Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

DOOOOOD ...

Do you think you can pull your head out of Trump's ass long enough to stop perverting every single fact in the universe into some kind of Trump-related hyperbole?

US PEONS ON THE WHOLE PLANET ARE EXPENDABLE. It's been that way for decades. It'll continue that way for decades, coronavirus or no coronavirus. Trump is completely beside the point in the GLOBAL grand scheme of things.

Get a grip. Stop frying your brain into bot-ism.

BTW - I give Trump a lot of credit for keeping Chinese nationals from entering the country and limiting who can enter. I guarantee A LOT of other Americans feel the same way, which is why his approval rating is going up. And I bet Italy wishes they'd done the same things sooner. As for Italy ... yeah, the other European countries are hardening their borders against Italy. And schengen looks like it's going to go the way of the dodo in the pandemic challenge.

And if democrats don't do any different, how are they any better?

I DID read it. Did you? All the way to the end?

BTW - you were geographically closer to the Ebola response under Obama - the one where a single Ebola patient on US soil managed to infect 2 nurses in a completely botched response. That went well, didn't it?

Your response above means the same as your signature: And if democrats don't do any different, how are they any better? The next thing you could do, 1kiki, is to complain about the powers that be (TPTB) not respecting you. TPTB know and care about you exactly as much, and in the same way, as your nearby neighbors who have never met you and don't care to. That's why TPTB do exactly what your neighbors do for you: nothing.

1kiki, if you were not such a panicky troll you'd know that so far (updated Feb. 19), the new coronavirus, dubbed COVID-19, has led to more than 75,000 illnesses and 2,000 deaths, primarily in mainland China. But that's nothing compared with the flu, also called influenza. In the U.S. alone, the flu has already caused an estimated 26 million illnesses, 250,000 hospitalizations and 14,000 deaths this season, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

www.livescience.com/new-coronavirus-compare-with-flu.html

On a personal note: I have no allergies, I take no medicines, other than an annual flu shot and the two pneumonia vaccines and I have not been sick even once in the 21st Century. I also passed my immunity to disease onto my children and grandchildren. It follows that I am not a panicky troll like 1kiki is about coronavirus.

What Trump did is equivalent to disbanding the Fire Department and selling all the Fire trucks and knocking down the fire station. What 1kiki is doing is equivalent to yelling fire in a crowded theater. Do you see the difference?

This is what an informative article looks like (completely unlike Trump's brand of stupidity or 1kiki's very different style of stupidity, anxiety and fear):

You’re Likely to Get the Coronavirus

Most cases are not life-threatening, which is also what makes the virus a historic challenge to contain.

www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/02/covid-vaccine/607000/

The Harvard epidemiology professor Marc Lipsitch is exacting in his diction, even for an epidemiologist. Twice in our conversation he started to say something, then paused and said, “Actually, let me start again.” So it’s striking when one of the points he wanted to get exactly right was this: “I think the likely outcome is that it will ultimately not be containable.”

Lipsitch predicts that, within the coming year, some 40 to 70 percent of people around the world will be infected with the virus that causes COVID-19. But, he clarifies emphatically, this does not mean that all will have severe illnesses. “It’s likely that many will have mild disease, or may be asymptomatic,” he said. As with influenza, which is often life-threatening to people with chronic health conditions and of older age, most cases pass without medical care. (Overall, around 14 percent of people with influenza have no symptoms.)

Lipsitch is far from alone in his belief that this virus will continue to spread widely. The emerging consensus among epidemiologists is that the most likely outcome of this outbreak is a new seasonal disease—a fifth “endemic” coronavirus. With the other four, people are not known to develop long-lasting immunity. If this one follows suit, and if the disease continues to be as severe as it is now, “cold and flu season” could become “cold and flu and COVID-19 season.”

At this point, it is not even known how many people are infected. As of Sunday, there have been 35 confirmed cases in the U.S., according to the World Health Organization. But Lipsitch’s “very, very rough” estimate when we spoke a week ago (banking on “multiple assumptions piled on top of each other,” he said) was that 100 or 200 people in the U.S. were infected. That’s all it would take to seed the disease widely. The rate of spread would depend on how contagious the disease is in milder cases. On Friday, Chinese scientists reported in the medical journal JAMA an apparent case of asymptomatic spread of the virus, from a patient with a normal chest CT scan. The researchers concluded with stolid understatement that if this finding is not a bizarre abnormality, “the prevention of COVID-19 infection would prove challenging.”

With so little data, prognosis is difficult. But the concern that this virus is beyond containment—that it will be with us indefinitely—is nowhere more apparent than in the global race to find a vaccine, one of the clearest strategies for saving lives in the years to come.

Over the past month, stock prices of a small pharmaceutical company named Inovio more than doubled. In mid-January, it reportedly discovered a vaccine for the new coronavirus. This claim has been repeated in many news reports, even though it is technically inaccurate. Like other drugs, vaccines require a long testing process to see if they indeed protect people from disease, and do so safely. What this company—and others—has done is copy a bit of the virus’s RNA that one day could prove to work as a vaccine. It’s a promising first step, but to call it a discovery is like announcing a new surgery after sharpening a scalpel.

Inovio is far from the only small biotech company venturing to create a vaccine. Others include Moderna, CureVac, and Novavax. Academic researchers are also on the case, at Imperial College London and other universities, as are federal scientists in several countries, including at the U.S. National Institutes of Health. Anthony Fauci, head of the NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, wrote in JAMA in January that the agency was working at historic speed to find a vaccine. During the SARS outbreak in 2003, researchers moved from obtaining the genomic sequence of the virus and into a phase 1 clinical trial of a vaccine in 20 months. Fauci wrote that his team has since compressed that timeline to just over three months for other viruses, and for the new coronavirus, “they hope to move even faster.”

1kiki, you are stupider than Trump: On Saturday, Politico reported that the White House is preparing to ask Congress for $1 billion in emergency funding for a coronavirus response. This request, if it materialized, would come in the same month in which President Donald Trump released a new budget proposal that would cut key elements of pandemic preparedness—funding for the CDC, the NIH, and foreign aid.

This is how Signym's concept of Trump as a "Loose Cannon" is working:

The world could be caught flat-footed in the face of a mounting crisis. In the U.S., those concerns have been exacerbated by the Trump administration, which had been reluctant to request additional money from Congress to deal with the deadly disease, despite Democratic demands they do so. White House officials expressed hopes that the “virus would burn itself out by the summer,” according to Politico, speculation that it is more concerned about the image it is projecting than preventing an outbreak at home. “They don’t want to make it a bigger thing,” one senior Democratic aide told the outlet recently.

Even if Congress provides additional funding, there remain fears that the Trump administration has already hamstrung it’s ability to address this emergency. As Foreign Policy’s Laurie Garrett wrote last month, the administration has “intentionally rendered itself incapable” of dealing with a problem of this scale. It wiped out its “entire pandemic response chain of command, including the White House management infrastructure,” Garrett wrote, and shut down the National Security Council’s global health security team, as well as its counterpart in the Department of Homeland Security. In addition to proposing funding cuts for national and global health programs, the administration has also kneecapped its public health teams by declining to replace officials who have left. While the president established a Coronavirus Task Force led by Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar last month, “it’s not clear how it will function,” Garrett noted—essentially forcing the administration to “resort to improvisation” in its approach to the crisis.

Trump can handle coronavirus, 1kiki. He said so:

When a senior White House aide would brief President Donald Trump in 2018 about an Ebola-virus outbreak in central Africa, it was plainly evident that hardships roiling a far-flung part of the world didn’t command his attention. He was zoning out. “It was like talking to a wall,” a person familiar with the matter told me.

Now a new coronavirus that originated in China is confronting him with a potential pandemic, a problem that Trump seems ill-prepared to meet. A crisis that is heading into its third month could draw out every personal and managerial failing that the president has shown to this point. Much of what he’s said publicly about the virus has been wrong, a consequence of downplaying any troubles on his watch. He has long stoked fears that foreigners entering the United States bring disease. Now he may double down on xenophobic suspicions. He has hollowed out federal agencies and belittled expertise, prioritizing instead his own intuition and the demands of his political base. But he’ll need to rely on a bureaucracy he’s maligned to stop the virus’s spread.

From the first, Trump has offered false reassurance. In a CNBC interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, last month, Trump maintained that the coronavirus was “totally under control” and that he wasn’t concerned about the risk of a pandemic. “It’s going to be just fine,” he said.

Except that it wasn’t under control—it still isn’t—and no one knows just how bad it will be. “Even a middle schooler wouldn’t have said that,” Michael Mina, an epidemiology professor at Harvard’s School of Public Health, told me. “Everyone is using caution in how we’re framing what the risk is, primarily because we don’t understand what the risk is at this moment. The last thing anyone would say is, ‘We’re not concerned.’ Everyone is concerned.”

What? What?? You are off by an order of magnitude too high. I am small fry. And Trump is a big lying sack of shit. He needs somebody to handle coronavirus for him, but he fired the guy. When Trump asked about the next guy in the chain of command over coronavirus, he was told that guy got fired by Trump, too. Trump had literally said, "You're fired!" thinking that the White House is a TV show. Trump may believe casualties in the Trump Show are actually stuntmen trained to fall down and fake death by coronavirus. When the director shouts "Cut!" on the Trump Show, the stuntmen get up again for the next take. If they don't, that's not Trump's problem or responsibility, since he will be golfing or traveling or campaigning.

Trump gives false hope, claims vaccine is ‘very close’ amid coronavirus outbreak.

The White House said President Trump was referring to the Ebola virus — not the deadly coronavirus — when he claimed that “we’re very close to a vaccine.”

The Food and Drug Administration announced in December that it had approved a vaccine for the prevention of the Ebola virus.

Elsewhere in the press conference, Trump downplayed the threat of the coronavirus to the U.S., saying, “We’re really down to probably 10” cases. There are currently 53 confirmed U.S. cases of coronavirus. No, 54 cases. No, 55 cases. No, 56 cases. No . . .

You are calling Trump a troll? Donald Trump seems to know very little about the coronavirus.

President Donald Trump has lots and lots of thoughts about the novel coronavirus. Unfortunately, most of those thoughts are either wrong or factually questionable.

At a press conference during his visit to India on Tuesday, Trump made a number of claims about the virus that were at best hugely optimistic and at worst deeply misleading.

"I think that's a problem that's going to go away," Trump said of the virus.

In that news conference, the President insisted that "they have studied it. They know very much. In fact, we're very close to a vaccine." There's no available evidence that a vaccine is "close," in fact, most infectious disease experts say developing a vaccine for the virus is roughly a year away.

Trump also claimed in the news conference that all the US coronavirus patients "are getting better ... they're all getting better." That followed a tweet very early Tuesday morning in India that read: "The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA. We are in contact with everyone and all relevant countries. CDC & World Health have been working hard and very smart. Stock Market starting to look very good to me!"

Trump has repeatedly offered rosy predictions about the disease's arc -- most notably pushing the idea that warming temperatures (as winter turns to spring across North America) will reduce its impact much like seasonal flu.

There are mistruths and there MISTRUTHS. And when you are misleading people -- whether intentionally or not -- about a public health emergency, it's very much in that latter category. Because Trump is a known prevaricator and exaggerator, there is a tendency to view all of his mistruths through the there-he-goes-again lens.

"We Can't Stop This": Japan Rolls Out New 'Harm Reduction' Policy Aimed At Limiting Virus-Related Deaths

Overwhelmed by a flurry of 'unsolved' cases (that is, cases with no obvious connection to the outbreak in China, or anywhere else), Japanese health authorities announced on Tuesday a new plan intended to focus the country's precious medical resources on the most serious cases, while advising those with mild symptoms to treat themselves at home.

The approach differs markedly from the heavy handed tactics employed by Beijing, which at its peak had 760 million - roughly half the country - under some form of lockdown restriction.

According to the Washington Post, the "basic premise" of the Japanese plan is that the virus can't be stopped. That's right: The Japanese are essentially acknowledging that the thesis proposed by Harvard epidemiologist Marc Lipsitch - ie that 70% of the world's population might someday contract the virus - has at least some legitimacy.

Without looking too deeply into the whys and wherefores ... it seems the death rate is sensitive to either the (1) ability of the medical system to treat the illness or (2) the abundance of test kits and thoroughness of testing or (3) the race being struck.

When the virus hits a shipful of wealthy, mostly Anglos, or several towns of Italians, the death rate appears pretty low (0.5%). Higher than the regular flu (0.08% usually attributed to the flu) but not as bad as reoprted from China (2-2.5%).

OTOH, if reinfection is possible and the symptoms are worse than the first infection, Japan's strategy (let people "self isolate", only treat the sickest) is going to come back and bite them in the butt, because the virus won't sweep thru leaving behind a resistant population, it will sweep thru and leave behind an especially vulnerable one, ripe for an even worse crisis later.

It's critically important that this issue of "reinfection" be understood: What kind of immunity is built up (if any)? How often does reinfection occur? Are the symptoms worse that the first infection? Among other things, if the immune response is weak or (worse) counterproductive, then the idea of a vaccine doesn't promise much.

New outbreak clusters emerge in South Korea, Iran and Italy, while the WHO advises to prepare for a pandemic

Preparing for a pandemic: World Health Organization officials say it's still too early to declare the novel coronavirus a pandemic — but now is the time to prepare.

Italy admits hospital mess-up as officials scramble to contain virus

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has tried to allay fears that the central government has no control over the affected regions after he was forced to admit that a hospital in the northern town of Codogno had mishandled the region's first coronavirus case and had contributed to the deadly virus' spread.
Italy now has the highest number of coronavirus infections outside Asia, as 54 new cases were detected in the country's north overnight, bringing the total to 283, the Italian civil protection agency said Tuesday.

The cases are heavily concentrated in the region of Lombardy where 212 infections have been confirmed. Seven people have so far died from the virus in the country.

There was a program initiated under George W. Bush and continued through Barack Obama’s eight years in office; then, last fall the Trump administration shut it down. What program?

A program called Predict to identify and research infectious diseases in animal populations in the developing world. Most new viruses that impact humans — apparently including the one causing the Covid-19 disease — emerge through this route, so investing in early research is the kind of thing that, at modest ongoing cost, served to reduce the likelihood of rare but catastrophic events.

Trump. Shut. It. Down.

Hmm... I take that back about death rate in Italy. 322 cases, 10 dead, is 3%.

Now. There are a lot of questions about China's reported death rate. One thing that statisticians noted is that it stubbornly stayed at 2.1%. Normally, you would expect to see fluctuation, so the thought is that China is fudging its numbers.

The other problem with "death rate" is that, while it's easy to count the dead, it's a lot more difficult to count the infected, especially if a number of people have mild cases (attributed to normal flu) or are even apparently healthy. If there is a lack of test kits ... or the tests produce false negatives ... then the infection rate wil be undercounted, potentially significantly, which will create an inflated death rate.

I don't know how these things are done in epidemiology-land, but it seems to me that the only way to get a true infection rate is to take a random sampling of the apparently healthy, as well as the apparently sick. Pretty sure that isn't happening anywhere!

Trump’s first budget proposal contained proposed cuts to the CDC that former Director Tom Frieden warned were “unsafe at any level of enactment.”

Congress mercifully didn’t agree to any such cuts, but as recently as February 11 — in the midst of the outbreak — Trump proposed huge cuts to both the CDC and the National Institutes of Health.

Perhaps because his budget officials were in the middle of proposing cuts to disease response, it’s only over this past weekend that they pivoted and started getting ready to ask for the additional money that coping with Covid-19 is clearly going to cost.

Yeah, reading this with fresh eyes I can see how it might be misleading. They would have been more accurate (and less sensational) phrasing it something like ... California tells 7,600 people to 'self-quarantine' because of coronavirus concerns

Still, it does make an important point - there's a LOT of travel between California and China, and so a LOT of potential points of new infection chains here in the US.

CDC official warns Americans it's not a question of if coronavirus will spread, but when

"As community spread is detected in more and more countries, the world moves closer toward meeting the third criteria: worldwide spread of the new virus," she warned. "As more and more countries experience community spread, successful containment at our borders becomes harder and harder."

"Now is the time for US businesses, hospitals, and communities to begin preparing for the possible spread of #COVID19," it wrote, referring to the name the World Health Organization has given the novel coronavirus. "CDC continues to work with business, education & healthcare sectors, encouraging employers to be prepared."

The CDC still doesn't know what that will look like, she added. Community spread could be reasonably mild or very severe.

"We are asking the American public to work with us to prepare in the expectation that this could be bad," she said. "The data over the last week, and the spread in other countries, has certainly raised our level of concern and raised our level of expectation" of community spread, she said.

Americans should also talk to employers about working online and talk to doctor's offices about telehealth, the CDC says.

The viruses can make people sick, usually with a mild to moderate upper respiratory tract illness, similar to a common cold. Coronavirus symptoms include a runny nose, cough, sore throat, possibly a headache and maybe a fever, which can last for a couple of days.

For those with a weakened immune system, the elderly and the very young, there's a chance the virus could cause a lower, and much more serious, respiratory tract illness such as pneumonia or bronchitis.

People may be able to reduce their risk of infection by avoiding those who are sick, avoiding touching their eyes, nose and mouth, and washing hands often with soap and water and for at least 20 seconds.

C.D.C. Officials Warn of Coronavirus Outbreaks in the U.S.

The coronavirus almost certainly will begin spreading in communities in the United States, and Americans should begin preparations now, officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Tuesday.

“It’s not so much of a question of if this will happen anymore but rather more of a question of exactly when this will happen,” Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said in a news briefing.

In the event of an outbreak, communities should plan for “social distancing measures,” like dividing school classes into smaller groups of students, closing schools, canceling meetings and conferences, and arranging for employees to work from home.

“We are asking the American public to prepare for the expectation that this might be bad,” Dr. Messonnier said.

“We cannot hermetically seal off the United States to a virus,” Alex M. Azar II, the secretary of health and humans services, told a Senate panel on Tuesday. “And we need to be realistic about that.”

Mr. Azar said he was alarmed by the human-to-human transmission of the virus in other parts of the world without an identifiable connection to confirmed cases, and what that could mean for how the virus may hit the United States in the coming months.

Individually, people can take the measures recommended for other infectious diseases, like washing their hands, covering their mouths when they cough, and staying home and away from others when they are sick.

It's a good thing I'm not in a huge rush to go working for somebody else just yet. I'll just camp out and see what happens.

I'm just grading myself on the spread of SARS-COV-2. Pretty early on I was extremely critical of WHO, and my opinion was that global spread was inevitable because WHO (Tedros) was far too compromised to do what needed to be done. But I was also far too optimistic that 'somebody' at 'some point' would do 'something' to stop the train I saw coming down the tracks. I was giving the benefit of the doubt, and putting hopeful question marks on what I thought was the near future.

Wednesday, January 22, 2020 4:58 PM
If this is an actual emergency, the WHO is acting far too cautiously.

Wednesday, January 22, 2020 7:19 PM
Obviously (to me) the virus is fairly easily (explosively) spreading person-to-person, despite all the cautious statements about unknown contagiousness.
So, if I use past experience with previous corona-virus outbreaks to predict the forward path of this corona-virus "2019-nCoV" outbreak, we have neither drugs nor vaccines to combat it, nor are we likely to have any in the future.

Friday, January 24, 2020 3:05 PM
My opinion is that given the information so far - especially the virus's explosive spread far past its origin in mere weeks - officials shouldn't be waiting for proof of pandemic, they should be acting on the potential for one. Otherwise, we're just hoping for luck. I dunno. How lucky do we feel today, punk?

Sunday, January 26, 2020 1:39 PM
I think 'm going to look like an idiot and start wearing a mask. And using hand sanitizer where I can find it, and asking the stores I frequent to set some out for general use.

Wednesday, January 29, 2020 6:47 PM
My personal opinion is that I see no reason why this won't eventually spread globally. For every confirmed case, I think they're at least 5 undiagosed. Those people are infectious, and can go around quietly infecting other people, who infect other people, and so on.
So the start may be small-scale in other countries, but unless either the virus changes, or control measures are adequate, I don't see anything other than a spread of the virus.
But, we'll see.

Sunday, February 2, 2020 4:44 PM
Yanno, I've been posting for quite some time that 'it all depends'. What are the virus characteristics? How does it mutate? What precautionary measures are, or aren't, being taken?

No one can predict the outcome, with, again IMO, the biggest variable being the number of unidentified cases in the general population. But if 2019-nCoV should get a toehold, the second variable would be if there's brisk and maybe even draconian measures to stop the spread.
I think US authorities will have the necessary data in 2 or 3 weeks about which way this is going.

Friday, February 7, 2020 7:26 PM
So, patient zero in this case was spreading coronavirus without a fever for 4-5 days (depending on time of embarking Jan 20 and debarking Jan 25). And either he had a heck of a lot of 'close contact' with 61 other passengers, OR the virus is spread more easily than officials state, and/or newly infected passengers are spreading coronavirus in a very short time.

Friday, February 9, 2020 4:35 PM
But we won't know what happens TO US, until we know

Wednesday, February 12, 2020 4:38 AM
In general, this is a sensitive type of test method, but there seems to be a lot of false negatives (the virus isn't detected even though people are infected) with this particular virus.
Wednesday, February 12, 2020 7:41 PM
the lack of test kits (which test for viral RNA), and imo the number of false negatives
Sunday, February 16, 2020 4:39 PM
we need better tests !!
Monday, February 17, 2020 7:26 PM
If there were sufficiently good tests for SARS-COV-2 that were accurate enough, cheap enough, and fast enough - the government could go out and test random people in the population, instead of waiting for sick people to show up in the ER, or at some type of border entry. That would give the government an earlier, better idea of distribution in the particular population they were testing.
Sunday, February 23, 2020 4:41 PM
The problem is, we don't have a handle on everyone who was exposed.

Wednesday, February 19, 2020 6:12 PM
there doesn't appear to be any large-scale epidemics outside of China, that we know about, though there looks to be community spread in some countries

Friday, February 21, 2020 1:57 PM
Clade X pandemic tabletop exercise on May 15, 2018 - The conclusion was that the world - and more importantly the US - are so unprepared for a deadly viral pandemic, that without a vaccine in the immediate months, it would devastate every country on the planet.

Saturday, February 22, 2020 2:39 AM
As I see it, the next 2 steps which it seems we should all hope to avoid are 1) community spread in many other countries around the world, and 2) community spread in our respective countries.

Monday, February 24, 2020 2:59 PM
I do expect Wuhan COV to entrench in the US at some point. I do expect it to start locally (or as many different 'localies') of course. But recognition at the national level of local/ regional conditions will be so delayed, they won't be able to take meaningful action to stop the spread.

Tuesday, February 25, 2020 12:08 AM
Oh, BTW, I think it's the CDC and the State Department telling people there is sustained local transmission of coronavirus in Japan, Korea, Iran, and Italy.

Well ... on the one hand you say you want a meritocracy. And these people are true global experts as good or better than anyone else you'll find anywhere on the planet. They'd easily be making at least several times more if they worked for private industry instead of public health.

OTOH you seem to resent them because they're not making the same wages as someone who moves boxes and pallets. Their jobs are too cushy compared to their expertise.

idk, Jack. Maybe you could do a better job explaining what your thoughts are.

But I was also far too optimistic that 'somebody' at 'some point' would do 'something' to stop the train I saw coming down the tracks. I was giving the benefit of the doubt, and putting hopeful question marks on what I thought was the near future.

You are not as smart as you think. If WHO can't stop the Flu, it is obvious that WHO can't stop coronavirus. The WHO is NOT capable and never has been: Flu Kills 646,000 People Worldwide Each Year.
www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=208914

What does stop coronavirus? The human immune system, which is not under any kind of bureaucratic control. It is completely unplanned, evolving randomly, with no consciousness at all. One of these days the immune system will fail much worse than normal and the damage will be huge: The Spanish flu pandemic of 1918, the deadliest in history, infected an estimated 500 million people worldwide — about one-third of the planet's population — and killed an estimated 20 million to 50 million victims, including some 675,000 Americans.

Other estimates run as high as 100 million dead victims — around 3 percent of the world’s population. The exact numbers are impossible to know due to a lack of medical record-keeping in many places. That's the real reason WHO exists — to keep better records. The human immune system, without any written or intelligent plan, will automatically save most of humanity, not the WHO bureaucracy.

You're dumber than a rock. Flu and coronavirus are 2 entirely different things. Why don't you know that by now? It's been in the news more than enough times. And yes, it's possible to stop coronavirus. They stopped MERS, a previous coronavirus.

And if democrats don't do any different, how are they any better?

SARS and MERS weren't exterminated like smallpox. SARS and MERS are still around and there is NOT an organized program to eradicate either like for smallpox. SARS and MERS were self-limiting diseases that sputtered out on their own. It was NOT the brilliance of human medical research that stopped those diseases. It was the dull old human immune system which has been saving us for thousands of years. Plus, stay away from sick camels to avoid MERS. That's pretty easy to do where I live.

The SARS story is much the same. When SARS emerged from China in 2002 it swept across the globe. More than 8,000 people fell ill and 774 died. The disease disappeared in 2004, likely due to isolation and quarantine containment measures. (Same are MERS -- stay away from sick camels. Or people.) It sure wasn't from vaccination.

Here's from YOUR OWN LINK:
When SARS emerged from China in 2002 it swept across the globe—largely through air travel—causing deadly illness. More than 8,000 people fell ill and 774 died ... SARS drew the collective focus of researchers throughout the world. The disease disappeared in 2004, likely due to isolation and quarantine containment measures, and no cases of SARS have been reported since..
www.niaid.nih.gov/diseases-conditions/coronaviruses

Stopping air travel. Quarantine. Containment. Those are all things that were done back then to stop SARS, thanks to medical science figuring out what it was and how it spread.

Those were all the things WHO could have done for SARS-COV-2 now, and should have done, to STOP (not 'eradicate') SARS-COV-2.

If WHO(the morally crippled Tedros) had taken action earlier, we probably wouldn't be facing what we're facing.

That's the problem with morally crippled people, like Tedros, and you. They're incapable of doing what's right if it conflicts with their food bowl.

In any case, I hope your nice strong immune system has a chance to show you what it can do with a nice, strong cytokine storm.

And if democrats don't do any different, how are they any better?

WHO can NOT close borders and stop flights. But Trump can. Why hasn't he? Oh, I know, I know! He is worried about what that would do to the stock market and the economy and his reelection. It is not Tedros who is morally crippled. Do I need to say it? Yes, I do: it is Trump who is morally crippled.

I guess there was no reason for Tedros to have STILL not declared this to be a pandemic. WHO must just be a toothless, ignorable soothsayer.

Really?

Show me how WHO can close USA borders over the objections of Trump. Please show me, 1kiki. While you are at it, show me how WHO could keep borders open when Trump closes borders. It is Trump that decides about USA borders, not WHO. It is all Trump's decision for why the borders are open. And Trump made that decision to help his reelection. Trump is morally bankrupt.

1kiki, I will be back in a few hours to see what kind of phoney answer you give to make Trump look good. Work hard on your fake story about how Trump would shut down the borders and stop all flights and crash the economy in order to stop the coronavirus, even if a shut down and crash would prevent him from being reelected.
