so for the record, let it be known that SECOND doesn't think that Hillary failed to gain 70% of the popular vote because she was worse than Trump in the eyes of a significant number of indepedent and Democratic voters, but that she lost the election because of racism and sexism on the part of that "basket of deplorables" who voted for someone else, or who faied to vote. In SECOND's eyes, Hillary was a suitable candidate for the DNC to field, and neither Hillary not the DNC made any mistakes during the campaign.

*****
Also let it be known, for the record, that SECOND advocates for the popular election of the President.

Alhto, I have so say, SECOND, that if you look at the results of popular elections everywhere - Senators, Representatives, Governors, state assemblypeople, mayors etc- you're unlikely to be happy with those results either, because the GOP will still be elected to office. Just look at the number of times that terrible GOP candidates were elected as President, WITH the popular vote. Once again, that giant grotch that you carry around with you is blinding you to reality. I don't know where all of your hate comes from, but it's doing you no good.

Personally, I think JO and (in a sideways kind of way, KIKI) have a better suggestion, and that is to reduce the role of POLITICAL PARTIES. That was ONE of the reasons for the electoral college. But it sure didn't work! The Founding Fathers hated the thought of a few things, private central banks being one (They had experience with the Bank of England to inform them), big giant corporations being another (East India Company was another example to avoid) and political parties being a third.

Why don't you turn that giant grotch towards a useful outcome, and figure out a way to reduce the role of money and political parties in our elections? It's a knotty problem to solve, just right for that kind of obsessive grinding that you're so good at!

3) Why don't you turn that giant grotch towards a useful outcome, and figure out a way to reduce the role of money and political parties in our elections? It's a knotty problem to solve, just right for that kind of obsessive grinding that you're so good at!

1) Presidents Bush and Trump did not win the popular vote. You went off on the tangent that terrible Republicans get elected to President. Well, I will contradict you by reminding you that Bush and Trump would not be President if the elections were decided by popular vote, same as Senators are elected. The real example I gave you was that Senators were elected by state legislatures until the 17th amendment stopped that goddamn nonsense and required the states to actually run elections for the Senate, not leave the decision to the state equivalent of the Electoral College.

2) You're not going to able to get rid of political parties. There is no country without at least one political party. The parties exist to make the party members stronger than they would be with every person is a one-man political party. People will bunch into political tribes even if you ban parties. They will keep their political affiliation a secret.

3) The uniquely American reasons that money is so important in elections is a) Citizens United (decided by a Republican majority in the Supreme Court. No Democrat voted for this. Only Republicans.) b) America runs elections every two years (other countries wait 4 years, 5 years, 6 years between elections) c) American law allows candidates to never stop campaigning. Other countries allow only a few weeks of campaigning. You might wish to fix a, b, and c, but you will be going against the war-chest of the Republican party and every GOP Congressman. Not one Democrat supports what all the Republicans are doing to make money the deciding factor in elections.

1) Reagan, Bush 1, and Nixon were also terrible GOP Presidents in their own way. History isn't limited to the last 18 years yanno. If I were to look back further in history, I'm sure I'd find a BUNCH of terrible Presidents of all parties, elected by popular vote. And BTW, Hillary would have been a terrible President too.

2) Did I say BAN political parties??? No, I didn't. But for some reason, there are many nations with multiple parties which need to form coalitions in order to govern, which offer the populace more policy choices.

3) Do you think that money only became important after Citizens United??? Oh, my dear child! Please re-think that post!

Picking one of your points: Nixon was a bad President before he was elected. LBJ knew it and did nothing. Numerous people knew it, passed the audio recordings on to LBJ and LBJ didn't have the fortitude to end Nixon's career because the GOP would have whined about it being totally unfair to reveal Nixon had committed a crime so close to an election. LBJ let Nixon reassure him falsely that Nixon would never, never, never contemplate treason. LBJ should have destroyed Nixon, but like most people, LBJ just didn't want to stir up trouble so close to his retirement. If LBJ had let the voters know what LBJ knew about Nixon, Nixon would have lost 1968 in a landslide.
http://hnn.us/articles/60446.html

Probably in regret for what he had NOT done to Nixon, in retirement LBJ took up heavy smoking, drinking, and all around gluttony to make himself feel better. Many Texans still do that when they feel like failures. They turn toward huge portions of food, tobacco, alcohol, drugs. It doesn't work. It killed LBJ only two days after Nixon's second inauguration. I wish it killed him sooner and more painfully. He deserved it.

6ix, the thing that you seem not to grasp is that failure or success don't happen for mysterious, uncontrollable reasons. It is not accidental. It is only partially luck. People, such as LBJ, deliberately make crappy choices because they are feeling tired or weak or depressed or whatever fucking reason they want to give to themselves for why they failed to do the hard thing they are suppose to do. LBJ's job was to destroy Nixon when Nixon broke the law and committed treason. LBJ didn't do it and millions of people suffered because LBJ didn't do his job. I'm not simply guessing: Robert A Caro has written 4 books on LBJ. He has done about 8 years work on the final book about LBJ's life. Every failure and success is analyzed. www.amazon.com/Robert-A.-Caro/e/B000AP80S4

In retirement, LBJ's job was to not drink and smoke himself to death. His daughters asked LBJ to not do it. He told his daughters it was none of their business. He would do as he pleased. If I was his son, I would have kicked his fat ass if LBJ ever smoked or was drunk. If he won't control himself, I'd hurt him. If somebody turns themselves into a failure around me, I am going to hurt them as much as they are hurting every one around them. But, then again, I was never an easygoing good guy.

You FURTHER narrow the conversation by pointing to ONE bad President who had won the popular vote, not the many Presidents (and other politicians) who did? You're still not worth responding to in detail.

Why is there a 17th amendment, which forced states, against their will, to hold popular elections for Senators? Because the current Constitution was broken. They could fix that break, but at the time they could not add popular elections for Presidents. 1kiki, this is why you are either a Russian troll or a dyed-in-the-wool conservative: you are extremely sensitive to preserving your image against all criticism.

The first proposal to amend the Constitution to elect senators by popular vote was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1826, but the idea did not gain considerable support until the late 19th century when several problems related to Senate elections had become evident. Several state legislatures deadlocked over the election of senators, which led to Senate vacancies lasting months and even years. In other cases, political machines gained control over state legislatures, and the Senators elected with their support were dismissed as puppets. In addition, the Senate was seen as a “millionaire's club” serving powerful private interests.

LBJ’s wife tells a story about him to Robert A Caro. Caro’s reaction:
I’m sure that I was too old to blush; I just, I am sure, felt as if I were blushing. The next week, we met in her office, for another long, immensely helpful interview, on other topics, during which I was able to look at her again.

Read the story then you will know why LBJ's wife didn't give a damn whether or not her husband killed himself with smoking and drinking after he retired from the White House. She outlived him by about 40 years. Life was much more pleasant without him.

Counter-examples: Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerald_Ford

Carter, the 39th president, still lives in the ranch house he built himself in 1961. The home, in rural Plains, Georgia (about a 2½-hour drive south of Atlanta) is a two-bedroom ranch assessed at just $167,000, which is less than the median home price in Georgia, which is $175,300, according to real estate site Zillow.
www.cnbc.com/2018/08/22/jimmy-carter-lives-in-an-inexpensive-house.htm
l

I checked for the value of the house I live in for the last 6 years. Compared to Jimmy Carter's house, the value is lower:
Land $26,576
Improvement $139,293
Total $165,869
http://hcad.org/quick-search/

I didn't build the house, unlike Carter, but I did pay to replace the steel pipes with PEX in December 2018 because the attic is cool in winter, but in summer is hot enough to kill a plumber.

SECOND ... speaking of random and self-contradictory rants .... you spend post after post bitterly attacking Trump specifically and Texas Republicans, the GOP, and people who voted against Hillary generally. You lay the blame for Trump's election on racism and sexism and a myriad of other factors (none of them the DNC's fault, of course!) and most lately on your last grotch: the Elecoral College and the Constitution of the United States.

Then you post a long, detailed attack on Pres Johnson, who was ... iirc ... a Democrat elected by the largest percent of the popular vote. Ever.

So, what's your point? You seem to have shot down your own arguments about Republicans and the electoral college in one fell swoop by demonstrating that

a) Democrats are just as bad as Republicans (You did the same when you attacked Kennedy) and
b) The popular vote is just as capable of electing assholes as the Electoral College

DO you have a point?

Arch-conservative Seattle attorney Eric Miller was confirmed as a judge on the country’s most liberal appeals court this week without the consent of either home-state senator, a break from tradition. Before this week, a nominee had never been confirmed without the support of at least one home-state senator.

The blue-slip process has weakened steadily over the past 20 years, and Republicans have edged closer and closer to killing it completely ever since Trump was elected president. Now that it’s happened once, it’s almost certain to happen routinely in the future.

With blue slips now all but dead, the only thing really standing in the way of the Senate becoming a normal legislative body is the filibuster and unanimous consent. Those will be next to go.
www.senate.gov/reference/glossary_term/unanimous_consent.htm

It will have been a long, crooked road that led to this point, but in the end it will be a good thing. Every state in the union and every country in the world seems to get by fine with normal legislative bodies, so why not the US Senate? Every country gets by fine without an Electoral College, so why not the US?

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

So you don't have a point. Got it.

Trumptards understand nothing at all. Trump ended his Hanoi press conference in typical style, blaming his failures on previous presidents who “did nothing, absolutely nothing.” Charming to the end. My local Trumptards were very impressed by Trump's accomplishments: "See, Trump prevented war with Korea. We were gonna have to invade because of that do nothing Obama, but Trump saved the day." Did the Trumptards understand that Kim remains well-fed, fat, and in charge of N Korea? That Kim will pass his power down to his son? That Kim has more H-bombs and missiles than he knows what to do with? That Trump saved nothing? Trumptards understand nothing at all.
