Trump, after the strike, told associates he was under pressure to deal with Gen. Soleimani from GOP senators he views as important supporters in his coming impeachment trial in the Senate. This would not mean Trump ordered the strike entirely, or even primarily, in order to placate Senate Republicans. But it does constitute an admission that domestic political considerations influenced his decision. That would, of course, constitute a grave dereliction of duty. Trump is so cynical he wouldn’t even recognize that making foreign policy decisions influenced by impeachment is the kind of thing he shouldn’t say out loud. Of course, using his foreign policy authority for domestic political gain is the offense Trump is being impeached for. It would be characteristically Trumpian to compound the offense as part of his efforts to avoid accountability for it.

pressure-to-kill-soleimani.html

It’s possible Trump didn’t mean what he said, or that the associates who heard his comments misread them. But the straightforward read of this is that Trump has confessed to a grave and even impeachable abuse of his power as commander-in-chief.

Wherever possible there must be independent confirmation of the facts.

Encourage substantive debate on the evidence by knowledgeable proponents of all points of view.

Arguments from authority carry little weight (in science there are no "authorities").

Spin more than one hypothesis - don't simply run with the first idea that caught your fancy.

Try not to get overly attached to a hypothesis just because it's yours.

Quantify, wherever possible.

If there is a chain of argument every link in the chain must work.

Occam's razor - if there are two hypotheses that explain the data equally well choose the simpler.

Ask whether the hypothesis can, at least in principle, be falsified (shown to be false by some unambiguous test). In other words, it is testable? Can others duplicate the experiment and get the same result?

No prosecutor would get a murder conviction using Carl Sagan's rules. Here is a case that took 5 years to come to trial and the only witness was one of the victims surviving being shot in the head. Sagan's rules require 2 victims to survive being shot IN THE HEAD:
www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/man-who-killed-6-members-ex-wife-s-family
-gets-n1065366

In the words of the prosecutor, Trump's "issue is not his mental illness, his issue is his personality," describing him as a "manipulative, selfish, narcissistic, blame-shifting monster."

Occam's razor, as mentioned by Carl Sagan, for Trump is that he will always be NOT GUILTY in the eyes of a Trump voter. Once again, Sagan's rules make a conviction impossible.

1kiki, that Carl Sagan checklist you keep quoting is for deciding larger questions, such as do you have an immortal soul living on after your death? It is not for triviality, like accusing your political enemies of not being “logical” in the sense that Mr Spock from Star Trek is always going on about.

1kiki, you need to check out Carl Sagan’s Chapter 12, The Fine Art Of Baloney Detection, from The Demon-Haunted World
www.amazon.com/Demon-Haunted-World-Science-Candle-Dark/dp/0345409469

Here is a page:

My parents died years ago. I was very close to them. I still miss them terribly. I know I always will. I long to believe that their essence, their personalities, what I loved so much about them, are— really and truly—still in existence somewhere. I wouldn’t ask very much, just five or ten minutes a year, say, to tell them about their grandchildren, to catch them up on the latest news, to remind them that I love them. There’s a part of me —no matter how childish it sounds—that wonders how they are. “Is everything all right?” I want to ask. The last words I found myself saying to my father, at the moment of his death, were “Take care.”

Sometimes I dream that I’m talking to my parents, and suddenly— still immersed in the dreamwork—I’m seized by the overpowering realization that they didn’t really die, that it's all been some kind of horrible mistake. Why, here they are, alive and well, my father making wry jokes, my mother earnestly advising me to wear a muffler because the weather is chilly. When I wake up I go through an abbreviated process of mourning all over again. Plainly, there’s something within me that’s ready to believe in life after death. And it’s not the least bit interested in whether there’s any sober evidence for it.

So I don’t guffaw at the woman who visits her husband’s grave and chats him up every now and then, maybe on the anniversary of his death. It’s not hard to understand. And if I have difficulties with the ontological status of who she’s talking to, that’s all right. That’s not what this is about. This is about humans being human. More than a third of American adults believe that on some level they’ve made contact with the dead. The number seems to have jumped by 15 percent between 1977 and 1988. A quarter of Americans believe in reincarnation.

But that doesn’t mean I’d be willing to accept the pretensions of a “medium,” who claims to channel the spirits of the dear departed, when I’m aware the practice is rife with fraud. I know how much I want to believe that my parents have just abandoned the husks of their . . .

1kiki, you obviously don’t understand the context for using Carl Sagan’s tools for thinking.

I agree that top Trump administration officials should stop declining to provide evidence that Soleimani would attack 4 US embassies.

Days after President Donald Trump claimed the US killed Iran's top military general because he was targeting four American embassies, two of the President's top national security officials are declining to provide evidence of the intelligence used to justify the US drone strike. In interviews that aired Sunday, Defense Secretary Mark Esper and national security adviser Robert O'Brien both did not cite specific intelligence information when pressed by their interviewers.

It never fails: somebody as ignorant as hell tells me they know better than me. When their way fails for them, but my way works for me, the ignoramus never, never in a million years, looks back and realizes they don't know as much as they think they know. They think their failure was "bad luck" and my success was "good luck" and "cheating". When their failures and my successes are repeated, again and again, the ignoramus can't believe I was not cheating or lucky and goes right back to explaining everything by luck and cheating. By the way, if Trump is reelected (he has a 50% chance and nothing can change the coin flip randomness of elections) that is good for me, bad for you, despite you wanting him to stay another term.

1kiki, Sagan's Baloney Detection Kit would tell you this cannot happen since it hasn't already happened at least twice:

With a New Weapon in Donald Trump's Hands, The Iran Crisis Risks Going Nuclear

In exclusive reporting for Newsweek, four senior military officers say they doubt that the now six-month standoff with Iran could escalate to nuclear war.

They each note the deployment of the new Trident II missile warhead is explicitly intended to make the threat of such an attack by America more credible, and point it out as a little understood or noticed change that increases the very danger.

All four also add, very reluctantly, that there is a "Donald Trump" factor involved: that there is something about this president and the new weapons that makes contemplating crossing the nuclear threshold a unique danger.

1kiki, I'm starting to believe you cannot think, little Russian troll:

When Donald Trump became president, one of his first acts was signing a memorandum on "Rebuilding" U.S. armed forces. That memorandum directed his new Secretary of Defense, retired Gen. James Mattis, to initiate a new Nuclear Posture Review and to ensure that the nuclear deterrent was "ready and appropriately tailored to deter 21st-century threats."

Inside the nuclear establishment, "appropriately tailored" meant a new small nuclear weapon, one deliverable by a ballistic missile rather than from a bomber. The latter, as was gamed in the Global Thunder exercise, would take 11 hours to fly from home base in Missouri to either Iran or North Korea. A missile, on the other hand, could take 30 minutes, and a forward-deployed submarine-launched missile could take just 10-15 minutes.

North Korea's string of long-range missile tests in the first year of the Trump administration accentuated this "hole" in U.S. nuclear capabilities, a senior Air Force officer involved in the nuclear deliberations says. In the most pressing scenario involving the imminent use of weapons of mass destruction, existing missiles were rejected as a credible deterrent threat because their warhead size was thought to be too large to be "usable."

More at www.newsweek.com/trump-iran-new-nuclear-weapon-increases-risk-crisis-n
uclear-1481752

1kiki, Sagan's Baloney Detection Kit says nuclear war is "baloney" because it has not happened at least twice, in front of experimental scientists meticulously recording the data for posterity. Trump would have to use two missiles, one on Iran, one on Korea, before "baloney" becomes scientific proof that Trump is nuts, as measured by Sagan's Baloney Detection Kit.

So I've been listening to various interpretations of how complicit Trump was on this murder of Soleimani. Scott Ritter (a former Marine intelligence officer and weapons inspector under Hans Blix, and who gave us the straight dope on how thorough the inspections were, and told us why there were NO WMD in Iraq) believes that this was at Trump's behest. According to him, the CIA had set up an Iran Mission Center, which means that Iran was raised to a level of National Security, giving the chief of that center dibs on satellite positioning, sigint etc. In looking this up, I found this

Quote:

In 2017, the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) created a special unit — the Iran Mission Center — to focus attention on the U.S. plans against Iran. The initiative for this unit came from CIA director John Brennan, who left his post as the Trump administration came into office. Brennan believed that the CIA needed to focus attention on what the United States sees as problem areas — North Korea and Iran, for instance. This predated the Trump administration.

Brennan’s successor — Mike Pompeo, who was CIA director for just over a year (until he was appointed U.S. Secretary of State) — continued this policy. The CIA’s Iran-related activity had been conducted in the Iran Operations Division (Persia House). This was a section with Iran specialists who built up knowledge about political and economic developments inside Iran and in the Iranian diaspora.
Advertisement:

It bothered the hawks in Washington — as one official told me — that Persia House was filled with Iran specialists who had no special focus on regime change in Iran. Some of them, due to their long concentration on Iran, had developed sensitivity to the country. Trump’s people wanted a much more focused and belligerent group that would provide the kind of intelligence that tickled the fancy of his National Security Adviser John Bolton.

To head the Iran Mission Center, the CIA appointed Michael D’Andrea. D’Andrea was central to the post-9/11 interrogation program, and he ran the CIA’s Counterterrorism Center. Assassinations and torture were central to his approach.

It was D’Andrea who expanded the CIA’s drone strike program, in particular the signature strike. The signature strike is a particularly controversial instrument. The CIA was given the allowance to kill anyone who fit a certain profile — a man of a certain age, for instance, with a phone that had been used to call someone on a list. The dark arts of the CIA are precisely those of D’Andrea.

According to Scott Ritter, it is his BELIEF that Trump is running the Cheney playbook: pester the CIA for intel that would provide an excuse for what you're going to do anyway. But there are two things that counter that scenario

1) If Trump had authored the drone murder, would he have looked so stricken and ill-at-ease during his first press conference afterwards?

2) More importantly, would he have negotiated an off-ramp with the Iranians (thru the Swiss Embassy) requesting a "proprortionate" response and vowing no retaliation if they (the Iranians) limited their response?

Listening to the mechanics of that negotiation brings up a couple of questions that so far haven't been explicitly answered. What was the timing of the drone murder that killed Soleimani? Was it ordered when Trump as ambushed at Mar A Lago by a gaggle of neocons and deep staters? And when did the negotiations begin? When Trump returned to the WH?

Because SOMEone is Trump's friend. SOMEone provided Trump not only with a butt-puckering view of the consequences that had been potentially unleashed but also with a communications pathway and contacts to reversing the incident, as much as possible. That SOMEone ... or several someones ... aren't in the CIA, the State Department, the NSC, or the neocon Senate. They're not Pompeo, Esper, Haspel, Graham, Cotton or Rubio, but back in DC.

One more comment: supposedly Pompeo has said that he wanted to kill Soleimani before he retited from the WH. I guess Pompous gets to clear this from his bucket list before he makes a Senate run.

The overwhelming impression that I get is that Trump's foreign policy is STILL not under his control; that after getting fooled by the CIA about Skripal and "Assad gassed his own people" and having Bolt-on torpedo the talks with N Korea in Vietnam and having Pmpous get Soleimani murdered, Trump needs to do far, far more than cleaning up after the elephant parade. Not only does he need to get people fired he needs to replace themwith competent people who aren't intent on starting wars and regime changes.

I've been reading ordinary Newsweek, and it says Trump wants the option to drop a nuke to shock and awe Iran. Trump now has that option and it makes the military worried that he may foolishly use it in a fit of pique to murder an Iranian big-shot:

In February 2018, the Trump administration concluded its own Nuclear Posture Review. The Review formally called for a new low-yield warhead to be deployed on Navy Trident II submarine-launched missiles. Though articulated as a counter to Russia, government and non-government officials today agree that the new W76-2 warhead was all along also intended to fill the niche of providing a usable and prompt weapon to counter imminent North Korean or Iranian attacks, either with WMD or long-range missiles.

In September, according to officials who spoke on background because no announcement has been made, the first W76-2 warheads were delivered to the Navy. That W76-2 is thought to have an explosive yield of between 5-6 kilotons (5-6 thousand tons) – about one-third the size of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Kristensen estimates that some 50 of these small, "prompt" warheads will be deployed on Trident submarines, and that two of the 24 missiles aboard each of 12 submarines will be so armed.

If there was any conceivable American nuclear strike on Iran, sources agree, it would come from the new low-yield Trident submarine-based system.

On the philosophical question of using nuclear weapons, all six Air Force and STRATCOM sources I spoke to expressed concern that the very existence of nuclear options, with this president, complicated their otherwise clear conviction that there was no way nuclear weapons could be used against Iran.

But as the current nuclear war plans are written, the use of such a weapon could be justified, almost Hiroshima-like, as a shocking thunderclap to forestall a wider and theoretically more destructive all-out war.

"It is a capability that the United States did not have a year ago," the officer says, built precisely to be used, even to be used preemptively.

Trump added to the controversy over his administration’s justification for the killing of an Iranian general, saying Monday that “it doesn’t really matter” whether it was in response to an imminent threat to the United States.

In a tweet, Trump criticized Democrats for trying to determine whether Iranian attacks the administration has said were planned by Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani against U.S. targets were imminent.

The Trump administration’s stated justification for ordering the U.S. drone strike that killed Soleimani in Baghdad on Jan. 3 was he planned imminent attacks on Americans and had to be stopped.

The interpretation that fits best is that Trump wanted nukes to assassinate Kim Jong-un (remember "Fire and Fury"? There are youtube videos of Trump saying he planned on killing Kim) and the Pentagon obliged Trump by modifying existing warheads to make the W76-2. Trump might use the W76-2 on Iran's Ayatollah to "preempt" a war with Iran. That won't be a "preemption". It will be a war that starts by assassinating the Iranian Supreme Leader, completely bypassing Congress because Trump is "worried" or "concerned" that Democrats will not vote for war, maybe the Democrats even warn the Ayatollah, which would mean Trump accuses the Democrats, all of them, of "treason" and helping the enemy.

Trump has floated the idea of thwarting hurricanes (ayatollahs?) headed for the US by bombing them, including by dropping nuclear bombs on hurricanes (ayatollahs?) to disrupt their course, Axios reported, citing conversations with sources who heard Trump's comments and were briefed on a National Security Council memo that recorded the comments.

The W76-2 warhead did NOT happen because ... TRUMP! It appears there is a minimum 5 year R&D / testing / retooling, and scale-up delay built in. That would put the W76-2 back in the Obama presidency.

And indeed, the W76 was first conceptualized in 1973, and had been in production since 1979. While the W76 life-extension / revamp as the W76-1 was slated for 207.

Get with it morons. Just because a story quoted here shows an MSN address the actual stories are from other sources.

Here is an example: The link below says MSN but the story was written by the Washington Post. The fact that you don't know that shows you're, as always, ignorant about the topic you're posting about.

MSM, stupid.

M is different from N here, just like "it" is different from "in".

I can't believe I actually have to explain this to another human being. I really think you're evidence that neanderthals actually did survive.

And I haven't called it MSM for almost a year now. That would suggest it's mainstream, which it clearly isn't anymore. It's the Legacy Media.

Since it can be assumed without error that you don't know what legacy means, I suggest Googling it.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Well, aside from your egregious mistake of thinking that I was referring to "a" website, let's move on to your bigger mistake (yep, there is one)

Here are a few very recent headlines that I'm fair certain didn't appear in your "objective" websites ...

Yanno THUGR, stuff is happening all over the world. Some of it is world-changing, and yet you won't see hide nor hair in our "objective" media. The media selects what it wants to present. It's called "bias by selection and omission" and you can create any narrative you want by careful selection. (AND, OF COURSE, OUTRIGHT LIES, WHICH THE MEDIA HAS ALSO ENGAGED IN)

You're funny sig. You recently said living in Russia affords all the same freedoms and benefits of living in America, a democracy.

Sorry, but it's you that doesn't know what's going on in the world comrade. If you don't see the chasm of separation that exists between living under a dictator and living in a democracy, you surly are a Russian troll too afraid to stand up and change your circumstances. And you surly shouldn't be telling others how to think or live.

Turn to your right, then your left and tell kiki and Jack the jig is up.

1) Bullshit. Never posted such a thing. Is this going to be like the conversation that that TWITCHY claims happened, that she can't find and nobody else can remember? LINKS, OR IT HASN'T HAPPENED.

2) It might surprise you to know that Russia IS a democracy. They have multiparty elections with secret votes and (as far as I can tell) paper ballots; they have a Parliament and everything. In fact, the leading party is NOT the Communist Party, it is Russia United, and they have six parties in Parliament (a better choice than ours, where we have only three parties represented).

The days when all you could vote for was Communist Party members ended thirty years ago, dood. Try to keep up with the times! There are a lot of criticisms one could aim at Russia, but when you reach for the trope that Russia isn't a democracy you just look stoopid.

And then you double down on stoopid.

Here's the thing: You celebrate unelected unaccountable deep-staters who're busy running a foreign policy that nobody voted for and who're trying to depose a duly elected President. If this happened in Russia you would be screaming DIKTATORSHIP! but here you think it's a great idea?

so, an analysis of Putin's proposed changes to the Russian government:

Putin will step down from Presidential office, permanently, and reduce the role of President (his role, and future Presidents)

He will enhance the role of the Russian parliament (Duma) and a state council

Hardly the work of a "dictator".

*****

But this is like any post about the Democratic candidates ... it gets derailed very quickly into a screed about Trump.
YOU tend to derail any foreign policy discussion into YOUR fixation, which is RUSSIA!!!
