I'm just waiting for that second wave to kick in. Some time in the beginning of June, if you look at "cases", and some time after mid-June if you look at "deaths".

I don't expect it to spread as quickly as it did originally because it will, for the most part, be spreading thru populations that aren't as densely-packed as NYC, but I do expect to see an uptick.

I think 'cases' are too easily manipulated by making tests unavailable, which means 'deaths' are also easily manipulated. But 'admissions' is a figure collected by all hospitals and it would be hard to get them to fudge those numbers. So unless you have a government official 'fat-fingering' the data, like they've done in Georgia on more than 1 occasion (OOPS! you caught us at it AGAIN!), 'admissions' now available on DIVOC might be a metric to look at as well.

But Divoc's "cases" are based on a positive test result, and also hostage to testing.

ABOUT GEORGIA AND FLORIDA

Quote:

If it’s working in Georgia, why can’t it work here?

Georgia’s flattening curve defied all scientific logic. Pandemics don’t end because the economy is suffering and we want them to.

And yet data don’t lie. Or do they?

Thanks to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, we now know things did indeed look too good to be true. Georgia’s coronavirus numbers looked so rosy because officials misrepresented the data in such a way it’s difficult to believe it wasn’t done on purpose.

The state of Georgia made it look like its covid cases were going down ***by putting the dates out of order on its chart*** May 5 was followed by April 25, then back to May again, whatever made it look like a downslope. https://t.co/H8pSvY6rxn
— David Fahrenthold (@Fahrenthold) May 17, 2020

“I have a hard time understanding how this happens without it being deliberate,” microbiology and molecular genetics PhD and state Rep. Jasmine Clark told the Journal Constitution. “Literally nowhere ever in any type of statistics would that be acceptable.”

Georgia isn’t the only state itching to reopen that has a penchant for dubious data. Florida actively tried suppressing county coroners from releasing COVID-19 death tallies.

DIVOC reflect JH, but the JH category in its website isn't clear if hospitalizations are for confirmed cases only, or including probable. JH gets its numbers from somewhere, and I think it's from the states, since CDC data is woefully inadequate when it comes to 'hospitalizations'. (The CDC made COVID a reportable disease maybe 6 weeks ago, but I don't think hospitalizations are.) Since each state has its own state health department, I think it depends on per-state practice.

For example, Illinois counts COVID-like Illness (CLI) as a category for admission. https://dph.illinois.gov/sites/default/files/COVID19/Illinois%20COVID-
19%20Restore%20Metrics_5.5.20_website.pdf
Virginia reports total hospitalizations in 2 categories: as confirmed + probable and confirmed. But it's uncertain what it reports to JH (or JH downloads). https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/coronavirus/ As of 4/13/2020 Massachusetts reports confirmed plus probable in its hospitalizations data. https://www.mass.gov/doc/covid-19-dashboard-may-18-2020/download

This is one of those times I'm grateful there isn't a totally federalized system.

T cells found in COVID-19 patients ‘bode well’ for long-term immunity

Immune warriors known as T cells help us fight some viruses, but their importance for battling SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, has been unclear. Now, two studies reveal infected people harbor T cells that target the virus—and may help them recover. Both studies also found some people never infected with SARS-CoV-2 have these cellular defenses, most likely because they were previously infected with other coronaviruses.

“This is encouraging data,” says virologist Angela Rasmussen of Columbia University. Although the studies don’t clarify whether people who clear a SARS-CoV-2 infection can ward off the virus in the future, both identified strong T cell responses to it, which “bodes well for the development of long-term protective immunity,” Rasmussen says. The findings could also help researchers create better vaccines.

I think the USA will bounce back, could be leaving the worst of it behind
it will be a sad time, thousands upon thousands dead, family, wives, husbands, old people

but in a ways it might have done the world good. Each generation needs to learn from its own hardship.

Brazil seems to be the next place with a massive outbreak, the leader still in denial about the virus.

Swedish could still fix this? Spain and Belgium appear to have double the excess mortality, compared to Sweden

Anders Tegnell, the spokesman for Sweden's outlier coronavirus strategy, dismissed the figures on Tuesday night, arguing that it was misleading to focus on the death toll over a single week.

Some online talked with Swedish friends, the social collective they don't care, the greater socialist good will be done, they say the gov't is always right and must continue the same strategies no matter how many casualties, herd immunity to an totally unknown virus must be obtained. What the actual F.. The "So what" attitude?

Well, speaking of Sweden...

I find it quite amusing that a Socialist Utopia that won't think twice about jailing reporters for reporting on the grooming and rape of their native girls by filthy Muslim pedophiles is the same country that won't allow their government to shutter business doors during this fake crisis.

The one good thing that will come out of this is local governments changing their laws to ensure that this never happens again here.

But only if they follow through with it.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Out of curiosity I calculated the case fatality rate for states with greater than 3,000 cases. In general, as the number of cases trends lower, so does the case fatality rate. The trend is more clear if you sort the states by per capita cases in WorldOMeters (which I'm not going to post. However you can easily import the WorldOMeters data into a spreadsheet or database, and you can do the calculations on your own.):

As of May 20, 2020
Michigan 9.55
Connecticut 9.04
New York 7.90
Louisiana 7.38
Pennsylvania 7.08
New Jersey 7.07
Massachusetts 6.82
Indiana 6.37
Ohio 6.05
Colorado 5.70
Missouri 5.59
Oklahoma 5.4
DC 5.39
Washington 5.23
Nevada 5.21
Maryland 5.02
Arizona 5.01
New Hampshire 4.91
Mississippi 4.76
Kentucky 4.60
Illinois 4.51
New Mexico 4.48
Minnesota 4.45
South Carolina 4.44
Florida 4.42
Georgia 4.26
California 4.09
Alabama 4.06
Rhode Island 4.03
Oregon 3.79
Delaware 3.78
Wisconsin 3.59

Texas 2.76
Iowa 2.52
Kansas 2.38
Arkansas 2.14

Took an initial jump up but have since plateaued. The jump up indicates that they have some risk factors for transmission, the plateau shows that they've reached some kind of equilibrium with the virus:

You're funny. You haven't been right about SARS-COV-2 not even once in all this time, no matter how many times you shift your position on it or bloviate about how right you are.

Peter Piot - this guy who is Belgian discovered Ebola way back when. He's kind of a folk hero. Anyway, after a lifetime of battling Ebola and AIDS, he got coronavirus, and barely survived.

'Finally, a virus got me': Ebola expert on nearly dying of coronavirus
https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2020/may/13/finally-vir
us-got-me-ebola-expert-on-nearly-dying-coronavirus-peter-piot

Piot is still recovering and warns that the more we learn about the virus, the more questions arise. “There will be hundreds of thousands of people worldwide, possibly more, who will need treatments such as renal dialysis for the rest of their lives,” he predicted.
“We are learning while we are sailing. That’s why I get so annoyed by the many commentators on the sidelines who, without much insight, criticise the scientists and policymakers trying hard to get the epidemic under control. That’s very unfair.”

What an Epidemiology Expert Learned From Beating COVID-19
https://www.pbs.org/wnet/amanpour-and-company/video/what-an-epidemiolo
gy-expert-learned-from-beating-covid-19
/
And it shows also that COVID-19 is more than — you know, lots of people get a bit of a flu and then 1 percent die and then often they say, oh, it’s only people over 70 and I’m 71 or people with underlying diseases. No, there’s a lot of people in between and a lot of people who, you know, will suffer from lung infections, from heart problems, kidney problems and so on. So, that has really — gave me new insight.

This scientist battled Ebola and HIV from the lab. He ‘faced death’ from COVID-19
https://www.deseret.com/u-s-world/2020/5/13/21255835/coronavirus-covid
-19-peter-piot-hiv-ebola-infection

According to Piot, there are lingering effects to the coronavirus that will hang with him for the foreseeable future.
Indeed, public health experts have suggested there are aftereffects to the virus. Some of the infected will never be the same again, suffering lung and kidney damage.

For sure, I prefer to get information from genuine experts - people who actually know something - instead of from people like, well, JACK.

Covid-19 may never die out and millions are likely to face health complications, expert says
https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/coronavirus-never-die-out-covid19-h
ealth-complications-a4447821.html

Professor Peter Piot, director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), said Covid-19 could become endemic and a vaccine may not be found. "The problem is that we don't know whether a vaccine is possible," he said. "We have been working since 1984 trying to develop an HIV vaccine and tens of billions of pounds have been invested, and we still don't have one. The (coronavirus) vaccine will have to be absolutely safe because it will have to be given to billions of people. Even if only 0.0001 percent develop some serious adverse complication, that's a lot of people. Even if we find a vaccine, eliminating this virus is quite a challenge. We only have one infection which has been eliminated for humans, and that's smallpox."

"It could become endemic, it could become part of our human condition."

Prof Piot, who was was recently appointed Covid-19 special adviser to the President of the European Commission, said: "I had arterial fibrillation, I'm now on anti-coagulants, which I never dreamed I would have to take. We will see hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, of people with problems with their kidneys, with their hearts. And that has major implications for health services, for people, and for economies."

Youtube, Twitter and Facebook have been censoring people for speaking out against information that the WHO and CDC have said about the virus. This includes medical professionals who aren't going along with the status quo and is not bullshit snake oil homeopathy shills. This also includes information that the WHO and CDC have backpedaled on, making those original censored videos and comments now in-line with what the WHO and the CDC have to say.

Your "information" is uninformed. It has been since the beginning.

As always, I will let TIME do my speaking for me in the end.

And then I will laugh.

I know about the censoring, dood..

Time has ALREADY spoken. There were many cities and regions around the world that were ... and still are... being hit, HARD, by the virus. Like, people keeling over in the streets. Definitely NOT a "just a cold" and only a moron would say that, so if the shoe fits ...

Here's the thing: Lockdowns are not supposed to last forever. Like I posted already, they're supposed to be a circuit-breaker: Slow down a spiralling-out-of-control process until you can figure out your next step. The next step is NOT a vaccine, nor is it a treatment because nobody has found one yet. Even the fabled $1000/dose remdesivir has flamed out. Ok,so since option (1) and option (2) are off the table, and option (lockdown) can't go on forever, what's the next step, genius?

Reopen the economy and cross your fingers? Reopen the economy and go into complete denial, like you have? Reopen the economy and just kiss off a whole bunch of dead people as the cost of "doing business"? Reopen the economy and impose intrusive contact-tracing apps on everyone's phone? Reopen the economy and issue "internal passports" or even microchips that say you've already been infected and are now (presumably) safe to go back to work?

Yanno, there is at least one more option, which you seem to have forgotten.

In the meantime, death rates are extremely inaccurate and overblown since any legit testing has not been implemented, and we still haven't even begun to test for people who have antibodies and were never tested in the first place.

Now and again, I read about the epidemiological mystery that is SoCal - specifically, LACounty. How is it that, despite low overall numbers, and protective measures in place, it continues to be the hot spot for slowly but persistently increasing COIVD-19 cases, that dominates all of California's statistics?

And I have a theory, based on some personal observations. A little background: Wherever I go, I make a point of chatting with people to find out what's the what. Just yesterday for example, I was chatting with the woman who works at the local Chevron, and she told me that back at the beginning of the year she had the most horrible flu ever, unlike any flu she's ever had before, and she thinks it might have been COVID-19. Then I went to the grocery store which had a long line waiting to get in, and ended up chatting with a man and his wife - she was in scrubs (BAD form! NOT cool! Scrubs and all the nasties on them are supposed to stay at work!) so of course I asked her where she worked .... she told me she works in a hospital on the west side of LA. And they both told me they had the worst flu ever at the same time in December. And also - since she's been working with a lot of COVID-19 patients - she believes what they had was COVID-19. And she said she's talked with other people who had the same thing happen, but that, at the time, they wrote it off as the flu as well. Her opinion was that SARS-COV-2 was spreading around, but that people in general were presuming it was really bad case of the flu. I gave those 2 as specific examples, but that kind of conversation is a remarkably common with the people I chat with.

In one of my earliest posts, I noted the huge volume of air traffic between SoCal and China, well over a million travelers per year. Based on that, I expected early SARS-COV-2 spread in SoCal. And that's what I think happened. But SARS-COV-2 wasn't recognized in SoCal until far long after it had already settled in for the long haul.

I think the reasons for that were many-fold. Spread happened very, very early, long before anyone was looking for SARS-COV-2. The couple I was talking with were sick mid-December. The dispersed nature of SoCal prevented explosive spread, which is what happened in NYC, that would have brought it to attention. And there was no signal event, like the cluster of nursing home deaths in Washington, to highlight it either. So it covertly dispersed and became entrenched quite early.

I think it's now endemic, and there needs to be a different strategy for dealing with it, in this dispersed, transitory situation.

I think one of the first steps would be making masks mandatory in LACounty. Presently, they're only recommended in the county, though mandatory in the city proper.

That's why you're cheering on this virus. No mistake, you're on the virus' side, because you want "old people" and "sick people" to die.

Too bad there isn't a virus that only attacks the obsencely wealthy. THAT might come a little closer to solving our actual problems, and not just your childhood resentment/personal grotch.

I see that the USA is predicted to exceed 100K deaths today. That makes it officially worse than "the flu". Another 100K deaths will meet my lower-end guessstimate for #deads ("hundreds of thousands"), which I expect to accumulate some time in the next year.

Meanwhile, the "reopening" seems to be mainly "open up. cross your fingers". Except for Los Angeles there doesn't seem to be any effort at masking up, sanitizing the world environment, staggering work schedules etc.

We don't need to "restart" the economy, we need to REFORM it, and not just to accommodate the virus. But in order to do THAT, we need people to reform their thinking and to stop getting heated up about phantom problems, and learn to pay attention to reality and start creating REAL solutions.

According to divoc-91, while there are a number of nations whose "new case" are rising steadily, there are only a few whose "new deaths" are also rising at the same rate. That's probably because their testing capacity is going up.

The nations whose "new deaths per day" are actually increasing (Number of bodies delivered to the morgue going up every day for at least the past two weeks) are Brazil, Mexico, India, Indonesia, Chile, and Bangladesh. We can suspect their reporting simply because they don't have the infrastructure to track ALL of the deaths that occur in the slums and small villages, so I imagine the actual figures to be quite a bit higher - perhaps five times higher.

By official figures, tho, the two nations with the highest "new deaths per day per million" are Sweden and the UK. The impoverished nations have a long ways to go before they reach the per capita "new deaths per day per million" of those two wealthy nations.

I haven't had time to parse the states. The trends that were established over the past two weeks are still more-or-less in place ... the states that were going down are still going down or at least have plateaued, the states that were going up are STILL going up (MISSISSIPPI! Whatcha doin'? *smack!*) and altho the endpoints have shifted around a bit it is still too early to establish trends. I'll check back in another week or so on that and see how things are going.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

‘It’s something I have never seen’: How the Covid-19 virus hijacks cells

A deep dive into how the new coronavirus infects cells has found that it orchestrates a hostile takeover of their genes unlike any other known viruses do, producing what one leading scientist calls “unique” and “aberrant” changes.

Recent studies show that in seizing control of genes in the human cells it invades, the virus changes how segments of DNA are read, doing so in a way that might explain why the elderly are more likely to die of Covid-19 and why antiviral drugs might not only save sick patients’ lives but also prevent severe disease if taken before infection.

The first group of genes produces interferons. These proteins, which infected cells release, are biological semaphores, signaling to neighboring cells to activate some 500 of their own genes that will slow down the virus’ ability to make millions of copies of itself if it invades them. This lasts seven to 10 days, tenOever said, controlling virus replication and thereby buying time for the second group of genes to act.

This second set of genes produce their own secreted proteins, called chemokines, that emit a biochemical “come here!” alarm. When far-flung antibody-making B cells and virus-killing T cells sense the alarm, they race to its source. If all goes well, the first set of genes holds the virus at bay long enough for the lethal professional killers to arrive and start eradicating viruses.

“Most other viruses interfere with some aspect of both the call to arms and the call for reinforcements,” tenOever said. “If they didn’t, no one would ever get a viral illness”: The one-two punch would pummel any incipient infection into submission.

SARS-CoV-2, however, uniquely blocks one cellular defense but activates the other, he and his colleagues reported in a study published last week in Cell. They studied healthy human lung cells growing in lab dishes, ferrets (which the virus infects easily), and lung cells from Covid-19 patients. In all three, they found that within three days of infection, the virus induces cells’ call-for-reinforcement genes to produce cytokines. But it blocks their call-to-arms genes — the interferons that dampen the virus’ replication.

The result is essentially no brakes on the virus’s replication, but a storm of inflammatory molecules in the lungs, which is what tenOever calls an “unique” and “aberrant” consequence of how SARS-CoV-2 manipulates the genome of its target.

In another new study, scientists in Japan last week identified how SARS-CoV-2 accomplishes that genetic manipulation. Its ORF3b gene produces a protein called a transcription factor that has “strong anti-interferon activity,” Kei Sato of the University of Tokyo and colleagues found — stronger than the original SARS virus or influenza viruses. The protein basically blocks the cell from recognizing that a virus is present, in a way that prevents interferon genes from being expressed.

In fact, the Icahn School team found no interferons in the lung cells of Covid-19 patients. Without interferons, tenOever said, “there is nothing to stop the virus from replicating and festering in the lungs forever.”

That causes lung cells to emit even more “call-for-reinforcement” genes, summoning more and more immune cells. Now the lungs have macrophages and neutrophils and other immune cells “everywhere,” tenOever said, causing such runaway inflammation “that you start having inflammation that induces more inflammation.”

At the same time, unchecked viral replication kills lung cells involved in oxygen exchange. “And suddenly you’re in the hospital in severe respiratory distress,” he said.

In elderly people, as well as those with diabetes, heart disease, and other underlying conditions, the call-to-arms part of the immune system is weaker than in younger, healthier people, even before the coronavirus arrives. That reduces even further the cells’ ability to knock down virus replication with interferons, and imbalances the immune system toward the dangerous inflammatory response.

The discovery that SARS-CoV-2 strongly suppresses infected cells’ production of interferons has raised an intriguing possibility: that taking interferons might prevent severe Covid-19 or even prevent it in the first place, said Vineet Menachery of the University of Texas Medical Branch.

In a study of human cells growing in lab dishes, described in a preprint (not peer-reviewed or published in a journal yet), he and his colleagues also found that SARS-CoV-2 “prevents the vast amount” of interferon genes from turning on. But when cells growing in lab dishes received the interferon IFN-1 before exposure to the coronavirus, “the virus has a difficult time replicating.”

After a few days, the amount of virus in infected but interferon-treated cells was 1,000- to 10,000-fold lower than in infected cells not pre-treated with interferon. (The original SARS virus, in contrast, is insensitive to interferon.)

Ending the pandemic and preventing its return is assumed to require an effective vaccine to prevent infection and antiviral drugs such as remdesivir to treat the very sick, but the genetic studies suggest a third strategy: preventive drugs.

It’s possible that treatment with so-called type-1 interferon “could stop the virus before it could get established,” Menachery said.

Giving drugs to healthy people is always a dicey proposition, since all drugs have side effects — something considered less acceptable than when a drug is used to treat an illness. “Interferon treatment is rife with complications,” Menachery warned. The various interferons, which are prescribed for hepatitis, cancers, and many other diseases, can cause flu-like symptoms.

But the risk-benefit equation might shift, both for individuals and for society, if interferons or antivirals or other medications are shown to reduce the risk of developing serious Covid-19 or even make any infection nearly asymptomatic.

Interferon “would be warning the cells the virus is coming,” Menachery said, so such pretreatment might “allow treated cells to fend off the virus better and limit its spread.” Determining that will of course require clinical trials, which are underway.

“It’s something I have never seen in my 20 years of” studying viruses, said virologist Benjamin tenOever of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, referring to how SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, hijacks cells’ genomes.

The “something” he and his colleagues saw is how SARS-CoV-2 blocks one virus-fighting set of genes but allows another set to launch, a pattern never seen with other viruses. Influenza and the original SARS virus (in the early 2000s), for instance, interfere with both arms of the body’s immune response — what tenOever dubs “call to arms” genes and “call for reinforcement” genes.

I recall reading very early on that the Chinese had tried interferon in the original Wuhan outbreak, but that it didn't help. OTOH my impression is that there are several interferons, and tht Cuba is successfully using interferon-6.

But just to show how deeply deficient my knowledge of the immune system is, the article confused me when it zigged from "chemokine" to "cytokine". A chemokine is one type of cytokine that induces movement (chemotaxis) of WBCs and macrophages to an area of inflammation, correct?

I'm currently on montelukast for asthma, and my impression (when I waded thru all of the biochemical jargon) is that it reduces the action of chemotaxis.

So I wonder what would happen if they tried something like interferon AND montelukast? AND maybe an antiviral?

And I suppose that we're still going to pretend that the idea of engineering viruses to target specific DNA is in the realm of fantasy land, huh?

Remember when you all said I was full of shit about that one? Do ya? Do you remember that?

I do.

You have zero imagination.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

You were talking about 'races', JACK. The genetics of different 'races', JACK. Targeting different 'races', JACK.

So, stop being a lying bitch, ok, JACK?

Meanwhile, there's NO indication the virus was engineered to do this specifically. When you tinker with genetic code, you can come up with all sorts of results - including accidentally disabling one function.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Oklahoma and Arkansas new deaths have taken a SIGNIFICANT tick up over the past seven days. Tennessee will follow if it doesn't reverse its trend in two days. And of course Mississippi is still following its line upwards.

I'm willing to overlook little wobbles in the chart, but it's beginning to look like a trend for Oklahoma and Arkansas. Still, I've learned from chart-watching that it takes more than 7 days to establish a trend. Colorado, which had dropped significantly from its ski-season high, jumped up YUGELY over five days, almost hitting its previous all-time high, but has since dropped back down.
