CBS NEWS: “So you’ve seen pandemics over the decades, how does this one compare with everything?”

DR. DREW: “A bad flu season is 80,000 dead, we’ve got about 18,000 dead from influenza this year, we have a hundred from corona. Which should you be worried about influenza or Corona? A hundred versus 18,000? It’s not a trick question. And look, everything that’s going on with the New York cleaning the subways and everyone using Clorox wipes and get your flu shot, which should be the other message, that’s good. That’s a good thing, so I have no problem with the behaviors. What I have a problem with is the panic and the fact that businesses are getting destroyed that people’s lives are being upended, not by the virus, but by the panic. The panic must stop. And the press, they really somehow need to be held accountable because they are hurting people.”

Preach on, brother.

I think this is the extent of the way he claims people are being hurt: "businesses are getting destroyed that people’s lives are being upended". I haven't seen any businesses in my neighborhood getting destroyed. Have you seen any businesses getting destroyed over by your way, Jack?

I also think this is being overtly politicized. Every time I read something in the 'news' that mentions SARS-COV-2 and Trump in the same place, it makes me grind my teeth ... the same way that idiots focused on Trump's tweets make me grind my teeth.

There's just too much hyperbole on both fronts.

But I think this could roll out to be a credible problem.

Apropos of nothing, what we haven't seen to date is a country that just decided to let it rip. Let it do its worst. That would be an interesting data point.

Sure, it's hyperbole, but it's nice to hear it from the other side when all you hear is the sky is falling from everybody else.

I'm the wrong person to be asking about "businesses failing" though. I don't ever spend any money on anything.

But yanno what? If facemasks are sold out at a hardware store where I live, a place that isn't going to actually feel any effects of this until long after we would know if it was really bad through places like you live, I'd be willing to bet that patronage to places like restaurants are quite a bit down too. McDonalds will weather that storm just fine, but what about the local ma and pa food joints that don't have the same resources? Or small two screen movie theaters like the one down by my brother that I love?

I won't even get into how many gross advertisements focusing on COVID and Trump I heard on the radio from Bloomberg's campaign in the few days I was helping my friend in the south suburbs of Chicago.

I'm a patient man. I look forward to this blowing over and not being anything serious so I can tell everybody that I told you so, again.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

How many have to die before you think it's significant? I've asked you that before.

What if the actions you think are too excessive are the ones that keep it from being the worst-case scenario? Since one can't prove a negative, you'll never be able to make your claim!

You have a really bad case of poorly-defined endpoint!

Yeah, THE PRESS killed those 30 people. God, yer dense.

I think we're about to get a big uptick in deaths due to it. The numbers are calling for it.

Dr Sam Fink is treating two patients stricken with COVID-19 and is friends with a third patient in Tarzana, CA
All three men are in intensive care, including one who is in his forties and has no preexisting conditions.

How many people you think we can fit in intensive care??? Maybe a couple hundred in our area...out of thousands possible??

But you have no intention of taking up intensive care space, so no problem....right?

I dunno. Let's say 100 Million. In the US alone.

I've already answered your question when you asked it before.

If 33% of the population isn't curbed at the very least, and then maintained at that level, things are never going to get better when it comes to climate change and lack of resources.

If COVID doesn't do it, something else will eventually come around and do it. Maybe we run out of cillins that will save us all from Staph?

It becomes a problem when it's clear that the thing finally comes around is so devastating that it dwindles the human population down to numbers that can't even maintain today's technology and the power grid and the infrastructure.

Sorry, but 30 people got divorced in the time it took me to write this reply in the US alone.

I'm not worried about COVID.

Michael Osterholm, the infectious disease expert who has been warning for a decade and a half that the world will face a pandemic, says the US is ill-prepared to combat the coronavirus due to a shortage of equipment and supplies.

Osterholm, of the University of Minnesota, wrote in Foreign Affairs magazine in 2005 that, "Time is running out to prepare for the next pandemic. We must act now with decisiveness and purpose." He reiterated this point in his 2017 book, "Deadliest Enemy: Our War Against Killer Germs."

BERGEN: So, if in a regular year in the US, the case fatality rate of influenza is 0.1%, you're saying that COVID-19 will be higher?

OSTERHOLM: Twenty to 30 times higher. It could easily be that. We just don't know yet and it could go down based on what we learn.

BERGEN: So, if the 0.1% case fatality rate of the flu kills tens of thousands in any given year in the US, what are the implications for the coronavirus?

OSTERHOLM: It's obvious that this is a very serious challenge. I think that it was unfortunate that a number of public health professionals said early on when COVID-19 first emerged that annual influenza was a much more serious problem.

What they hadn't understood was that they were only watching the opening scene of this particular "coronavirus winter," as I call it. We can expect to see a large number of deaths moving forward -- far surpassing any severe influenza season.

The Chinese data suggests that anywhere from 5% to 10% of COVID-19 cases will become severe illnesses. These cases require a tremendous amount of expert health care; that makes this disease even more of a challenge relative to influenza.

BERGEN: Are we equipped with the ICUs and the ventilators to deal with a large-scale group of people coming in with these kinds of symptoms?

OSTERHOLM: Absolutely not. Right now, today, in Minneapolis-St. Paul, every one of the beds that we use for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a high-level machine that supports the heart and lungs and is critical for keeping people alive who have illness like COVID-19, are filled. This is in part because we are just coming off a moderate to severe flu season and that has really stretched our care capacity. On top of that, a number of hospitals throughout the country have only 5 to 10 days' worth of personal protective equipment (PPE) available for health care workers. They don't know when over-stretched PPE manufacturers will be able to deliver more.

The cost to produce a barrel of oil in Texas is very high compared to the cost in Russia and Saudi Arabia (I worked construction engineering for Saudi Aramco, once upon a time). It was inevitable that if Texas wouldn't limit its oil production by joining OPEC+ that OPEC+ would discipline overly optimistic and greedy Texas oilmen by lower prices to less than the cost in Texas but still higher than the cost of production in Russia. Once Texans understand how markets work, Texans will decide to pump less oil, just as OPEC wants them to do.

Preparing for pandemics is much like preparing for office building fires. The building owners don't want to pay for fire sprinklers added retroactively to old buildings, seeing it as a waste of their money but once the fire starts it is too late. The US didn't want to waste money preparing for a pandemic. Now it is too late for the equivalent of sprinklers. Instead, the entire fire department will have to be called. The building fire could have been kept to one floor, but now it might spread to the entire building. Hope not.

This is not an office building, but it is an example from yesterday of how being a cheapskate owner will get 72 people burned to death:

Incorrect, Signym, you are shit head, unable to imagine a pandemic is similar to high rise fire. Coronavirus and Grenfell are similar; the authorities did a poor job before, during and after because they could not imagine a man-made catastrophe.

So far, Trump is in denial over the seriousness of the pandemic, despite skyrocketing infection numbers. "It will go away. Just stay calm. It will go away," Trump told the nation on Tuesday.

Trump's campaign says it's still full steam ahead, announcing a large "Catholics for Trump" event at a Wisconsin convention center on March 19.

In contrast to Trump's indifference to pandemic, Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden both canceled rallies planned to cap off Super Tuesday II.

Trump Has Ordered Coronavirus Meetings To Be Classified

wtf?

The White House has ordered federal health officials to treat top-level coronavirus meetings as classified, an unusual step that has restricted information and hampered the U.S. government’s response to the contagion, according to four Trump administration officials.

The officials said that dozens of classified discussions about such topics as the scope of infections, quarantines and travel restrictions have been held since mid-January in a high-security meeting room at the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), a key player in the fight against the coronavirus. Staffers without security clearances, including government experts, were excluded from the interagency meetings, which included video conference calls, the sources said.

This White House is insane. How many extra people are going to die because they’re hellbent on letting Donald Trump pretend that everything is totally under control instead of doing everything they can to limit the spread and mortality rate of the coronavirus?

Maybe you should be arguing with Jack about this. I'm not the one saying it's no big deal.

In fact, I started the original thread about this LONG before you figured out it might be a problem decided to be a political opportunist about it. You even argued and said this wasn't meaningful, and that any medical problems were a result of being a wrong-thinking republican (which btw I'm not).

The way Trump handles Coronavirus is exactly how he handles everything:

“My net worth fluctuates, and it goes up and down with the markets and with attitudes and with feelings, even my own feelings,” Donald Trump said in a 2007 deposition for a lawsuit he filed against journalist Tim O’Brien for reporting that Trump was not a billionaire. “Let me just understand that a little,” said O’Brien’s lawyer. “Your net worth goes up and down based upon your own feelings?” “Yes,” Trump said, “even my own feelings, as to where the world is, where the world is going, and that can change rapidly from day to day.”

I’m surfacing that exchange now because it’s a useful window into our present moment. The president of the United States has long believed three things: The first is that reality isn’t real, there’s only “narrative.” The second is that he controls that narrative in accordance with his feelings (and Fox News). The third is that only his feelings are real or worth considering. Tempting though it may be to dismiss these as the ravings of a solipsist, it’s to Trump’s credit that he has gotten a surprisingly large number of people to subscribe to these three tenets. Much of the apparatus of the executive branch is now led by people who bow to his whims and go to shocking lengths to make the things he says at least seem true. His attorney general has waved away investigations into the corruption he denies. The National Weather Service formally instructed the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration not to correct the president’s Sharpie modification of Hurricane Dorian’s path, even if it meant giving Americans in danger the wrong information. The director of national intelligence is refusing to brief Congress on electoral interference, reportedly over concerns he might say things Trump would find upsetting.

Now Trump is trying to force-of-will a pandemic into not being a pandemic at all. “It’s going to disappear. One day it’s like a miracle, it will disappear,” Trump said at the White House on Feb. 28.

In ONE DAY, 631 more people.

Spain, France, and Denmark, are also getting smacked.

Also, some brown people caught something.

Signym, you have shit for brains. Trump promised he'd make his income tax returns available. A promise that he repeated many times. When the audits were finished on his taxes, he still didn't make the returns available. He has been sued and lost that case about keeping his returns a secret six times in a row. The Supreme Court will be seven. He handled Coronavirus the same as his tax returns. He lies over and over, whatever lie best serves himself. Trump did the same with his blind trust as he has done with Coronavirus. He promised a blind trust, but what he delivered on paper is nothing like a blind trust. He promised a replacement for Obamacare, but what he delivered to the Senate was nothing. There was no replacement described in a bill that the Senate could vote on. Trump just says whatever serves himself best, never really meaning anything with his words about Obamacare or Coronavirus.

I'm furious about the Legacy Media politicizing this and generating a ton of ad revenue from it.

I didn't realize the effect this fear mongering was having on people today until I had to restrain myself from giving a 66 year old woman that I know a hug because she probably would have recoiled in horror.

She's cracking up. She went to WalMart today and couldn't find anything she was looking for and she says the store was in shambles.

She thinks she's going to die.

This does NOT have to be a catastrophe. Taiwan has millions of visitors from China and only 45 coronavirus cases and one death. Here’s how Taiwan did it:
www.vox.com/future-perfect/2020/3/10/21171722/taiwan-coronavirus-china
-social-distancing-quarantine

Aggressive measures starting in December saved Taiwan. Can we learn from them?

Corona was declared a pandemic today. I don't think that's something to ignore or poo-poo. People with weak immune systems are the most vulnerable. Beyond that, stay clean and don't breathe too much.

Look at Italy - they actually have a world-class medical system in the north (where the pandemic first hit) but because they didn't get control of the virus early thru strong government action (closing schools, banning gatherings, getting out the message of voluntary "social distancing") their hospitals are totally overwhelmed. Ambulance response times used to be eight minutes, it's now an hour. Surgical suites, general wards, hallways are all being turned into intensive care units and pathologists and ENTs and gynecologists are being turned into intensivists, doctors and nurses are burning out over too much work and seeing too many people die when all they can offer is a mask and an oxygen tank. Medical staff are themselves falling ill. And these north Italians are NOT flooding hospitals with the merest sniffle: They stay home for 10, 14 days until they can't stand it anymore.

The entire nation of Italy just now had to be put on lockdown.. If they had bitten the bullet a month ago, the economic pain and death would have been much, much lighter.

*****

According to some, we are where Italy was a month ago. In a month, we could be where Italy is now. Our hospitals could be in complete chaos, with COVID19 victims and heart attack victims and trauma victims all dying, equally unattended, in a crowded hospital corridor, like a scene out of Contagion.

If it gets that bad, Trump will deservedly be blamed. His first response was to blame China and prop up the stock market instead of taking prompt action to blunt the pandemic.

Nobody will blame Trump for COVID19 puncturing the stock bubble. But they WILL blame him if he fails to take effective action. (And, no, that doesn't included meaningless but dramatic publicity stunts.) Whatever the Italian PM Conte should have been doing a month ago, Trump should be doing now. That might mean closing schools and shuttering all shops except food and pharmacies. Maybe even temporarily nationalizing the healthcare system and pharmaceuticals to mobilize resources to where they're needed most.

In the meantime ... and in the absence of government action ... practice social distancing. Don't go to voluntary gatherings, stay away from churches, schools, and doctors' offices, restaurants, bars, gyms etc. Don't touch your face. Wash yur hand often. If you have a mask, wear one. Learn how to take if off and put it on properly.

I was listening to KNX1070 and I was impressed with what state, local, and private entities are doing in the absence of federal leadership. A lot of activities have been cancelled completely, the UC system is going to online classes for at least a month, many schools are expected to be closed for at least a month - and so on.

I have no idea where they're getting their guidance from, but obviously someone has impressed on a few people the importance of doing this NOW, while it's still doable, instead of later, when the epidemic is in full swing and it'll be no help at all.

Anyway, tomorrow I'll finish my usual stocking up - which I always do to reduce trips and gas consumption - and gassing up, and continue to limit my trips.

The reviews on Wall Street to President Donald Trump’s prime-time Oval Office address on the response to the coronavirus were not kind.

From Trump’s misstatements of White House policy to his lack of clarity on the funding he wanted, analysts said the speech ended up being more harm than help in his apparent desire to calm financial markets. The speech included him saying that cargo from Europe would be blocked, which the White House clarified was not accurate and that the ban was limited to passengers.

Here’s a look at what some are saying, as markets kicked off another rough day, with U.S. stocks (S&P 500, -8.18%) falling sharply enough at the opening bell to trigger the week’s second trading halt.

• “President Trump in an extraordinary Oval Office address didn’t offer up major new ideas on stimulus and only said he’d propose a vague payroll tax holiday to Congress without strongly standing up for any firm size/magnitude. This effectively kicks the issue to Congress which is still planning to go on recess next week.” — Ernie Tedeschi, Evercore ISI

• “President Trump’s address to the nation was symptomatic of the lack of policy coordination in the face of a global coronavirus pandemic. Amidst rapidly rising domestic COVID-19 infections, the president blamed Europe for mismanaging the crisis, and imposed a 30-day ban of foreigners travelling from the region.” — Gregory Daco, Oxford Economics

• “In our view, the failure to include announcements of stronger domestic public health responses — from expanded testing to mobilization of emergency medical capabilities — will hinder Administration efforts to build public trust in the US effort. The counter to Trump’s response is already beginning to form, as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) introduced her opening bid for what a stimulus package will look like.” — Clayton Allen, Height Securities

• “Markets are upset because 1) there are few policies to limit the near-term economic damage; 2) President Trump got several policies wrong, raising questions about policy coherence; and 3) characterizing this as a foreign virus suggests an unrealistic assessment of the risks.” — Paul Donovan, UBS

• “We are confident that a macroeconomically significant ($100bln+) fiscal policy package will eventually pass Congress, but likely not before the one-week recess beginning Friday. Markets will likely remain sensitive to headlines regarding negotiations between Congress and the administration.” — Andrew Hollenhorst, Citi

Always sound advice. I also like: "know your limits."

Over the long term the market has been pretty reliable.

Glad to see trading suspended. It's crazy to think business valuations can have real merit during such an effed up time. Whatever, it'll come back - it always does. And if it doesn't, then we got bigger problems.
