being voted one of the best novellas up to 1965.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Marching_Morons

"The Marching Morons" dates back to 1951 and imagined the peak world population was only 5 billion. The elite have tried everything rational to solve the population problem but the problem cannot be solved rationally. The solution requires a way of thinking that no longer exists – Barlow's "vicious self-interest" and his knowledge of ancient history, particularly the Holocaust. Barlow derives a solution based on his experience in scamming people into buying worthless land and knowledge of lemmings' mass migration into the sea: convince the morons to travel to Venus in spaceships that will kill their passengers. Apparently the author of "The Marching Morons" didn't think natural extinction was fast enough.

lol. Too true.

But my point is make it known over the next 25 years that benefits would be half. Make it part of sex education. Drill it into their heads when they're kids that the free ride is coming to an end. Then drill it into their kids that there will be no help for them if they have kids.

I believe rewarding people for having kids has to end, but you can't just switch that off overnight or you'd have riots on the streets, literally.

This isn't just for people close to poverty, either...

In the same timeframe, completely cut any tax benefits that married middle class and rich people get for their kids. (No dependents, only a single standard deduction per worker).

Also, lower homeowner's property taxes who don't have kids, while raising property taxes for people who do have kids and are the ones benefiting from the school system.

Well... once again, I think this is a problem that is a problem because nobody ever talks about it. The people that run the show, at least until recently, seemed to want more and more people every year, fueling the commerce. How many suckers are born every minute?

According to google, 250 of them. (360,000 people born every day).

Ask yourself why aren't any of the Democrat politicians once ever talking about population being a problem when they talk about saving the environment? It's obvious why the Republican politicians don't since they just flat out deny there is an environment problem.

It seems like everyone on this board is smart enough to realize that overpopulation is a problem, no matter what their political leanings are.

Well... yeah. I'm pretty sure you're never going to have an actual perpetual motion machine. You'd seriously blow my mind if you were able to manage that. (Not to mention that somebody from Big Oil and/or Commonwealth Edison would probably suicide you before it ever saw the light of day)

I was thinking more along the lines of a near frictionless device that could amplify the power that we could already harness with the sun. Once you got that, we could hook some batteries up to it and have it run all the time even when the sun's not out.

BTW, immigrants have a lot more children than natives. It's a common fact in every developed nation, including in the EU: Advance nations (like Japan, the nations in the EU, and the USA) are birthing at less than replacement rate. Without immigration, populations in these nations would fall, which is a good thing. Right?

The difference has to do with lifestyle and education. I haven't followed up on this, but I've heard of two trains of thought about this "demographic transition"

1) The cause is urbanization: Children no longer represent help on the farm and security in old age, but a ginormous economic drain on the parents; they are essentially a resource-suck (must be fed, housed, and schooled with no ROI) until they fly the coop, which is getting later and later these days or .... This demographic transition, in some studies, occurs reliably within three generations of urbanization. One of my child-minders herself had six children, HER mom (in Mexico) had 13. My grandmother - who grew up on a farm - had eight children (four were birth-children, four were step-children); only five grew to adulthood. THOSE children (my parent's generation) had one, two, or three children; and THOSE children (my generation) mostly had no children, or one or (in one case) two.

2) Educating women. In some studies, even rural women have fewer children once they get some sort of education.

In any case, the problem in the developed nations has nothing to do with birth numbers, and everything to do with lifestyle. The USA is an egregious example: We represent less than 5% of the world's population, but something like 25% of the world's CO2 emissions. And the other 25% of the world's CO2 emissions from China? A lot of that is emitted making doodads and junk for the USA market. We have an EXTREMELY wasteful lifestyle; our outsized energy costs center on the military and transportation, but EVERY sector is an outsized problem. But this doesn't mean that EVERYONE in the USA needs a reduction is lifestyle! Hell, a lot of people in LA are living under bridges and sidewalks! The problem is SYSTEMIC as well as individual.

In any case, no matter what triggers fewer children, women must have access to birth control. In some nations, women don't even have access to sanitary supplies, much less birth control. It's not a problem of being "stupid" it's a problem of being uneducated and/or with few other options besides baby-making.

About half of the world’s ecosystems are being encroached on and altered by human activities and farming and cities are the main drivers. Forests are being cut down at an unsustainable rate, 12% of all land has been converted to farming, which destroys ecosystems, residential and industrial areas expand and land not being farmed is affected by air and water pollution from industrial chemicals.

This conversion of land dramatically intensified during the so-called Green Revolution of the 1950s, when agriculture turned to industrial fertilisers, irrigation and intensive farming with the aim of growing enough food for rapidly expanding populations.

https://mg.co.za/article/2019-02-12-were-causing-an-insect-apocalypse

Industrialized agriculture. Acres and acres plowed flat to allow highly mechanized operations, drenched multiple times a year with weedkillers, pesticides, plant hormones etc ... and not a ditch, windbreak, or hedgerow to provide shelter. Weedkiller sprayed with abandon on road margins and highway medians. Meanwhile those most heavily-exposed to Roundup (glyphosate, the companion to glyphosate-resistant GMO crops used to chemically-weed fields) have a 41% increase in non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Truly, we are digging our demise with convenience and "efficiency".

Look at all those lawns in the cities. How about we start urban farming? Yanno, get the kids to start hand-weeding that vegetable patch and become familiar with actual work?

Nothing I disagree with there, Sig. Even if the world population stopped increasing today, the rest uv the world iz rapidly catching up to our American standard uv living. Even if everybody stopped wasting so much food and doing so much damaj, thered still be too many uv us.

Most likely, there will be 1 or more dizasterz that wipe out the majority uv us. And that woud be the lucky future!

With todayz population density and rapid global mobility, a flu pandemic coud make the WW1 'Spanish' flu seem like just a preview.

Meanwhile, I have planted every bug-friendly drought-tolerant native plant that I can get a hold of in my front yard. It's a huge effort, taking into account the hand-weeding required to eliminate the non-native weeds. I'm rewarded by seeing bugs and birds of all types in my yard (altho I do try to get rid of sider mites) and there are a lot of bug-droppings on my windshiled, but my neighbors think I'm nuts,

The story "The Marching Morons" is here:
www.gutenberg.org/files/51233/51233-h/51233-h.htm

There is this conversation about marching in The Marching Morons:

"I see. Like the marching Chinese!"

"Who the devil are they?"

"It was a —uh— paradox of my time. Somebody figured out that if all the Chinese in the world were to line up four abreast, I think it was, and start marching past a given point, they'd never stop because of the babies that would be born and grow up before they passed the point."

The story continues on about how a clever salesman named Barlow, but it could be Trump, can trick people into marching mindlessly, but happy!, to their own deaths. I think the point of the story was that these people didn't have to die, but they did need to pay much closer attention to the fine print in the contracts they agree to sign. If they won't, they die. (I know plenty of Texans who didn't pay sufficient attention to the details of their lives and they ended up dead sooner rather than later. Even sadder is when billions all over the world are that inattentive and can't even imagine what they need to do different than they've done without thinking all their lives. "America needs to burn more coal. There is no such thing as global warming. See, it is snowing. Besides, the end of life can't be stopped so why not burn all the coal? It's cheaper than green energy!" - Trump, the super-salesman)

That seems to be a cop out to me. Say what you want about AOC and some of the stupid stuff she says, but I've defended her quite a bit recently IRL because she's the only politician getting any airtime that has said a LOT of stuff that I say about the working class being screwed. She's got courage.

What you're saying is that they're just whoring themselves out for votes at the cost of the future of the human race.

NOBODY talks about this. The closest we get to it are a constant barrage of movies and TV shows about the apocalypse that seems to do nothing but serve to further desensitize us to the problem as a group.

The Joss Whedon script for Serenity, where Wash lives, is Serenity-190pages.pdf at https://www.mediafire.com/folder/1uwh75oa407q8/Firefly

David Attenborough, the mellifluous voice of the BBC’s “Planet Earth” and now an environmental conscience for the English-speaking world, put it bleakly: “If we don’t take action,” he said, “the collapse of our civilizations and the extinction of much of the natural world is on the horizon.”

Panic might seem counterproductive, but we’re at a point where alarmism and catastrophic thinking are valuable.

Climate change is a crisis precisely because it is a looming catastrophe that demands an aggressive global response, now. To stay safely below the two degrees Celsius threshold, we must reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45 percent from 2010 levels by 2030, according to the United Nations report. Instead, they are still rising. So being alarmed is not a sign of being hysterical; when it comes to climate change, being alarmed is what the facts demand. Perhaps the only logical response.

Complacency remains a much bigger political problem than fatalism. In December, a national survey tracking Americans’ attitudes toward climate change found that 73 percent said global warming was happening, the highest percentage since the question began being asked in 2008. But a majority of Americans were unwilling to spend even $10 a month to address global warming; most drew the line at $1 a month, according to a poll conducted the previous month.

Voters in Washington, a green state in a blue-wave election, rejected even a modest carbon-tax plan. Are those people unwilling to pay that money because they think the game is over or because they don’t think it’s necessary yet?

This is a rhetorical question. If we had started global decarbonization in 2000, according to the Global Carbon Project, we would have had to cut emissions by only about 2 percent per year to stay safely under two degrees of warming. Did we fail to act then because we thought it was all over already or because we didn’t yet consider warming an urgent enough problem to take action against?

$10 per month is trivial to you.

$10 per month is 1% of my take home pay and a much larger percentage of my disposable income after the bills are paid. Most people that make what I do don't have any disposable income.

I'm willing to pay that. But I would need to be convinced it wasn't just going into some rich asshole's pocket.

Are we on the road to civilisation collapse?
http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20190218-are-we-on-the-road-to-civilis
ation-collapse

"Great civilisations are not murdered. Instead, they take their own lives.

So concluded the historian Arnold Toynbee in his 12-volume magnum opus A Study of History. It was an exploration of the rise and fall of 28 different civilisations.

He was right in some respects: civilisations are often responsible for their own decline. However, their self-destruction is usually assisted.

The Roman Empire, for example, was the victim of many ills including overexpansion, climatic change, environmental degradation and poor leadership. But it was also brought to its knees when Rome was sacked by the Visigoths in 410 and the Vandals in 455.

Collapse is often quick and greatness provides no immunity. The Roman Empire covered 4.4 million sq km (1.9 million sq miles) in 390. Five years later, it had plummeted to 2 million sq km (770,000 sq miles). By 476, the empire’s reach was zero.

Our deep past is marked by recurring failure. As part of my research at the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk at the University of Cambridge, I am attempting to find out why collapse occurs through a historical autopsy. What can the rise and fall of historic civilisations tell us about our own? What are the forces that precipitate or delay a collapse? And do we see similar patterns today?"

IMO, society will collapse worldwide, followed by all kinds of pain and suffering, then the last human on earth will die. 100 years, probably less.

A very small number of species will survive, and live into whatever comes after the extinction of the Anthropocene.

The Social Security Administration has made optimistic estimations of life expectancy all the way to the year 2100.

Because of an outbreak of cynicism in the USA, maybe the S.S.A. needs to revise the estimates to show a higher death-rate in the year 2099?

Figure 1 shows historic and projected total male and female age-adjusted central death rates per 100,000 population.

There have been massive death in the Americas in the past. It could happen again and the Social Security Administration would be both surprised and saddened by the mountains of corpses.

Money means nothing without a functioning society.

That collapse will happen first. Then, nature really takes its course.

I think some people fantasize that they'll somehow survive it, but the planet won't allow it. Pretty much everything's going to die. Few organisms will survive, and we won't be among the ones that do.

This is the 6th extinction, followed by the 6th reset. No dinosaurs, no people. Other things will evolve to take our places over billions of years. We are insignificant lifeforms on a tiny planet in an uncaring universe.

Republicans are dead -- brain dead, but I'm not dead until I run out of airspeed, altitude, and ideas, all at the same time. (That is a grim joke in the face of death that Wash and airline pilots make.)

A serious plan about climate change — really serious — can demand only a teeny-tiny sacrifice from people. Maybe none, in fact, because they are just passengers, not the airline pilot. You will never get widespread support for any plan that requires people to give up stuff.

The “problem” is not climate change and never has been. The problem is how to get public support to do something about climate change. That’s what you need to pour all your energy into. Here’s a four-step plan:

1) Lots and lots of subsidies for renewable energy, energy efficiency, electrification, etc.

2) Huge sums of money for R&D into renewable energy and carbon sequestration.

3) A strong focus on job creation.

4) A whopping big carbon tax that mostly hits the affluent, with plenty of deficit spending to make up the rest.

This is, obviously, not feasible right now. But nothing is feasible for the next couple of years because of Trump. What we need right now is some serious thinking about what to do if and when Democrats gain the political power to do anything, and that thinking needs to unapologetically focus on how to demand the smallest possible sacrifice from people. (Not really a problem to demand a big sacrifice from coal mine owners. Trump propped up the mine owners and when he goes down then Democrats should make sure the mine owners go down with him.)

Studying the demise of historic civilisations can tell us how much risk we face today, says collapse expert Luke Kemp. Worryingly, the signs are worsening. "Great civilisations are not murdered. Instead, they take their own lives." So concluded the historian Arnold Toynbee in his 12-volume magnum opus A Study of History. Huh.

Unbridled CO2 emissions have been going on since ... well, the Industrial Revolution ... and our past actions have put us on an irreversible path to doom, which NOBODY could do ANYTHING about even if they wanted to ... and yet you blame this all on Trump?

That's seriously stupid. Not only that, it keeps you from getting to the heart of who REALLY is at fault. I mean, not that accurate blame-laying makes any difference at this point (according to you) but I would think that you'd want to understand the REAL drivers of our rush to suicide, if only for bragging rights and intellectual honesty.

But then, look who I'm posting to! Intellectual honesty??? ha!

Trump Wins 2018 "Rubber Dodo Award" For Biggest Contribution To Trashing America's Natural Heritage

So, what has he done to deserve the award? Where to begin?

The CBD lists the slashing of more than 2 million acres from the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments in Utah, opening up Alaska’s National Petroleum Reserve to drilling after the Obama administration expanded protections to make it off-limits, and ramping up offshore drilling in most coastal states (though Florida, home of his Mar-a-Lago golf club, is strangely exempt).

His dubious ability to appoint leaders to the various US agencies designed to protect the environment also came under fire. From coal lobbyist Andrew Wheeler as head of the Environmental Protection Agency (Trump’s previous appointment, Scott Pruitt, famously resigned due to numerous scandals), to gas and oil lobbyist David Bernhardt leading the Department of the Interior (his predecessor Ryan Zinke, also resigned after numerous “ethics investigations"), and ardent Endangered Species Act opponent Susan Combs heading up its Wildlife and Parks department.

They also listed his anti-science stance, his climate change denying (or inability to even understand it), his attempts to repeal long-standing wildlife protections, from the Endangered Species Act to removing wolf protections in all 48 contiguous states, increasing logging on public lands, relaxing existing rules on air pollution, clean water, coal emissions, fuel emissions, methane emissions, and attempting to silence scientific research.

“Trump’s greed and ignorance know no bounds, and it’s having a profound effect on the natural world,” Suckling said.

Manufacturers and advertisers, for promoting mass consumption in the pursuit of ever more profit?

Banks specifically for lending out make-believe money but expecting real returns, imposing an "endless growth" mandate on a finite world?

Our military, for being the largest single user of energy in an immoral quest for economic extraction from the world?

Everyone in general for being stupid enough to go along with the plans of madmen?

I mean, since you seem incapable of even explaining your own thoughts I've certainly given you a lot of options to choose from!
